Dr. Nyel Moss

ARCADIA -- Dr. Nyel Harold Moss, 77, of Arcadia died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at his home.

Dr. Moss was cremated.

Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Gathering Place in Arcadia.

Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Moss was born icon on Nov. 1, 1922, at Lincoln to Harold John and Anna (Nye) Moss. He was raised in the Lincoln and Ashland area and attended a one-room school until the eighth grade. He graduated from Bethany High School in 1940. He then attended AG College while working for the railroad.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in the Rainbow Division until 1945. He returned to Lincoln and graduated from the University of Nebraska, majoring in pre-med. He completed his education at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha and did his residency at Emmanuel Hospital. After graduation, he worked at a general practice in Sutherland for six months.

He married Janice Stickels in 1951. He opened the Arcadia Medical Clinic in 1952 and operated it until 1962. He advanced his education in Minnesota, specializing in anesthesiology. For more than two years, he worked for the Veterans Administration in Minneapolis and then for the anesthesiology department at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, Minn., until 1980. In 1980, he returned to Arcadia, where he lived until his death with his wife of 22 years, Yvone "Henny" Moss.

He was a member of the American Medical Association.

He enjoyed photography, trains, music and nature.

Survivors include his wife; one son, John Nyel Moss of Minneapolis; two daughters, Laurel Feffer of Maplewood, Minn., and Kay Glover of Annandale, Minn.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his former wife, Janice Moss.

John Schnase

KEARNEY -- John H. Schnase, 69, of Kearney, formerly of Loup City, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Loup City. The Rev. Heidi Revelo will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Loup City.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Peters Funeral Home in Loup City.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Survivors include his wife; one son, David of Kearney; two daughters, Sandra Fletcher of Roseland and Michaela Whitefoot of Wolbach; nine grandchildren; six sisters, Myrtle (Mrs. Emil) Kuligowski, Lois (Mrs. Tony) Kuligowski and Winona (Mrs. Ronald) Piontkowski, all of Loup City, Doris (Mrs. Ellsworth) Cleland of Fairmont, Juanita (Mrs. Leonard) Szafrajda of Gibbon and Leona (Mrs. Richard) Kluna of Aurora; and three brothers, Grant of Ansley, Bill of Denton and Carl of Davey.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Saundra Schnase; and one son, Farron Schnase.

Beverly Thomas

KEARNEY -- Beverly J. Thomas, 65, of the Good Samaritan Center in Gibbon and formerly of Kearney died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at the center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at O'Brien-Straatman-Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney. The Rev. John Gosswein will officiate. Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and before services Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Thomas was born icon on March 23, 1934, at Kearney to Charles and Lydia (DeVall) Nelson. She attended the School for the Deaf between 1945 and 1948. She then attended Kearney public schools. She also attended Kearney State College.

She married Lynn Thomas on June 7, 1952. She worked as a nurse's aide, special education teacher's aide and also did janitorial work at the Kearney Hilltop Mall.

She was a member of the Family of Christ Lutheran Church in Kearney. She was an interpreter for the deaf and a member of the State Commission for the Deaf. She was a seamstress and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include two daughters, Lynda Frye and LeAnn McNew of Kearney; two sons, Michael Thomas of Gibbon and Richard "Dick" Thomas of Kearney; seven grandchildren; four brothers, Don Jarmin of Raleigh, N.C., Gary Jarmin of Kearney, Dennis Jarmin of Wilsonville and Randy Jarmin of Gibbon; and five sisters, Karen Kaiser of Grand Island, Diann Carbaugh of Fallon, Nev., Cheryl Johnson of Salt Lake City, Becky Nelson of Denver and Connie Payne of Draper, Utah.

Robert Young

RAVENNA -- Robert D. Young, 80, of Ravenna, formerly of Ansley, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Ansley. The Rev. Sandy Carpenter will officiate. Burial will be in the Ansley Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow and from 4 to 7 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Ansley.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Young was born icon Dec. 22, 1919, to Vernon and Goldie (Nelson) Young at Stromsburg. When he was young, the family moved to Versailles, Ohio. They returned to Nebraska in 1923. He attended grade school at Round Grove, near Litchfield, and finished his education at Ansley Public School in 1937. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps where he worked in the Halsey Forest for two years. After his discharge, he went to work for the Burlington Northern Railroad.

He married Elayne Sigler on Oct. 18, 1942, at her parents' farm near Hazard. He worked for the railroad for 40 years before retiring in 1980. After living in Ansley for 47 years, the couple moved to Ravenna in 1990.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ansley, the Eagles Club of Kearney and the Retired Railroaders Association at Ravenna.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Barry of Winona, Minn.; one sister, Dorothy Lewis of Omaha; two grandsons and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Chuck and Chauncey.

