Gertrude Winchester

OMAHA -- Gertrude Luzena Stoll Winchester, 93, of Omaha, died Friday, March 3, 2000 in Central City.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Brewer-Korisko Chapel in Omaha. The Rev. Jose Flores will officiate. Burial will be in the Flower Hill Cemetery in Elkhorn.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Brewer-Korisko Chapel.

Mrs. Winchester was born icon Feb. 12, 1907, at Howe to William and Susan B. Palmer. She attended Stella Consolidated Schools and graduated from Omaha public school.

She married William McKinley Winchester on Feb. 12, 1944. She worked at Roberts Dairy Co. in Elkhorn until retirement, when she moved to south Omaha. She lived there until January, when she moved to Central City.

She was a member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Omaha, the DAV Auxiliary, Eagles Auxiliary Aires 154, VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary Post 331 and the Nebraska State Genealogy Society.

Survivors include three sons, Dale of Corinth, Tex., Wayne of Woodbridge Va., and Roy of Albuquerque N.M.; two daughters, Francine (Mrs. Dave) McHargue of Marquette and Judy (Mrs. Richard) Bailey of Omaha; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ralph Thomas of Omaha.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Vivian Drake; and one grandson.

Grace Engel

Grace N. Engel, 79, of Grand Island died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at her home in Grand Island.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Abundant Life Christian Center. The Rev. Stephen Warriner will officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Cairo.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 6 to 9 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to Abundant Life Christian Center.

Mrs. Engel was born icon Oct. 16, 1920, to Roy and Alice (Hale) Dye in Harrison. She was educated at Elm Springs, Ark. She was a member of the Assembly of God at an early age and was taught to put God first in her life.

She married Willis Reed on Jan. 25, 1936. The couple farmed in Arkansas until 1948 when they moved back to Cairo and farmed until 1968. They moved to Grand Island where she worked at the egg plant and later the Nebraska Veterans Home. Mr. Reed died June 23, 1977.

She married Albert Engel. She began working at the Grand Generation Center in 1980. Mr. Engel died in 1984.

Mrs. Engel enjoyed flowers and took many bouquets to the Grand Generation Center and her friends. She also enjoyed working in her garden and sharing vegetables with her friends. She spent many hours at Skate Island with her children.

Survivors include four sons, Samuel Reed of Kingman, Kan., Earl Reed of Norfolk, Va., Eugene Reed of Hastings and Jerry Reed of Elgin, Texas; four daughters, Alice Pratt, Louise (Mrs. Dave) Carr and Betty Stephens, all of Grand Island and Pearl (Mrs. Norman) Mead of Wood River; one stepdaughter, Eileen (Mrs. Dave) Steinbeck of Doniphan; three stepsons, Charles Engel, John Engel and Danny Engel; 27 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by one son, Harold Reed; four brothers and one sister.

Viola Bugay

FULLERTON -- Viola A. Bugay, 92, of Fullerton died March 2, 2000, at her home in Fullerton.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fullerton. The Rev. Don Cleary will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday with a 7 p.m. rosary at the Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton.

Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton is in charge of arrangements.

Winifred Carson

CRETE -- Winifred Anita Storm Carson, 83, of Crete, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Crete Manor.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fairmont Cemetery in Fairmont. The Rev. Ken West will officiate.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Monday at the Wadlow-Rozanek Colonial Chapel in Lincoln.

Mrs. Carson was born icon Feb. 26, 1917 to Adam and Jesse (Haskin) Storm. As a small child she lived on a South Dakota homestead with her parents and maternal grandparents.

She later lived in and traveled through most of Nebraska until her family settled in Malcom when she was a teenager. When Mrs. Carson was 16, her mother died.

After her mother's death, Mrs. Carson and her father moved to Fairmont where she graduated from Fairmont High School.

She met Ora Dale Carson in Fairmont and they married in 1935. Mr. Carson died in 1993.

She enjoyed children and animals. She helped family members in need.

Survivors include her son, Richard, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Lottie Kriss

ORD -- Lottie Kriss, 92, of Ord died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at her home in Ord.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Ord Evangelical Free Church. The Revs. John Campbell and Ernest Moravec will officiate. Burial will be in the Douglas Grove Cemetery at Comstock.

