Darrell Enck

Darrell R. Enck, 71, of Grand Island died Friday, July 21, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the All Faiths Funeral Home. The Revs. Richard Karohl and Robert Enck will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at the All Faiths Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to Edith Abbott Library, Shrine Hospital or St. Francis Cancer Treatment Center.

Mr. Enck was born icon June 5, 1929, to Roy D. and Myrtle I. (Heins) Enck in Grand Island. He attended Platte Elementary, Walnut Jr. High and Grand Island Senior High, where he graduated in 1947.

He married Dorothy L. Haile on June 17, 1948, in Grand Island. In 1948, he began his work career as a route man at Handler News Agency. He eventually became owner and president of the company. In June 1983, he sold his business. During his retirement, he installed signs for Century 21, Daly and ERA.

He enjoyed sharing his Johnson Lake home with his family. His other interests included gardening, traveling with friends, his coffee groups, horse race handicapping and reading. He also coached in the Elks seventh grade basketball program for a number of years.

He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, the Ashlar 33 Masonic Lodge, Tehema Shrine Temple, Liederkranz, Elks, Eagles and UCT. He was a Fonner Park bond holder.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, Thomas, Tim, Terry and Todd, all of Grand Island, and Tedd of Lincoln; one daughter, Tracy (Mrs. Scott) Moser of Kearney; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, the Rev. Robert of Pueblo, Colo., and William of Long Island, N.Y., and one sister, Sondra Fletcher of Grand Island.

Ruth Hetrick

Ruth Hetrick, 77, of 232 Ruby Ave. died Friday, July 21, 2000, at the Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Karen Kennerly will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Hetrick was born icon on Oct. 30, 1922, at Lake Manawa, Iowa to Earnest and Stella (Steuben) Kiesel. She grew up in Central City and attended rural Chapman schools.

She married Merwin P. Hetrick on Oct. 19, 1941, in Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island where she was employed by St. Francis Hospital from 1952 to 1969. From 1969 until the time of her death she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Eagles No. 378 Auxiliary. She enjoyed crafts, camping and collecting collectibles and dolls.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Ernie and Mike, both of Grand Island; one daughter, Sharon (Mrs. Alvin) Rinke of Grand Island; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two stepbrothers, Lindell Orendorff of Huntsville, Texas and Dale Orendorff of Montrose, Colo.; and one stepsister, Ardith Richmond of Colorado Springs, Colo.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Battles; two stepbrothers, Elwin and Kenneth Orendorff; and one granddaughter.

Tara Mauler

SARGENT -- Tara M. Mauler, 21, of Sargent died Thursday, July 20, 2000, in an auto accident near Amherst.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Sargent. The Rev. Mark Crist will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Sargent.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Rhoad Funeral Home in Sargent.

Memorials are suggested to the church or the Sargent EMT Unit.

Miss Mauler was born icon Jan. 30, 1979, in Sargent to Randall D. and Penny J. Mauler. She attended Sargent Public Schools and graduated in 1997.

She attended SCC in Lincoln and Beatrice, where she completed her degree in agribusiness and graduated in May 2000.

She took a landscape design internship in Kearney, where she moved in March 2000.

She was active in basketball, volleyball, track, softball, National Honor Society and United Methodist Youth Fellowship. She was talented in art and music. She enjoyed outdoor activities, including snow and water skiing, boating and working on the family farm and ranch.

She was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, a national college honor society.

Survivors include her parents; two brothers, Craig and Jered, both of Sargent; one sister, Amy of Sargent; one grandmother, Virginia Mauler of Sargent; and a special friend, Thomas McCaslin of Broken Bow.

She was preceded in death by two grandparents, Fred Mauler and Bonnie Krestin.

Agnes Ptacnik

ORD -- Agnes Ptacnik, 90, of Ord died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Monday with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. at the Ord Memorial Chapel.

Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Darrow Sems

ALDA -- Darrow M. Sems, 83, of Alda, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at the St. Francis Memorial Health Center of Grand Island.

He was cremated and memorial services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Doug Stensby will officiate.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Sems was born icon on Dec. 27, 1916, in Grand Island to Charles and Elizabeth (Parker) Sems. He grew up in Grand Island and attended Jefferson School and graduated from Grand Island Senior High.

He married Maxine Liedtke on Aug. 25, 1938, in Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island. In 1940, they moved to Hastings where he worked for Western Landrollers. In 1944, they moved back to Grand Island.

