Freda M. Railey
Freda M. Railey, 87, of Dalton, Neb., died Monday evening, Jan. 10, 2000 at the Memorial Health Center in Sidney.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14 at the Weyerts Immanuel Lutheran Church, north of Lodgepole, with Pastor Donna Durrette officiating. Burial will be in the Weyerts Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home in Sidney.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church or to Sullivan Hills in care of Lutheran Outdoor Ministries, 27416 Ranch Road, Ashland, NE 68003.
Freda Marie Railey, the daughter of Ubbe Jacob and Hermina M. (Hinrichs) Bruns was born on Dec. 8, 1912 northwest of Lodgepole, Neb. Following her rural school education, Freda began working for Bell Telephone Co. in Sidney. She then moved with the telephone company to the Grand Island area and also did some telephone work at the McCook Air Base.
On Jan. 2, 1946, Freda was united in marriage to George Railey at the Weyerts Immanuel Lutheran Church. They made their home for a short time in Alliance, Neb., while George worked for the Burlington Railroad and Freda continued working for Bell Telephone Co. In 1947 Freda and George moved to their current farm location east of Dalton where they spent more than 50 years together.
Freda was an active member of her church, teaching Sunday School and working with the Lutheran Women. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary in Gurley.
Survivors include her husband George of Dalton; 3 nieces, Jeanette Flessner and her husband Myron of Potter, Caol Brauer and her husband Mike of Sidney, and Betty Heggemeyer and her husband Steve of Kearney; an aunt, Helen Bailey of Fort Shaw, Montana, and numerous other relatives and friends.
Freda was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Floyd Bruns and his wife Effie.
Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney is in charge of the arrangements.
Lois R. Rice
Lois R. Rice, 75, of Des Moines, Iowa, died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2000 at USA Health Care in Des Moines. As of publication date funeral services had not been set. Burial will be at Sidney, Neb.
Lois Ruth Rice was born at Gurley, Neb. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sidney, and a foster grandparent in the Sidney school system. Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Lois is survived by two daughters, Carol Echtenkamp, Urbandale, Iowa, and Marilyn Hahn, Lincoln, Neb.: three sons, William C. Rice Jr., Lafayette, Iowa; James A. Rice, Pueblo West, Colo., and John H. Rice, Onalaska, Wisc.: two sisters, Marilyn A. Stiles, Casper, Wyo., and Marcia Haessler, Ogallala, Neb.; and 6 grandchildren.

Louise Cunningham
Louise Cunningham, 84, of Omaha, and a former Gurley resident, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at the Mercy Care Center in Omaha.
Memorial services will be Saturday at Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney with the Rev. Gary Aten of First United Methodist Church officiating. Inurnment is in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney. Memorials are to the Rockbrook United Methodist Church in Omaha.
She was born on a farm near North Bend on Jan. 29, 1914. She joined her sister and a neighboring cousin and became a Latin teacher. After graduating from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, she was hired to teach in Gurley. There, she met and married Berton Cunningham, a wheat farmer. She quit teaching and became a full-time homemaker and mother.
After her husband’s death in 1959, she returned to teaching. She moved to Omaha in the early 1960s and taught Latin at Burke High School before retiring about 20 years ago. She also served as chairman of the school’s foreign language department.
For nine years, she spent summers as a librarian at the YMCA family camp near Estes Park, Colo.
Survivors include son Donald Cunningham of Omaha; daughter Janice Kennedy of Houston; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Charles Sheets
Charles Sheets, 69, of Potter, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 1, 1998, at the Memorial Health Center in Sidney.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney with the Rev. Carol Fine of the Potter United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Potter Cemetery.
Memorials are to the Memorial Health Center Hospice or the Potter Rescue Unit.
Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney.
He was born Feb. 1, 1929, in Cheyenne County as the only child of Floyd and Bessie (Stanton) Sheets. He attended the Potter schools and graduated from Potter High School. He worked on the fishing boats in Sitka, Alaska, on the railroad as a signalman at Bosler and Walcott, Wyo., as an electrician in Pine Bluffs and Cheyenne, Wyo., and lastly as a roughneck in the oil fields.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, model airplanes and trains, collecting Indian artifacts, working on cars and spending time with his family.
He was married to Eleanor Whitney in 1976 and she preceded him in death earlier this year.
Survivors include daughters Debra Russo of Raymore, Mo., Donna Clark of Potter, Dale Metheny of Potter and Diana Mattert of Cheyenne; step-daughter Lenore VanDeburg of Idaho Falls, Idaho; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Eleanor.
