Violette Lingwall

STROMSBURG -- Violette Marie Lingwall, 94, of Stromsburg died Sunday, March 19, 2000, at Columbus Community Hospital.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Midwest Covenant Home Chapel in Stromsburg. The Rev. Keith Brozek and Chaplain Dick Bauer will officiate. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg. Memorials are suggested to Salem Lutheran Church, Midwest Covenant Home, Bethphage Mission in Axtell or the donor's choice.

Mrs. Lingwall was born icon on Oct. 9, 1905, at Stromsburg to Jonas A. and Mary (Hedman) Anderson. She graduated from Stromsburg High School in 1922 and started teaching at a rural school at age 16. She attended Luther College, Wahoo and Gustavus Adophus in St. Peter, Minn. She taught in various rural schools near Stromsburg and Bertrand before her marriage.

She married the Rev. Martin B. Lingwall in 1933. They served parishes in Harcourt, Iowa; Brainerd, Minn.; Orion, Ill.; Axtell; the Department of Evangelism at Augustana Lutheran Church in Minneapolis; and Denver.

Upon retirement, they lived in Good Samaritan Village in Hastings until they moved to Park Villa in Stromsburg in 1989. She entered Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg in September 1999 as her health declined.

She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Stromsburg.

Survivors include one son, James B. of Austin, Texas; one daughter, Beverly (Mrs. David) Mooney of West St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Milton Anderson; and five sisters, Mildred, Myrtle, Maud and Vera Anderson and Mabel Westring.

'Gene' Murphy

SPALDING -- Emmet Eugene "Gene" Murphy, 83, of Spalding died Sunday, March 19, 2000, at Friendship Villa in Spalding.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding with the Revs. James Murphy and Joe Hannappel officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery with military honors.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the church with rosaries at 4:30 and 8 p.m.

Dolce-Scheef Mortuary of Spalding is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Murphy was born icon on Oct. 28, 1916, on the family farm north of Spalding to James Emmet and Margaret (O'Brien) Murphy. He attended District 39 School in Greeley County. He helped his father on the farm and then worked for his uncle, P.W. McManaman. He and his friend Louis Berger traveled to Worthington, Minn., where he worked on a farm.

He lived in Minnesota until he was drafted into the Army during World War II. He served two years, six months on Adak in the Aleutians and held the rank of staff sergeant. He was discharged in 1945.

He married Eula Sills on May 6, 1946, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Primrose. The Murphys farmed in the Akron community. He purchased the Case implement business in 1960 in Albion. Mr. Murphy sold the implement business in 1991 and moved to Friendship Villa on Dec. 29, 1994.

He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Betty (Mrs. Bill) Logan of Lincoln; one son, Patrick of Lincoln; one grandson; two sisters, Alice McCarthy of North Platte and Noreen Kearns of Seattle; and four brothers, Cletus, the Rev. James and Frank of Spalding and Mike of Grand Junction, Colo.

Robert Otto

ORD -- Robert W. Otto, 50, of Ord, formerly of Scotia, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at his home at the Parkview Village at Ord.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Ord United Methodist Church. The Revs. Jim Miller and Marlin Rasmussen will officiate. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery at North Loup.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Ord Memorial Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Otto was born icon Jan. 8, 1950, at Ord to Art and Millie (Barnes) Otto. He grew up in Valley County and attended rural Valley County Schools, later North Loup Grade School and graduated from North Loup High School in 1968.

He went to work for the Grand Island Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant for two years and then worked at Redmond Trailer Houses.

He married Sharon Morrow on April 24, 1971, at the North Loup United Methodist Church. He worked for a short time at Ord Elevator before he helped his father-in-law farm north of Scotia. The couple moved to North Loup for a short time before moving to Ord where he worked for the Carson Rogers Hog farm. Later, they moved to the Geweke Ranch south of Ord.

In 1974 they moved to a farm north of Scotia where Mr. Otto again worked for his father-in-law.

In 1980 they moved to Scotia and he worked at the COOP. In 1983 they moved back to a farm north of Scotia where they ran a dairy until 1991 when they sold the cows because of Mr. Otto's health.

In 1994 Mr. Otto had a kidney and pancreas transplant. He had lost his eyesight and had attended the Nebraska School for the blind in Lincoln in 1992 and 1999.

He was a member of the Horace Mission Church. He had also been active in 4-H and FFA. He enjoyed country music and singing and was a square dance caller.

