George Fieldgrove
George W. Fieldgrove, 32, of 119 W. Ninth died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Omaha.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Jerry Quandt will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday in the Ravenna Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Fieldgrove was born
on May 30, 1967, at Grand Island to John Jr. and Louise (Modesitt) Fieldgrove. He graduated from Centura High School in Cairo in 1985. He entered the U.S. Army and served at the Pentagon as secretary to the chief of staff of the U.S. Army until his discharge in March 1990.
He returned to Grand Island and was employed in the Parris Trucking Co. office at the time of his death. He had been in failing health for the past year.
Survivors include his parents, of Litchfield; five brothers, James of Colorado Springs, Colo., Dick of Central City, Charles of Litchfield and Thomas and Johnny, both of Grand Island; four sisters, Helen Louise Fieldgrove of Ord, Connie Jo Nolte of Oakley, Kan., Doris Fieldgrove of Grand Island and Beverly Slagle of Shelton.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne LeRoy Fieldgrove and Amos Fieldgrove; and his grandparents.
Helen Stelk
Helen B. Stelk, 76, of Grand Island, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at the St. Francis Memorial Health Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island. The Rev. C. Roger Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday with family receiving friends from 3-4 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or to Stephen Ministry at the First Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Stelk was born
on April 15, 1923, to Robert and Blanche (Green) Kelly in Grand Island. She graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1941. She was employed at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. until 1944 and in San Francisco as a PBX operator and time keeper at Brodie Plumbing Company until 1946. She returned to Grand Island and was employed at NorthWestern Bell Telephone Company until 1949.
She married Donald Stelk in Grand Island on Sept. 1, 1947. She returned to work at the Veterans Hospital in 1956 where she worked as a nurses aide until her retirement in 1979.
She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving in Stephen Ministry and as a deacon. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the YWCA and the New Book Club. She volunteered at Saint Francis Medical Center.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Mark of Grand Island, Barry of Lincoln and Warren of Blue Springs, Mo.; two daughters, Marilynn (Mrs. Don) Grieb of Shawnee, Kan., and Lucille Weber of Grand Island; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Ethel (Mrs. Russell) Faupel of Fayetteville, Ark.; and one brother, Donald Kelly of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Bruce, John and Richard Kelly; and one sister, Marguerite Lindgren.
Lavern Ahrens
KEARNEY -- Lavern G. Ahrens, 65, of Kearney died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. The Revs. James Golka and Tom Ryan will officiate. Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery with military honors at the graveside conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 759 and the National Guard Unit of Kearney.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., with a prayer vigil at 7 p.m., Sunday at the church.
O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Ahrens was born
on April 1, 1934, in Shelton to George and Elsie (Ohlmann) Ahrens. He grew up in the Shelton and Kearney areas and graduated from Kearney High School. He entered the U.S. Army in 1954, served in the Korean War and was discharged in December 1956.
He married LaDonna Erpelding in 1956 in Kansas City, Mo. They lived in Texas, Kansas City and Kearney. He was employed by Cash-Wa. He owned and operated the Riverside Mobile Home Park until retiring in 1997 because of ill health.
He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Kirk of Kearney; two daughters, Kimbra (Mrs. Ronny) Roberts and Kristin Ahrens, both of Kearney; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, Orville Ahrens of Tennessee and Roger Ahrens of Kearney; and two sisters, Loretta Hadlock of Gibbon and Mae Truesdale of North Kansas City, Mo.
Dorothy Brown
AURORA -- Dorothy I. Brown, 80, of Aurora, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings. The Rev. Denny Silk will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in the Hillside Cemetery in Wolbach.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Memorials are suggested to the Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings or the Nebraska Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Ms. Brown was born
in Columbus on Jan. 25, 1920, to Charles and Betty (Bower) Hurst. The family moved to the Wolbach area in 1929. She graduated from Wolbach High School.
She married Delmer T. Silk on April 4, 1938. They farmed east of Wolbach until her husband's illness forced them to move into Wolbach. During this time Mrs. Brown commuted to Hastings College and also taught school in rural Howard County.