Gladys L. Rea
Gladys L. Rea, 92, a former area resident, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at Northfield Villa in Gering.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Gehrig and Son Funeral Home in Sidney with the Rev. Jack Sample of the United Methodist Church in Kimball officiating. Burial will follow in the Potter Cemetery. Memorials are to the family’s choice. Visitation is at the funeral home from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
She was born July 9, 1906, six miles south of Sunol to James and Sarah (Schad) Vacik. A few years later, she, her sister Naomi, and her parents moved to a homestead north of Crook, Colo. She and Naomi attended school and graduated from Crook High School. When she was 21, she moved to Chicago and became a beautician. While in Chicago, she met and married Millard Rea. In the mid 1930s Millard and Gladys moved to Denver. They lived in Denver most of their lives, until moving to western Nebraska in the late 1970s. The last two years, she and her sister lived in a retirement village in Gering.
Survivors include her sister, Naomi Killham of Gering; nephew Edward Killham of Kimball; great-nephew Miles Killham and great-nieces Joni Troska and Jodi Livingstone.
Preceding her in death were her husband Millard, her parents, nice Elaine Petroff and great-nephew Randall McGee.
Harriott Ulmschneider
Harriott Eleanor Ulmschneider, 97, of Sidney, and a longtime Lodgepole resident, died early Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998, at Memorial Health Center Extended Care.
Memorial Services were Monday at Memorial Health Center Extended Care. Inurnment will be 11 a.m. Friday in the Wyucka Cemetery in Nebraska City. Memorials are to the donor’s choice.
She was born Nov. 1, 1901, in a farmhouse south of Nebraska City to Burton William and Harriott Eleanor (Straw) Hartley. She attended schools in Nebraska City, graduating from Julian High School in 1920. She received an AB degree from Peru State Teachers College in 1927, where she was a member of Beta Beta Beta, a national honorary biology organization. She taught school for 23 years in various locales, including Auburn and Falls City, Laurel, Mont., and Lodgepole.
In 1929, she married Carl C. Ulmschneider in Billings, Mont. Their son, Carl (Buster) was born in 1938. The family moved from Shepard, Mont., to Lodgepole in 1942, where they farmed north of town. Her husband, Carl, died in 1974.
She is survived by her son, Carl, (Buster) and his wife Judy of Seattle.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and 11 brothers and sisters, including Frank and Cecil Hartley of Nebraska City.
Ellen Hockerson
Ellen Hockerson, 97, of Sonoma, Calif., and formerly of Sidney, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at the Sonoma Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral services were Jan. 19 at the Catholic Church in Brentwood, Calif., and burial was in the Brentwood Cemetery.
She was born Dec. 25, 1901, in Kansas to Matt and Teresa Hemmer. She married George Hockerson on Jan. 19, 1924. They moved from Sidney to California in 1943, where she managed a dry cleaning business and did custom sewing for many years. She enjoyed gardening and her flowers. She was especially proud of her fruit trees.
Survivors include her daughters, Betty Musil of Rockport, Texas, and formerly of Potter, and Teresa Ratto of Novato, Calif.; sisters Dora Frahm of Sidney and Tillie Billeter of Broadwater; sister-in-law Tressa Hemmer of Kimball; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1971, two sons, John and Donald, and son-in-law Louie Ratto, three sisters, three brothers, one grandson and one great-grandson.
Elphe L. Eggers, 79
(April 26) Elphe Lois Baugher Eggers, 79, Alliance, died Friday, April 23.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, at the Alliance Berean Church. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at the Crawford Cemetery.
Eggers was born November 17, 1919, to Justin and Ethel Baugher in Holdredge.
She married George Henry Carsten Eggers in 1943. The couple lived in Lexington/overton, Rushville and Crawford. Eggers has lived in Alliance for 25 years.
Eggers was a teacher in rural schools in Dawes, Sheridan and Box Butte Counties for over 25 years. After retiring, she worked at the Alliance Public Library.
She is survived by daughters, Sandra (Jack) Abbott, Alliance; Marlene (George) Mohler, Crawford; sons, Randy (Helen), Idaho Falls, Idaho; Gordon (Betty), Davenport, Nebraska; Russell (Carolyn), Northglenn, Colo.; Jeff, Sterling, Colo.; twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Eggers was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brother, Vernon.
Memorials may be given to the Alliance Public Library of the Alliance Berean Church.
