Betty Kwiatkowski

KEARNEY -- Betty J. Kwiatkowski, 70, of Kearney died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at the Mother Hull Home in Kearney.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney with the Rev. Jim Golka officiating. Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney and prior to the services Wednesday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Hospital Hospice or the church.

Mrs. Kwiatkowski was born icon on Oct. 1, 1929, in North Loup to Archie and Ruby (Chipps) Boyce. She grew up in the Ord area and graduated from Ord High School.

She married Del Kwiatkowski on Nov. 28, 1947, in Ord. They lived in several communities before moving to Kearney in 1954. She worked as a waitress at the Snack Bar in downtown Kearney, then worked at Baldwin Filters for 23 years before retiring.

She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters and the Eagles Auxiliary. She also was active in the Buffalo County Extension Club.

Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Knoles of Hayden Lake, Idaho, Chris Smith of Grand Island and Charlene Kwiatkowski and Sheila Silvers, both of Kearney; three sons, Darrel Kwiatkowski of Petaluma, Calif., Dave Kwiatkowski and Dan Kwiatkowski, both of Kearney; 23 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Sharon Foth and Genny Kusek, both of Ord.

She was preceded in death by her husband and two grandsons.

Jane Smith

SHELTON -- Jane Ann Smith, 50, of Shelton died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at St. Francis Memorial Health Center in Grand Island after a battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Shelton United Methodist Church. The Revs. Charles Spence and Denton Jantzi will officiate. Burial will be in the Shelton Cemetery.

Apfel Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Smith was born icon on June 16, 1949, at Kearney to Virgil and Delores (Oliver) Pickering. She grew up in Shelton and graduated from Shelton High School and the Grand Island School of Business.

She married Gary Smith on Sept. 7, 1968, at Grand Island. She worked for W.C. Ferguson, certified public accountant, in Grand Island and Professional Billing Service in Shelton until her illness.

She was a member of the Shelton United Methodist Church. She enjoyed crocheting, cats, needlepoint and gardening.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Heather of Kearney; and two brothers, Jim Pickering of Grand Island and Jack Pickering of Aurora.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Florence Demuth

COLUMBUS -- Florence L. Demuth, 90, of Columbus died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, in Columbus.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church in Columbus. The Rev. Tom Weisbecker will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. vigil service, Tuesday at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. Further visitation will be from 8 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Mrs. Demuth was born icon on May 10, 1909, in New York City. She was orphaned when she was 10 days old. She was placed in St. Vincent's Orphanage in New York City. She came to Nebraska on the Orphan Train in 1913 and was raised by Cornelius and Anna Vande Vegt, a Cedar Rapids farm couple. She graduated from the eighth grade at a rural Cedar Rapids school.

She married Joseph N. Demuth on June 15, 1936. They farmed and started a cream station owned by Harding Cream of Omaha. She later worked at Armour Poultry Plant in Central City. They moved to Columbus in 1965, and she worked at Dale Electronics for a number of years. She then worked in housekeeping at the X-L Motel and later at the Holiday Inn/New World Inn, where she retired in 1997 at the age of 88.

She was a member of St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church. She enjoyed shopping, visiting with family and friends and telling stories.

Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Robinson of Columbus; three sons, Richard of Rocky Mount, Va., John of Columbus and Gerald of Fredericksburg, Va.; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

Her husband died in 1982. She also was preceded in death by a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter and a foster brother, William Bennett.

Jeffrey Rice

OMAHA -- Jeffrey Lynn Rice, 47, of Omaha died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Boyd E. Braman Mortuary in Omaha. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Hospice House of Omaha.

He graduated from Columbus High School and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Mr. Rice worked for Oriental Trading Co.

Survivors include two daughters, Autumn Rice and Taylor Rice; a grandson; his mother, Dorothy Rice of Grand Island; two sisters, Jeanne (Mrs. Bela) Bacsi of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Julie (Mrs. Jay) Kaltenecker of Columbus, Ohio; and a special friend, Debi Hearn.

