Debra Beth Burgess, 35

(June 1) SCOTTSBLUFF - Debra Beth Burgess, 35, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Regional West Hospital in Scottsbluff.

She was born Sept. 3, 1965, at Alliance. Her parents were Bernard and Ruth (Stevens) Burgess. She resided for 30 years at the Area 2 Human Development Group Home in Scottsbluff.

She is survived by her parents, Bernard and Ruth Burgess of Ashby; and three brothers, Gary Burgess, Bernie Burgess and Dave Burgess.

Miss Burgess' funeral will be 2 p.m., Saturday, June 2, at the Calvary Episcopal Church at Hyannis, with The Reverend Christine Mottl officiating. Burial will be in the Ashby Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice. Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John Charles "Jake" Green

(June 4) ALLIANCE - John Charles "Jake" Green of Alliance died Friday, June 1, 2001, at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born Oct. 7, 1979, in Alliance.

He graduated from Alliance High School in 1998 and was engaged in farming at the time of his death.

He is survived by his father John Green and special friend, Karla Benzel of Alliance; mother Cyndi and husband Rod Rogers of Alliance; sister, Banner Green and her son Alex Steinback of Loveland, Colo.; brother Dustin Rogers of the U.S. Army in Korea; sister Dana Rogers of Norfolk; grandparents, Verna Green of Alliance, Roger and Jerre Richardson of Hay Springs; great-grandmother Dorothy Richardson of Hay Springs; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. His grandfather John L. Green preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 5, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Alliance. Reverend Ed Hunzeker will officiate. The public is invited to an after-funeral gathering of the family at the Alliance Country Club. Memorials may be given to the Jake Green Memorial Young Farmers Scholarship Fund, 1552 CR 54, Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Cody, 84

(June 4) ALLIANCE - Evelyn Cody, 84, died Thursday, May 31, 2001 at Beverly Healthcare at Scottsbluff. She was born August 6, 1916, on a farm northeast of Alliance to James and Minnie (Bauer) Johnston.

The family moved to the Sandhills in her early childhood. She was educated in the Whitman, Ellsworth and Lakeside schools and graduated from Alliance High School. She received her teaching certificate from Chadron Normal School and taught rural schools for six years in Box Butte and Sheridan Counties.

She married John Cody on June 25, 1940, in Chadron. They made their home on their ranch northwest of Lakeside. Evelyn was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, The Golden Age Club, A.A.R.P., Nebraska Cattlewomen, Alliance Eagles Auxiliary, Point of Rock Chapter N.S.D.A.R., Chapter G.C. P.E.O., R.S.V.P., and the Carnegie Arts Center.

Her survivors are her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Steve Blakey of Lakeside, grandson Robb Finegan and wife Joy of Portland, Ore., granddaughter Colleen and husband Rob Hood of Lakeside, and a great-grandson Baily Hood, sisters-in-law, Arlene Johnston and Frances Cody of Alliance, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother, J.B. Johnston.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 6, at the First Presbyterian Church in Alliance. The Reverend Arlys Wilbur and Reverend James Kidd will officiate. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church, Make-A-Wish Foundation, 11926 Arbor Street, Suite 102, Omaha, NE 68144, or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Louise Reyes, 77

(May 31) CRAWFORD - Mary Louise Reyes, 77, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Ponderosa Village in Crawford.

She was born Oct. 9, 1923. Two sons survive her, Jeff Reyes of Crawford and Paul Cisneros of Brandon, Miss.

Mrs. Reyes funeral will be at 10:30 Thursday, May 31, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with Father Loren Pohlmeier officiating. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery at Crawford. Memorials may be made in care of the family, 729 Annin St., Crawford, NE 69339. Chamberlain Chapel of Crawford is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Eileen Gran, 73

(May 30) ALLIANCE - Sister Eileen Gran, 73, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Alliance. Mary Ellen Gran was born July 20, 1927 at Bloomfield, to Elmer W. and Eva May (Parkhurst) Gran.

She professed her religious vows on August 17, 1947. She was a retired Elementary (Montessori) Teacher, having taught in Indian Mission schools in South Dakota, as well as having taught in Nebraska, Colorado, Rome, Italy, and Australia. Her survivors are her sisters and brothers, Carolyn Holsinger of Sidney, Virginia Greenmyer of Leavenworth, Kans., Elizabeth Gran of Denver, Colo., Jim Gran and Willis Gran of Gordon, Eileen Gran of Sidney, and Patricia Mertens of Springfield, Mo., as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, June 4, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance. Father Bryan Ernest will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Wake services will be Sunday, June 3 at 7 p.m. at Marian Residence. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Louise Reyes, 77

(May 30) CRAWFORD - Mary Louise Reyes, 77, died Saturday, May 26, at Ponderosa Village in Crawford.

