Joseph Avery

Joseph M. Avery, 71, of Grand Island died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home with the Rev. George Wheat officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with the family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m.

Mr. Avery was born icon on June 16, 1928, at Grand Island to Charles and Viva (Henderson) Murphy. George and Gertrude Avery adopted him when he was 2. He grew up in Palmer.

He entered the U.S. Air Force on Feb. 1, 1946, and was discharged on Dec. 7, 1948.

He married Irene E. Peterson on June 18, 1949, at Oshkosh. They lived in Grand Island, where he worked for Diamond Engineering. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June.

He began working for Union Pacific Railroad in 1950. He worked for Kelly Well Co. from 1954 to 1957. From 1957 until 1962, they lived in Colorado, where he did mining, tunnel and dam construction. In 1962, they moved back to Grand Island, where he worked again for Kelly Well Co. He worked for Leisure Time Pool from 1980 until he retired in 1990. From 1990 until his death, he was self-employed with Joe's Pool and Spa with help from Ray Badsteen.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, American Legion, Eagles Club and Platt Duetsche. He enjoyed camping, gardening and his dog, Korky.

Survivors include his wife, Irene of Grand Island; one son, Joseph "Allen" Avery of Lincoln; four daughters, Karna (Mrs. Leonard) Welch of North Platte, Laura (Mrs. Michael) Nelson, Vera (Mrs. Kenneth) Henman and Paula (Mrs. Dennis) Ewoldt, all of Grand Island; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Strong; and one sister, Edna Knauer of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Winnie Davis

Winnie L. Davis, 94, of Grand Island died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with the Rev. Michael McCain officiating.

Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to Edith Abbott Memorial Library.

Mrs. Davis was born icon on Aug. 23, 1905, at Green County, Iowa, to AlMarion and Rosie (Hammeck) Waldo. She grew up and attended school in Green County, Iowa, and graduated from high school there. After graduation, she attended Abilene Christian College in Abilene, Texas.

She married George A. Patterson in 1929 at Jefferson, Iowa. They lived in Jefferson. In 1942, she moved to Grand Island, where she worked at Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant and for the Union Pacific Railroad.

She married Warren W. Davis on Sept. 17, 1947, at Central City. They lived in Grand Island and later moved to North Platte. They moved back to Grand Island in the 1960s.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and Grand Generation Center. She learned to speak Spanish at Central Community College and had volunteered 1,000 hours assisting people who didn't speak English.

Survivors include two daughters, Sarah Ewing of Grand Island and Myrta Garrison of Steilacoom, Wash.; one son, henry Patterson of Chesapeake, Va.; 27 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Alice Gosda of Oregon and Dot Blackburn of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and one stepson, Alfred Davis of Oregon.

She was preceded in death by a son, two brothers, one great-grandchild, her two husbands and a stepdaughter.

Bernadine Hansen

ST. EDWARD -- Bernadine R. Hansen, 62, of St. Edward died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at BryanLGH East in Lincoln.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward with the Rev. Vernon Knight officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Norfolk.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hansen was born icon on Oct. 18, 1936, in Little Falls, Minn., to Cyril C. and Bertha B. (Kowalczyk) Maule. She was baptized on Oct. 29, 1936, at Holy Trinity Church in Royalton, Minn. She attended elementary school at St. Michael's School in St. Paul, Minn., and graduated in 1955 from our Lady of Peace High School in St. Paul, Minn.

She married Earl R. Hansen on Aug. 15, 1967, at Yankton, S.D. They lived in Madison, Platte and Boone Counties. She worked at various places in Norfolk. She worked at the cheese plant in Newman Grove and later worked at Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home in Newman Grove. She joined the Lutheran faith in Tilden. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in St. Edward. She died following a massive stroke.

Survivors include her husband, Earl of St. Edward; one daughter, Roberta A. (Mrs. Joe) Mason of Lincoln; one stepson, Richard Hansen of Omaha; two stepgrandsons; one step great-granddaughter; two brothers, James C. Maule of St. Paul, Minn., and Jerome Maule of West St. Paul, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Elaine Hansen

TEKAMAH -- Elaine M. Hansen, 71, of Tekamah, formerly of Grand Island, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at the Blair Hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Harms officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Hansen was born icon on Jan. 29, 1928, in Merrick County to Werner and Minnie (Kurz) Ueckert. She grew up and worked on the farm in Merrick County and attended school in Merrick County near Worms.

She married Donal Hansen on April 13, 1958, in Grand Island. They lived near St. Libory and Palmer. They moved to Grand Island in 1964.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Ladies Aide. She attended the senior center in Fremont. She enjoyed puzzles, sewing and reading.

Survivors include her husband, Donal Hansen of Tekamah; one daughter, Doris Hansen of Chapman; one granddaughter; and one brother, Harry Ueckert of Chapman.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Ruby Holcomb

BROKEN BOW -- Ruby Holcomb, 78, of Broken Bow died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at BryanLGH East in Lincoln.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the Revs. Charles Gregory and Henry Duerksen officiating. Burial will be in Broken Bow Cemetery.

