Robert Alden Leroy Johnson, 78

(June 12) ALLIANCE - Robert Alden Leroy Johnson, 78, died Friday, June 9, at Highland Park Care Center.

He was born Sept. 4, 1921, a Chisago City, Minn., the son of Arthur E.T. and Anna K. (Erickson) Johnson.

He graduated from Chisago City High School in 1939. He spent three years in the Civilian Conservation Corp. He was drafted in September of 1942, and served in the U.S. Army in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theatre until the end of war, December of 1945.

He then graduated from St. Cloud State College, St. Cloud, Minn. He retired from the Internal Revenue Service after 30 years. He worked as an accountant until his death.

In 1945 he married Elaine Parker n Hot Springs, S.D. and resided in Alliance.

Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother, Vernon of Chisago City, and Minn., a sister Florence Cooper in Kirkland, Wash.

His survivors include his wife, Elaine; son and his wife, Lerick and Cheryl, and Michael and his wife Kristy, all of Alliance; sisters, May Brinkeroff and her husband Charles of Pasco, Wash., LaVern Weir of Pasco, Wash.; brothers, Allan and his wife Marilyn Joyce Johnson of Foley, Ala., Norman and his wife, Marie of Shafer, Minn., Gordon and his wife Joy Johnson of Oregon City, Ore.; and five grandchildren, Dereck, Carley, David, Samantha and Ashley.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 13, at 2 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel. The Rev. Walter Cline officiating.

Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery at Sturgis, S.D. on Wednesday, June 14, at 11 a.m.

Memorials may be given to the Carnegie Arts Center.

Russell L. Maunier, 76

(June 10) DENVER, Colo. - Russell L. Maunier, 76, died Wednesday, June 7, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Denver, Colo.

He was born Jan. 24, 1924, to William and Bessie (Weaver) Maunier in Lincoln.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

His survivors include his wife, Connie Maunier of Arvada, Colo., one son, Paul Maunier of Westminister, Colo.; step-son, George Griffiths and step-daughter, Ann Del Nigro.

Visitation will be at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 13.

Graveside services will be Tuesday, June 13, at 11:30 a.m. at the Alliance Cemetery. Reverend Mark Schutt will officiate.

Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.

William J. Rischling, 70

(June 10) William J. Rischling died Friday, June 9 at Box Butte General Hospital. He was 70 years old.

He was born December 31, 1929 to William Frank and Theodora Marie (Willy) Rischling in Hebron, Nebraska.

He married Maralee Wickiser on August 25, 1950 in Falls City, Nebraska. She survives at the home.

He had been a longtime music instructor teaching from 1947 until his retirement in 1993. He recently came out of retirement to teach music at the Chadron Public Schools during the 1999-2000 school year.

He was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

His survivor,s include his children and their spouses, Dick and Gretchen Rischling, David and Shawna Rischling, all of Alliance, Nebraska, Joseph and Linda Rischling of Bayard, Nebraska, Mary and Richard Fulkerson of Littleton, Colorado, Anne and Mike Moody of Wakefield, Nebraska, Margaret and Todd Peterson of Torrington, Wyoming, Jane and Pat Stutzman of Las Vegas, Nevada, Cecilia and Mike Higgins of Reno, Nevada, Rose and Dennis Hengen of Bird City, Kansas, Christine and Randy Dickerson of Chadron, Nebraska, Jean and Brian Gatzemeyer of Elkhart, Indiana, and Susan Rischling of Alexandria, Virginia. Forty-two grandchildren also survive him. His parents, an infant daughter, and one brother, Richard, preceded him in death.

A wake service will be Sunday, June 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Funeral services will be Monday, June 12 at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Father Tim Stoner will officiate. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Alliance High School Foundation in care of the Music Department or to the church. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

William J. Scheve Sr., 84

(August 21) BEATRICE - William J. Scheve Sr., 84, died Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Beatrice Community Hospital.

He was born on March 20, 1916, at rural Beatrice. His parents were Joseph H. and Mary A. Wollenburg Scheve.

He was baptized on April 9, 1916, at the First Trinity Lutheran Church and was confirmed on March 24, 1929.

He graduated from Beatrice High School in 1933 and began farming.

On Feb. 1, 1942, he married Hilda E. Falkenroth at the First Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Beatrice. They lived and farmed west of Beatrice all of their married life.

He was a life-long member of the First Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served as the congregation president, church treasurer and church elder. He was on the school board and belonged to various other church organizations. He was the director for the Beatrice National Bank for 38 years, president of the Farmer's Union Elevator Board and the Farmer's Union Oil Station. He was on the Beatrice Cemetery Board and was a 4-H leader for the Cub Creek Feeders.

His survivors include his wife, Hilda Scheve of Beatrice; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and Larry Ring of Alliance and Susan and Arden Miller of Lodgepole; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Sallie Scheve of York, Richard and Mary Scheve of Beatrice and Lloyd and Jeanne Scheve of Blair; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Alvin Scheve and his wife Addie of Norfolk; two sisters-in-law, Hilda Scheve of Mesa, Ariz. and Pauline Scheve of Lawrence, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Beatrice with Pastor Mark Rockenbach and Pastor Douglas Irmer officiating.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Home Cemetery.

