Myrtle Young

ALBION -- Myrtle Amelia Young, 89, of Albion died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Levander Funeral Home in Albion. The Rev. Terry Otto will officiate. Burial will be in the Akron Cemetery at Akron.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Levander Funeral Home in Albion with a 7 p.m. prayer service.

Mrs. Young was born icon Sept. 26, 1910, to William and Nancy (Hibbs) Lingel at Akron. She was baptized at the Presbyterian Church at Akron. She was educated through the eighth grade at District 53 School near Akron.

She married Raymond W. Young on Feb. 15, 1933, at Neligh. They lived and farmed in the Akron community and then later in the Loretto community where she worked as a farm wife. She was baptized and confirmed into the Loretto Methodist Church on Dec. 23, 1951.

In Fall 1956, they moved to Albion. In 1956 and 1957 they owned and operated Young's Cafe. She worked as a waitress at the Old Hotel and then worked at Mortensen's Dairy, later called Greens Dairy. In 1962, when Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center opened, she worked as a nurse for 16 years until retiring in 1978. Mr. Young died Oct. 30, 1989. She lived at her own home until August 1994 when she entered the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Akron and the Loretto Methodist Church in Loretto.

Survivors include one son, Larry Young and two daughters, Ardith (Mrs. Clinton) Peterson and Beverly (Mrs. Wayne) Buller, all of Albion; 14 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and one sister, Alice Meyer of Albion.

Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Sidney and Earl and three sisters, Eva Shaver, Jennie Hunter and Ethel Wilson.

Carl Hubel

MITCHELL -- Carl L. Hubel, 84, of Mitchell, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at the Mitchell Care Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mitchell Berean Church. The Rev. Mark Baker will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Chambers Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of service Sunday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Jones Mortuary in Mitchell is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hubel was born icon Oct. 12, 1915, at Bliss to Frank and Antonia (Tagel) Hubel. He attended school in Holt County and took a mechanic short course at the University of Nebraska in 1933.

He married Maryhelen Lorenzen on July 22, 1942.

In 1941 he was a welder in the shipyards at Long Beach, Calif. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and took his training at the San Diego Navel Base graduating as a shipfitter. During WWII he was aboard destroyers in the Pacific area and Japan. He received an honorable discharge as a shipfitter first class with a good conduct, victory medal, American area and Asiatic-Pacific medal in 1945.

He received his pilot license in 1941 and flew for 38 years.

He and Maryhelen ranched in Holt County for 20 years and also designed and built haying equipment. In 1956 he designed and built the first hydraulic 24 and 36 feet hay rakes and a power trail mower.

He and his wife moved to Alaska in 1965. While in Alaska he flew for a guide taking polar bear hunters out on the ice pack near Teller and for other hunting and flying trips. In 1970 he bought a taxidermy business at Mitchell and built a new shop, the Big Bear Taxidermy, which he operated for 16 years.

Carl attended the Mitchell Berean Church.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Dale of Elwood; two daughters, Delores (Mrs. Gene) Williams of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Janet (Mrs. Paul) Lundeen of Montrose, Colo.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul of Chambers and Otto of Hastings; and three sisters, Stephanie Burtwhistle of Chambers, Freida Honeywell of Neligh and Camillia Race of Norfolk.

He was preceded in death by three infant siblings; one brother, William; two sisters, Hilda Gibson and Christina Roth; and a great-grandson.

Leota Martin

CALLAWAY -- Leota Martin, 90, of Callaway died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at the Callaway District Hospital in Callaway.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Oconto. The Rev. Dale Coates will officiate. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Callaway.

Visitation was Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to the Callaway District Hospital Foundation or the United Methodist Church in Oconto.

Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Clifford Martin of Lexington and Roger Martin of Eddyville; six daughters, Vi Eggleston, Wanda (Mrs. Don) Eggleston and Beulah (Mrs. Ken) Eggleston, all of Oconto, Ruth (Mrs. Sid) Magoon and Virginia (Mrs. Virg) Coryell, both of Lexington and Darlene Davis of Smithfield; 21 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Clifford in 1983; two infant children, Evelyn and Richard; seven brothers; six sisters; two grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and one great-grandson.