In 1948, he began working for the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant as a machinist and during the Vietnam War he was a supervisor. They moved to Alda in 1974. He retired in 1983 from the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant.

He was a member of the Eagles, Platte-Deutsche and a former member of the International Association of Machinists, the Grand Island Rifle Club, and the National Rifle Association. He was a Santa helper at the Conestoga Mall for many years.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Roland "Bud" and Melvin, both of Grand Island and Raymond of Boling, Texas; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; three brothers, Jim of North Platte, Ronald of Unidilla and Robert of Lincoln; and two sisters, Gwendolyn White and Eldora Speck, both of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilbur and Leo; and a great-grandson.

Arthur Wagner

LINCOLN -- Arthur Martin Wagner, 76, of Lincoln died Friday, July 21, 2000, at Lincoln.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Evangelical Free Church in Lincoln. The Rev. Mark Brunott will officiate. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Phillips.

There will be no visitation. Mr. Wagner was cremated.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Roper and Sons Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wagner was born icon Nov. 1, 1923, to Rufus and Christine (Christensen) Wagner in Phillips. He was a life insurance agent.

He was a member of the First Evangelical Free Church, President's Club of Woodmen Accident & Life, American Legion Post No. 3. He was a World War II Army veteran, 87th Infantry Division, Patton's Third Army.

Survivors include his wife, Margit of Lincoln; a son, Lee of Lincoln; two grandsons; one granddaughter and one brother, Robert L. of Grand Island.

Rex Otto

Rex J.H. Otto, 89, of Grand Island died Wednesday, July 19, 2000.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Kleine Funeral Home. The Rev. Cheryl Lamb will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church or donor's choice.

Mr. Otto was born icon June 20, 1911, at Prosser to Christian and Daisy (Hayse) Otto. He received his education at Prosser.

He married Helen Burmood on Oct. 11, 1930, in Kansas. As a young man he became well known as a saxophone player in a dance orchestra. He played for area commuity dances while living in Prosser. In the early 1940s, they bought a farm near Wood River and he continued farming and cattle feeding.

He also worked at the sugar beet factory in Wyoming for a short time. In 1963 the family moved to Grand Island where he became associated with Daly Realty and Insurance. Later he formed the Otto-Sheeks Real Estate and Development Firm and he was instrumental in developing Ramada Inn, now Best Western Riverside Inn, Capital Heights area, and Wildwood South area, as well as the Rainbow Lake area on South Blaine Street.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Grand Island Realtor Association. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, horse races, gardening and playing cards. While young he mastered the art of playing the harmonica and played until his death.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Larry of Olathe, Kan.; two daughters, Vi Sheeks of Grand Island and Evie (Mrs. Ron) Laub of Grand Island; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Basil Otto of Prosser.

He was preceded in death by one granddaughter; three great-grandsons; and three sisters, Marjorie, Hazel and Mildred.

Raine Rapp

Raine Joe Rapp, 15 days old, infant daughter of Billy J. and Morgan D. (Meyer) Rapp of Grand Island, died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at Children's Hospital in Omaha.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Children's Hospital or Rainbow House in Omaha.

Edwin Gappa

ASHTON -- Edwin Gappa, 86, of Ashton died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Paplin. The Rev. Michael McDermott will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Carmel Cemetery with graveside military honors by American Legion Post 108 of Ashton.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday with a 7:30 p.m. vigil service at St. Francis Catholic Church in Ashton.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Peters Funeral of Loup City is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gappa was born icon April 15, 1914, on the family farm northwest of Paplin to Bernard and Mary (Blazey) Gappa. He attended Sherman County rural school and Mount Carmel Parochial School.

He grew up n the family farm and was a church organist at Mount Carmel Church and was a member of the Gappa Orchestra with his brothers and sisters.

He married Lucille Dymek on Feb. 14, 1942, at Chicago. He then served in the United States Army from October 1942 to November 1945. While in the service he was a military policeman and played in the Army band. When he returned from the war, he and his wife farmed north of Ashton, the rest of his life.

He enjoyed fishing, baseball and polka music.

He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church at Ashton and a former member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church of Paplin.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Jean (Mrs. Raymond) Stenka of Ainsworth, Diane (Mrs. Mike) Chelewski of Arcadia and Donna (Mrs. Dennis) Fells of Mulvane, Kan.; two sons, Norman of Ashton and Richard of Grand Island; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Albert Gappa of Ashton.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Wanda Woitalewicz and Emma Pokorski and two brothers, Leo and Alphonso Gappa.
