Helen Mahoney
SPALDING -- Helen M. Mahoney, 61, died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at the Friendship Villa in Spalding.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding. The Rev. Joe Hannappel will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Spalding.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with rosaries at 4:30 and 7 p.m. at Dolce-Scheef Mortuary in Spalding.
Harold Rasmussen
ST. PAUL -- Harold Rasmussen, 96, of St. Paul died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in St. Paul with the Rev. Larry Lepper officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the Howard County Historical Society or the church.
Mr. Rasmussen was born
on Dec. 7, 1903, near Bennett to Peter and Karen (Olsen) Rasmussen. When he was an infant, his family moved to a farm north of St. Paul. He attended District 42 School north of St. Paul.
He married Veola Dethlefs on March 31, 1934, in Hastings. He farmed until 1948. He then purchased another farm north of the North Loup River and continued to farm until he retired in 1988 and moved to St. Paul.
He entered long-term assisted care at the hospital in 1998.
His hobbies included farming, fishing and playing cards.
He was a charter member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in St. Paul, served on the District 42 school board and the Howard County election board in the Logan precinct. He also was a member of the old St. John's Lutheran Church in Cushing.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Gary of Washington, D.C., Paul of Pendleton, Ore., and Lyle and Alan, both of St. Paul; two daughters, Karen (Mrs. Loren) Siefering of Dillisca, Iowa, and Jean (Mrs. Gordon) Brown of Daytona Beach, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, T.W., Einar, Elvin and an infant brother, Elmer; and four sisters, Christina Jensen, Ella Larson, Lillian McInerney and an infant sister, Agnes.
Frances Whipple
BROKEN BOW -- Frances B. Whipple, 80, of Broken Bow died Friday, April 7, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow. The Revs. Bob Rooney and Mark Maresh will officiate. Burial will be in the Dale Catholic Cemetery.
Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Prairie Pioneer Center.
Mrs. Whipple was born
on Aug. 22, 1919, at Halsey to George LaMoree and Laura Alice (Flory) Besley. She graduated from Halsey High School in 1938. She then attended Kearney State College.
She married Richard McCarty on June 11, 1941, in Anselmo. The couple lived in the Merna area. She started working for the Becton-Dickinson plant in Broken Bow in 1962.
She married Arthur Whipple on Jan. 23, 1970, in Merna. The couple lived in Callaway and moved to Broken Bow in 1975. Mr. Whipple died in October 1981. Mrs. Whipple retired from Becton-Dickinson in 1982 after 20 years of service.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters and the Altar Society. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting and making afghans.
Survivors include four sons, Larry McCarty of Rockford, Ill., Richard McCarty of Merna, Charles McCarty of North Platte and Vic McCarty of Lincoln; two daughters, Joyce (Mrs. Lilburn) Hajny of Danville, Ill., and Laura (Mrs. Bill) Mannel of Anselmo; a stepdaughter, Lora Jean (Mrs. Larry) Julian of Dove Creek, Colo.; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Carol Carter of Raleigh, N.C.
In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Elton and Charles.
Mary Kunzman
LINCOLN -- Mary Renee Kunzman, 38, of Lincoln died Sunday, April 9, 2000.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Lincoln with the Rev. Michael Christensen officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday with a 7 p.m. rosary at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home and one hour before service time Thursday at the funeral home.
Survivors include her husband, Doug; her mother, Lucy Lemen; two brothers-in-law, Steve Kunzman of Grand Island and Matt Faust of Garrett, Ind.; two sisters-in-law, Julie (Mrs. Brian) Rasmussen and Jane (Mrs. Craig) Little of Lincoln; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Tony and Karen Kunzman of Albion.
Phyllis Withers
LINCOLN -- Phyllis N. Withers, 84, of Lincoln, formerly of Grand Island, died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at Tibatha Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island with the Rev. C. Roger Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or the church.
Mrs. Withers was born
on Dec. 28, 1915, in Barada to Harry and Effie (Ankrom) Withers. At a young age, she moved to Hubbell, then back to Barada and then to Stella, where she graduated from high school in 1934.