Michele Gamble

PORT HURON, Mich. -- Michele T. Gamble, 36, of Port Huron Township, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, in her home.

Services were at St. Stephen's Church in Port Huron on Oct. 26.

Arthur Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Kody N. Gamble Scholarship Fund.

Ms. Gamble was born icon Nov. 22, 1962 in Grand Island to Dr. John M. and Kathleen (Clinch) McElroy.

She married Terry L. Gamble on Sept. 24, 1985, in Port Huron.

She was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church. She was Community Education Coordinator for the Port Huron Area School district.

Survivors include her husband; her parents of Grand Island; one son, Kody N. Gamble; one stepson, Kyle C. Gamble; one stepdaughter, Kristina L. Gamble; two brothers, Michael J. McElroy of Nebraska City and Mark E. McElroy of Lincoln; two sisters, Monica A. (Mrs. Roger) Reich of Minot, N.D. and Mary P. McElroy of California; her grandmothers, Mary E. Clinch of North Platte and Martha McElroy of Creston, Iowa.

Rosie Whyte

Rosie Whyte, 70, of Grand Island died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, Sunday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the church, the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Ann Chambers

SHELTON -- Elizabeth Ann Chambers, 80, of Shelton died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Gibbon.

Services are pending with Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon and Shelton.

Rolland Freeland

CENTRAL CITY -- Rolland Freeland, 68, of Central City died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Omaha.

Services are pending at Palmer's Funeral Home in Palmer.

Fae McElvain

PALMER -- Fae McElvain, 93, of Palmer died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ in Palmer. The Rev. Jerry Quandt will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Palmer Funeral Home in Palmer.

Memorials are suggested to the church or the Palmer Rescue Squad.

Mrs. McElvain was born icon on Oct. 4, 1906, in Malvern, Iowa, to the Rev. Harmon H. and Ethel (Green) Utterback. She was educated at various schools, including those in Scottsbluff, Elm Creek and Palmer.

She married Charles Ward McElvain on Nov. 14, 1923. They lived on a farm north of Palmer before moving into town in 1947. After the death of her daughter, Margie, Mrs. McElvain helped raise four of her grandchildren, Woody, John, Jean and Sally Keller.

She moved in with her granddaughter, Sally Berney, in 1998.

She was a member of the Palmer Church of Christ, It Suits Us and Royal Neighbors. She had been active in the Palmer Senior Citizens.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeanne (Mrs. Victor) Abbruzzese of Johnston, R.I.; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Gary McElvain; a daughter, Margie Keller; two grandsons; a brother, Robert Utterback; and two sisters, Zoe Sanders and Jane Pokorney.

Ernst Riekenberg

HAMPTON -- Ernst Riekenberg, 93, of Hampton died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at the Hearthstone in York.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church north of Hampton. The Rev. Loren Cooper will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.

Mr. Riekenberg was born icon on June 17, 1906, in Linn, Kan., to Fred and Emilie (Hornbostel) Riekenberg. He attended St. John's Lutheran School. He entered Concordia Teachers College in Seward in 1921. He attended the Vicarage at Bethlehem Lutheran in Bremen, Kan., in 1925-26. He returned and graduated from Concordia in 1928.

He married Elsie Loernker on July 1, 1928, at Bremen, Kan. He received his bachelor of science in education in 1959. He taught at St. John's Lutheran School in Hooker, Okla.; St. John's Lutheran in Palmer, Kan.; St. Mark's Lutheran in Ruskin; public and religious summer school in Filley; St. Paul's Lutheran in Preston, Kan.; Immanuel Lutheran in Breckinridge, Okla.; Trinity Lutheran in Hebron; and Zion Lutheran at Hampton. He retired in 1973.

He continued as part-time church organist and conducted Bible classes at Hamilton Manor and Bethesda Center. He transcribed German script documents for Concordia Historical Institute in St. Louis.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis of Hordville and Larry of Lincoln; two daughters, Joann (Mrs. Norris) Schardt of Davenport and Vivian (Mrs. Kenneth) Frost of Fremont; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Reinhardt of Filer, Idaho, and Paul of Linn, Kan.; and one sister, Paulina of Linn, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his wife and five brothers, Rudolf, Ludwig, Arnold, Fred and Robert.
