Dennis Miller

HILDRETH -- Dennis W. Miller, 79, of Hildreth, formerly of Gibbon, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at his home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon. The Rev. Robert Flynn will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon. American Legion Post 310 in Gibbon will provide military rites.

There will be no visitation.

Mr. Miller was born icon on May 21, 1920, at Fort Morgan, Colo., to Dennis F. and Alice (Vian) Miller. He grew up in Mitchell and attended school there. The family moved to Gibbon in the early 1940s.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European theater. After the war, he returned to Gibbon and worked for area construction companies.

He married Lois Mortensen on April 3, 1951. The couple lived in Gibbon. He worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant in Grand Island and later worked for Moss Construction. He retired from Kearney Concrete.

Survivors include two sons, Larry of Hildreth and Roger of Farmersville, Texas; three daughters, Clara Wilcox of Fullerton, Sharon White of Fairbury and Judy Fish of Kearney; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Inez Terry of Atlanta.

He was preceded in death by his wife, five brothers and four sisters.

Lois Neubert

FREMONT -- Lois S. Neubert, 88, of Fremont died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at the Fremont Area Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Grand Island City Cemetery. The Rev. Richard Karohl will officiate.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday with the family receiving friends from 3 to 5 p.m. at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Neubert was born icon May 15, 1911, to Otto and Bertha (Rickert) Schroeder at Alda. She grew up on a farm near Alda. She lived in Western Nebraska before moving to Fremont in th `e early 1940s.

She married Glenn Neubert on Aug. 12, 1930, at Grand Island. He died May 1, 1996.

Survivors include a brother, Lavern Schroeder of Columbus and four sisters, Edna Wagner of Grand Island, Hazel Bittinger of Fremont, Vivian (Mrs. Evertt) Hulme of Bellevue and Norma (Mrs. Larry) Barber of Denver.

Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Gary Neubert and four brothers, Lester, Raymond, Albert and Mervin Schroeder.

Otena Elliott

PHOENIX -- Otena Elliott, 88, of Phoenix, formerly of Dannebrog, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Scottsdale Presbyterian Church in Scottsdale, Ariz. Mrs. Elliott will be cremated. The family will bury her.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Make-a-Wish Foundation in Phoenix.

Messinger Mortuary and Chapel in Scottsdale is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Elliott was born icon on Sept. 22, 1911, in Dannebrog to Maurits and Annania (Kjeldsen) Andersen. She grew up there and graduated from Dannebrog High School.

She married the Rev. James S. Elliott in August 1932 at Dannebrog. She was a homemaker. She moved to Arizona 35 years ago from Kansas. The Rev. Elliott died in 1991.

Mrs. Elliott was a member of the Scottsdale Presbyterian Church. She served as a volunteer at the Arizona Center for the Blind and the Guadalupe Presbyterian Mission in Guadalupe, Ariz.

Survivors include three sons, Dale of Durango, Colo., Jim and Tom, both of Phoenix; two daughters, Mary Ann Burke of Phoenix and Ruth Budden of Topeka, Kan.; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.

Billie Hegler

FOREST LAKE, Minn. -- Billie Jean Hegler, 72, of Forest Lake, Minn., formerly of Grand Island, died Nov. 6, 1999, at Birtchwood Care Center in Forest Lake.

Services were on Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Forest Lake. Mattson Funeral Home of Forest Lake was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the church music department.

Mrs. Hegler was born icon on Nov. 19, 1926, on a farm near O'Neill to Heber and Freda M. (Anderson) Breiner. She attended Lincoln and Howard elementary schools, Walnut Junior High School and graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1944.

She married Roy E. Hegler on Sept. 21, 1946, in Oak Lawn, Ill. They lived in Illinois, North Carolina and Massachusetts before moving to Forest Lake. After her husband's retirement, they traveled, spending their winters in Florida, Arizona or Texas.

Her activities included volunteering at the Senior Center, bingo, cards, music and entertaining in their home.

Survivors include two sons, James and Douglas of Forest Lake, Minn; two grandchildren; her father, of Grand Island; one brother, Albert "Bud" Breiner of Grand Island; and five sisters, Pat Knox and Bonnie (Mrs. Cliff) Arnold of Grand Island, Wanda Kingry of Lakewood, Colo., Beverly (Mrs. Gerald) Troester of St. Louis and Cheryl (Mrs. M.L.) Ehlert of St. Joseph, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her mother.

Bonnie Pringey

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Bonnie Pringey, 75, formerly of Grand Island, died Oct. 30, 1999, in Colorado Springs, Colo., after a lengthy illness.

Services on Nov. 2 in Colorado Springs were followed by a crypt burial.

Mrs. Pringey was born icon on Feb. 12, 1924, in Grand Island to H. Leo and Lola Smith. After graduating from Grand Island Senior High in 1942, she attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

She married Wayne W. Pringey on Aug. 16, 1947, in Grand Island. They lived in Grand Island, Minneapolis, Hastings and Colorado Springs.

Survivors include a son, Gary L. of Frisco, Colo.; a daughter, Nancy K. Epstein of Omaha; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Myrtle Hargan

Myrtle M. Hargan, 83, of Grand Island died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at the Skilled Nursing Unit of St. Francis Memorial Health Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Herb Schutte will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Children's Home.

