Carl Hitchler

SPALDING -- Carl E. Hitchler, 77, of the Greeley Care Home died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding with the Rev. Joe Hannappel officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.

Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church with rosaries at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Mr. Hitchler was born icon on Sept. 30, 1922, in Grand Island to Carl and Hannah (Todsen) Hitchler. He attended a rural school south of Spalding. He farmed with his father south of Spalding.

He married Betty O'Neill on Feb. 6, 1956, at St. Michael's Church in Spalding. He did construction work, farmed and worked at Spalding Public School until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Joan (Mrs. Denny) Goodrich of Greeley and Mary (Mrs. Robbie) Langer of Spalding; five sons, Gene, Dennis "Muff," Pat and Michael, all of Spalding and Jim of LaMars, Iowa; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Albright and Salome Albright; and three brothers, Pete, Don and Robert.

Luella Placzek

ST. PAUL -- Luella Placzek, 74, of St. Paul died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.

Services are pending with Peters Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Louise Starostka

CLARKS -- Louise Starostka, 71, of Clarks died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at Park Place Health Care Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Clarks with the Rev. Don Cleary officiating. Burial will be in the Clarks Cemetery.

Visitation is from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the church with a 5 p.m. vigil and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.

McKown Funeral Home of Columbus and Silver Creek is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Starostka was born icon on Sept. 2, 1928, at Columbus to Peter and Sophie (Bogus) Teterus Sr. She grew up in Cornlea. She attended St. Michael's School in Tarnov.

She married Clarence "Shorty" Starostka on Sept. 10, 1946, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Tarnov. They lived in Wisconsin, Palmer and then moved to the Clarks area. They ran Shorty's Bar in Clarks for 45 years.

She enjoyed gardening, playing cards and canning.

Survivors include her husband of Clarks; one daughter, Betty (Mrs. Don) Kropatsch of Duncan; two sons, Jim of Chappell and Marc of Grand Island; two sisters, Jo Frey of Columbus and Cathy Ripka of California; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, seven brothers and one grandson.

Troy Reil Troy Lynn Reil, 32, of Grand Island, formerly of Lexington, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at his home in Grand Island of natural causes.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Lexington. The Revs. Todd Karges and Nick Tubbs will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Reynolds Love Chapel in Lexington.

Memorials are suggested to the Troy Reil Memorial Fund.

Mr. Reil was born icon Oct. 13, 1967, at Lexington to Ervin L. and Joyce M. (Lazar) Reil.

He grew up and attended school at Lexington, graduating from Lexington High School in 1986. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lexington and the Lexington Bowling Association.

He enjoyed bowling and helped with the youth bowling program. He also enjoyed being with kids, babysitting, music and going to Sawyer Brown concerts. He collected Precious Moments Figurines.

Survivors include his mother, Joyce Reil of Lexington; his grandmother, Fern James of Elwood; and three brothers, Craig of Papillion, Jason of Missouri Valley, Iowa and Bryan of Lincoln.

He was preceded in death by his father; an infant sister, Tracy; and his grandparents, Herman and Stella Reil and Clifford James.

Dick Samuelson

Dick W. Samuelson, 76, of Grand Island died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at St. Francis Memorial Health Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Messiah Lutheran Church. The Rev. Douglas Stensby will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday in the Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Mr. Samuelson was born icon on Oct. 31, 1923, in Milford to Richard and Jessie (Moorberg) Samuelson. He grew up in Milford and graduated from high school in Walthill. He then attended Iowa State University for a year and the University of Nebraska for a year.

He entered the U.S. Navy on Nov. 23, 1942, and served during World War II. He was discharged on Jan. 23, 1946.

He married Orva B. Gjerde on May 17, 1953, in Emmetsburgh, Iowa. The couple lived in Lincoln for five years, Columbus for 19 years and Grand Island for 27 years. He was a wholesale drug salesman for 40 years. He retired in the late 1980s and then worked for Jack & Jill and Skagway grocery stores.

He was a member of the Platt-Duetsche, Eagles and American Legion. He was on the council and sang in the choir at Messiah Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Janell (Mrs. Terry) Schutte of Imperial; three grandchildren; and a sister, Lois (Mrs. John) Torpey of Lincoln.

