JoAnn "Jo" Sweenie

BROKEN BOW -- JoAnn "Jo" Sweenie, 66, of Broken Bow died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow. The Rev. Cliff Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be in the Springfield Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the United Methodist Church music fund.

There will be no visitation.

Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Sweenie was born icon March 2, 1933, to John and Anna K. (Schuette) Rogge at Johnson. She grew up at Johnson and graduated from Johnson High School in 1950. She also attended Peru State College.

She married John L. Sweenie in 1953 at Johnson. They lived in Polk where Mr. Sweenie taught school. In 1954, they moved to Broken Bow where Mr. Sweenie taught school and she worked at a bank. She later worked as a bookkeeper at District 25 School.

In 1985, she suffered a stroke. She was able to be at home with the help of family and friends until July 1999, when she became a resident of Heritage Hall Nursing Home.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed music and played the organ for the United Methodist Church choir for many years. She enjoyed playing bridge and working with numbers and bookkeeping.

Survivors include her husband; one son, John C. Sweenie of Brush, Colo.; one daughter, Ann (Mrs. Jack) VerLinden of Greeley, Colo.; one granddaughter; her mother of Auburn; and one sister, Margaret Remmers of Lincoln.

Lila Newbrough

SUPERIOR, Mont. -- Lila M. (Hesselgesser-Maxon) Newbrough, 93, of Superior, Mont., formerly of Burwell, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, in Superior, Mont.

Services are pending with Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.

Helen Oberschulte

Helen S. Oberschulte, 93, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Daniel Bremer will officiate. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery at Worms.

Visitation will be at Kleine Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Survivors include one son, Melvin Oberschulte of Grand Island; two daughters, Lorraine Schleichardt and Marlene (Mrs. Leslie) Stark, both of Grand Island; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by one daughter, Evelyn; one grandchild; two brothers, Otto and Ernest; one sister, Emma; and her stepfather, Fred.

Robert "Bob" Schleichardt Sr.

Robert "Bob" Schleichardt Sr., 64, of Grand Island died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center of Grand Island.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Rob Inge will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Schleichardt was born icon Dec. 30, 1935, to Edward and Ethel (Meyers) Schleichardt at Grand Island. He received his education and grew to manhood at Grand Island.

Hew married Betty Ann Rawlings on Feb. 25, 1956, at York. The couple lived in Grand Island where he was employed by Diamond Engineering, Redmans Mobile Home and later owned and operated R&S Roofing. Mrs. Schleichardt died Jan. 18, 1997.

He enjoyed fishing, stock car racing, trapping and hunting.

Survivors include two daughters, Connie (Mrs. David) Johnson and Patricia (Mrs. Craig) Akerly of Grand Island; one son, Robert W. Schleichardt Jr. of Grand Island; four grandsons; three brothers, Gene Schleichardt of Chapman, Bill Schleichardt of Schuyler and Gary Schleichardt of Aurora; and three sisters, Betty (Mrs. Everett) Wiley of Grand Island, Shirley (Mrs. Leonard) Boguslaw of Cairo and Sandy (Mrs. Bob) Schoenstein of Grand Island.

In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by an infant son, Kenneth; an infant daughter, Carolyn; a brother, Ron; a sister, Delores Grotzky; and a grandson.

Larry Heaps

CAIRO -- Larry D. Heaps, 55, of Cairo died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Bev Minor will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Heaps was born icon on Sept. 14, 1944, at Broken Bow to Donald and Lillie (Govier) Heaps. He grew up and attended school in Broken Bow.

He served in the U.S. Navy from May 22, 1962, until Feb. 19, 1965. He then continued serving in the Naval Reserve until Feb. 27, 1968.

He married Marlene Rutten on Oct. 20, 1967, in Grand Island. They lived in Grand Island, and Mr. Heaps worked on various construction jobs. They lived in Wood River from 1977 to 1993 and had lived near Cairo since 1993. At the time of his death, Mr. Heaps was employed by Leon Plastics in Alda.

He enjoyed fishing and watching football, boxing and NASCAR racing.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1347 in Grand Island.

