Thelma Christianson

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Thelma G. Christianson, 87, formerly of Iowa City, Iowa, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at the Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, from complications of diabetes.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Cedar Hills Evangelical Free Church in Cedar Rapids. The Revs. Robin Tyner and Alvin Jingst will officiate. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Mount Hope Cemetery in Mapleton, Iowa.

A greeting time will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to hospice.

George L. Gay Funeral Home and Crematorium is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Christianson was born icon on May 31, 1912, in Mapleton to George and Cynthia (Revel) Kraft. She graduated from Mapleton schools and later attended Morningside College, Buena Vista College and the University of Madison in Wisconsin.

She married Clarence Christianson on Oct. 13, 1930, in Glenwood, Iowa. The couple divorced in 1965. She taught at Pleasant Valley Country School in Smithland, Iowa, in 1931, worked for Rayovac in Sioux City, Iowa, from 1951 to 1957, for the Iowa County Extension Work/Dairy Herd Improvement Association from 1957 to 1966 and was the University of Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation evaluator/instructor at Oakdale from 1967 to 1977. She also worked for a hospice for 10 years.

She was a member of the Iowa City Eagles Club and Iowa City Women of the Moose.

Survivors include four daughters, Bethine Klinker of Charter Oak, Iowa, Roberta (Mrs. Charles) Nerison of Cedar Raids, Iowa, Paulette (Mrs. Dennis) Nidey of Barrington, Ill., and Karen (Mrs. Kenneth) Brooker of Coralville, Iowa; four sons, Richard Christianson of Grand Island, Larry Christianson of Colorado Springs, Colo., Robert Christianson of Farmington, N.M., and Albert Christianson of Mitchell, S.D.; 28 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Franklin Kraft of Mapleton and Gerald Kraft of Sun City, Ariz.; and two sisters, Harriet Johnson of Sparks, Nev., and Adeline Drenkhahn of Mapleton.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Kevin and Reginald; and three brothers, Warren, Clarence "Dutch" and Glen Kraft.

Alida Budde-Firth

Alida L. Budde-Firth, 87, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at Park Place Health Care and Rehab Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Oakdale Cemetery in Oakdale. The Rev. Michael Awe will officiate.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday with family members present during that time at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the Oakdale Cemetery Association, Lebensraum or Christ Lutheran Church.

Betty Moffett

Betty E. Moffett, 79, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at St. Francis Skilled Care Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Julie Bringelson will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Shelton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday at Kleine Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Mrs. Moffett was born icon on Dec. 17, 1919, at Gibbon to Harry and Elizabeth (Gumprecht) Riley. She was educated in the Gibbon and Shelton areas and graduated from Wood River High School in 1939. She worked in a cafe in Shelton for a while and then worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant.

She married LeRoy "Pete" Moffett on Nov. 2, 1945, at Gibbon. They lived in Shelton. He died on Dec. 9, 1993, and she moved to Grand Island in 1995.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Rebekah Lodge, both of Shelton, and the Platt-Duetsche Society of Grand Island. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, yard work, flower gardens, cooking and baking pies for her family.

Survivors include one daughter, Beth (Mrs. Jim) Obermiller of Grand Island; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Ron Diercks, who died in 1978; and two brothers, Charles and Don.

Leonard Ambrose

ST. PAUL -- Leonard L. Ambrose, 83, of St. Paul died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.

Services are pending at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Mabel Bromwich

BROKEN BOW -- Mabel E. Bromwich, 97, of Broken Bow died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Kent Cemetery near Taylor. The Rev. David Evans will officiate.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Memorials are suggested to the Prairie Pioneer Center in Broken Bow.

Fred Carpenter

BROKEN BOW -- Fred L. Carpenter, 78, of Broken Bow died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Jim Stark will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Carpenter was born icon on March 4, 1921, at Mullen to Fred L. and Beulah Fern (Garrett) Carpenter. He attended rural grade school and Ansley High School. He served in the Army Air Corps from August 1942 to November 1945.

