Norma Merchant
ST. PAUL -- Norma M. Merchant, 68, of St. Paul died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Thomas G. Hyde will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery at St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Peters Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Merchant was born
on Dec. 22, 1930, in Greeley County near Wolbach to Percy and Mamie (Worm) Thayer. She was educated in Greeley County rural schools and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1948. She then attended the Grand Island Beauty School.
She married Robert Merchant on July 16, 1950, at Wolbach. The couple first lived in Wolbach, where she worked as a beautician. They moved in 1954 to St. Paul, where the couple owned and operated Vanity Beauty Shop until 1984, when poor health forced her to retire.
She enjoyed crafts, painting and making her own greeting cards.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of St. Paul.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Robert G. Merchant and Roger R. Merchant, both of St. Paul; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Alberta Studley of Wolbach and Marie Dickey of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Alice Smith
ORD -- Alice Emma Smith, 93, of Ord died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ord Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Jim Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Miss Smith was bon Sept. 10, 1906, to Gustav and Emma (Neumann) Smith at the Davis Creek area of Valley County. She grew up on the family farm and attended District 66 country school and Ord High School.
She attended business school in Grand Island where she received her high school diploma and graduated from the business school. She began working for the government in Omaha and later in Washington D.C. For 35 years she worked for the IRS in San Francisco.
In 1981 she retired in Grand Island, living there until the fall of 1994 when she moved to Ord.
Survivors include two brothers, Alfred of Grand Island and Harold of Ord.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Louie and Oscar and one sister, Emma.
Rebecca Zlomke
ORD -- Rebecca Zlomke, 92, of Ord died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services are pending with Ord Memorial Chapel.
James S. "Jim" Ward
OMAHA -- James S. "Jim" Ward, 81, of Omaha, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at Omaha.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Crosby Burket Swanson Golden Colonial Chapel in Omaha. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
Mr. Ward was born
Jan. 5, 1918, at Flora, Miss.
He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was president and CEO of Continental Bridge Company, retiring in 1980. He had previously been employed by Peter Kiewit Corp.
Survivors include his wife, Floretta and three stepchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.
Berneitta Weitzel
HARVARD -- Berneitta May Weitzel, 72, of Harvard died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Harvard United Church of Christ. The Rev. Lonnie Logan will officiate. Burial will be in the Harvard Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Alberding-Wilson Funeral Home in Harvard.
Mrs. Weitzel was born
on May 30, 1927, at Harvard to Henry and Ivy (Palmer) Bruning. She grew up on the family farm south of Harvard and moved to Harvard before her marriage.
She married Paul Weitzel on Jan. 17, 1953. Mr. Weitzel died on Jan. 15, 1986.
She was a member of the Harvard United Church of Christ, where she was an active member of Women's Fellowship and the quilting group. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Finster of Green River, Wyo., Mary Nelson of Osceola and Judy Weitzel of Grand Island; two sons, Lyle of Grand Island and Stanley of Harvard; five grandchildren; and one sister, Maxine Byrkit of Clay Center.
Delzell Zoucha
LINCOLN -- Delzell Elizabeth Zoucha, 79, of Lincoln, formerly of Grand Island, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cathedral of the Risen Christ in Lincoln. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery in Schuyler.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral home in Lincoln. The rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Mrs. Zoucha was born
to Arnold and Wilma (Hackett) Styuefer.
She was a member of the Cathedral of the Risen Christ. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Mike Zoucha; two sons, Larry Zoucha and Rick Zoucha, both of Lincoln; and six grandchildren.
Harlan Dose
HAMPTON -- Harlan E. Dose, 79, of Hampton died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church north of Hampton. The Rev. Loren Cooper will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mr. Dose was born
on April 18, 1920, on the family farm 10 miles northwest of Hampton to Carl and Alvina (Dethloff) Dose. He graduated from Polk High School in 1938.
He married Gretchen Rein on April 18, 1941, at Mount Hope Lutheran Church in Riverton, Wyo. They lived their entire lives in the Hampton area, farming and feeding cattle. She died on Feb. 26, 1981.
He married Myrtle Hurley on June 12, 1982, at the United Lutheran Church in Hampton. She died on Sept. 28, 1992.
Mr. Dose was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Hampton Co-op Elevator and Livestock Feeders. He served on the board of directors of the First National Bank at Marquette.
Survivors include two sons, James and Robert, both of Hampton; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Arthur of Hampton; and two sisters, Irene Medlow of Riverton, Wyo., and Alma Heiden of Hampton.
He was preceded in death by both wives and one sister, Alice Kohtz.
Marilyn Locker
BURWELL -- Marilyn L. Locker, 53, of Burwell died Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Burwell. The Rev. Mark Middendorf will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Helen Poston
KEARNEY -- Helen Poston, 81, of Kearney died Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kearney. The Rev. Russ Sommerfeld will officiate. Burial will be in San Pedro, Calif.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna.
Memorials are suggested to the Lutheran Brotherhood or the donor's choice.
Mrs. Poston was born
on Nov. 1, 1917, at Poole to Herman and Ella (Hadenfelt) Rohde. She attended District 117 School and graduated from Ravenna High School in 1936. She taught for several years at rural schools in the Ravenna area.
She married Richard Poston in 1939 in Long Beach, Calif. The couple lived in Long Beach for nearly 50 years. She moved to Kearney in 1992.
Mrs. Poston was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two sons, Richard of Kearney and David of Cary, Ill.; one daughter, Miriam Poston of Ridgefield, Wash.; five grandchildren; one brother, Robert Rohde of Ravenna; and one sister, Lola Hughes of Ravenna.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Robert Thompson Sr.
ALBION -- Robert L. Thompson Sr., 72, of Albion died Saturday, July 31, 1999, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Omaha.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion. The Rev. Mary Avidano will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Thompson was born
on Oct. 16, 1926, in Albion to James L. and Ora B. (Standerwick) Thompson. He attended elementary school in the Albion area and attended Albion High School.
He entered the U.S. Navy on Jan. 16, 1945, and was discharged on July 18, 1946. Mr. Thompson started working as an auto mechanic in 1946 at the Ford Garage in Albion for Tony Quiter.
He married LoJean Storek on Sept. 4, 1952, at Elkpoint, S.D. Mr. Thompson later formed TNT Motors with Ray Theim. Mr. Theim continued to run the business on his own until retiring in 1996.
Mr. Thompson was a member of the United Church of Christ in Albion. He was also a member of American Legion Post 162 of Albion.
Survivors include two daughters, Janet L. (Mrs. Jerry) Furr of Roseville, Calif., and Terri L. (Mrs. Jeff) Johnson of York; two sons, Robert L. Thompson Jr. of Primrose and James L. Thompson of Kearney; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by one brother, James L. Thompson.
Bertha Burnett
RAPID CITY, S.D. -- Bertha Benedickt Puckett Burnett, 92, of Rapid City, S.D., formerly of Grand Island, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, in Rapid City.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Velma Land
Velma Land, 60, formerly of Palmer, died Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, in Arizona.
Services are pending with Solt Funeral Home in Central City.