Survivors include his wife; one son, James D. Heaps of Wolbach; one daughter, Michelle A. Wengler of Augusta, Ark.; four grandchildren; his mother, of Smyrna, Tenn.; and two brothers, Don Heaps of Lincoln and Charles "Dick" Heaps of Smyrna, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his father and an infant brother.

Harold 'Coppy' Jones

GIBBON -- Harold E. "Coppy" Jones, 64, of Gibbon died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon is in charge of the arrangements.

Vivian Linder

ALBION -- Vivian I. Linder, 91, of Albion died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion. The Rev. Timothy Stahl will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Albion.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Elmer Obermeier

AURORA -- Elmer Carl Obermeier, 73, of Aurora died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Al Duminy officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Aurora. Higby Mortuary in Aurora is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Obermeier was born icon on April 26, 1926, in Hamilton County to Henry and Ida (Sundermeier) Obermeier. He grew up near Giltner, where he graduated from high school, and farmed with his parents.

He served in the U.S. Army from Dec. 18, 1944, to Nov. 21, 1946, in the Philippines and Japan. Following his discharge, he returned to the farm near Giltner.

He married Lois Mohr on Sept. 26, 1948, at Grand Island. They moved to Aurora in 1964. He worked for the Farmers Union and Bob Hope Furniture. They operated Obermeier's Inc. from 1975 to 1986. He worked for Da-Ly Realty in Grand Island until June 1988, when he was appointed Hamilton County treasurer. He served until he retired in December 1994.

Mr. Obermeier had been a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island. At the time of his death, he was a member of Messiah Lutheran in Aurora and had served on the church board.

He participated in 4-H as a child. He was a member of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce, Aurora American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars; Keystone Masonic Lodge in Phillips; Hastings Shrine; Platt-Duetsche Society, Liederkranz and Saddle Club, all in Grand Island; and Lions Club.

He enjoyed fishing, bowling, golfing and ballroom dancing.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Craig of Vine Grove, Ky., and Glenn of Aurora; one daughter, Terrie (Mrs. Jim) Urban of Emerson, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; three brothers, Clarence of Grand Island, Dale of Aurora and Henry of North Platte; and one sister, Marie Stoltenberg of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Paul.

Grace Kinsman

DAVID CITY -- Grace Kinsman, 82, of David City died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at David Place at David City.

Services were Tuesday at Roberts Funeral Home in David City. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in David City.

Survivors include five children, Donna Raymond of Illinois, David Kinsman of Stockton, Calif., Randy Kinsman of Foley, Ala., Linda Painter of Grand Island and Julia Tyler of Abilene, Kan.; and 14 grandchildren.

Vernon Pearson

COLUMBUS -- Vernon V. Pearson, 81, of Columbus died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Columbus Community Hospital.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Columbus. The Rev. Tom Washington will officiate. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in West Hill Cemetery in rural Genoa.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Gass-Haney Funeral Home and from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the church. A family prayer service will be at 1:15 p.m. Saturday at the church with military honors provided by the Hartman American Legion Post 84 Honor Guard.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Mr. Pearson was born icon on July 21, 1918, at rural Genoa to Clarence and Anna (Thomazin) Pearson. He graduated from Genoa High School in 1936. He served in the Army Air Force from April 2, 1942, to Nov. 6, 1945. He flew radar missions out of San Francisco as a flight engineer.

He married Rachel Boettcher on Feb. 26, 1942, in Newman Grove. The couple farmed north of Genoa until 1972, when they moved to Central City, where they owned and operated a motel. They moved to Columbus in 1984.

He was a deacon of Palestine Baptist Church. He later was a member of the Chapman Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church in Columbus. He enjoyed bowling and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Virginia (Mrs. Paul) Gwinner of Columbus and Lora (Mrs. Russ) Rice of Chapman; four sons, Craig of Hutchinson, Kan., Dean of Omaha, Donald and John, both of Kearney; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three sisters, Delores (Mrs. Donald) Bensen of St. Edward, Leola Johnson of Red Oak, Iowa, and Marjorie Pozehl of Omaha; one brother, Carrol of Columbus.
