Donald C. Smith, 69

(Nov. 8) Donald C. Smith, 69, died on Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.

He was born on August 16, 1930 in Crawford to James and Ollie (Curtis) Smith.

He was a member of the Eagles Club in Crawford.

His Survivors include his sons, Elvin of Albuquerque, N.M., Allen of Crawford and Benjamin; daughters, Relda Hyde of Scottsbluff and Sharon Hoffarth of Monticello, N.M.; brother, Richard of Ogallala; and nine grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. at the Crawford Cemetery with Rev. Tim Pratt officiating.

A memorial has been established. Donations may be sent to the Security First Bank in Crawford.

Chamberlain Chapel of Crawford is in charge of the arrangements.

Howard J. Krause, 65

(Feb. 28) ALLIANCE - Howard J. Krause, 65, died Saturday, Feb. 26, at Box Butte General hospital.

he was born Aug. 20, 1934, at Alliance to Bud and Esther (Gasal) Krause.

He graduated from Alliance High School in 1952, and from the technical college in Milford in 1954.

He married Carolyn Tollman on Sept. 8, 1957.

He worked in agriculture in the Alliance area all of his life. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and trustee, and as a youth group sponsor for several years. he served as a rural school board member for over 25 years. He also was a board member of R.E.A. for 12 years and the Tri-State board of Denver, Colo. As a 4-H leader for 17 years, he was instrumental in getting the beef carcass contest started at the county fair.

His survivors include his wife, Carolyn; two daughters and sons-in-law, Willow and Mark Holoubek of David City and Wendy and Bob Bush of Morrill; six grandchildren, Joe, Luke, Chase and Katie Holoubek of David City and Andrew and Spencer Bush of Morrill.

He is also survived by his mother, Esther Krause of Alliance; brother and sister-in-law, Vic and Jane Krause of Alliance; three aunts, Marcella Krause of Alliance and Agnes Gasal and Lois Gasal of Jamestown, N.D.; Uncle Wilbert Gasal of Jamestown, N.D. and nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

His father precedes him in death.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 1, at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Alliance with the Reverend James Kidd officiating.

Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Presbyterian memorial Scholarship Fund, Prairie haven Hospice or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Natalie Porras Martin, 81

(Feb. 22) CHADRON - Natalie Porras Martin, beloved wife, mother, sister and teacher, died after a lengthy illness in Chadron, on Friday, Feb. 18. She was 81.

She was born to Yrineo Porras and Eusebia Lopez in Martindale, Texas. She spent her early childhood living on a farm embraced by a loving, extended family, which included her three brothers, a sister, grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. In the 1920's, her family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where she grew to be a beautiful young lady who excelled in sports, homemaking, academics and dance. She was good at softball that her nickname was "Babe Ruth." Natalie was very sociable and had many friends.

In 1941, she and Albert Martin of Whitney met and fell in love; and on Jan. 26, 1942, they were married. They had four daughters: Theresa Anne (deceased), Marlena, Elizabeth and Mary Louise. She was a devoted wife and mother. Her children learned about God, social responsibility and the ABC's at her knee. When times were lean, she worked as a waitress, a cook and a seamstress. She took pride in everything she did.

In the 1960's she attended Chadron State College and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education, Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages and Masters Degree. She taught junior and high school Spanish, French and English. She cared a great deal about her students and spent quality time with them, encouraging them to explore their potential. After twenty years of teaching, she retired from Chadron high School and was showered with tributes from her colleagues and students.

In her retirement years she remained active in civic affairs; served as a Spanish translator; tutored persons seeking their GED; and continued to enjoy sewing, gardening and dancing, She was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Patrick's Parish. She also was a member of the Chadron State college Alumnae Association, the Nebraska State Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, the American Legion Auxiliary and other civic and social organizations.

She is survived by her husband, Albert Luevano Martin of Chadron; three daughters, Marlena Richardson of Boston, Mass., Elizabeth Sanchez of Chadron, Mary King of San Diego, Calif.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her sister, Erminia Porras of Kansas City, Kansas; two brothers, Moses Porras of Kansas City, Missouri and Benito Porras of Kansas City, Kansas.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Ed Cortney officiating.

Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Chadron.

A wake service will be held Monday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

She will be remembered with respect and affection by her family, friends, neighbors, colleagues and students. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to St. Patrick's Church or to the Chadron Volunteer Fire Department in care of Community first National Bank, P.O. Box 1001, Chadron, NE 69337.

Garnett E. Hall, 99

(Feb. 22) ALLIANCE - Garnett E. Hall, 99, died Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Good Samaritan Health care Center.

She was born Sept. 2, 1900 at Des Moines, Iowa. Her parents were Thomas P. and Lillie J. (McCarty) Maxwell.

In 1939 was married to Albon B. Hall in Kansas City, Missouri.

