Josephine Lech

BURWELL -- Josephine A. Lech, 89, of Burwell died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Rev. Jim Warner will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Burwell Fire Rescue Unit or the Burwell Community Memorial Health Center.

Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lech was born icon March 18, 1910, to John and Sophie (Dubas) Janus at Ord. She was raised on the family farm and attended school in Ord.

She married Charles Lech on Feb. 17, 1936, at Ord. They lived on a farm northwest of Elyria. He died March 11, 1980. She moved to Ord in 1985.

She was a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Altar Society and VFW Auxiliary.

She enjoyed crafts and making rugs.

Survivors include two sons, Harry Lech and Bernard Lech, both of Burwell; one daughter, Mary Ann Stewart of Ord; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ed Janus of Ord.

Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Henry Janus.

'Jimmy' Vasicek

ORD -- James "Jimmy" Vasicek, 85, of Ord died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at his home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ord Christian Church. The Rev. Michael Chase will officiate. Burial will be in Ord City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Ord Memorial Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Ruth Wheeler

BURWELL -- Ruth Mavis Wheeler, 70, of Burwell died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church in Burwell. The Rev. Rolly Salts will officiate. She was cremated. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Anna Bays

Anna B. Bays, 92, of Grand Island died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at Park Place Health Care and Rehab Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate. Mrs. Bays will be cremated following services. Burial will be at a later date in the Highland Park Cemetery at Ravenna.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Mrs. Bays was born icon on July 4, 1907, to Joseph and Millie (Kozel) Majer at Ravenna. She grew up and received her education at Ravenna.

She married Bert P. Bays on April 18, 1934, at Minden. They made their home in Ravenna before moving to Omaha for a short period of time. They later made their home in Grand Island.

Mrs. Bays was a Girl Scout leader for many years and she also volunteered at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include a daughter, Ann Miller of Fullerton; one grandchild; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack Majer of Ravenna; and two sisters, Evelyn Duis of Grand Island and Mildred Ickes of Bella Vista, Ark.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Marvin Ripp

Marvin L. Ripp, 87, of Grand Island died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. The Rev. Jose Chavez will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday with a 7 p.m. parish rosary at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the United Veterans Club of Grand Island, the Nebraska Veterans Home or St. Mary's Cathedral.

Mr. Ripp was born icon Nov. 16, 1911, at Platte Center to Fredinand H. and Josephine L. (Clother) Ripp. He attended elementary school in Sidney and Platte Center. He then attended Boy's Town, graduating in 1928. He enrolled in the printing trade school at Boy's Town, completing his education in 1930.

Mr. Ripp worked as a pressman in the printing industry in Alliance, North Platte, Chicago, Denver, Stockton, Calif. and Grand Island.

He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army from Oct. 21, 1942, to Nov. 7, 1945. He trained in Australia and served in the Philippines in the South Pacific theater of operations.

Mr. Ripp married Sena Katherine Kjar on Sept. 22, 1951. He retired as a pressman from Ruby Printing in 1980. He moved into the Nebraska Veteran's Home in June of 1997.

He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral, the Disabled American Veterans, VFW, Alcoholics Anonymous since 1967 and the Boy's Town Alumni. Mr. Ripp enjoyed watching sporting events.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine of Grand Island; three daughters, Jerrine Brugh of York, Glenna Ritchie of Axtell and Rita Rene Kidder of Plymouth, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; one sister, Frances Gronenthal of Columbus; and one brother, Fred "Bud" Ripp of Penn Valley, Calif.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Inez Schilz and Thelma Ann, Bernadette and Glendora Ripp; and two brothers, Vernon and Mahlon.

Caren Hunt

DENTON -- Caren R. Hunt, 56, of Denton died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, in Lincoln.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Crete with the Rev. Nathan Ristvedt officiating and the eulogy delivered by Chaplain Dennis Rock. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Crete. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Visitation will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete.