Survivors include his parents of Kearney; his wife; two daughters, Gina of Wayne and Cory of Lincoln; two sons, Terry of Lincoln and Reid of Scotia; two grandchildren; one brother, Roger of Lexington; and two sisters, Marilyn Wiseman and Barb Markowski, both of Ord.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Adolph Pesek

COMSTOCK -- Adolph Pesek, 81, of Comstock died Monday, March 20, 2000, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Ord United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jim Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the National Bohemian Cemetery west of Ord.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ord Memorial Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the Ord and Comstock fire departments and rescue units.

Mr. Pesek was born icon on July 29, 1918, on the family farm near Comstock to Joseph and Mary (Pravecek) Pesek. He grew up on the farm and was educated at Pleasantview District 53 School.

He married Helen Chalupa on Aug. 23, 1943, at Broken Bow. The couple farmed west of Ord throughout their marriage.

Mr. Pesek enjoyed auctions, cards and playing pool.

Survivors include is wife; five sons, Mike, Lumire and David of Burwell, Richard of Heartwell and Dale of Ord; one daughter, Ione Bruha of Loup City; 21 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Eddie of Ord and Jim of Loup City; and three sisters, Irene Koncel of Comstock and Lydia Chalupa and Rosie Pesek, both of Ord.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert; two brothers, Johnny and Joe; and four sisters, Mary Shiemek, Emma Bruha, Lillie Paider and Mamie Koncel.

Lloyd Bialas

COLUMBUS -- Lloyd Bialas, 75, of Columbus, formerly of Silver Creek, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at Columbus Community Hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus. The Revs. Dan Keller and Mark Tomasiewicz will officiate. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery in Columbus, with military rites by Hartman American Legion Post No. 84 Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus, with a rosary at 4 p.m. and vigil at 7:30 p.m. that day. Visitation will continue from 8 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Bialas was born icon Nov. 17, 1924, to Charles and Mary (Sturek) Bialas at Nance County.

After graduating from Fullerton High School, he served in the U.S. Army from March 1945 to November 1946 stationed in Hawaii.

He married Rita Swantek on May 25, 1954, at Pilsno. He lived and farmed near Silver Creek for 43 years before moving to Columbus in 1996.

He was a member of St. Bonaventure Church, Hartman American Legion Post No. 84 and former member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Krakow.

He enjoyed fishing and listening to Polish music.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Randy of Holdrege and Robert of Grand Island; two daughters, Joanne of Lincoln and Katherine (Mrs. John) Wright of Columbus; eight grandchildren; eight brothers, Daniel, Edward and Walter all of Silver Creek, Johnnie, Louie and Steve, all of Fullerton and Leonard and Richard, both of Columbus; and four sisters, Dorothy of Columbus, Rosie (Mrs. Ted) Tworek of Omaha, Frances Zelazny of Silver Creek and Belbina Zona of St. Cloud, Minn.

He was preceded in death by two sisters.

Foster 'Bud' Hansen

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Foster S. "Bud" Hansen, 87, of Manhattan, Kan., formerly of Grand Island, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at Mercy Health Center in Manhattan.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Leslie Cole will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Hansen was born icon Foster Schneider on approximately Oct. 1, 1912, at Glenyce, Wyo. When he was 5 years old, his mother died from influenza. He and his brother were adopted by Anthony and Cecelia Hansen.

Mr. Hansen grew up and attended school in Glenyce. Following his education, he worked on area farms to supplement the family income. Upon leaving home, he drove cabs, buses and trucks.

He married Lois Zimmerman of Wyoming. He then moved to Nebraska and work at various jobs.

He married Betty Wessels. They were divorced, and he moved to Scottsbluff, where he worked for a farmer for 11 years. He then moved to Grand Island, where he worked for Goodwill Industries for 11 years.

He married Edna Goochey. He and his wife enjoyed fishing at area lakes. During his retirement years, the Hansens spent a lot of time at the Grand Generation Center for dinner and games.

They moved to Manhattan, Kan., to be closer to family. Due to failing health, he spent the past two years in the Wharton Manor Nursing Home.

Survivors include his wife, five children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Catherine Davis Catherine Joan Davis, 74, of Grand Island died Monday, March 20, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Tim Anderson will officiate.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Davis was born icon on July 3, 1925, at Salt Lake City to William E. and Ann Cook. She grew up in Salt Lake City. She attended Kansas University.

She married Carl W. Davis on Sept. 16, 1944, at New York City. The couple then lived in Kansas.

She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. She worked with the American Cancer Society and the Grand Island Helpline.

She enjoyed playing bridge, gardening and reading.

Survivors include two daughters, Pam Hirschkorn and Diana Carney of Grand Island; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