He was preceded in death by his father, H. Warren Rice.

Margaret Ott

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Margaret Ott, 86, of Springfield, Mo., formerly of Loretto, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, in Springfield.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Greenlawn North Funeral Home in Springfield.

Memorials are suggested to the Boys and Girls Club of Springfield.

Mrs. Ott was born icon on Nov. 5, 1913, in Loretto.

She married Wallace Ott in 1938. Mr. Ott died in 1992.

Mrs. Ott was active for many years with Eastern Star, B.P.O. Does and Loyal Order of Moose. She and her husband enjoyed camping, traveling and many activities with their fraternal organizations.

Survivors include three daughters, Alice Pollock of Jefferson City, Mo., Karen (Mrs. Larry) Abel of Escondido, Calif., and Pattie Clark of Visalia, Calif.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Charlene Ludwick; and a special friend, Mark Davis.

She was preceded in death by one son, Rodney.

Richard Haggart

Richard J. Haggart, 75, of Grand Island, formerly of St. Paul, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Wedgewood Care Center.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Kenneth Christensen will officiate. Inurnment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul. Military honors at graveside will be by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul.

There will be no visitation. Mr. Haggart was cremated.

Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian; one son, Douglas of Lincoln; one daughter, Veronica (Mrs. Charles) Haggart-Work of McLean, Va.; one grandchild; and one sister, Janet Trojan of North Webster, Ind.

'Junior' Sadd

HASTINGS -- Albert M. "Junior" Sadd Jr., 66, of Hastings died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Hastings. The Rev. Sam Rathod will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery at Hastings.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings. Further visitation will be one hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the family or multiple sclerosis.

Mr. Sadd was born icon on May 30, 1933, in Denman to Albert M. Sr. and Helen K. (Abraham) Sadd. He graduated from Trumbull High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He married Delores R. Connett on July 31, 1959. He worked for Hastings Industries as a press setup operator and was a group leader. He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Kearney and the American Legion in Glenvil. He had lived in Hastings for 40 years, moving from Glenvil.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Brenda (Mrs. Rod) Breckner of Hastings; two sons, Kevin and Bryan, both of Hastings; eight grandchildren; two sisters, LaVon Mohr of Houston and Jeanette Hendrickson of Harvard; and five brothers, Ronnie of Hastings, Larry of Doniphan, Jerry of Harvard, Danny of Glenvil and Steve of Geneva.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter.

Roy Stack

CHAPMAN -- Roy E. Stack, 47, of Chapman died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at his home.

Services are pending at Kleine Funeral Home.

Mable Butterfield

GOTHENBURG -- Mable Gaughenbaugh Butterfield, 86, of Gothenburg, formerly of Inman, died Sept. 30, 1999, at Hilltop Estates Nursing Home in Gothenburg.

Services were on Monday at the United Methodist Church in Inman. The Rev. Philip Morrison-Sloat officiated. Burial was in the O'Neill Cemetery.

Biglin's Mortuary of O'Neill was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Butterfield was born icon on Jan. 23, 1913, at Tripp County, S.D., to Robert and Minnie (Hockenbury) Robotham. She graduated from Atkinson High School and taught in the rural schools in the Atkinson area.

She married Justin Butterfield on Jan. 30, 1937, at the O'Neill Presbyterian Church. She worked at Wood's Cafe in O'Neill.

Mrs. Butterfield was a member of the Inman Methodist Church and the Ladies Aide. She moved to Gothenburg in June 1997.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Thomson of Inman and Karen Wiseman of Alda; four sons, Charles of McPherson, Kan., Larry of Beloit, Kan., Jack of Salina, Kan., and Danny of Gothenburg; 22 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Irvin Gaughenbaugh of Fremont.

She was preceded in death by her husband, three sons, one daughter, one sister and one brother.