A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday morning in the basement of the church.

A memorial has been established to the First trinity Lutheran Church and the Alzheimer's Association with Leonard Burger and Dale Meyer in charge.

Virgil "Vergie" L. Carnahan, 76

(August 19) RAPID CITY, S.D. - Virgil "Vergie" Carnahan, 76, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, at her home.

She was May 28, 1924, in Wheatland, Wyo. Her parents were Howard (Ben) H. and Virgil Josephine (Allen) Moss.

She was a member of the Chadron BPO Does Drove No. 2.

Her survivors include her son, Morie Carnahan of Chadron; two daughters, Cherlynn Young and Janie Norlin, both of Bell Fourche, S.D.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She is also survived by sister, Jeri Berg of Wheatland, Wyo. and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at the United Methodist Church in Crawford with the Rev. Tim Pratt and the Rev. K.F. Kaleuati officiating.

Burial will be in the Crawford Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Crawford Alumni banquet Association, Chadron BPO Does Drove No. 2 or the United Methodist Church in Crawford. Donations may be sent to the Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. 970, Chadron, NE 69337.

Andrew Petersen, 83

(August 18) GORDON - Andrew Petersen, 83, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the Gordon Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Oct. 20, 1916, in Cherry County. His parents were Nels and Carrie (Anderson) Petersen.

He married Bernice Hare on May 9, 1944, at Rushville.

He was a lifelong resident of the area.

Andy had ranched south of Gordon for over 50 years. He was a self-taught musician who enjoyed playing for dances.

His survivors include his wife, Bernice of Gordon; two daughters, Carman Petersen and Carol Brakeman, both of Denver; two grandchildren; and a sister, Inga Semans of Gordon.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at the Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Chapel in Gordon, with the Rev. Tom Dykes officiating. Inurnment will be in the Gordon Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the donor's choice.

Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Leone M. Atchison, 83

(August 15) HARRISON - Leone M. Atchison, 83, died Monday, Aug. 14, at the Ponderosa Villa in Crawford.

She was born on Dec. 18, 1916, in Falls City. Her parents were Herbert A. and Emma M. (McCann) Burk.

She was married to George R. Atchison on Jan. 21, 1936, in Hot Springs, S.D.

Her survivors include her two sons, Paul R. Atchison of Norfolk, Va. and Darrel L. Atchison of Atwood, Kans.; one daughter, Loretta Wilkins of Lusk, Wyo.; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the Memorial United Methodist with the Rev. Henrietta Stemley officiating.

Burial will be at the Harrison Cemetery.

Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of the arrangements.

Dennis L. Strumpler, 53

(August 15) ALLIANCE - Dennis L. Strumpler, 53, died Saturday, Aug. 12, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.

He was born Aug. 31, 1946, to Henry and Arlene (Knispel) Struempler at Lexington.

He was baptized at Buffalo Lutheran Church and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Broken Bow.

Dennis graduated from Ansley High School in 1964, and served in the U.S. Army for two years.

He married Kathy Patterson and two sons were born to this union.

He worked in the irrigation well business for years, including Sargent Irrigation, Layne Western, Grosch irrigation and at the time of his death he was employed for Rasmussen Irrigation in Alliance.

Dennis enjoyed the sport of rodeo.

His survivors include his two sons, Scott Struempler of Gering and Erik Struempler of Kimball; one grandson; parents of Berwyn; three sisters, Sheryl Taylor, Debra Rapp and Lana Lymber, all of Broken Bow; grandmother, Clara Knispel of Lexington and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant nephew, Galen Rapp; and grandparents, Fritz Sr. and Minnie Struempler and William Knispel.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Central Time Thursday, Aug. 17, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Robert Strawn officiating.

Private burial will be in the Christ Lutheran Cemetery southwest of Oconto. Friends and family may sign a register book at Govier Brothers Mortuary from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Lewis H. Roberts, 68

(Oct. 12) CEDAR CITY, Utah - Lewis Howell Roberts, 68, died Thursday, Oct. 5. He was born March 5, 1932, at Wellfleet, Neb. His parents were Lewis Howell Sr. and Elodia (DeVries) Roberts. He married Ardella Sellmer on June 4, 1955, at Bridgeport.

He was a truck driver for the Keebler Company, retiring in 1995. He was a member of VFW Post No. 9332. He is survived by his wife, Ardella Roberts, of Westminster, Colo; daughter Sheryl Weber of Arvada, Colo.; son Mark Roberts of Arvada, Colo; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. His sisters also survive him, Nelta Herbert of Denver and Jean Lossi of Fort Collins, Colo.

Mr. Roberts' funeral was Monday, Oct. 9, at Rundus Funeral Home, Broomfield, Colo.
