Velma Ground
Velma Ground, 72, of Lakeview Nursing Home in Grand Island, formerly of Hastings, died Friday, March 17, 2000, at Lakeview Nursing home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Brand-Wilson Chapel in Hastings. The Rev. Kathleen Kasper will officiate. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens at Hastings.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Ground was born
July 30, 1927, at Lake City, Iowa to Mahlon and Thelma (McCoy) Heath. She attended schools in Iowa.
She moved to Hastings in 1942 and was employed by Mode-O-Day for 14 years. She then worked at the Hastings Regional Center until her retirement in 1992.
She married Raymond Dieken in 1946. Mr. Dieken preceded her in death.
She married Jim Ground in 1976. Mr. Ground preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Judith Thomas and Kathy Hamsher, both of Hastings; one stepdaughter, Cheryl Whitlock of Grand Island; one sister, Dorothy Deschane of Kearney; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and Merle Heath.
Marilyn Jeffries
Marilyn (Kuester) Jeffries, 64, of Grand Island died Monday, March 20, 2000, at her home.
Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Herman Seibold
Herman Seibold, 98, of the Grand Island Veterans Home died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at the veterans home.
Services were on Monday at the Worldwide Church of God in Grand Island. Fred Davis officiated. Burial was in Burkett Cemetery.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Seibold was born
on Sept. 1, 1901, in Fellbach, Germany, to Paul and Pauline (Bauerly) Seibold. He was educated in Germany and was trained as a machinist.
He was a member of the German Youth Reserve during World War I. He came to the United States at the age of 20 to farm with his uncle near Curtis. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from September 1942 until his discharge in March 1943. He lived on the farm near Curtis until moving to the Grand Island Veterans Home in February 1994.
Mr. Siebold was a member of the Worldwide Church of God. He was a musician playing in bands. He loved playing the harmonica.
Survivors include two nieces, Rose Wittwer of McCook and Lydia Hurlburt of Denver; and a nephew, Erwin Beck of Fremont.
Leland Chaffin
BURWELL -- Leland Ora Chaffin, 81, of Burwell died Sunday, March 19, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Burwell. The Rev. Michael Laing will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the church, Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell or the Burwell Ambulance Supply Fund.
Mr. Chaffin was born
on Dec. 4, 1918, in Franklin to Orrin and Edith (Dickerson) Chaffin. The family moved to a ranch north of Burwell on April 1, 1925. Mr. Chaffin attended elementary school at Erina District 11 and took a farm mechanic course in Lincoln.
He married Marie Kruml on Dec. 8, 1937, in Ord. They lived on the same ranch until they retired to Burwell in January 1998 and moved into Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.
He spent his life improving his purebred Hereford cattle herd. The Chaffins hosted the Nebraska Hereford Association tour several times and were honored by the association in 1987. For several years, their ranch hosted a livestock field and judging day. The Chaffins supported 4-H.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, DeeDii Bonsall of Aurora; one son, Bob of Burwell; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers; and one sister, Lois Howart of Burwell.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanne Cain; a granddaughter; a brother, Wayne Chaffin; and a sister, Doris Cass.
John Martindale
CENTRAL CITY -- John Burton Martindale, 78, of Central City died Sunday, March 19, 2000, at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Presbyterian Church in Central City with the Rev. Dale Sallans officiating. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.
Mr. Martindale was born
on July 3, 1921, in Norton, Kan., to Roy and Hazel (Jones) Martindale. He was raised and attended school in Alma and graduated from Alma High School in 1939. He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1941 and served during World War II. He was discharged in 1945.
He married Lola Young on Feb. 2, 1943, in Phillipsburg, Kan. The couple lived in Columbus, Miss., Savannah, Miss., Columbus, Kearney and Alma before retiring to Central City.
He worked for Continental Telephone Co. and General Telephone Co. for 37 years. He worked as a traveling switchman in Kearney and as district manager in Savannah and Kearney. In Columbus, he was plant manager and an engineer before retiring in 1982.
He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Central City, where he served as a deacon and elder. He also was a member of American Legion Post 6, the Masonic Lodge, chamber of commerce and Kearney Lions Club.
In his retirement, he volunteered at the Merrick County Health and Fitness Center and the United Presbyterian Church and drove the Legion bus to take children to activities in Grand Island.
He enjoyed Cornhusker games, traveling, fishing, hunting, golfing, gardening and doing handyman jobs.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Jan (Mrs. Joe) Marshall of Grand Island and Jaci (Mrs. James) Nore of Albion; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jeanne Wandfluh; and two brothers, Bob and Dick Martindale.
'Gene' Murphy
SPALDING -- Emmet E. "Gene" Murphy, 83, of Spalding died Sunday, March 19, 2000 at the Friendship Villa in Spalding.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding with the Revs. James Murphy and Joe Hannappel officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery with military honors.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the church with rosaries at 4:30 and 8 p.m.
Robert Otto
ORD -- Robert Otto, 50, of Parkview Village in Ord, formerly of Scotia, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at his home.
Services are pending with Ord Memorial Chapel.
Adolph Pesek
COMSTOCK -- Adolph Pesek, 81, of Comstock died Monday, March 20, 2000, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Ord United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jim Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the National Bohemian Cemetery west of Ord.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Ord and Comstock fire departments and rescue units.
Ann Towns
BROKEN BOW -- Ann E. Towns, 85, of Broken Bow died Saturday, March 18, 2000, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Cliff Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Towns was born
on June 12, 1914, at Broken Bow to Fred A. and Bertha (Pummel) Bates. She graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1932 and attended Stevens College in Missouri for one year.
She married Everett Towns on July 30, 1933. They lived in Broken Bow, where they owned and operated the International Implement business for many years. Mr. Towns died in 1983.
Mrs. Towns was a member of the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow.
Survivors include two sons, Dennis of Hastings and Dick of Broken Bow; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Mose Ceballos
LEXINGTON -- Mose Mecario Ceballos, 75, of Lexington died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at University Hospital in Denver.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington. The Rev. Tom Mullowney will officiate. Burial will be in St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery with military rites.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Reynolds-Love Chapel. A wake service will be at 7 p.m. at the chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Ceballos was born
on March 10, 1925, in Lexington to Guadalupe Ceballos and Jesuscita Ceballos (Ybarra). He attended grade school in Joslyn and high school in Lexington, where he played football.
He served in the U.S. Army infantry from 1943 to 1945. He was captured in Metz, France, and spent six months as a prisoner of war in Germany. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three bronze battle stars, Good Conduct Medal, two Overseas Service Bars and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He returned to Lexington in 1945.
He married Naomi Adams in June 1946. He played on the Aztecas (later called the 201 Club) baseball team. He worked at a local alfalfa mill for a year before going to work for the Union Pacific Railroad. He became a maintenance of way section foreman.
He married Betty Callahan on June 8, 1974. Mr. Ceballos retired in May 1985 after 38 years with the railroad. He moved to Brush, Colo., in October 1998.
He enjoyed handing out quarters, half-dollars, suckers and candy to any child he met in a restaurant or on the street.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Ex-POWs and St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington.
Survivors include one son, Randy of Wood River; one daughter, Tammy (Mrs. Jack) Ward of Brush, Colo.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Angelita (Mrs. Joe) Belmudez of Kearney; and one brother, Richard Ceballos of Newkirk, Okla.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; a daughter, two grandchildren, a brother and two sisters.
