Elma Dixon

Elma V. Dixon, 91, of Grand Island, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at the St. Francis Medical Center of Grand Island.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the All Faiths Chapel at Nebraska Veterans home in Grand Island. The Rev. Del Roper will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the Trinity United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Dixon was born icon May 10, 1908, to John and Frances (Jelinek) Kennedy at Mason City. She grew up at Mason City and went to school in Boelus.

She married Charles Dixon on Dec. 8, 1925. The couple lived in St. Paul. In 1942 they moved to Grand Island where she worked for St. Francis Hospital and Delicious Foods. She retired in 1954. Mr. Dixon died in 1989.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Veterans of World War I, and a life member of the VFW and St. Paul American Legion Unit No. 119. She volunteered at the Veterans Hospital and enjoyed doing crafts.

Survivors include one daughter, Peggy (Mrs. Jim) Stewart of Greeley, Colo.; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mildred Scheibe of Broken Bow, Eunice Van Sant of Indianapolis, Norma Hochriter of Ravenna and Rosie Speltz of Fairfield, Calif.; and one brother, Roy D. Fries of Phoenix, Ariz.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Dixie Miller; two sisters, Margaret Hatch and an infant sister; and two brothers, Joe and George Fries.

'Wayne' O'Neal

R. "Wayne" O'Neal, 79, of Grand Island, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at his home after an illness.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dwayne Bennett will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Kleine Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church.

Mr. O'Neal was born icon Jan. 11, 1920, at Hildreth to Cyrus and Happy (Ogle) O'Neal. At the age of 7 his father died and the family moved to Grand Island. He attended Grand Island Public Schools and graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1939.

He joined the Nebraska Army National Guard while in high school and upon graduation he rode the troop trains from Grand Island to Portland and Seattle during the war.

He began working for the Union Pacific Railroad as a clerk in 1939 and retired in 1973 due to health.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church and had been active in the Woodland Golf Course, the Liederkranz and Saddle Club, as well as the Masonic Ashlar Lodge. He enjoyed playing golf, horse races, sports, gardening, yard work and using the Internet.

Survivors include his wife, Henrietta of Grand Island; three daughters, Judith Moorberg of Guilford, Conn., Janice (Mrs. Kent) George of North Platte and Barbara (Mrs. Robert) Sutter of Ft. Collins, Colo.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leo and Chauncey, one sister, Glenna, one stepsister and four stepbrothers.

Larry Davis

FULLERTON -- Larry Davis, 79, of Fullerton, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at his home.

Services are pending with Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton.

Helen F. Meester

HASTINGS -- Helen F. Meester, 92, of Hastings, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000 at Perkins Pavilion.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Chapel with the Rev. Carl W. Utley officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service time on Thursday.

Memorials are suggested to the family. Livingston-Butler-Volland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Meester was born icon Nov. 23, 1907 in Macedonia, Iowa to Clifton and Jennie (Dillard) Tibbles. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1926 and attended Hastings College where she obtained her teaching certificate.

She taught school for two years and worked for Lincoln Telephone and Telegram for seven years.

On Feb. 27, 1937, she married Louis L. Meester in Hastings. They moved to Hastings from McCook in 1965. Mrs. Meester was a homemaker, and a member of First Presbyterian Church, church circle and U.C.T. Ladies Club.

Survivors include one son, Robert L. Meester of Lincoln; one granddaughter; three stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one brother and a stepgrandson.

Hilbert Newquist

FULLERTON -- Hilbert "Lucky" Newquist, 77, of Fullerton, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at the Central Nebraska Rehabilitation Center in Fullerton.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Palmer Funeral Home. The Rev. Mary McQueen will officiate. Burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island at 11 a.m. with military rites by Fullerton and Belgrade American Legion.

Palmer Funeral Home of Fullerton is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Newquist was born icon July 24, 1922, at Fullerton to Hilbert and Agnes (Matthiessen) Newquist. He attended rural schools.

He married Dorothy Redding on Sept. 22, 1955, at St. Paul. They lived in Grand Island. He drove a truck for Nash-Finch, Rapid Freight and Skagway.

In 1971, he started working as groundskeeper for the Grand Island School System. He retired in 1986.

Mrs. Newquist died in 1984. In 1988 he moved to Fullerton.

He enjoyed fishing.

He was a member of the Fullerton American Legion and Eagles.

