Darlene Brinkley

Darlene L. Brinkley, 75, of Grand Island died Monday, May 1, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Denton Jantzi will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.

Mrs. Brinkley was born icon on April 9, 1925, in Greeley County to Floyd and Wilhelmena (Beck) Jeffres. She graduated from Scotia High School. She moved to Central City in 1944.

While living in Central City, she volunteered for the hospital and was chairwoman of the Merrick County American Cancer Society. She was president of the Junior Woman's Club in Central City and taught Sunday school at the Methodist Church for many years. She also owned and operated the Brown Bison Restaurant.

She moved to Omaha in 1966. She served as a counselor and house parent for the Nebraska School for the Deaf and obtained an associate's degree in art. She moved to Grand Island in the mid-1970s, and lived here until entering the Good Samaritan Center in September 1999.

She loved art and music and was very involved with volunteer work.

Survivors include one daughter, Gwen (Mrs. Tom) Luschei of Laughlin, Nev.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald "Mick" Jeffres of Burwell; and three sisters, Corrine Kesterson and Caroljean Samway, both of Grand Island, and Gayle Wilson of Elba.

She was preceded in death by one brother, DeLysle Jeffres.

Nellie Gould

Nellie G. Gould, 92, of 412 N. White, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Gould's body will be cremated and a memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Vernon Wood

Vernon H. Wood, 74, of Grand Island, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Julie Bringelson will officiate. Burial will be at the Souleville Cemetery in Boelus.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Kleine Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 4 to 7 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist church, American Cancer Society or the donor's choice.

Mr. Wood was born icon March 23, 1926, at Boise City, Okla. to Oscar and Daisy Bell "Powers" Wood. He moved as a young boy with his family and received his education in Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in the Luson Island Campaign from 1944 until May 1945.

On Dec. 10, 1946, he married Evelyn Hughes. They lived in the Boise City, Okla. area and moved to Nebraska in 1954, first to Taylor for a year and then Merna.

In 1966 they moved to Columbus for two years and then back to Merna, then to Kearney and Grand Island in 1971. Mrs. Wood died in 1995. He was a farmer and cattle feeder most of his life, and had worked at New Holland before retiring due to an injury and ill health.

He married Louise Holder-Morrison on May 2, 1998, in Grand Island. They lived in Grand Island.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the church choir, and was serving as president of the First United Methodist Men. He was active in the Interfaith Community choir and the Inspiration's Gospel Vocal Group.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Vernon Jr. "Woody" of Bassett; two daughters, Frances (Mrs. Joe) Brockman of Lawrence and Mary (Mrs. Richard) Lehn of Worms; one stepson, Jeff Morrison of Atlanta; one stepdaughter, Stacia Morrison of Grand Island; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; two brothers, John of Grand Island and Allen of Stockton, Calif.; and three sisters, Eleanor Homan of Capers Cove, Texas, Alta Larkin of Denver, and Dora (Mrs. Rick) Johnson of Mesa, Ariz.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Jere, a granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.

Isabel Brown

CLARKS -- Isabel Brown of Clarks died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services are pending with Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

'Bob' Bohnart

SHELTON -- Robert "Bob" L. Bohnart, 62, of Shelton died Friday, April 28, 2000, at the Veterans Hospital in Grand Island.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelton. The Rev. Ray Kosmicki will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Wood River.

There will be no visitation. Apfel Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Doniphan American Legion or the donor's choice.

Edith Geene

CENTRAL CITY -- Edith Pettey Geene, 67, of Central City, formerly of York and Rancho Cordova, Calif., died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Integrated Health Services in Central City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Higby Mortuary Chapel in Aurora. The Rev. Harry Brown will officiate.

Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.

Mrs. Geene was born icon on June 26, 1932, in San Diego to Walter E. and Jennie (Nofziger) Pettey. She attended San Diego Union Academy and graduated from high school in 1953. She attended La Sierra College in La Sierra, Calif., for two years.

She married Robert C. Geene on Dec. 23, 1994. She retired from the Sacramento County District Court clerk's office in 1995 after 10 years of service.