The family moved to Hastings, where Delmer died in November of 1956.
She married Lloyd C. Brown in January 1959. The couple lived in Hastings.
She received her bachelors degree from Hastings College in 1960 and her masters degree from University of Nebraska in 1970. She taught in the Hastings Public Schools until ill health forced her retirement in 1972.
Mr. Brown died in June 1982. She moved to the Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island where she lived for 12 years. For the past six years she lived at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Mrs. Brown was a long-time adult Sunday school teacher at Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty (Mrs. C.J.) Marr of Doniphan and DeEtte (Mrs. Michael) Brasfield of Aurora; two sons, Monte Silk of Bullhead City, Ariz. and Denny Silk of Springfield; one stepdaughter, Barbara Ericksen of Hobbs, N.M.; three stepsons, Ronald Brown of San Antonio, Texas, Wendell Brown of Newport Beach, Calif. and Darrell Brown of Lincoln; two sisters, Evelyn (Mrs. Bernard) McIntyre of Wolbach and Doris Finney of Portland, Ore.; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
In addition to her two husbands she was preceded in death by infant twin sisters, Stella and Della.
Arleen Cosner
GIBBON -- Arleen R. Cosner, 74, of Gibbon, formerly of Shelton, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at the Gibbon Good Samaritan Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River. The Rev. Richard Maciejewski will officiate. Burial will be at the Shelton Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the Gibbon Good Samaritan Center.
Miss Cosner was born
April 23, 1925, to Archie and Pearl (Barger) Cosner at Shelton. She grew up in Shelton and graduated from Shelton High School. After high school, she graduated from the School of Cosmetology in Omaha.
After graduation, she returned to Shelton where she owned and ran her own beauty shop from 1951 to 1985 when she retired. She moved into Good Samaritan Center in 1990.
She was a member of Rebekah's Lodge and the VFW Auxiliary.
Survivors include one brother, Loyal, of Shelton.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Mervin and one sister, Donna Jarvis.
Thelma Daake
KEARNEY -- Thelma C. Daake, 80, of Kearney died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Overton Cemetery. The Rev. Dean Pofahl will officiate.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Daake was born
on March 15, 1919, in Miller to August and Nellie (Mauler) Carman. She attended District 55 School in Buffalo County.
She married Carl Daake on Nov. 15, 1939, in Smith Center, Kan. They lived in Riverdale. They farmed in the Riverdale and Amherst area until moving to Overton in 1960. Mrs. Daake worked for 20 years for the Plectron Co. in Overton before moving to Kearney in 1992.
She enjoyed gardening, playing cards, sewing, bingo, fishing and making butterflies.
Survivors include one son, August of Lexington; four daughters, Donna (Mrs. Kenny) Beck of Kearney, Karla (Mrs. Richard) Shafer of Gibbon, Deborah Obermiller of Grand Island and Kris (Mrs. Pat) Sims of Lexington; nine grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one stepgrandson; one infant brother; one sister; and a special friend, Pat Fellows.
Ralph Franzen
ARCADIA -- Ralph Dick Franzen, 88, of Arcadia died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Community Memorial Nursing Home in Burwell.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Ord Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Gerald Roggow will officiate. Burial will be in the Arcadia City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Clara Hogg
SHELTON -- Clara A. Hogg, 93, of Shelton died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at the Homestead Residence in Kearney.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon. The Rev. Charles Spence will officiate. Burial will be in the Shelton Cemetery.
The casket will be open for viewing prior to services Monday.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Hogg was born
on April 1, 1906, on a farm north of Shelton to Henry and Lena (Keechler) Pope. She grew up there, attended rural school and graduated from Shelton High School in 1925. She attended Kearney Normal School, now the University of Nebraska at Kearney, and earned her teaching degree. She taught rural school north of Shelton for four years.
She married Floyd Hogg on March 4, 1931, in Grand Island. They lived on a farm north of Shelton before moving into town in 1982.
She was a member of the Buffalo County Extension Club for more than 50 years.
Survivors include her husband and one daughter, Beth Fox of Kearney.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