Survivors include his son, Michael of Fullerton; a stepson, Jack Burns of Antioc, Calif.; four stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, Don of Yuma, Ariz. and Carol Hans of Selinsgrove, Pa.; and three sisters, Mildred Devischer of Sacramento, Calif., Shirley (Mrs. Tom) Jones of Lake Sonora, Calif. and Virginia (Mrs. Carol) Horst of Omaha.

In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Earl and one sister, Viola Devischer.

Phyllis Packer

HASTINGS -- Phyllis E. Packer, 80, of Perkins Pavilion, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Perkins Pavilion.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Chapel. The Rev. Judith Allen will officiate. Burial will be in Cedarview Cemetery at Doniphan.

There will be no visitation. Mrs. Packer was cremated. Book signing will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church of Hastings.

Mrs. Packer was born icon June 6, 1919, in Doniphan to George S. and Anna (Shehein) Denman. She graduated from Doniphan High School in 1937.

She married Roger L. Packer in Fairbury in 1939.

She worked for Brach Thompson and Spady Motors in Hastings. She moved to Denver and was co-owner of Naturalizer Shoe Store for 25 years with her husband. They moved back to Hastings in 1983.

Mr. Packer died in 1998.

She was a member of First Christian Church.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, Elvin Denman and Robert Denman of Grand Island, Mary Ann Bowden and Lola Cosgriff of Doniphan, Shirley Nelson of Gothenburg and Linda Finnell of South Sioux City.

Eldon Schmidt

ORD -- Eldon F. Schmidt, 52, of Ord, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Ord.

Apfel Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. John Seberg

FULLERTON -- Dr. John L. Seberg, 89, of Fullerton died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000 at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, Calif.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Fullerton. The Rev. Jim Howland will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton.

Dr. Seberg was born icon Dec. 29, 1910, at Upland to Lewis and Edith (Spors) Seberg. He moved with his family to Elwood in 1923. He graduated from Elwood High School in 1928. He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1936. He moved to Fullerton and opened a dental practice on Sept. 1, 1936.

He married Janet Clark of Elwood on May 1, 1938.

He served as Captain in the U.S. Army in Europe with the 137th Infantry and the 35th Infantry Division. He went ashore at Normandy on D-Day and served under General George Patton during the drive to Germany. He received the Bronze Star.

He continued in his dental practice until retiring in 1976. Mrs. Seberg died Sept. 29, 1999.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served many of the church offices. He was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W., Tatters, served 12 years on the school board, 10 years on the hospital board, was past president of the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce and Fullerton Lions. For many years he served on the Red Cross Committee.

He was very active statewide in his profession where he served as past president of Northern District of Nebraska Dental Association, a charter member of the William P. Higgins Study Club, life member and past president of the Woodbury Study Club and 25 years as a member of the Nebraska Board of Dental Examiners.

Survivors include one son, Dr. Richard Seberg of Newport Beach, Calif.; one daughter, Diane (Mrs. Allan) Myers of Roseville, Calif.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Dr. G. Herbert Seberg and Dr. John Seberg, both of Hastings.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Glenn.

John Johnson

BEATRICE -- John J. Johnson, 93, of Beatrice, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at the Beatrice Manor.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Beatrice. The Rev. Douglas Allen will officiate. Burial will be at the Evergreen Home Cemetery of Beatrice. A family prayer service will be at 1:45 p.m. in the fellowship room of the church.

Visitation will be until 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice. Further visitation will be one hour preceding the services at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Beatrice or St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Dewitt.

Mr. Johnson was born icon March 10, 1906, at rural Pickrell and attended the Hartzell Country School. He lived and farmed east of Pickrell with his parents.

He married Erna Umbefunde on Nov. 18, 1937, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church of rural Dewitt. They lived and farmed at rural Cortland until retiring and moving into Beatrice in 1974.

He is a former member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Dewitt and was currently a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Beatrice.

Survivors include four sons, Alvin of Burlington, Kan., Donald of Grand Island and Richard and Robert, both of Lincoln; one daughter, Bertha of Lincoln; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Frederick Johnson of Beatrice; and two sisters, Tena (Mrs. Rickie) Evers of Beatrice and Emma (Mrs. Menn) Ideus of Cortland.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Dec. 14, 1983, three brothers, William, Heye and Onnie Johnson and five sisters, Ette Johnson, Elsabe Philipp, Mary Johnson, Anne Wolken and Etta Unbefunde.
