Dr. Martin Carlson

Dr. Martin Evald Carlson, 94, of Grand Island died Thursday, March 23, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Messiah Lutheran Church. The Rev. Gret-chen Diers will officiate. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the Palmer Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday at All Faiths Funeral Home, 2929 S. Locust.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Dr. Carlson was born icon on Nov. 5, 1905, in Saronville to Carl Anton and Clara (Monson) Carlson. He was raised on the family farm near Saronville. He graduated from Sutton High School and received his associate of arts at Luther College in 1933, bachelor of arts from Augustana College in 1938, master of arts from the University of Northern Colorado in 1947 and doctorate from the University of Nebraska in 1963.

He taught at Clay County from 1924 to 1929 and at Saronville from 1933 to 1936. He was principal at Palmer from 1938 to 1940 and superintendent at Palmer from 1940 to 1942. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1945. He was an instructor and coach at Luther College in Wahoo from 1948 to 1955.

He married Blanche Johnson on Sept. 13, 1949, in Marysville, Kan.

He was vice president and dean of Luther College from 1955 to 1962 and taught social sciences at Kearney State College from 1962 to 1977. He was a social science curriculum specialist from 1967 to 1969 and general education curriculum specialist in 1968-69 for the Title 3 Nebraska State Colleges curriculum development project.

He was a member of many education and historical associations.

He was Kiwanian of the Year and Kiwanis lieutenant governor in 1968. He was chairman of the New Club Building Nebraska and Iowa in 1971 and 1972. He was a Lutheran lay preacher, a Bible teacher and sponsor of the Campus Crusade for Christ International at Kearney State College and sponsored the Young Democrats at Kearney State.

His honors included graduating Summa Cum Laude at Augustana College and Phi Alpha Theta.

He retired from teaching in 1977 and held Realtor/broker/insurance licenses. He worked for ERA Conestoga Realty.

He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Dale Carlson of Grand Island; a stepson, Roger Mueller of Grand Island; and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Mary Gift

BROKEN BOW -- Mary E. Gift, 88, of Broken Bow died Thursday, March 23, 2000, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

Services are pending with Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Wilbur Johannsen

KEARNEY -- Wilbur "Pete" Johannsen, 85, of Kearney died Friday, March 24, 2000, at St. John's Good Samaritan Center in Kearney.

Services will be at 11 a.m. MST Monday at the Ogallala Cemetery. The Rev. Ronald Ebb will officiate.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday at O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney.

Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Health Systems Oncology Center or the donor's choice.

Mr. Johannsen was born icon on Dec. 10, 1914, in Arthur to Edd and Mayme (Belden) Johannsen. He was educated in the Arthur area.

He married Deloris Helmer on Sept. 27, 1934, in Ogallala. The couple lived in Arthur County, where they farmed and ranched. In 1946, they moved to Gibbon's Buckeye Valley, where they farmed. They retired in 1980 and moved to Kearney. Mrs. Johannsen died on Oct. 22, 1999.

Mr. Johannsen enjoyed farming and raising cattle.

Survivors include three sons, Duane of Gibbon, Lowell of Lexington and Waldo of Gibbon; two daughters, Bonnie Skeen of Grand Island and Connie Wilcox of Norfolk; 20 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two infant grandchildren; a brother, Carston; and a sister, Beaulah.

Mary Norman

ORD -- Mary C. Norman, 89, of Ord died Thursday, March 23, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Ord United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ord Memorial Chapel, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the church or the Valley County Hospital Foundation.

Clarence Siwinski

ASHTON -- Clarence I. Siwinski, 89, of Ashton died Friday, March 24, 2000, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.

Services are pending with Peters Funeral Home of Loup City.

Margaret Schoel

Margaret Paulsen Schoel, 94, of Riverside Lodge died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at her granddaughter's home in Omaha.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She married Jerry Stahlnecker in 1935. She moved to San Diego in 1937. She returned to Grand Island in 1947. She was hired in the light and water office in 1955. She worked there until her retirement in 1970.

Survivors include a son, Jerry Paulsen Stahlnecker of Omaha; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Kathleen Steele.