Visitation will be prior to service time Monday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kriss was born icon March 5, 1907, to Leroy and Lucy (Wayne) Niles at Ericson. At the age of 10, she moved west of Taylor and attended the Knotty Ridge School until the eighth grade and then went to Sargent High School.

She married James A. Kriss on Sept. 2, 1926, at North Platte. The couple lived on a farm north of Comstock for 62 years. Mr. Kriss died June 15, 1989. In 1990, she moved to Parkview Village in Ord. In 1995, she moved into her daughter's home in Ord.

She attended the Evangelical Free Church. She enjoyed gardening and flowers.

Survivors include two daughters, Emily Van Dyke of Grand Island and Wanda Erks of Ord, 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Norman, and two granddaughters.

Bertha Palu

CENTRAL CITY -- Bertha Palu, 89, of Central City died Friday, March 3, 2000, at IHS Community Care in Central City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Central City. The Rev. Nelson Newman will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the church followed by a 7 p.m. vigil service.

Solt Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Palu was born icon on March 24, 1910, to John and Mary (Lewandowski) Kosmicki near Loup City. She attended Loup City schools.

She married Edward Palu on May 10, 1927, in Loup City. They lived in Loup City until 1972, when they moved to Osmond. In 1975, they moved to Central City. Mr. Palu died on Nov. 4, 1982.

She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. She enjoyed quilting, listening to Bohemian music, card playing and had been a member of the Senior Citizen's Center Band.

Survivors include four sons, Ted of Central City, Robert of Bloomfield, John of Rock Port, Mo. and Lawrence of Grand Island; one daughter, Jeanette Koperski of Farwell; two sisters, Emily Lonowski of Ord and Wanda Tesmer of Grand Island; 23 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister and two infant grandchildren.

Frank Santin

FULLERTON -- Frank W. Santin, 93, of Fullerton died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at the Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Fullerton. The Rev. Mary McQueen will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Church in Fullerton.

Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton is in charge of arrangements.

Pearl Small

CENTRAL CITY-- Pearl Evangeline Small, 91, of Central City, died Friday, March 3, 2000, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Debra Tompsett-Welch will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Solt Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to Merrick Manor or the Merrick Foundation.

Mrs. Small was born icon June 13, 1908 to John and Amanda (Carlson) Larson in Hordville. She attended the rural Hamilton County School.

She married Harold Benton Small on Feb. 4, 1934 in Merrick County. They farmed on Prairie Island for 27 years. They moved to Central City in 1960 and Mrs. Small worked at the Dairy Queen. They both retired in the mid-1970s and moved to Merrick Manor in 1996. Her husband died on Sept. 13, 1996.

Mrs. Small was a volunteer at Community Care in Central City and at The Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop for many years. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, was awarded the Sertoma Service to Mankind Award and the Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Award.

Survivors include one brother, Clarence Larson of Greeley, Colo.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Leonard, Elmer, and Harold Larson; and one sister, Ruby Larson.

Irene Stenka

ELBA -- Irene M. Stenka, 79, of Elba, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at her home.

There will be no services. After a private family viewing, Mrs. Stenka will be cremated.

Memorials are suggested to family's choice.

Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Stenka was born icon March 26, 1920, on a farm near Loup City to Anton and Agnes (Dembowski) Trompke. She attended Sherman County Rural Schools and lived on the family farm.

She married Louie Stenka on June 1, 1938 at Loup City. The couple farmed in the Loup City area until 1948 when they moved into Loup City. She worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant in Grand Island for the next four years. The couple later moved to Kearney where she operated a day care.

In 1970 the family moved to Elba, where she worked at the Aurora Trailer Factory and later as an assistant cook at Elba Public Schools. Mr. Stenka died March 25, 1985. She continued to live in Elba.

She enjoyed playing cards and watching television.

Survivors include two daughters, Geri (Mrs. Bryce) Pearson of Elba and Cynthia (Mrs. Don) Gay of Grand Island; two sons, Ray of Loveland, Colo. and Mike of Ewing; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister, Velma Larchick of Kearney; and two brothers, Robert Trompke of Wood River and Dick Trompke.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by one son, Virgil and one brother, Raymond.
