Sarah Anderson

BATTLE CREEK -- Sarah C. Anderson, 93, of Battle Creek, formerly of Osceola, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at Faith Regional Hospital in Norfolk.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary Lutheran Church-Swede Home at rural Stromsburg. The Rev. Keith Brozek will officiate. Burial will be in the Swede Home Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home of Osceola is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Anderson was born icon on Sept. 20, 1906, at Swede Home to Fredrick and Hedvig (Anderson) Fredrickson. She was educated at Polk County District 47 School and Luther College in Wahoo.

She married Everett Anderson on Nov. 26, 1931, at Swede Home. They lived at rural Osceola and later at Battle Creek.

She was associated with the Lutheran religion and was a member of the LCW.

Survivors include one daughter, Judith Ann of Battle Creek; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Her husband died on Dec. 25, 1984. She also was preceded in death by an infant son; one brother, Clayton; and one sister, Genevieve.

Stephen Augustyn

BELLEVUE -- Stephen A. Augustyn, 89, of Bellevue, formerly of Loup City, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at a Bellevue nursing home.

Services were on Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bellevue. The Revs. Frank Lordermann and Andrew M. Augustyn officiates. Burial was in the Bellevue Cemetery.

Mr. Augustyn was born icon on July 22, 1910, at Loup City to John and Mary (Gzehoviak) Augustyn. He attended rural school and Loup City High School.

He married Lorraine Schmidt on June 25, 1946, in Mankato, Minn. The couple lived in Bellevue throughout their marriage.

Mr. Augustyn was affiliated with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms in Washington, D.C. He transferred to Omaha and retired after 38 years of service.

He enjoyed sports, was an avid golfer and shot a hole in one in 1979.

Mr. Augustyn was a charter member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sandra (Mrs. Adrian) Jaworski of Naperville, Ill., and Joyce (Mrs. Norman) Tierney of Omaha; three sons, Timothy and Roger, both of Omaha, and Brian of Overland Park, Kan.; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Al of Loup City and the Rev. Andrew M. Augustyn of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen; four brothers, Joseph, Leo, John and Edward; four sisters, Kathryn Kaminski, Anna Sok, Helen Toczek and Barbara Augustyn; and four half sisters, Della Jaworski, Minne Sliva, Nora McCarville and Mary Golka.

Lloyd Blau

CLAY CENTER -- Lloyd Kenneth Blau, 79, of Harvard died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McLaughlin Funeral Home in Clay Center. The Rev. John Green will officiate. Burial will be in the Lawrence Cemetery with military rites conducted by Lawrence American Post 45.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Blau was born icon on Feb. 4, 1920, in Deweese to Carl Ludwig and Myrtle Mae (Smith) Blau.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 94th Armed Field Battalion 4th Division. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, Normandy battles and the Rhineland.

He married Verna Irene Snell on Sept. 17, 1947, in Minden. They lived in Fairfield until 1974, when they moved to Harvard. Mrs. Blau died on Nov. 16, 1987. Mr. Blau worked as a welder and mechanic. He liked to invent things that would make things work better and faster.

He worked for many years at Morrison Quirk, then T&L Irrigation and finally M&P hog confinement operation near Hastings.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1346 of Hastings.

Survivors include three daughters, Irene (Mrs. Bill) Bevard of Abilene, Kan., Janice (Mrs. Howard) Jacobsen of Scotia and Kathleen (Mrs. Don) Guenther of Jackson, Mich.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two grandsons and two brothers, Elmer and Wilbur.

'Jerry' Callahan

LEXINGTON -- Jerome James Patrick "Jerry" Callahan, 70, of Lexington, formerly of Wood River, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at his home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington with the Rev. Don Buhrman officiating. Burial with military honors will be in St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery at Lexington.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m., with a wake service at 7 p.m., Tuesday at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Callahan was born icon on March 26, 1929, at Wood River to William P. and Magdelina C. (Bohnart) Callahan. He grew up in the Wood River/Shelton area. He graduated from Shelton High School in 1946.

He married Betty Ann Garrett on March 7, 1951, in Wood River. He entered the U.S. Army on March 12, 1951, and served in Korea until March 18, 1953. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, four bronze service stars, the United Service Medal, two overseas bars and the Meritorious Unit Commendation.

Following his discharge, the couple lived in Wood River until 1957. He worked for Fairbanks Pump and Irrigation. The couple moved to Lexington in 1957. He was employed by local hay mills and John Deere until he became totally disabled from a massive heart attack at the age of 36.

