Gladys Kanter
ST. PAUL -- Gladys Kanter, 84, of St. Paul died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Palmer. The Rev. Robert Schilling will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Palmer.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Kanter was born
on Dec. 20, 1915, at Waco to Rolla and Evylin (Robson) Mace. At the age of 2, she moved with her family to Sidney. She began her education there. The family then moved back to Central Nebraska, where she finished her education. As a young woman, she worked in a nursing home in Omaha for several years.
She married Glenn Kanter on Sept. 15, 1940, at St. Paul. The couple lived and farmed west of Palmer for 33 years. They moved to a farm south of Worms in 1973. Mr. Kanter died on Nov. 11, 1986. Mrs. Kanter moved to St. Paul in 1987 and entered the Good Samaritan Center at Ravenna in July 1998.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Palmer.
Survivors include one son, Dwight of Greenville, Miss.; two daughters, Frances (Mrs. Wendell) Glinsman of Rockville and Carol Landin of Ravenna; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harold Mace of Central City and Richard Mace of Conway, Ark.
Victoria Conner
ORD -- Victoria M. Conner, 88, of Ord died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Rev. James Murphy will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m., Friday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Conner was born
on Aug. 25, 1911, on the family farm in rural Arcadia to George and Mary (Abel) Greenwalt. She attended school at rural Arcadia. After the eighth grade, she moved with her family to a farm near Ord.
She married George Benda on April 6, 1937, at Ord. The couple lived and farmed near Ord. They moved in 1949 to Omaha, where she worked at Brandeis. Mr. Benda died in 1950. Mrs. Conner returned to Ord.
She married Walter "Buck" Conner on Feb. 12, 1955, at Ord. The couple farmed in the Ord area until 1976, when they moved into Ord. Mr. and Mrs. Conner enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Mr. Conner died on Aug. 19, 1998.
Mrs. Conner moved to the Corner Cottage in Ord in 1998 and had lived at Tiffany Square Care Center since December 1999.
She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, the Altar Society and the Does.
She enjoyed farming, cooking, gardening and flowers.
Survivors include one sister, Frances Gillen of Commerce City, Colo.; and one brother, Lawrence Greenwalt of Grand Island.
In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Walter, Ambrose, Tony, Vernon and an infant brother, James; and three sisters, Eleanor Fulmer, Emily Gallagher and Katherine Turner.
Wilber Ulrey
AURORA -- Wilber LeRoy Ulrey, 79, of Aurora died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Aurora Cemetery. Jerry Bady will officiate.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mr. Ulrey was born
on Jan. 18, 1921, at Elkhart, Kan., to Arthur Bradley and Nora Ellen (Forbes) Ulrey. His family moved from Elkhart to Brewster, Kan., when he was 4 years old. He attended school in Brewster. He later moved to Colby, Kan.
Mr. Ulrey was not able to work because of a disability and poor health. His family later moved to LaSalle, Colo., where he lived with his mother until her death. He moved to Aurora in 1987 to live with his brother Elmer and his wife, Lucille. He moved to Hamilton Manor in September 1996.
He was a member of the Stolley Park Church of Christ in Grand Island.
Survivors include three sisters, DeLoy Way of Evans, Colo., Marie Brock of Arvada, Colo., and Myrtle Koder of Brighton, Colo.; and one brother, Russell of Aguanga, Calif.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Lois Gardner; and three brothers, Hubert, Arthur and Elmer.
Margie Dorf
WILBER -- Margie Genevieve Dorf, 90, of Wilber, formerly of Albion, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at the Wilber Care Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Albion. The Rev. Terry Otto will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Albion.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Mrs. Dorf was born
on Dec. 19, 1909, on a farm west of Albion to Charles G. and Winifred A. (Henderson) Ayers. Her mother died in childbirth, and her maternal grandparents, John and Alwilda Henderson, adopted her and gave her the name of Margie Henderson. She was raised by her grandparents and her aunt Jessie (Henderson) Keeshan. She attended Albion city schools, graduating from Albion High School in 1929.
Mrs. Dorf was an accomplished seamstress. Even in grade school, she sewed some of her own clothes. After high school graduation, she worked at Pittengers Clothing in Albion, where she learned altering and tailoring. She also worked at Sillik's Ready to Wear Shop in Albion.
She married Dewey Dorf on March 7, 1935, and they moved onto the Henderson farm southeast of Albion.
Mr. Dorf's health began to fail in 1962, so they moved into Albion, where she did sewing and altering in her home for several years. She later made many Palm Loom rugs. Her husband died on Feb. 22, 1973.
Church attendance and Bible study were of great importance to her, and she was a member of the United Methodist Church in Albion for more than 50 years.
