Velma Campbell

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Velma L. Campbell, 84, of Manhattan, Kan., died March 27, 2000, at Wharton Manor Nursing Home in Manhattan.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan. The Rev. Lawrence Grennan will officiate. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island. The Rev. Frank Hoelck will officiate.

Yogensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home of Manhattan, Kan., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Campbell was born icon Aug. 19, 1915, to Jesse J. and Olive (Waterberry) Man at Colome, S.D. She lived her early life in the Colome area and graduated from Colome High School.

On Nov. 11, 1937, she married Clair V. Campbell in Winner, S.D. They lived for a short time in Sioux City, Iowa, before moving to Grand Island. After the graduation of their two sons from Grand Island Senior High, they moved to Mahattan, Kan., in 1957 where their sons attended Kansas State University.

She was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and held offices and was active in the Eagles, American Legion and V.F.W. Auxiliaries.

She volunteered for the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Wharton Manor and was a member of the Uptown Band at Riley County Seniors' Service Center.

Survivors include two sons, Jimmie of Seabrook, N.H., and Wayne of Indian Wells, Calif.; one brother, Vernon Mann of Hot Springs, S.D.; one sister, Vivian Holechek of Rapid City, S.D.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Stanley Hughes

NEWPORT, N.C. -- Stanley R. Hughes, 56, of Newport, N.C., died Monday, April 3, 2000, at Carteret General Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, N.C. The Rev. Don Myers will officiate. Burial will be in Gethsemane Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Hughes had been involved in bowling since age 12. He worked as a pinsetter at age 14.

In 1984 he joined Carteret-Craven Bowling Association. He was House Director for Carteret Lanes in 1986 and Director of the Year in 1987. He served in many capacities for the association including tournament director, lane inspector and was chairman of the Lane Inspection Committee from 1989 to 1993. He served as vice president of the association from 1994 to 1996 and was president from 1996 to 1998. He became a life member in April 1998.

He also was involved with various adult leagues and youth bowlers and was a certified coach and Junior Olympic coach. He retired from USMC after 30 years.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Cathy of Orlando, Fla., two sons, Jimmy of Sandy Hook, Conn. and Johnny of Orlando, Fla.; three sisters, Violet Spradlin of Apache Junction, Ariz., Dorothy Knight of Chapman and Jewello Deichmann of Central City; one brother, Virgil Hughes of Blanchard, Okla.; four stepchildren; and nine grandchildren.

Katherine Filley-Thornton

Katherine D. Filley-Thornton, 76, of Grand Island died Thursday, March 30, 2000, at the Lakeview Nursing/Rehab Center of Grand Island.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Julie Bringelson will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Filley-Thornton was born icon July 28, 1923, to Francis E. and Fanny (Lamb) Filley at Turney, Mo. She grew up in Missouri and was educated in the Clarksdale, Mo., and Cameron Missouri Public Schools.

She married Marvin Thornton on June 24, 1939, in Trenton, Mo. She was employed as a waitress. The couple later moved to Beatrice where they lived for 10 years where she was employed as a CSM at the Martin Luther Home for seven years. She retired in 1983 and moved to Grand Island. Mr. Thornton died in February 1984.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include five sons, Dean, Roger, and Jim, all of Grand Island, Larry of Cameron, Mo., and Richard of Beatrice; one daughter, Marlene "Bobbie" of Savannah, Mo.; 23 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one brother, Henry Filley of Bethany, Mo., and a sister, Roberta Kress of Hamilton, Mo.

Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by six sisters, three brothers, one daughter, one grandson, one great-granddaughter and an infant sibling.

Bernice Neighbors

Bernice E. Neighbors of Grand Island died Friday, March 31, 2000, at St. Francis Skilled Care.

Services are pending with Kleine Funeral Home.

Robert Phelps

LINCOLN -- Robert H. Phelps, 81, of Lincoln, formerly of Grand Island, died Thursday, March 30, 2000, at the BryanLGH East Campus of Lincoln.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Delvin Roper will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the VFW in Lincoln.

Mr. Phelps was born icon Sept. 20, 1918, to Earl and Bertha (Sagesser) Phelps in Grand Island. He grew up in the Grand Island area and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School. He then worked for Nebraska Consolidated Mills. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1938, serving in World War II on the U.S.S. Tracy and Waller as chief radio man and is a Pearl Harbor survivor. He received his discharge in 1945. He was an electrician for Commonwealth Electrical Contractors for 44 years, retiring in 1987.

