Delma 'Dee' Nielsen
AURORA ‹ Delma "Dee" Nielsen, 85, of Aurora died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Presbyterian UCC Church in Aurora, with the Rev. Cathy Allen officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Fredericksburg Lutheran Cemetery in Minden. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Higby Mortuary.
David Thompson
ALDA ‹ David A. Thompson, 67, of Alda died Saturday, July 17, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home, with the Rev. Scott Jones officiating.
Burial will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Arcadia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family's choice.
Mr. Thompson was born
Nov. 24, 1931, to Clifford and Grace (Kearns) Thompson at Mullen. He graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1951.
In 1953 he entered the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. While on active duty, he received three Bronze Stars and was honorably discharged in 1954.
On July 21, 1957 he married Betty C. Anderson in Wiessert.
Mr. Thompson was a heavy equipment operator for 10 years and then worked as a truck driver for Beatrice Foods (Meadow Gold) for 13 years. He later worked for Wards Transport as a truck driver.
He was a Rock Hound and a member of the Kearney Rock Club and the Grand Island Earth Science Society. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 4677 of Alda and Wood River. He was also a member of the Eagles and Third City Christian Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, rock hunting and camping. He also had his own shop at T&S Unlimited in Alda, where he did leather working and silver smithing.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Allen Thompson of Alda and Buddy Thompson of Wood River; two daughters, Corena Thompson and Donna Thompson, both of Grand Island; four grandchildren; one brother, Herbert Thompson of Broken Bow; and one sister, Marilyn Vinnedge, of Oakland City, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Tommy Dean Thompson.
Edward Manning
Edward F. Manning, 86, of Grand Island died Monday, July 17, 2000, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Leo's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, Thursday at the church.
Kleine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Vance Jeffres
BURWELL -- Vance Ernest Jeffres, 70, of Burwell died Monday, July 17, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burwell. Cremation will follow. The Rev. Bernard Berger will officiate. A private family burial will be at a later date.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the Burwell Community Fund.
Grace Kunze
CENTRAL CITY -- Grace L. Kunze, 90, of Central City, formerly of Palmer, died Monday, July 17, 2000, at IHS in Central City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Palmer. The Rev. Robert Schilling will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Palmer's Funeral Home in Palmer.
Mrs. Kunze was born
on June 16, 1910, in Howard County to Lauritz and Flora (Nielsen) Feddersen. She grew up in Howard County and graduated from Dannebrog High School and Kearney State College. She attended Nebraska Christian College at Central City.
She married Theodore Kunze on Oct. 13, 1934, in Howard County. They farmed in Howard County for several years. She taught at Elba, Cushing, District 36 School at Palmer and Gage Valley. She retired in the mid-1970s. She moved to Bader Villa in Central City in 1985 and lived at IHS in Central City for the last seven years.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Retired Teachers Association. She was a 4-H leader for several years.
Survivors include two sons, Warren of St. Paul and Willard of Palmer; four daughters, Selma (Mrs. Earl) Ferguson of Nelson, Margaret Hansen of Brayton, Iowa, Lavon (Mrs. Chris) Wunderlich of Higley, Ariz., and Liana (Mrs. Jim) Spitz of Duncan; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Florence Christensen of Dannebrog and Marie Gdanitz of Elba.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Daryl; five brothers, Sigurd, Christian, Ernest, Vernon and Howard; and two sisters, Astrid Christensen and Thyra Toof.
Florence McKnight
KINGMAN, Ariz. -- Florence McKnight, 93, of Kingman, Ariz., formerly of Cairo and Shelton, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. McKnight was cremated, and her remains will be buried at a later date in the Shelton Cemetery.
Mrs. McKnight was born
on April 9, 1907, near Cairo to Jerome and Lillie (Shoopman) Reed. She graduated from Cairo High School in 1925.
She married Archie McKnight in June 1927, and they lived in Shelton for a number of years. She worked for the U.S. Navy Department for many years.
Survivors include one granddaughter; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Agnes (Mrs. Maurice) Wickersham of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Donna McKnight and Deanna Kephart; two brothers; and two sisters.
Mike Scism
HOUSTON -- Mike Scism, 59, of Houston died of cancer Thursday, July 13, 2000, at Houston.
He was cremated. Memorial services will be at a later date.
Mr. Scism was born
on March 12, 1941, at Edgar to Al and Enid "Betty" (Overturf) Scism. He graduated from Edgar Public High School in 1958. He received a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1966.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1961.
He married Doris Linnebar on June 18, 1971, in Houston.
He had worked at Eagleton Engineering in Houston since 1981. He spent two years in Australia and several months in Russia. He took a five-year sabbatical and worked in the Turks and Caicos Islands in the British West Indies. He was a registered professional engineer in Texas.
He served as an expert in carbines in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Michelle Scism and Stephanie Dobson, both of St. Paul, Minn.; his father, of Deweese; two brothers, Garth "Tom" Scism of Kearney and Anthony Scism of Aurora; and three sisters, Cheryl McWaters and Mary Kulhanek, both of Kearney, and Karen Anderson of Alma.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Irvin Hermsmeyer
Irvin C. Hermsmeyer, 86, formerly of Scotia, died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Scotia. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery near Scotia.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the church, the Scotia Rescue Unit or Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island.
Mr. Hermsmeyer was born
on Dec. 9, 1913, in Scotia to Conrad and Ollie (Schulz) Hermsmeyer. He attended school in Scotia and later farmed in the area.
He married Gertrude Duncan on Aug. 20, 1941, in Wilcox. The couple lived on the family farm until retiring and moving into Scotia in November 1984. Mr. Hermsmeyer moved to Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island on March 31, 1995.
He enjoyed restoring old cars, repairing clocks and making apple cider in a cider press he restored.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Scotia.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Mary Savage of Grand Island; two grandsons; one brother, Melvin of California; and one sister, Esther Knosp of California.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul; and two sisters, Edna Leibli and Mabel Fossberg.

Edward F. Manning, 86, of Grand Island died suddenly Monday, July 17, 2000, at his home.
Services are pending with Kleine Funeral Home.
Lillian Mattke
Lillian Rose Mattke, 88, of Grand Island died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at Tiffany Square Care Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Leo's Catholic Church. The Rev. Jack Rademacher will officiate.
Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Central Catholic Foundation.

Johnny Weinert
Johnny Weinert, 83, of Grand Island died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center following cardiac arrest.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Revs. Don Larmore and Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, Tuesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family or to the donor's choice.