Elmer R. Treat, 92

(May 29) ALLIANCE - Elmer R. Treat, 92 of Hyannis, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at Crossroads Assisted Living in Alliance. He was born May 17, 1909, at Thedford to Charles and Inez (Hulbert) Treat.

On October 5, 1940, he married Opal Loomis at North Platte. She preceded him in death in 1991. He lived and worked in the Sandhills all of his life. His survivors are his daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Bob Tobin of Portland, Ore.; grandsons, Doug and Don Tobin of Portland, Ore.; granddaughters, Ashley and Cheyenne Tobin of Portland, Ore.; sisters Nina Tognarelli and Ann Wheeler of Salem, Ore.; nephew and wife, Gordon and Edna Anderson of Anselmo; and their children Julie, Ann, Kim, Russ, Doug, Joan and Robin.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, June 1, at Hyannis Cemetery with the Reverend Linda Martin officiating. The family requests casual attire. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Darleen Ostrander, 71

(May 28) CHADRON - Darleen Ostrander, 71, of Chadron died Friday, May 26, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was born June 16, 1929 at Gregory, S.D. Her parents were Glenn and Wilma Soper.

She was married to H.E. "Ozzie" Ostrander on June 20, 1948. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church, Past Honored Queen of the Order of Jobs Daughters, a member of the Chadron Woman's Club, and an active member of the R.S.V.P Volunteer Program.

She is survived by her husband Ozzie Ostrander of Chadron. She also is survived by one brother, Dick Soper of Golden, Colo.

Mrs. Ostrander's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 29 at the United Methodist Church at Chadron, with Rev. K.F. Kaleuati officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

Paul Bussinger, 93

(May 28) NORFOLK - Paul Bussinger, 93, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Park Place Health Care Center at Grand Island. He was born March 31, 1908, at Bassett. His parents were Ernest and Anna (Kapperman) Bussinger.

He married Edith m. Sanger on September 13, 1930, at Burwell. She died in 1997. He is survived by two sons, Gerald Bussinger of Alliance and Marvin Bussinger of Gordon; one daughter Paula Shull of Grand Island; 14 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Rock County Hospital Foundation, Rock County Ambulance Fund, Bassett Volunteer Fire Department or to St. Peter Lutheran Church. Mr. Bussinger's funeral will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 30, at St. Peter Lutheran Church at Bassett, with Pastor Frank Woodall officiating. Interment will be at the Bassett Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Hoch Funeral Home at Bassett from Tuesday until the time of the funeral on Wednesday. Hoch Funeral Home at Bassett is in charge of arrangements.

Clarence H. Ritter, 86

(July 30) ALLIANCE - Clarence H. Ritter, 86, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at his home in Alliance. He was born April 14, 1915 at Ellsworth, NE to Leo and Lottie (Hudson) Ritter.

He graduated from Seneca High School and the Lincoln School of Commerce. He married Pauline Fredrick on December 25, 1937, in Alliance. He began working for the C.B.& Q. Railroad in 1935 and retired as a Conductor/Brakemen from Burlington Northern Railroad in 1975. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and had served as chairman of the U.T.U. His survivors are his wife Pauline; daughters Clarice and Gary Mills of Alliance, Claudia Lichty and her friend Dan Kelly of Elizabeth, Colo., Colleen and Steve Seeley of Alliance; brother and his wife, Robert and Jan Ritter of Round Rock, Texas; grandsons, Tim Mills, Scott Mills, Jeff Mills, Aaron Lichty; granddaughter, Briana Seeley; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 31 at the Alliance Cemetery. The Reverend Mark Schutt of the United Methodist Church will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday until 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The family prefers memorials to the American Diabetes Association for Neuropathy research. Donations may be sent in care of the family at 716 Belmont Street, Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert G. Kutschara, 88

(July 30) RUSHVILLE - Robert G. Kutschara, 88, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at the Chadron Community Hospital. He was born Febr. 13, 1913, sough of Hay Springs. His parents were Carl and Mary (Raddatz) Kutschara.

He attended Sandridge School south of Hay Springs. He married Alma Vybiral Oct. 21, 1936. They lived north of Hay Springs until 1948 when they moved to a farm north of Rushville. Survivors include his wife, Alma of the home; brother, Tony Kutschara of Hay Springs; sister, Edith Campbell of Rogers, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Kutschara's funeral will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 28, at the United Methodist Church of Hay Springs, with Rev. Eric Parker officiating. Burial will be at the Hay Springs Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Rushville Ambulance. Donations may be sent in care of Chamberlain-Drabbels, P.O. Box 443, Hay Springs, NE 69347-0443. Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary of hay Springs is in charge of arrangements.