Visitation is from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church or Jennie Melham Hospital.

Mrs. Holcomb was born icon on April 26, 1921, at Ansley to John L. and Emma (Schmid) Tennant. She attended grade school in Ansley. When she was in junior high, she and her family moved to Broken Bow. She attended school there and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1938.

She worked for TT Varney Investments for a short time before going to work for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. She married Carl "Bud" Holcomb Jr. in 1942 in Las Vegas, Nev. They lived in California, where she continued to work for the phone company. In 1944, they moved back to Nebraska. She continued to work for the phone company until retiring in 1972 after 25 years of employment. She and her husband celebrated their 57th anniversary in April.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Broken Bow, the Rebekah Lodge and Cosmopolitan Club. She enjoyed the 15 winters she and her husband spent in Mesa, Ariz. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends in Broken Bow and Arizona. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She suffered a stroke on Aug. 20. She was in Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney for three weeks, then transferred to Madonna Rehabilitation in Lincoln.

Survivors include her husband of Broken Bow; one son, Steve; one daughter, Vicki (Mrs. Mark) Knoell of Chandler, Ariz.; five grandchildren; eight grandchildren; one brother, Wayne Tennant of Loveland, Colo.; and one sister, Peggy Miller of Loveland, Colo.

She was preceded in death by one grandson, Tim Knoell.

Verna Hulme

CENTRAL CITY -- Verna M. Hulme, 80, of Central City died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at Community Care in Central City.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Kenesaw Cemetery with the Rev. Eric Parker officiating. Burial will be in the Kenesaw Cemetery.

Visitation is until 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw.

Mrs. Hulme was born icon on Feb. 22, 1919, at Prosser to Joseph and Maggie (Oliver) Daily. She attended school in Prosser. She married Frank E. Hulme on Nov. 18, 1940, in Kearney. She lived most of her life in the Hastings area. They moved to Central City in 1992. Mr. Hulme died on Aug. 25, 1993. She was a Methodist.

Survivors include two daughters, Francis Moore of Central City and Margaret Smets of Leigh; one brother, Gordon Daily of Grand Island; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers, two sisters and one great-grandson.

'Jack' Reigle

ALBION -- John E. "Jack" Reigle, 61, of Albion died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Albion with the Rev. Frank Baumert officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation is from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Monday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion. Visitation will resume at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the church with a 6:30 p.m. rosary. Visitation will continue from 8:30 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church.

Phyllis Buoy

LONG PINE -- Phyllis Buoy, 101, of Long Pine died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at Valley County Hospital in Ord.

Services are pending with Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.

Doris Berney

BRIGHTON, Colo. -- Doris Berney, 80, of Brighton, Colo., formerly of Wolbach, died Oct. 5, 1999, at a Denver hospital.

She was cremated.

Mrs. Berney was born icon on Aug. 10, 1919, on a farm near Palmer to Hubert and Hattie (Stark) McCray. She grew up in Nance County. She attended the Cottonwood rural school and Wolbach High School.

She married Alfred Berney on Nov. 1, 1939, at Wolbach. The couple lived there until moving to Denver.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Shirley Jensen of Brighton; one son, Dennis of Brighton; three grandchildren; two sisters, Leila (Mrs. Cliff) Czya of Alliance and Louise (Mrs. Leonard) Wondercheck of Fullerton; and two brothers, Kenneth McCray of St. Paul and Robert McCray of Wolbach.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Everett McCray.

Dorothy Ross

SANDY, Utah -- Dorothy Ross, 79, of Sandy, Utah, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, in Sandy.

Services will be held at a later date.

Kleine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her sister, Evelyn Ewers of Grand Island.

Milton Nowka

HASTINGS -- Milton Nowka, 72, of Hastings, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Hastings. The Rev. Judith Allen will officiate. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery at Hastings.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Butler-Volland Funeral home in Hastings. Further visitation will be one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Nowka was born icon April 13, 1927, in rural Hall County to Martin and Wilma (Brown) Nowka. He graduated from Trumbull High School in 1945 and entered the United States Army, serving until 1946.

He returned to the family homestead and farmed until his retirement in the fall of 1999.

He married Charlene Perry on Sept. 21, 1949. She died on Nov. 27, 1990.

He married Bonnie Archer Donner on Feb. 1, 1992.

He was a member of the First Christian Church and served as chairman of the board, chairman of the elders and in several other positions. He was an active member of the State and Adams County Farm Bureaus and served on the board of the Trumbull Co-op.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lynette (Mrs. Will) Riggs of Amarillo, Texas and Shereen (Mrs. Gary) Shafer of Hastings; one son, Trent Nowka of Lincoln; one stepson, Joshua Donner of Hastings; his mother, Wilma Nowka of Hastings; a sister, Mildred Niederhaus of Hastings; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife.