When her health began to fail in the summer of 1993, she moved to Shady Rest, an assisted-living facility in Lincoln. She had lived at the Wilber Care Center since July 1996.
She is survived by one daughter, Marilyn Dorf of Lincoln.
William Rogers
CARSON CITY, Nev. -- William Guy Rogers, 70, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at his home near Carson City, Nev.
Cremation will be under the direction of Capitol City Cremation and Burial Society. His family will scatter his ashes at a private ceremony.
Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Hospice in Carson City.
Mr. Rogers was born
on Sept. 28, 1929, at Fort Missoula, Mont., to Noel "Jack" and Bertie (Willis) Rogers. He attended schools in Billings, Mont., graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1948 and attended Montana State University.
He entered the U.S. Navy in 1950. He was discharged in 1954 and returned to Billings, where he worked at various jobs including 17 years with the Yellowstone County Department of Motor Vehicles. He moved to Carson City, Nev., in 1976.
He married LuElla Carstenson in 1977.
Mr. Rogers worked at Frontier Travel and Tours until 1993. After his retirement, he was a seasonal, part-time employee with the Indian Hills General Improvement District Parks and Streets Department.
He was very fond of his cat, Pilgrim.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Rick and Darrel Rogers of Huntley, Mont.; two daughters, Louise (Mrs. Bill) Quirk of Sacramento, Calif., and Susan Carlson of Sheperd, Mont.; a stepdaughter, Linda (Mrs. Jerry) Hurst of Incline Village, Nev.; a stepson, Danny Dubbs of Grand Island; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and one brother, Harvey of Lakeside, Mont.
Irene Purdy
Irene Purdy, 89, of Grand Island died Friday, July 23, 1999, at Tiffany Square Care Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Gollaher Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Delvin Roper will officiate. Burial will be in the Phillips Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Grand Island Woman's Club or Stuhr Museum.
Mrs. Purdy was born
on July 26, 1909, near Phillips in Hamilton County to George M. and Frances (Guilford) Falmlen. She grew up and was educated in the Phillips community. She graduated from Phillips High School in 1928.
She married Raymond G. Purdy at Phillips on June 20, 1929. The lived on a farm near Phillips until moving to Grand Island in 1934.
Mrs. Purdy was a member of the first class of state-licensed licensed practical nurses in Hall County and donated many volunteer hours to the Red Cross during World War II. Before she retired in 1971, she was an office nurse for Dr. Campbell and Dr. Mongeau.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the YWCA, Liederkranz and Eagles. She was a former member of the Grand Island Woman's Club, Shriners Marathon and the Colonial Club. She enjoyed traveling, playing cards and volunteer work.
Survivors include a son, Ronald of Grand Island; a daughter, Marlene Goos of Omaha; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Her husband died on May 4, 1976. She also was preceded in death by a brother, George M. Falmlen III; and two sisters, Theresa Eaton and Dorothy Golay.
Darlene Weber
Darlene P. Weber, 78, of Grand Island died Friday, July 23, 1999, at her home.
Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Survivors include a son, Howard Morgan of Waipahu, Hawaii; three daughters, Jean (Mrs. Dan) Britt of Columbus, Carol (Mrs. Wayne) Caley of Andrews, Ind., and Sheri (Mrs. Smoke) Bergholz of Grand Island; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Gladys Fiske of Broken Bow and Pearl Frei of Madison.
She was preceded in death by a son, Chuck, and her husband, Vernon, in 1997.
Ivan Forsman
AURORA -- Ivan Forsman, 89, of Aurora died Friday, July 23, 1999, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Pleasant View Bible Church in Aurora. The Rev. Barry McCormick will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Higby Mortuary.
Memorials will be directed to several special mission projects.
Mr. Forsman was born
to Gustaf and Kristin (Zavgren) Forsman in a sod house in Loup City on March 11, 1910. He attended school through the eighth grade in the Loup City and Aurora areas. When he was 17, he went to study music at the Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis for two years.
He married Allene Rath on June 1, 1941, in Eldorado, Neb. Together they farmed in the Monroe Precinct in Hamilton County. Following retirement, they moved to Aurora.
Mr. Forsman was a member of the Monroe Evangelical Free Church, where he directed the choir and men's chorus for 35 years. He attended Pleasant View Bible Church in Aurora. In his retirement, he continued to enjoy music, gardening and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Dr. Richard Forsman of Omaha and Kent Forsman of Aurora; one daughter, Dr. Patricia (Dr. Paul) Bunger of Yankton, S.D.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Bertha Forsman, Elsa Gustafson and Alice Forsman.