Dean Bonsall

SCOTIA -- Jesse Dean Bonsall, 80, of Scotia died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at the Howard County Hospital in St. Paul.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Ord Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Wayne Rouse will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery at Scotia.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Bonsall was born icon on May 23, 1919, at Scotia to Jesse and Jennie (Burton) Bonsall. He graduated from Scotia Consolidated School in 1937. He played the trombone and sang in the boys glee and mixed choirs. He also played in the town band for many years.

He worked with his parents on the farm south of Scotia until he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps on Dec. 30, 1941. He served as an airplane mechanic and instrument mechanic in the 403rd Bomb Squadron, reaching the rank of technical sergeant. He received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Bronze Star. He was discharged on Sept. 2, 1945, at Alliance.

He married Shirley Spilinek on March 18, 1948, at North Loup.

They farmed north of Ord before moving to a farm nine miles south of Scotia. They later moved to Papillion, where he worked for the school system as a maintenance repairman for 10 years. He then worked for Continental Can Co. of Omaha for five years. They moved back to Scotia in July 1966. He was North Loup-Scotia's bus supervisor for two years and helped his father farm. He also did a lot of carpentry work.

His hobbies included photo developing, woodworking, adding on to their home, riding his motorcycle and camping.

He was active in Boy Scouts throughout his youth and later was a Boy Scout leader. He served as 4-H leader between 1933 and 1940.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jimmie Dean of Alliance, Russell of Grand Island and Terry of Scotia; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Gene "Buz."

Frank Hauser

DUNNING -- Frank Hauser, 75, of Dunning, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are pending at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Mark Rutten Sr. CEDAR RAPIDS -- Mark Joseph Rutten Sr., 67, of Cedar Rapids died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services are pending with Levander Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids.

Louis Herchenbach

LINDSAY -- Louis P. Herchenbach, 72, of Lindsay died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Columbus Community Hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Lindsay. The Rev. James Novotny will officiate. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery in Lindsay.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Monday, all at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Duesman Funeral Chapel in Humphrey is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Herchenbach was born icon on Oct. 26, 1927, at St. Bernard to Peter and Angela (Weidner) Herchenbach. He attended St. Bernard's Catholic School.

He married Janice Melcher on April 24, 1951, at Cornlea. The couple lived in the St. Bernard community, where he farmed until they moved to Lindsay in 1991.

He entered the U.S. Army in February 1953 and served in the Korean War as a private in Company A 498th Engineer Battalion until February 1955.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council in Lindsay. He served on the Lindsay Holy Family school board and was a past board member of FHA.

Survivors include one son, Daryl of Lindsay; three daughters, LuAnn (Mrs. Mike) Carraher of Grand Island, Dee (Mrs. Steve) Pfeifer of Lindsay and Sally (Mrs. Mark) Korth of Humphrey; 11 grandchildren; one brother, Jerry of Humphrey; and three sisters, Iona Dempsey of Omaha, Elda Mae (Mrs. Lee) Hemmer and Mary (Mrs. Ivan) VanDyke, both of Norfolk.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mark and Eugene; and one sister, Romana Hemmer.

Dorthey Martens

FREMONT -- Dorthey Martens, 81, of Fremont, formerly of Giltner, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.

Services were on Thursday at the First Lutheran Church in Fremont. The Revs. Mark Grorud and Norman L. Freund officiated. Burial was in Memorial Cemetery at Fremont.

Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Martens was born icon on Feb. 19, 1918, in Ayr. She grew up in the Giltner, Ayr, Blue Hill and Red Cloud areas. She graduated from Giltner High School. She lived in Montana for a brief time and moved to Fremont in 1939.

She married Raymond Martens on July 3, 1940, in Papillion. She worked for the Nebraska Ordnance Plant in Mead during World War II. She was a caregiver for the Eastern Nebraska Office on Retardation for 12 years.

She started a Parkinson's support group in Fremont. She moved in October 1999 to A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Fremont and a charter member of the Fremont Area Art Association.

Survivors include a son, Larry of Fremont; a daughter, Sherry Garfield of Fremont; a stepdaughter, Eloise Livermore of Fremont; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Marjorie Napier of Miamisberg, Ohio; and two sisters-in-law, Agnes Derr of Grand Island and Lillie Matthiessen of Shelby, Iowa.
