Emma Novotny

ST. PAUL -- Emma L. Novotny, 87, of St. Paul died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at St. Francis Skilled Care Unit in Grand Island.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Thomas Hyde will officiate. Burial will be in Ord City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Paul EMTs or St. Paul Library.

Mrs. Novotny was born icon Aug. 8, 1912, at the family farm near Arcadia to Emil and Ida (Radil) Skolil. She attended Pleasant Dale School near Arcadia.

She moved with her parents to Ord in 1920. She graduated from Ord High School in 1931.

She married Frank Novotny on Aug. 25, 1931, at Ord. The couple farmed for 40 years southwest of Elba. They retired and moved to St. Paul in 1972. Mr. Novotny died on March 9, 1982. She remained in St. Paul for the rest of her life.

She was a member of Christmas Club in Elba.

Survivors include three sisters, Elsie Skala and Elaine Schriner both of St. Paul; Elma (Mrs. Jimmie) Hrebec of North Loup.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Viola Kolar.

Luella Placzek

ST. PAUL -- Luella Placzek, 74, of St. Paul died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul with the Reverends Michael McDermott and James Murphy officiating. Burial will be in the Elm Wood Cemetery in St. Paul.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m.. to 9 p.m. Monday at the church. A vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Petersburg Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Placzek was born icon Oct. 18, 1925 to John and Mary (Siwinski) Jasnoch on the family farm southeast of Ashton.

She attended St. Francis Parochial School in Ashton and upon completing her education she worked at the Ravenna Creamery and Larchick's Cafe, both in Loup City.

On Nov. 19, 1946 she married Harry F. Placzek in Ashton. The couple lived in Wisner where Mrs. Placzek worked at a cafe.

In 1949 they moved to a farm east of Wolbach and in 1960 moved to a farm north of St. Paul.

Mrs. Placzek enjoyed dancing, crocheting, cooking, and playing cards.

She was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church and its Council of Catholic Women.

Survivors include her husband, Harry; one daughter, Linda (Mrs. Gary) Eilenstien of Rockville; one son, Ron Placzek of Newark, Ohio; six grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and a twin sister, Leona Bukowksi of Riverdale.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two daughters, Lynette Placzek and Rose Ann Placzek; and two brothers, Emmett Jasnoch and Arnold Jasnoch.

Beatrice Schrad

ST. EDWARD -- Beatrice C. Schrad, 94, of St. Edward died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Church in Petersburg. The Rev. Jeff Zyla will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion. Visitation will resume at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with a 7:30 p.m. wake service, and 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Mrs. Schrad was born icon June 20, 1905, to Phillip and Margaret (Henn) Mack on a farm south of Petersburg. She attended school at St. John's School and graduated from St. John's High School.

She married Bernard J. Schrad on April 21, 1925, at Petersburg. The couple lived and farmed two miles north of Petersburg until 1935, when they moved to a farm one mile south of Petersburg. They moved to Petersburg in 1949. She was a homemaker. Mr. Schrad died on July 13, 1982. She entered Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward in 1993.

She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Petersburg, Christian Mothers Altar Society in which she served in various offices and St. John's Quilting Club.

Survivors include four sons, Robert of Albion, Donald and Walter both of Columbus and Leonard of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Marilyn (Mrs. James) Thomas of Aurora, Colo.; 19 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Myra Heithoff; three brothers and one sister.

'Rub' Dahlstrom

MILACA, Minn. -- Reuben O. "Rub" Dahlstrom, 97, of Milaca, Minn., died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Elim Home in Milaca.

Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Peterson Johnson Funeral Home in Milaca, Minn. The Revs. Tom Sahlstrom and John Dahlstrom will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Milaca.

Visitation will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Milaca Historical Society and Milaca Alumni Band.

Mr. Dahlstrom was born icon Dec. 1, 1902, to Carl John and Augusta (Johnson) Dahlstrom in Milaca. He attended school in Milaca. He dropped out of school for two years to work. He then returned to school and graduated from Milaca High School in 1923.

He then worked for his father, an early Milaca pioneer shoemaker. He also worked for Odegards Ford Garage and was a partner in Dahlstrom, Helman and Berg Pontiac Garage and Dealership.

He married Bonna Valentine Wilkes on July 24, 1927, at Milaca.

He started his own auto body repair shop in Milaca in 1942. His first body shop was located in an alley just south of the current post office on the west side of Second Avenue. He purchased and renovated a building on West River Road in 1948. He worked at that location until he retired in 1976. Mrs. Dahlstrom died on Feb. 26, 1999.