Mrs. Hargan was born icon Aug. 16, 1916, to Archie C. and Alma V. (Brown) Jensen at Platte, S.D. She grew up in Gannvalley, S.D., and attended school on the Indian Reservation. She was stricken with polio at the age of 5. She later graduated in 1935 as the salutatorian of her class.

She married Donald Hargan in 1936 in South Dakota. They lived in South Dakota and later moved to Missouri and farmed. They owned and operated a Gamble's Store in Salem, Mo. She ran the store along with her father-in-law while her husband was serving and held prisoner during World War II.

They sold their store and moved to Iowa where she worked as a professional seamstress. In 1952, they moved to Mitchell, S.D., where she worked as a seamstress and homemaker. She later worked as a bookkeeper for the area rural electric company. She moved to Grand Island in 1969. She worked in the occupational therapy department of the Nebraska Veterans Home in the late 1970s. She then lived in Rockford, Ill., from 1981 to 1984 before returning to Grand Island.

She enjoyed crafts, crocheting, cooking, playing cards and collecting dolls. She dressed dolls for the Christmas Cheer drive for a number of years.

Survivors include two sons, Garney Hargan of Sacramento, Calif., and Dennis Hargan of Troutman, N.C.; one daughter, Sheri (Mrs. David) Jelinek of Grand Island; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Jensen of Rolla, Mo., and Don Jensen of Springfield, Mo.; and one sister, Velmere Cooksey of Salem, Mo.

She was preceded in death by one son, Larry Hargan.

Hazelle Cole

BROKEN BOW -- Hazelle Elizabeth (Jacobsen) Headley Cole, 98, of Broken Bow died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Broken Bow. The Rev. Fred Roedger will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Govier Brothers Mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church in Broken Bow, Prairie Pioneer Center, Custer County Foundation Scholarship Fund or to Heritage Hall Nursing Home.

Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cole was born icon May 18, 1901, to John Harry and Mary Elizabeth (Fougeron) Jacobsen on her grandfather's farm near Crete in Saline County. She came with her parents, sister and five brothers to Custer County in March 1906. She was educated in the Custer Center School District and graduated from Merna High School in May 1920. She graduated from State Normal School in Kearney in June 1925 with an elementary teachers degree. She taught in several rural schools.

She married Kenneth C. Headley on Feb. 23, 1927. They had one daughter, Kay Janis, who died Sept. 6, 1942.

The Headley's began the Headley Transfer Trucking Co. in 1928. She was active with her husband in the trucking business until it was sold in 1945. They had extensive land holdings in Custer County, South Dakota and Montana. They lived for a time in South Dakota where they farmed wheat until 1958 when they returned to Broken Bow. Mr. Headley died Aug. 31, 1962.

She married Forrest H. Cole on Oct. 1, 1972, in Denver. The couple lived in Broken Bow. He died in December 1989. She continued to live in her own home until her health began to fail at which time she went to live at Heritage Hall in September 1993.

She was active in the First Presbyterian Church, the Latrea Circle and served on many committees and boards of the church. She was a longtime member of the Custer Center Grange, having joined in 1920. She traveled and took many trips with the Grange groups.

She especially enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens. She also enjoyed playing cards and played in several bridge clubs.

Survivors include a sister, Evelyn Mathews of Boise; stepdaughters, Margaurite (Mrs. Charles) Rose, Betty Ann (Mrs. Robert) Diederichs and June (Mrs. Richard) Rose, all of Denver.

Other than her husbands and daughter, she was preceded in death by five brothers, John, George, Ross, Charles and Elmer "Pete;" three sisters, Edna Cosner, Mildred Parkins, Berniece Bushnell and an infant brother and sister.

Kee Samples

AURORA -- Kee Kenneth Samples, 88, of Aurora died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Aurora. The Rev. Jay Mitchell will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.

Visitation was Friday at the Higby Mortuary.

Mr. Samples was born icon Oct. 5, 1911, to Salathiel and Kate (Stevens) Samples at Holbrook. He was raised in Holbrook. His family first lived on a farm and then moved to town. He was valedictorian of Holbrook High School class of 1928 where he was active in music and athletics. He started his own retail grocery store in Holbrook before moving to Hayes Center where he also owned his own grocery store.

He married Mildred Banwell in 1933 at Holbrook and they had two sons. She died Jan. 1, 1958.

He married Doris (Meese) Kingston on Dec. 20, 1959, in Aurora. He worked for Safeway Stores in McCook, Cozad and Aurora for many years. He later worked for Red and White in Aurora.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, a past board member of the Hamilton County Senior Center and a member of the singing groups Victory Five and the Four Sharps and Two Flats.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jim Samples of Chanhassen, Minn., Ken Samples of Batavia, Ill., and Jimmy Kingston of Red Cloud; two daughters, Melva Jean Haack of Bradshaw and Grace (Mrs. Jim) Nordlund of Grand Island; 16 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Other than his first wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Gladys Stueber; one son, Roger Kingston; and a grandson.
