Donald Havel

MILLIGAN -- Donald R. "Mick" Havel, 78, of Milligan, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, in Lincoln.

Mr. Havel's body was cremated. Burial of the ashes will be at a later date.

Farmer and Son Funeral Home of Geneva is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Milligan Rescue Unit.

Mr. Havel was born icon July 9, 1921, at Milligan to Emil and Tonie (Laun) Havel.

He was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Helen of Milligan; a daughter, Norene (Mrs. William) Fitzgerald of Exeter; two sisters, Sister M. Frances Ann Havel of Grand Island and Virgie (Mrs. Bill) Smith of Lincoln; and four stepgrandchildren.

Rozena Hughes

HILDRETH -- Rozena L. Hughes, 78, of Hildreth, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney. The Rev. Kim Stover will officiate. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at the Arcadia Cemetery in Arcadia.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

A memorial will be established to the family.

Mrs. Hughes was born icon Nov. 29, 1921, in Ansley to Fredrick and Rhoda (Amsberry) Fricke. She attended school in Comstock.

She married Jasper L. Slagle in Taylor in 1938. They lived in the Sargent area.

She married Alvin Hughes in Taylor in 1950. They lived in the Weissert and Sargent area. They moved to Kearney in 1964. She worked for Good Samaritan Hospital as a nurse's aide. She later worked for Baldwin Manufacturing for 25 years until retirement in 1993. She moved to Hildreth the spring of 1993.

She was a member of the Eagles Club, Roustabouts and the Good Sam's Camping Club. She attended the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hildreth.

She enjoyed bowling, camping, fishing, crocheting, traveling and cooking.

Survivors include two sons, Jasper E. Slagle of Springdale, Ark. and William Slagle of Dannebrog; three daughters, Twila Danielson of Hildreth, Lila Day of Alda and Wilma Miller of Hildreth; four brothers, Fred of Ogallala, Clarence of Roscoe, Harold of Kimball and Don of Culbertson; 13 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1982; one sister; two brothers; and four grandchildren.

Darlene Beardsley

NEWCASTLE, Wyo. -- Darlene Jeanette Beardsley, 71, of Newcastle, Wyo., formerly of Comstock, died April 13 at Rapid Regional Hospital in Rapid City, S.D.

Services were April 17 at Worden chapel in Newcastle. The Rev. Trish Underberg will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Mrs. Beardsley was born icon July 15, 1928, in Comstock to Noel and Laura (Manning) Clark. She grew up in Anselmo. She graduated from Anselmo High School in 1945 and continued to live and work in that area.

In August 1948 she married Neil Beardsley. They moved to Newcastle in 1959.

Survivors include five daughters, Christine of Lakewood, Colo., Sandy (Mrs. Dave) Upton of Upton, Wyo. and Marge Sturgis, Joyce (Mrs. Dale) Niswender and Neela, all of Newcastle; two brothers, Larry and Ken Clark; four grandchildren; and a special friend, Lynne Falk.

Ottis Gartside

Ottis V. Gartside, 74, of Grand Island, died Friday, April 28, 2000 at the VA Hospital in Omaha.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, at the Arcadia Cemetery in Arcadia. The Envoy Jim Tooley will officiate.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army.

Mr. Gartside was born icon December 27, 1925 on a farm east of Arcadia to Orval and Nora (Blakeslee) Gartside. He attended Hayes Creek Country School through the ninth grade and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1942. He entered the U.S. Navy on Feb. 23, 1944, serving with the Seventh Fleet in Japan, the Philippines and New Guinea. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

He married Virginia Jean Powell on Jan. 14, 1948 in Kansas. The couple lived in Arcadia where he ranched and farmed. He was on the Board of the Valley County ASCS Committee for nine years.

He moved to Grand Island in 1984 where he worked for the Stauffer Seed Company in Phillips, the Grand Island Independent, St. Francis Memorial Hospital and the Eagles Club. He also worked at the Third City Livestock Co. for several years.

He married Nancy Cords in January of 1986 in Grand Island, where the couple settled and raised cattle.

He enjoyed attending public sales. He was a member of the Arcadia American Legion Club Post #0251, a life member of the V.F.W. Club Post #1347 of Grand Island and a life member of the D.A.V. Post #378170 of Grand Island.