He also was a creative, artistic, imaginative and inventive craftsman. His better-known inventions included Redi-Rub Sanding Block, Accelerator Pedal Depressor and the Paper Log Roller.

He was an active member of First Church of Christ Scientist in St. Cloud, Minn., where he served as first reader and treasurer. He also was on the church board and remodeling committee.

He served as an active mason in Lincoln Lodge No. 226 in Milaca, Eastern Star in Milaca and Zurah Shrine Temple in Minneapolis. He also was an adviser to Milaca Chapter Order of Demolay for many years. He also was a member of Milaca Historical Society and Milaca Alumni Band.

Survivors include four sons, David of Milaca, Peter of Anoka, Minn., John of Grand Island and James of New Hope, Minn. and seven grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Hugo, Walter and Sigurd; two sisters, Esther and Catherine and two half brothers, Harry and Gustav.

LeRoy V. 'Roy' Alleman

HASTINGS -- LeRoy V. "Roy" Alleman, 90, of Hastings died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Perkins Pavilion at Good Samaritan Village.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings.

Visitation is from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday, 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home and one hour before the service Tuesday at the church.

Mr. Alleman was born icon on Aug. 20, 1909, in Loup City to Vernon and Fannie (Huncker) Alleman. He studied journalism at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln for two years.

He married Irene Miller on Feb. 16, 1941. He was a farmer in the Comstock area and later owned the Grassland News in Thedford. He was a past editor for the central Nebraska Farmer/Stockman in Cozad and the Custer County Chief in Broken Bow.

Mr. Alleman and his wife moved from Broken Bow to Hastings in 1969. He retired from the Hastings Tribune, where he was a farm editor. He also published two books, "Blizzard of '49" and "The Bloody Saga at Whiterock."

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and a past member of Sertoma, Toastmasters and Men's Bible Study. He was an honorary member of Future Farmers of America.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Carol (Mrs. Eldon) Nowka of Grand Island; and one son, Daryl Alleman of Carbondale, Colo.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Walter Bartelt

DONIPHAN -- Walter Bartelt, 92, of Doniphan died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Cedar View Cemetery in Doniphan with the Rev. Rodney Armon officiating. Burial will be in Cedar View Cemetery. Memorial services at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Doniphan will follow the burial.

There will be no visitation.

Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Heart Association or to the Cancer Foundation.

Mr. Bartelt was born icon on Jan. 29, 1907, at Tigerton, Wisc., to Charles and Amanda (Neubauer) Bartelt. He moved to Nebraska when he was 4, grew up in the Grand Island area and attended Trinity Lutheran Grade School and Grand Island Senior High.

He married Mabel Falldorf on May 18, 1928, at Kearney. They lived in Hamilton County until 1960, where he was a self-employed farmer for 32 years. He retired in 1960, and they moved to Doniphan, where he built fences and farmed for various farmers.

In 1978, the couple retired to Forsyth, Mo. He returned to Hall and Hamilton County in 1995. Mrs. Bartelt died on July 26, 1995.

He was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Eagles Club No. 378 and Platt-Duetsche. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Della Coulter of Chippewa Falls, Wisc., and Lou Etta Teeter of Doniphan; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Leo Bartelt of Walla Walla, Wash.

Other than his wife, he was preceded in death two grandsons, three brothers and two sisters.

Dennis Bernard Donovan

GREELEY -- Dennis Bernard "Barney" Donovan, 77, of Greeley died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Beverly Care Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley with the Rev. Gerald Carlson officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday with rosaries at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the church.

T.J. Finn and Sons Mortuary of Greeley is in charge of arrangements.

Pearl Gehrman

MERNA -- Pearl Gehrman, 89, formerly of Merna, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at Thunderbird Samaritan Hospital in Glendale, Ariz.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. Burial will be in Cliff Cemetery west of Merna.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary.

Mrs. Gehrman was born icon on May 23, 1910, at Myrtle to Charles and Jennie (Wardrobe) Koening. She graduated from Arnold High School. She taught at the Cliff School for two years and at Maple Grove for one year.

She married Albert Gehrman on Dec. 17, 1932. They lived on various farms in Custer County until moving to Merna in 1949.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley (Mrs. Gary) Manning of Glendale, Ariz. and Sharlene Williams of Merna; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; three sisters, Opal Georgian, Vita Mae Patton and Marjoram (Mrs. Tom) McDonnell, all of Anderson, Calif.; and one brother, Gale Keening.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two children, Doris and Albert; one granddaughter, Patricia Williams; and three brothers, Lloyd, Jesse and Floyd.