She enjoyed reading, crafts, sewing and garage sales.

Survivors include five daughters, Jenni (Mrs. Craig) Falmlen of Aurora, Gale Simcoe of Lincoln, Melissa (Mrs. Craig) Marshall of Colfax, Calif., Melinda Messeer-Hunt of Fresno, Calif., and Sarajane Smith of Grants Pass, Ore.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a brother, Galen A. Pettey of Prosser, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

George Huhman

SPALDING -- George A. Huhman, 78, of Spalding died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Friendship Villa in Spalding.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding. The Rev. Joe Hannappel will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Spalding.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with rosaries at 4:30 and 8 p.m., Thursday at Dolce Scheef Mortuary in Spalding.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Mr. Huhman was born icon on Feb. 24, 1922, on a farm northeast of Primrose to John and Louise (Vanderloop) Huhman. He attended rural grade school and then farmed with his father until 1945. He farmed in the Spalding area until he retired and moved to Spalding.

He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and St. Michael's Men's Club.

He enjoyed bowling and keeping score at Kealy's Tavern and Bowl.

Survivors include four sisters, Delores Henman of Grand Island, Monica Griesman of Spalding, Rita Doll of Carlile, Iowa, and Elizabeth Johnson of Kansas City, Kan.; and one brother, Anthony "Bud" of Broken Bow.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary, Sally and Helen; and four brothers, Henry, Paul, Francis and Mick.

Marvin Lukasiewicz

FARWELL -- Marvin G. Lukasiewicz, 67, of Farwell died Monday, May 1, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Farwell. The Rev. Larry Coulter will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery near Farwell with graveside military honors by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. vigil service, Wednesday at the church.

Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Mr. Lukasiewicz was born icon on Feb. 6, 1933, at Farwell to Edward and Elda (Jorgensen) Lukasiewicz. He attended St. Anthony's Parochial School and graduated from Farwell High School in 1950. While growing up, he worked with his father at Lukasiewicz Hardware. He later graduated from Boyles College in Omaha and worked as a telegrapher/dispatcher for the Union Pacific Railroad.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1957.

He married Sandra M. Jamrog on Sept. 28, 1957, at Ashton. The couple lived in Farwell throughout their marriage. He worked as a rural mail carrier for many years.

He enjoyed fishing and talking about fishing.

He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, where he taught CCD and was a lector and eucharistic minister. He was a member and worker in the Cursillos in Christianity in the Grand Island Diocese and was a member of the Nebraska Rural Mail Carrier Association.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Sue Lukasiewicz of Hastings; two sons, John and Tom, both of Omaha; three grandsons; one brother, Vian Lukasiewicz of Farwell; and one sister, Erdice Yearley of Lincoln.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jean Marie Lukasiewicz; two sons, Glen and Bob; and one brother, Darryl.

Edna Stranberg

CENTRAL CITY -- Edna Viola Stranberg, 84, of Central City died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Long-term Care in Central City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Evangelical Free Church in Central City. The Rev. David Hoesch will officiate. Burial will be in Mamre Evangelical Church Cemetery near Marquette.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. It will continue from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.

Mrs. Stranberg was born icon on April 14, 1916, at Fairfax, S.D., to Eddie and Elma (Mostrom) Dahlberg. She was educated in the Randall Valley area of South Dakota. She later moved to Omaha and did domestic work.

She married Arvid Stranberg on Sept. 29, 1938, in Omaha. Mr. Stranberg entered the military during World War II, and Mrs. Stranberg accompanied him to Virginia.

While in Virginia, she managed the USO kitchen. The couple later moved to Central City, where Mrs. Stranberg worked for the Central City public schools in the cafeteria until her retirement.

She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Central City, where she taught Sunday school and was active in the White Cross women's group. She served as a den mother for her sons' Boy Scout troops and was a longtime volunteer for the Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital thrift shop.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Richard Stranberg of Central City and Randy Stranberg of David City; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Judy Slama, Alice Kause, Edlan Olson, Gladys Swanson and Bernie Bower.