Survivors include one son, Bill Gartside of Lincoln; two daughters, Bonnie (Mrs. Gary) Fernau of Arcadia and Beverly (Mrs. Larry) Nagorski of Wood River; two sisters, Mary Ayres of Lincoln and Doris Hickenbottom of Dallas, Tex.; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Rosemary Mullen

Rosemary J. Mullen, 69, of 719 N. Gunbarrel Rd., died Friday, April 28, 2000 at St. Francis Skilled Care.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Don Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament. A Christian Wake Service will be at 7 p.m. at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the American Cancer Society.

Curran Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Frances Baran

ORD -- Frances Baran, 87, or Ord, died Saturday, April 29, 2000 at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 3 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. Father Jim Warner will officiate.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 2 at the church. There will be a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. also at the church.

Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, the St. Mary's School Endowment or the Ord Rescue Units.

William Douglas

RAVENNA -- William "Bill" Robert Douglas, 74, of Ravenna, formerly of Clarks, died Friday, April 28, 2000 at Del E. Webb Hospital in Sun City West, Ariz.

Services are at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Clarks. The Rev. Don Cleary will officiate. Burial will be at Clarks Cemetery. Solt Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the church. Visitation will be followed by a vigil service.

Mr. Douglas was born icon Feb. 9, 1926, at Clarks to Michael B. and Maude A. (Byrd) Douglas. He grew up in Clarks and graduated from Clarks High School in 1944. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served in World War II. He was honorably discharged and returned to Clarks.

He married Marlene G. Morris on Aug. 11, 1949, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Clarks. They owned and operated Wm. Douglas and Co. Grocery until 1982. They moved to Ravenna where they owned and operated Doug's Super until their retirement in 1987. After retiring, they divided each year between Nebraska and Arizona.

Mr. Douglas was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, and a lifetime member of the Clarks VFW and the Silver Creek American Legion.

He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene of Ravenna; three sons, Robert of Spearfish, S.D., Gregg of Clarks and Mike of Crestline, Calif.; three daughters, Diane (Mrs. Mark) Sutko of Kearney, Deb (Mrs. Randy) Dexter of Central City and Denise (Mrs. Andy) Bolling of Ravenna; a sister, Janet (Mrs. Fritz) Engel of Clarks; one brother, DeWayne of Grand Island; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Don and Jim; and a sister, Jean Bolen.

Virginia Speich

AURORA -- Virginia Speich, 92, of Aurora died Friday, April 28, 2000, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Presbyterian U.C.C. Church in Aurora. The Rev. Monty Nelson will officiate. Burial will be at Stockham Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Higby Mortuary.

Miss Speich was born icon June 8, 1907, at Stockham to Tobias and Barbara (Hefty) Speich. She graduated from Stockham High School. She later graduated from Peru State College and earned a masters degree at the University of Wyoming. She continued study at the University of Nebraska in a program called Masters Plus 30.

She taught at rural schools in the Sandhills for four years. She also lived in Wyoming for three years, and taught at schools in Tecumseh, Valentine and Nevada. She taught at York College for three years and at Chadron State College for 27 years, teaching education and history.

She retired in 1972 and in 1977 she moved to Stockham.

She was preceded in death by two infant sisters, Katherine and Charlotte; a sister, Helen Perry; and two brothers, William T. and Clarence T.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Faye Stewart

ORD -- Faye Stewart, 95, of Ord, died Thursday, April 27, 2000 at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 2 at the Ord United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jim Miller will officiate.

Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Ord Memorial Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the Ord United Methodist Church.

Mr. Stewart was born icon on December 10, 1904 at Ord to William and Margaret (Hull) Stewart. He received his education at Ord and graduated from Ord High School in 1923.

He worked on his family homestead near Haskell Creek where he farmed and worked with his brother in a dairy operation. He delivered milk and cream in Ord and had a bottling franchise which bottled seven different flavors of soda pop.

He was a member of the Ord United Methodist Church and the Ord Elks Lodge #2317. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include one sister, Anne Stewart of Ord.

He was preceded in death by seven sisters, Alta, Estelle, Hazel, Ruth, Aloha, Cora and Ora; and by three brothers, Enos, Ray and Don.