He married Pearl Brundige. He worked as a filling station attendant for many years and also worked at Ace Hardware in Broken Bow for 10 to 12 years.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Broken Bow.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Fred L. Carpenter of Gothenburg; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harlan Carpenter of Rushville and Cleon Carpenter of Broken Bow; and two sisters, Twilla Hyatt and Freda Luther, both of Broken Bow.

He was preceded in death one brother, Floyd.

'Joey'Foster

St. Paul -- Joseph "Joey" S. Foster, 21, of St. Paul died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at his home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Donald Lovell will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Jacobsen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Foster was born icon on Sept. 28, 1978, at St. Paul to Charles Jr. and Carolyn (Cadwell) Foster. He grew up in St. Paul and attended St. Paul public schools, graduating in 1996. He then attended Peru State College for one year. At the time of his death, he was a student at Metro Community College in Omaha.

He was a member of Grace Baptist Church in St. Paul.

Survivors include his parents, of St. Paul; two sisters, Carrie Foster and Kelly (Mrs. Shaun) Cummings, both of Lincoln; and his paternal grandmother, Edna Foster of Lincoln.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather and maternal grandparents.

Leila Hansen

ST. PAUL -- Leila J. Hansen, 74, of St. Paul died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul with the Rev. Michael McDermott officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Hansen was born icon on Aug. 28, 1925, at Palmer to William H. and Clara (Samuelson) Starkey. She was raised in Palmer and St. Paul. She attended St. Paul schools, where she graduated from high school in 1943.

She married Jimmie Hansen on Feb. 6, 1944, at St. Paul. She worked and lived in St. Paul while her husband served during World War II. Her husband died on April 18, 1973. Later, she sold the farm and moved into St. Paul. She worked at the St. Paul school as a janitor for 15 years.

She enjoyed playing bingo, pickle cards, crocheting and making quilts for her grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and was a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary, both in St. Paul.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry and Randy Hansen, both of St. Paul; two daughters, Sally (Mrs. Darryl) Einspahr of St. Paul and Lana (Mrs. Kevin) Lukasiewicz of Farwell; eight grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and five sisters, Bernice Grammer of Craig, Colo., Dorothy Ambroz of Grand Island and Betty Smith, Lucille Graus and Eileen Rowe, all of St. Paul.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Jimmie; one granddaughter; one stepgrandson; and a brother, Laverne Starkey.

Janet Seberg

FULLERTON -- Janet Seberg, 85, of Fullerton died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.

Services are pending.

Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton is in charge of arrangements.

Frances Waldo

BROKEN BOW -- Frances E. Waldo, 95, of Broken Bow died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Cliff Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Oak Grove Cemetery at DeWitt. The Rev. Paul Quackenbush will officiate.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to Heritage Square in Broken Bow.

Mrs. Waldo was born icon on Nov. 7, 1903, in DeWitt to Dr. William S. and Anna Wiggins. She attended school in DeWitt until she was 9 years old, when the family moved to Exeter. After graduating from Exeter High School, she taught in a country school for two years. She received a two-year teaching certificate from Wesleyan University in Lincoln. She then returned to Exeter and taught seventh and eighth grades.

She married Lowell C. Waldo of DeWitt on June 9, 1928. They lived in York and later moved to Laurel, where he taught vocational agriculture. Later that year, they moved to Gordon.

She lived in Gordon for 50 years and was active in many community organizations. After her husband died in February 1979, she moved to Broken Bow in 1982 to be near her daughter. She was a resident of Liberty Square Complex for 17 years and lived in Heritage Hall Rest Home for one month.

She joined the United Methodist Church when she was 12, was an active member all her life and taught Bible study. She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood for 57 years and the Order of the Eastern Star for 75 years. She was an accomplished seamstress. She was interested in drama and gave readings when she was young. She was an avid reader and a Cornhusker football fan.

Survivors include her daughter, Sherrill (Mrs. Lance) Jones of Broken Bow; a son, Lowell Waldo of Lincoln; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother.