He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, the Eagles Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include three sons, William and Curt, both of Lexington, and R.J. of Overton; five daughters, Rhonda Smith of Grand Island, Sheila (Mrs. Albert) Spears of Hastings, Kelley (Mrs. Stan) Karas of Lexington, Kristy (Mrs. Randy) Ceballos of Wood River and Misty (Mrs. Lyle) Timmens of Overton; 25 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Frank of Wood River and Floyd and Raymond, both of Grand Island; and two sisters, Evelyn Petersen of Cozad and Joanne (Mrs. Ski) Rosinski of San Francisco.

He was preceded in death by his wife, two grandchildren and two brothers.

Evelyn Koelling

MILFORD, Iowa -- Evelyn Violet Koelling, 83, of Milford, Iowa, died Jan. 7, 2000.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Faith United Methodist Church in Grand Island. The Revs. Richard Karohl, Don Nunnally and Richard Urbach will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time Friday at the church.

Mrs. Koelling was born icon on Dec. 7, 1916, at Ord to Asa and Blanche (Earnest) Leonard. The family lived in the Mira Valley community on a farm 10 miles south of Ord. She grew up there and attended school.

She married Melvin Koelling on Feb. 18, 1934. They began their married life on a farm in Mira Valley. Seven years later, when the North Loup River Irrigation Project became a reality, they moved to a farm on the edge of North Loup.

They moved to Naperville, Ill., where Mr. Koelling attended college and seminary in preparation for their new vocation. After completing the seminary, the family moved in 1952 to Nebraska, where Mr. Koelling was assigned a pastorate by the Nebraska Conference of the Evangelical United Brethren Church.

Mrs. Koelling especially enjoyed the youth and worked with them, both in the church and the community. She was a sewing leader for 4-H clubs. She also served her church on the conference level. For three years, she was district president of the Women's Society of World Services. She served on the state committee for the women at the time of the union of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church. She also served on the district nominating committee for three years for the United Methodist Women.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, needle point, ceramics and other artistic skills.

Survivors include a daughter, Charlene Takahashi of Kailua, Hawaii; three sons, Dennis and Gary of Milford, Iowa, and Rodney of Austin, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Her husband died in 1995. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Vere and Leslie; and two sisters, Myrnie and Pearl.

Thomas Pumphrey

POMONA, Calif. -- Thomas D. Pumphrey, 67, of Pomona, Calif., formerly of Grand Island, died Dec. 22, 1999, at Chino Valley Medical Center.

A remembrance service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Don Larmore will officiate.

Mr. Pumphrey was born icon on June 15, 1932, in Shickley to Glenn and Sadie (Pape) Pumphrey. He grew up in the Shickley area, graduated from high school and attended Doane College in Crete. He served in the U.S. Army for three years.

He married Marlene Krupicka on Aug. 3, 1954. They lived in Grand Island. He later moved to California, where he worked as a property manager.

He later married Kaye Pumphrey. She preceded him in death.

He was a member of Charles P. Rowe American Legion Post 30 in Pomona.

Survivors include his daughter, Kim (Mrs. Jon) Rojewski of Grand Island; three grandchildren; and a sister, Donnis (Mrs. Bill) Mountford of Lincoln.

Carole Steffen

BRANDENTON, Fla. -- Carole Ann Steffen, 61, of Brandenton, Fla., formerly of Grand Island, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at her home.

Wiegand Brothers Funeral Home of Brandenton is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Southwest Florida.

Mrs. Steffen was born icon in Grand Island. She was a 1956 graduate of Grand Island Senior High. They moved from Omaha to Manatee County, Fla., in 1995.

Survivors include her husband, Don; two daughters, Kimberly Ann Steffen of Beatrice and Pitricia Kay Steffen Abel of Omaha; and one brother, Robert Hehnke of Branson, Mo.

Steve Amack

Steve R. Amack, 44, of Grand Island died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln after a short illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Peace Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. John Kunze will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday at Kleine Funeral Home chapel. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Amack was born icon May 4, 1955, to Raymond and Wanda (Anderson) Amack at Superior. He grew up and attended school in Superior, graduating from Superior Senior High in 1973. He traveled and worked in various places for 14 years before settling in Minnesota.

He married Friday Fringer on Sept. 4, 1987, at Chaska, Minn. The couple lived in Minnesota and Idaho before moving to Grand Island in October 1994. He was service technician manager at Wendy's in Grand Island at the time of his death.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and taught Sunday school for many years. He served as assistant soccer coach for the Grand Island Terminators girls traveling soccer team.

He enjoyed flying and even worked toward his private pilot's license and was an avid downhill skier.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Christian of Grand Island; one daughter, Carli of Grand Island and two brothers, Ron of Chadron and Roger of Superior.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