She has been an Alliance resident for 60 years and lived on the Hall family ranch south of Alliance.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Christ Scientists and also a member of the Order of Easter Star Chapter No. 260 of Bridgeport for over 50 years.

Her survivors include her two sons and their wives, Jack and Mary Ann Hall and Donald and Mae Hall, all of Alliance; daughter and husband, Nancy and Bob Lockhart of Logan, New Mexico.

She is also survived by three nieces, Mary Jane Felse and Lillian Falk of Des Moines, Iowa and Virginia Stevens of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 12 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Two brothers; daughter, Maxine Kruase and her husband preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 24, at 10 a.m. at Bates-Gould Chapel in Alliance.

Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.

Memorials may be given in care of the Good Samaritan health Care Center.

Linda Samantha Lucas, 39

(Feb. 22) HEMINGFORD - Linda Samantha Lucas, 39, Friday, Feb. 18, at her home in Hemingford.

She was born May 6, 1960, in Kingston Hil, Surrey, England. Her parents were Ronald J. and Ruby E. (Lane) Male.

She was preceded in death by her mother Ruby and sister, Lettie.

She came to the Hemingford area in 1997, and on December 17th of that year she was married to Edward L. Lucas.

Her survivors include her husband and daughter Michele Wolf of Overton; two stepdaughters and son-in-law, Jessica Lucas of Gering and Elizabeth and Chris Steggs of Alliance; and granddaughter, Emily Steggs of Alliance.

She is also survived by her father of Surrey England; and numerous aunts, uncles and nieces of England; Mother-in-law, Zenola Hofmann of Alliance; brother-in-law, Terry Lucas of Alliance; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Deb and Joe Weber of Alliance, plus numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her hobbies included fishing, flower gardening, embroidery and crafts. She was a homemaker and while in England she was the lead singer of the rock band, Filthy Rich, and also worked at the police department.

Memorial services will be Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 1 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene in Hemingford. The Reverend Dale Blake will officiate.

A memorial will be designated at a later time. Donations may be sent in care of the family at P.O. Box 905, Hemingford, NE 69348.

Omer L. Seng, 96

(Feb. 22) ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Omer L. Seng, 96, formerly of Alliance, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, in Albuquerque, N.M., where he had been a resident for the last year.

He was born Feb. 3, 1904, at Clatonia. His parents were William and Martha Seng.

He graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical School in 1930. He practiced medicine three years in Hay Springs. He then moved his family to Alliance where he practiced medicine until his retirement.

Dr. Seng was preceded in death by his wife, Becky Seng in September 1994.

His survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Bob Moedl of Albuquerque, N.M.; three grandchildren, Karl and Theresa Moedl of Yuma, Ariz., Beck Moedl-Hoberecht and her husband Mike of Canton, Mich. and Bobby and Denise Moedl of Albuquerque, N.M., as well as four great-grandchildren, Garrett, Jenna, Delaney and Ryan.

Graveside services will be Friday, Feb. 25, at 10 a.m. at the Alliance Cemetery. The Reverend Mark Schutt will officiate.

The family prefers memorials to the Nebraska Boys Ranch or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Donald L. Ducan, 56

(Feb. 22) North Platte - Donald L. Ducan, 56, died Saturday, Feb. 19, at NHS University Hospital in Omaha.

He was born July 27, 1943, at Alliance. His parents were Calvin James and Mildred Eleanor Osborn Duncan.

He grew up 17 miles north of Hemingford, on a farm and graduated from Hemingford High School in 1963.

He entered the U.S. Army and served a three-year term from 1963 to 1966. After his discharge he worked for Missouri Valley Construction Co. in the North Platte area, building bridges on I-80 and later returned to the Hemingford area to work.

He married Mina Jean Hawthorne on Aug. 26, 1968, at Chadron. They made their home in Grand Island from 1970 to Jan. 1, 1979. In 1979 they moved to North Platte where he went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad in the Maintenance of Way Department as a roadway mechanic.

He was a member of the Bethel Evangelical Free Church in North Platte and had served as a Deacon and a member of the American legion Post No. 9 at Hemingford for 34 years.

His survivors include his wife, Mina of North Platte; two daughters, Donelle Breitenfeldt and Heidi Duncan, all of Omaha.

He is also survived by his mother, Mildred Duncan of Alliance; three brothers, Bob Duncan of Hemingford, Gary Duncan of Denver, Colo., and Roger of Mazanec of Alliance; and several nephews and extended family.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m.(CT), Wednesday, Feb. 23, at the Bethel Evangelical Free Church in North Platte with Pastors Noah Palmer and Pastor Albert Neufeld officiating.

Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. (MT) in the Hemingford Cemetery with military honors provided by the Hemingford American Legion Post No. 9.

Memorials have been established for the Bethel Evangelical Free Church or an organ transplant research.

Odean Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