George Swartz

George W. Swartz, 74, of Grand Island died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at his home.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dennis Reich will officiate. Mr. Swartz will be cremated after the services, and private family burial will be at a later date.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Friday at Kleine Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Mr. Swartz was born icon on Aug. 24, 1925, on the family farm north of Grafton to William and Rose (Riek) Swartz. He attended York College and received bachelor's and master's degrees in economics from the University of Nebraska. He received a second master's degree in media with an emphasis in reference library science. He also studied English literature and composition at Hastings College.

He taught for one year at Cambridge and four years at the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture. He served for two years in the U.S. Army of occupation in western Europe.

He joined the Walnut Junior High staff in August 1954 and became audio visual supervisor for the Grand Island school system in 1966. He became media specialist at Senior High in 1980 and retired in May 1988.

He married Carol McGraw on July 3, 1959, in Grand Island.

He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church; national, Nebraska and Grand Island education associations; Stuhr Museum; Saddle Club; and American Legion. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the CTU.

He raised grapes, lemons and a flower garden. He enjoyed music and reading.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Renee (Mrs. Randy) Mendyk of Grand Island, Laurel (Mrs. John) Humphrey of Arlington, Texas, and Carla Swartz of Omaha; three grandchildren; one sister, Darlene Miltner of Lincoln; and one brother, Don of Bella Vista, Ark.

'Beanie' Beck

CLARKS -- Albion Bernard "Beanie" Beck, 74, of Clarks died Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at Columbus Community Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Clarks. The Rev. Donald Cleary will officiate. Burial will be in the Clarks Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m., Friday at the church.

Mr. Beck was born icon on Aug. 20, 1925, in Clarks to Metro and Mary (Derbala) Beck. He grew up in the Clarks area and graduated from Clarks High School in 1943. Mr. Beck entered the U.S. Army in 1950, served in Korea and was discharged in 1952.

He married Alyce M. Taaczek on Oct. 16, 1952, in Genoa. They farmed in the Clarks area. Mrs. Beck died on Feb. 27, 1993.

Mr. Beck was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Clarks, the Clarks Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion post in Silver Creek.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet (Mrs. Mike) Mahoney of St. Edward and Sandra (Mrs. Kevin) Smoyer of Grand Island; two sons, Tom of Clarks and Sam of Columbus; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Charles and Donald, both of Clarks; and seven sisters, Josephine Beck of West Point, Anna Starostka of Osceola, Katherine Kowenski, Dorothy Gonsior and Barbara Savage, all of Columbus, Rose Anderson of Polk and Stella Gonsier of Central City.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Walter.

Mary Norman

ORD -- Mary C. Norman, 89, of Ord died Thursday, March 23, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are pending at Ord Memorial Chapel.

Plin Robotham

MARQUETTE -- Plin Robotham, 76, of Marquette died Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at Memorial Hospital Long-term Care in Aurora.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Aurora. The Rev. Joe Scahill will officiate. Burial will be in Richland Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.

Mr. Robotham was born icon on June 10, 1923, at Oak Valley near Raymond to Harry Pliny and Etta (Brown) Robotham. He grew up on a farm near Pleasant Dale. He attended Highland Elementary School and graduated from Malcolm High School in 1941.

His first job was hauling cement in a wheelbarrow to pave Highway 34. He worked for several years as a farm hand at Elkhorn and then at Tamora.

He married Carol Grace Petsch on March 10, 1946, at Malcolm. They moved in 1947 to Tamora, where he farmed for seven years. The family moved to a dairy farm near Marquette in 1954 and to their own dairy farm in 1974. They moved to Marquette in 1988.

He loved dairy cows and worked with them his entire life.

He was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church at Malcolm, Marquette and then Aurora. He served on the Pastor Parish Committee for many years. He was initiated into Utica Lodge A.F. and A.M. on May 18, 1951, and later transferred to Friendship Lodge 239 A.F. and A.M. in Chapman, where he was worshipful master for four years. He was a member of Laura Mae Chapter 251 of the Order of the Eastern Star, served as worthy patron seven times and received an Achievement Award from the Grand Lodge of Nebraska. He was Marquette Fire District secretary for many years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert of Milford and Steven of Marquette; one daughter, Carolin Skordas of Pone Vedra Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren; four brothers, Frank, Leonard, Donald and Earl, all of Pleasant Dale; and one sister, Harriett Booher of Santa Rosa, Calif.

He was preceded in death by one son, William.
