John Schnase
KEARNEY -- John H. Schnase, 69, of Kearney, formerly of Loup City, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Loup City. The Rev. Heidi Revelo will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Loup City.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Peters Funeral Home in Loup City.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Schnase was born
on April 20, 1930, at Gering to William and Myrtle (Rogers) Schnase. As a child, he moved with his family to Loup City, where he attended Loup City public schools.
He married Irene Jensen on June 19, 1954, at Ord. He then farmed at Loup City and Weissert. A few years later, he started a tree service and served surrounding towns for the next 18 years.
The couple moved in 1976 to Central City, where he purchased a saw mill. He operated it for about 10 years. He sold the saw mill and went into the logging business with his sons. They moved to Kearney in 1989 and started the Schnase Trailer Court, which he owned and managed until his death.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, building equipment and remodeling his home.
He was a member of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include one son, David of Kearney; two daughters, Sandra Fletcher of Roseland and Michaela Whitefoot of Wolbach; nine grandchildren; six sisters, Myrtle (Mrs. Emil) Kuligowski, Lois (Mrs. Tony) Kuligowski and Winona (Mrs. Ronald) Piontkowski, all of Loup City, Doris (Mrs. Ellsworth) Cleland of Fairmont, Juanita (Mrs. Leonard) Szafrajda of Gibbon and Leona (Mrs. Richard) Kluna of Aurora; and three brothers, Grant of Ansley, Bill of Denton and Carl of Davey.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Saundra Schnase; and one son, Farron Schnase.
Richard Kleve
PASADENA, Texas -- Richard Kleve, 65, of Pasadena, Texas, formerly of Central Nebraska, died Feb. 14, 2000.
Services were on Feb. 17 in Pasadena.
Mr. Kleve was born
on June 6, 1934, in Cedar Rapids to Lawrence and Agatha (Schuele) Kleve. He spent his early years in Cedar Rapids and Central City.
He worked in law enforcement and in several Central Nebraska towns, including Grand Island, before moving to California in the 1980s and later to Texas.
Mr. Kleve is survived by three daughters, Debra, Dianne and Carol Jean; his grandchildren; a special friend, Lucy Lonneberg of Pasadena; three sisters, Joan Craig and Doris Dansley of California and Darren Allen of Oklahoma; and seven brothers, Don and Robert of Texas, Jerome of Nevada, Larry and Danny of California, Carroll of Norfolk and LeRoy of Central City.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles.
Ethel Johnson
BROKEN BOW -- Ethel Waldene Johnson, 70, of Broken Bow died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home.
Memorial graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Broken Bow Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Woodward officiating. Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Johnson was born
on Nov. 10, 1929, at Callaway to Glen and Ethel Rookstool. She attended school at Westerville and graduated in 1948.
She married Bill Teahon in June 1949.
She married Bill Johnson on Dec. 3, 1977. Mrs. Johnson worked as a nurse's aide.
Survivors include one son, Bill of Broken Bow; two daughters, Sandra of Mason City and Vickie of Moncks Corner, S.C.; six grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy (Mrs. Cecil) Creech of Sacramento, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her second husband and a brother.
Lee Journey
KEARNEY -- Lee R. Journey, 72, of Kearney died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney. Capt. Gordon Reed will officiate. Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials will be established by the family.
Mr. Journey was born
on Jan. 16, 1928, in Kearney to Emory and Hazel (League) Journey. He grew up in the Kearney area and attended Kearney public schools. He worked for many years in the Kearney Sanitation Department.
He married Dorothy Payne in 1951.
He married Laveta Wentz on July 23, 1985, in Kearney.
Mr. Journey was a member of the Salvation Army in Kearney and a past member of the Nebraska National Guard. His hobbies included playing bingo, fishing and reading comics.
Survivors include his wife, Laveta; one son, Daniel of Ord; two daughters, Jeanie and Brenda, both of Grand Island; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Albert of Lincoln and Fred, Lawrence and Richard, all of Kearney; and two sisters, Bonnie Fuestman of Kearney and Pat Wampole of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary and one infant sister; and six brothers, Don, Lester, Bob, Victor and two infant brothers.
Leonard Rutten
CEDAR RAPIDS -- Leonard L. Rutten, 68, of Cedar Rapids died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. The Rev. Ralph Steffensmeier will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. wake service, Thursday at Levander Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids.
Harold Sydzyik
ORD -- Harold A. Sydzyik, 80, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at his home north of Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Rev. Jim Warner will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., Thursday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Mary's School Endowment Fund or the church.
Donald Austin
Donald Austin, 58, of Grand Island, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000 at the St. Francis Skilled Care Center in Grand Island.
Funeral Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Greeley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Cynthia Altdstadt officiating.
Burial will be in the Greeley City Cemetery. Visitation is prior to service time Wednesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family.

Theodore Gartner
Theodore "Ted" Casper Gartner, 97, of Grand Island, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000 at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Albion. The Rev. Frank Baumert will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Albion with military rites by American Legion Post 162 and VFW Post 736.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with a wake service at 6:30 p.m. at the Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Mr. Gartner was born
Jan. 16, 1903 at a farm southwest of Albion to Ignatius and Agnes (Redler) Gartner. He attended elementary school at District 42 School in Boone County.
He farmed until 1936 when he moved with his parents to Albion. He worked at the Great Western Sugar Factory in Ovid, Colo., and had other jobs in Nebraska and Iowa.
In 1942, he enlisted in the Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945 after which he returned to Albion and became a carpenter. He also farmed south of Albion.
He married Gertie Saarem on Nov. 16, 1948, in Chicago. The couple lived in Albion. Mrs. Gartner died Jan. 31, 1996.
Mr. Gartner moved into the Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward in 1997. In January 1999, he moved to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Nursing Home unit in Grand Island.
He was a member of the St. Michael's Catholic Church in Albion and served on the Selective Service Board. He was Quarter Master in VFW Post 736 of Albion for 2 years.
He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and refinishing.
Survivors include one daughter, Jane (Mrs. Tom) Goering of Grand Island and three grandchildren.
Other than his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, JoAnn Kratzer; one infant granddaughter; seven brothers, Leo, Frank, Adam and four infant brothers; and two sisters, Mary Flack and Helen Koeppen.
Edith McConnell
Edith B. McConnell, 85, of Grand Island died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000 at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Faith United Methodist Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Richard Urbach officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 9 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Osteoporosis Foundation.
Survivors include two sons, Leon of Lincoln and Kent of Grand Island; one daughter, Diann (Mrs. Joe) Johnston of Kansas City, Mo.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ethel Johnson of Central City and Lucille Nyblom of Aurora.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Elmer Anderson; three sisters, Esther Person, Erma Travis and Lillian May; and one granddaughter.