She married Jess Withers on Sept. 19, 1936, in Auburn.
While living in Grand Island, Mrs. Withers was involved in the Foster Grandparents Program at Newell Elementary School and was a volunteer at St. Francis Medical Center.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry Withers of Cheyenne, Wyo., and John Withers of Grand Island; two daughters, Karen Oliver of Lincoln and Janet Stone of Waverly; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Harriett Padgett-Lutz of Columbia, Mo.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Nelson, Keith and Loy.
Lyle Woods
Lyle E. Woods, 77, of Grand Island, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. John Russell will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Monday with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Kleine Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Family Life Center at St. Pauls Lutheran Church or at the donor's choice.
Mr. Woods was born
March 1, 1923, in Fullerton to Volentine and Matilda (McCloud) Woods. He received his education in Fullerton, graduating from Fullerton High School in 1941.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp. and served from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. After that he attended the University of Nebraska Agriculture College.
He married Norma Jean McMullen on August 18, 1946, in Grand Island. The family lived near Grand Island and later farmed near Oakland and Wood River. He worked for a number of years as a mechanic at Doniphan Implement and Grosshans in Aurora. He retired in 1985 after 19 years as a machinist with the Union Pacific Railroad in Grand Island.
He was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers and the Platte Duetsche Society.
He enjoyed western books, sports and repairing things.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, David of Grand Island, Scott of Grand Island and Steven of Omaha; four grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd and Leonard; and one sister, Lela.
Sandra Billings
ANSLEY -- Sandra Billings, 55, of Ansley, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Fundamental Baptist Church in Ansley. The Rev. Mark Joedeman will officiate. Burial will be in Ansley Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the family. Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Billings was born
Feb. 13, 1945, in Mason City, Iowa, to Orville and Cleatus (Hedrick) Chaney. She attended school in Rockford, Iowa.
She married Dale Billings on August 17, 1970, in Mason City, Iowa. The couple lived in Ainsworth for many years before moving to Kearney and later to Ansley.
She was a member of the Fundamental Baptist Church in Ansley.
Survivors include one son, Michael Billings of Broken Bow.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers and one infant son, Jeff.
Edd McCain
Edd McCain, 74, of Burwell, died Friday, April 7, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Burwell. The Rev. Mark Middendorf will officiate. Burial will be in the Bartlett City Cemetery in Bartlett.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. McCain was born
on Aug. 15, 1925, west of Bartlett to Ralph and Bessie (Alexander) McCain. He was the seventh son of the couple.
He attended school at Gritta Ridge before entering the Army in 1943. He was honorably discharged in December of 1946 and received the Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern World War II Victory Medal and the Occupationist Medal of Germany.
After returning home, Edd farmed with his father.
He married Leola Mae Benly on March 20, 1948, in Vermillion, S.D. In 1956, he was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ord.
He owned and operated a service station in Grand Island and a Thriftway Grocery Store in Bartlett. He, however, spent most of his life farming in Texas and Nebraska, moving to the Gracie Creek Ranch near Burwell in 1981 before retiring in 1987.
After retirement, Mr. McCain continued to help out with farming.
He was a life member of the VFW and a member of the American Legion serving as commander of the VFW in the 1980s. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Eddie of Grand Island, Rocky of Salt Lake City, Utah, Lannie of Alliance and Lennie of Coolridge, Ariz.; two daughters, Cheryl (Mrs. Steve) Conner of Rose and Kimberly (Mrs. J.W.) Wagner of Burwell; four brothers, Wayne of Greeley, Willard of Seattle, Wash., Earl of Aurora and Flash of Norfolk; four sisters, Ruth Lanker of Phillipsburg, Kan., Veda (Mrs. Ray) Wibbels of Grand Island, Jenny Wildman of Burwell and Tiny Foster of Bassett; 21 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lon, Ralph and Vern; one son, David; and one grandson, Jeremy.