Mrs. Hunt had 20 years of service for Bryan LGH West Independence Center as a chemical dependency counselor. She was a member of Independence Center Alumni Association, an avid dancer, past royalty of Po.L.K.of.A., a co-founder of Crete's Alcoholics Anonymous group and a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne of Denton; three daughters, Darcy (Mrs. Roger) Hinrichsen of Dawson, and Jennie and Amy Burianek of Lincoln; a stepdaughter, Kelle Hunt-Anderson of Kearney; a stepson, Douglas Hunt of Lincoln; her mother and stepfather, Ruth and Loren Kalkwarf of Crete; five grandchildren; two sisters, Carol (Mrs. Wayne) West of Grand Island and Jane (Mrs. Jim) Fahrnbruch of Crete.; and eleven stepbrothers and sisters.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charles J. Novak.

Frieda Jacobs

ST. PAUL -- Frieda Jacobs, 91, of St. Paul died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999 at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Laverne Larkowski will officiate. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery at St. Paul. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the St. Paul EMT unit.

Mrs. Jacobs was born icon Dec. 6, 1907 on a family farm near Farwell to Lars and Andrine (Jensen) Jacobsen. She moved with her family to Dannebrog where she received her education.

On April 18, 1928 she married Harry Jacobs at Kearney. The couple lived in St. Paul. Mrs. Jacobs worked at Jacobs Cafe and the St. Paul Cleaners. Later she was a secretary for the Kansas Nebraska Gas Company in St. Paul until her retirement.

Mr. Jacobs died June 14, 1980. Mrs. Jacobs moved to Parkside Plaza in St. Paul and lived there for the rest of her life

Mrs. Jacobs was a member of the Lutheran faith.

Survivors include one son, Jack, of Albuquerque, N.M.; three daughters, Lavonne (Mrs. Richard) Nielson of St. Paul, Donna (Mrs. Donald) Bourne of Grand Island and Mrs. Elaine Bosserman of Livermore, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Harry, Holger, Louie, Frank, Leo and Willie and five sisters, Rose Neve, Bessie Larkowski, Elvera Dethlefs, Tina Kyhn and Nancy Jacobsen.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Ord Christian Church with the Rev. Michael Chase officiating. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Ord Memorial Chapel. Memorials may be given to the family's choice.

Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Vasicek was born icon Sept. 28, 1913, in Valley County to Joseph and Francis (Parkos) Vasicek. He was raised near Ord and attended school at District 67.

He married Lillian Mach on Sept. 1, 1936. Mr. Vasicek spent his younger years in farming. After quitting farming, he and his wife moved to Ord and ran the Diner Cafe for three years. He then worked for Romans Trucking for seven years. He then worked for Sack Lumber Company and worked there for 20 years. After he retired, he enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian of Ord; two sons, Ronald of Ord and Dwaine of Wahoo; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Jerry of Madison and Leo of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Benny, and a sister, Georgia.

Ruth Mavis Wheeler

BURWELL -- Ruth Mavis Wheeler, 70, of Burwell, died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 80 near Kearney.

Mrs. Wheeler was cremated. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Burwell. The Rev. Rolly Salts will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell. There will be no visitation.

Memorials are suggested to the family. Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wheeler was born icon Aug. 20, 1929, to Gerald and Ora (Walkup) Manchester at North Loup. She attend school in Scotia. She later moved with her family to a farm near Elyria and then back to the Ord area. She helped at home with a large family of nine brothers and sisters and also did domestic work in and around the Ord area for several families.

She married Donald Wheeler in Burwell on Aug. 27, 1960. Their family traveled as Mr. Wheeler worked on construction. Mrs. Wheeler had been working at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell as a nurses aide for 15 years.

Mrs. Wheeler was a member of the Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed Nebraska football, gardening, canning and attending her granddaughter's sporting events.

Survivors include her husband, Donald of Burwell; two daughters, Deanna (Mrs. Larry) Dzingle of Burwell and Tami Sue Wheeler of Ord; a son, Donald of Norfolk, Va.; one granddaughter; three brothers, Alvin, Kenneth and Keith, all of Ord; and five sisters, Evelyn Janicek of Grand Island, Betty Pesek of Ord, Bethene (Mrs. Gary) Paider of Ord, Esther Manchester of Burwell and Phyllis (Mrs. Bud) Kallhoff of Arcadia.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Lyle Manchester, and a grandson, Christopher Dzingle.