He was a member of the VFW in Lincoln, Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, I.B.E.W. Local 265 in Lincoln.

Survivors include two brothers, Paul of Lincoln and John of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank.

C. Glenn Pope

WOOD RIVER -- C. Glenn Pope, 69, of Wood River died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at the St. Francis Skilled Nursing Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Shelton United Methodist Church in Shelton. The Rev. Charles Spence will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Apfel Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pope was born icon Sept. 8, 1930, to Clarence and Ethel (Book) Pope in Shelton. He graduated from Shelton High School in 1948. He entered the U.S. Army on Aug. 6, 1951, and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from the service on June 19, 1953. After leaving the service, he returned to Shelton and farmed with his father.

He married Carolyn Ripp in 1958 in Shelton. He then went to work for Consolidated Blenders Inc. in Abbot. He retired in 1996.

He was a 50-year member of the American Legion.

Survivors include four sisters, Dorothy Largent of Overland Park, Kan., Ila Wood of North Platte, Virginia Luebs of Wood River and Loma (Mrs. Harold) Campbell of Mission, Texas.

Alois Bader

SEWARD -- Alois Vincent Bader, 84, of Seward, died Sunday, March 26, 2000, at Seward.

Services were Thursday at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Seward. The Rev. Brad Zitek with co-celebrants, the Revs. Tom Ryan, Jim Schmitt, Harold Kurtenbach and Jose Chavez officiated. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery at Seward.

Wood-Zabka Funeral Home of Seward was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bader was born icon Feb. 6, 1916, in McKitrick, Mo. to Leo J. and Nellie (Buecker) Bader. He attended school in Missouri during his early years and moved to Tamora in 1926. In the 1930's he served in the Nebraska National Guard.

He married Marie Therese Prochnow on Oct. 12, 1940, in Grand Island. They lived all of their married life in Seward County. He was a farmer and cattle feeder and with Charles Jirovsky was a residential developer in Seward.

He was a member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church, a charter member of the National Cattleman's Association, serving as national vice president. He was also a member of the Seward Chamber of Commerce, a benefactor of the Foundation for Memorial Health Care Systems of Seward, and a benefactor to the City of Seward.

He is survived by his wife; four sisters, Theresa Spher and Genevieve Sopher, both of Aurora, Sister Mary Barbara Bader, C.S.J. of Grand Island and Nellie (Mrs. Bernard) McMahon of Giltner; and one brother, Jerome of Hampshire, Ill.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Karol Kay, one sister, Barbara Guthmann and two brothers, Urban and an infant brother Henry.

"Zeb" Hruby

LAFAYETTE, Ill. -- Zebulin "Zeb" J. Hruby, 18, of LaFayette, Ind., formerly of Grand Island, died March 21, 2000, in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 34 in Kewanee, Ill.

He was born icon March 14, 1982, in Grand Island to Steven and Deborah (Koehler) Hruby. He attended Walnut Junior High School before moving to Illinois.

Survivors include his mother, Deborah Koehler of LaFayette, Ill., his father, Steven Hruby of Grand Island; two sisters, Melissa Fern of Kewanee, Ill. and Stephanie Hruby of Lafayette; and his grandmother, Kathleen Koehler of Grand Island.

Katherine Filley

Katherine (Thornton) Filley, 76, of Grand Island, died Thursday, March 30, 2000, at Lakeview Nursing and Rehab Center.

Services are pending at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Melvin Burge

HASTINGS -- Melvin D. Burge, 66, of Hastings died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at the St. Francis Skilled Care Unit in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Hastings. The Rev. Earl Higgins will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens at Hastings.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice or the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Burge was born icon on Dec. 1, 1933, in Jewell County, Kan., to Oscar K. and Thora M. (Smith) Burge.

He married Grace I. Kudrna on Jan. 17, 1954, in Cowles. He served in the U.S. Army from Aug. 14, 1956, to May 14, 1958. He worked for Hastings Utilities for many years and later worked at Ace Hardware.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Eagles.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Audrey Peterson of Hastings; four sons, Darrell and Brian of Aurora, Mo., and Brad and Lynn of Norfolk; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; and four brothers, Marlin of Webber, Kan., Dale of Goodman, Mo., Ronnie of Neosho, Mo., and Dean of Texas.

He was preceded in death by three grandchildren, one sister and one brother.