Evelyn Babcock

BEAVER CITY -- Evelyn Louise Babcock, 78, of Beaver City, formerly of Aurora, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000.

Services were on Thursday at Enfield Funeral Home in Norton, Kan. The Rev. Charles Ross officiated. Burial was in the Norton Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Beaver City Ambulance Fund.

Mrs. Babcock was born icon on June 28, 1921, at Aurora to George F. and Blanch Andrews. She grew up in the Aurora area and attended area schools.

She married Dale Ervin Babcock on Nov. 21, 1939, at New Castle, Wyo. They lived in Lincoln, Auburn, Sidney and Scottsbluff while he served in the Nebraska State Patrol. They moved to a farm northwest of Norton, Kan., in 1946 and to a farm home southwest of Beaver City in 1950. Mr. Babcock died on March 11, 1994.

Mrs. Babcock served as Mr. Babcock's matron for four years while he was sheriff of Furnas County. She had an extensive collection of early state trooper memorabilia. She enjoyed her family, living on the farm, taking care of the cattle and being outdoors.

Survivors include three sons, Roger Babcock of Klamath Falls, Ore., Kenny Babcock of Hickman and Phillip Babcock of Norton, Kan.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Bobbie Andrews; and one sister, Thelma Umbenhower of Hastings.

Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Charles; one sister, Leora Watson; and one brother, Lawrence Andrews.

Angelo Cimino

Angelo J. Cimino Jr., 51, of Omaha, formerly of Grand Island, died Thursday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. Donald Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Kleine Funeral Home with a rosary at 7 p.m.

Frank Janssen

KENESAW -- Frank H. Janssen, 84, of Haven Home in Kenesaw, formerly of Glenvil, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at Haven Home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church west of Glenvil. The Revs. Les and Bonnie Larsen will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Churchyard and Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday; from 1 to 9 p.m., with the family present from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday; and from 9 a.m. to noon Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Mr. Janssen was born icon on Oct. 19, 1915, in Brickton to Everet and Dora (Ziems) Janssen. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from April 4, 1942, to April 19, 1944. He served in the European theater, was a prisoner of war and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He married Berniece Hollister in 1946 in Kansas. They later divorced. He graduated from vocational-technical school in Milford as a machinist. He was a cook at the Hastings Regional Center and lived in Glenvil for 25 years before moving to Haven Home in 1997.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Glenvil and the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Hastings.

Survivors include four sons, David Janssen of Cairo, Wes Janssen of Loveland, Colo., Wendell Janssen of Fort Collins, Colo., and Dale Janssen of Norfolk, Va.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Marie Green of Hastings.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Carl.

Lawrence Hammerschmidt

HAYS, Kan. -- Lawrence F. Hammerschmidt, 86, of Hays, Kan., died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at the Hays Medical Center, St. Anthony's Campus.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. Michael Suchnicki will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays.

A Perpetual Adorers rosary will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 8 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the church or Hospice of Hays Medical Center.

Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hammerschmidt was born icon Oct. 26, 1913, to Jacob and Anna (Bieker) Hammerschmidt at Walker, Kan.

He married Rose Haas on Nov. 21, 1938, at Antonino, Kan. He worked in the oil fields from 1939 to 1945. He then was an electrician for Midwest Energy from 1945 until 1975. He also was a maintenance man at Kennedy Middle School.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he was a Eucharistic Minister, the Holy Name Society and the Perpetual Eucharistic Adorers.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Harold F. of Littleton, Colo., and James of Baton Rouge, La.; five daughters, Rose Mary Staab of Grand Island, Pauline A. Deges of Salina, Kan., Jeanette Grist of Andover, Kan., Karen Davis of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Darlene Poe of Houston, Texas; one brother, Herman of Russell, Kan.; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Marlene on April 24, 1960; one granddaughter; four brothers, Wendelyn, Otto, Anselm and Tura and three sisters, Mary, Philomena and Caroline.

Dennis Killham

WARRENVILLE, Ill. -- Dennis L. Killham, 45, of Warrenville, Ill., formerly of Central City, died suddenly Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000.

Prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Williams-Kampp Funeral Home in Wheaton, Ill. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Irene Church in Warrenville. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery.

Mr. Killham was born icon Feb. 22, 1955, and was raised in Central City. He lived in Warrenville for five years.

Survivors include his wife, Cathy; one daughter, Regan (Mrs. Adam) Wilks of Virginia; his mother, Margaret Killham of Central City; two brothers, Richard of Cookeville, Tenn., and Dan of Lincoln; and one sister, Kathy (Mrs. Randy) Wegner of Archer.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Killham.
