William Erickson, 43

(July 30) NEW LONDON, N.Y. - William Erickson, 43, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at his home in rural New London. He was born Aug. 26, 1957 at Gulfprot, Miss. His parents were William Allan and JoAnn Darlene (Ronding) Erickson.

He grew up at Hermantown, Minn., where attended grade school and graduated from high school in 1975. He lived in Duluty until 1979. He married RaiAnn May Seeley May 9, 1981, at Pike Lake, Minn. They lived in Alliance until 1997 when they moved to New London. He was an engineer for Burlington Northern for 21 years. He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles at Willmar. He is survived by his wife, RaiAnn, three daughters, Christine Wiegand of Crawford, Amanda Erickson and Kimberly Erickson both at home. He also is survived by his parents William and JoAnn Wiegand of Waskish, Minn.; two brothers, Kevin Erickson and Glenn Erickson of Duluth, Minn.; and one sister, Twila Uotinen of Superior, Wis.

Mr. Erickson's funeral will be at noon, Monday, July 30, at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church.

Lucille M. "Jane" Johnson, 91

(July 28) LINCOLN - Lucille M. "Jane" Johnson, 91, former Alliance resident, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Lincoln. Her parents were Charles and Effie Mae Martin.

She was married to Martin D. Johnson. Mr. Johnson preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Miller High School and then earned her teaching certificate from Kearney State College. She was the former owner/operator of Grocery Store in Alliance. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, and an avid Husker fan. She is survived by her daughter Jean Krull of Lincoln, son Larry Johnson of Omaha, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her brother Kenneth Martin of Brookings, Ore., and sister Jessie Showaker of Concord, Calif.

Mrs. Johnson's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at Brutherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home in Lincoln. Memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth Hospice, Suite 111, 245 South 84th St., Lincoln, NE 68510, or The Family of Lucille Johnson, in care of Jean Krull, 7521 Steinway Rd., Lincoln, NE 68505.

Debrah E. Watt, 82

(July 27) ALLIANCE - Debrah E. Watt, 82, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff She was born June 9, 1919, at Bridgeport, NE to Ralph and Margerite (Adams) Welton.

On November 12, 1944, she was married to Robert W. Watt at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Alliance. She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, St. Matthew's Guild, and an Altar Guild Directress. Her survivors include her husband, Robert of Alliance, and son Ralph of Paris, France.

Memorial services will be Wednesday, at 2 p.m., August 15 at St. Matthew's Church with Father Paul Mottl officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Matthewâs Chapel Columbarium. Memorials may be given to the church. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Alexander Sanchez, 53

(July 27) LOVELAND, Colo. - Alexander Sanchez, 53, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at his home at Loveland. He was born July 9, 1948, at Alliance. His parents were Esteban and Macaria (Mendez) Sanchez.

He married Ruth Perez Aug. 23, 1969 at Alliance. He had worked as a hostler for Burlington Northern Railroad, and was a self-employed carpenter at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife Ruth of Alliance; son Jason (Lynette) Sanchez of Loveland; and three grandchildren. He also is survived by his father Esteban "Steve" Sanchez and mother Macaria (Lester) Mart of Alliance; brothers Esteban Sanchez, Jr., John (Marjorie) Sanchez, Felipe (Jayne) Sanchez, and Dan Sanchez, all of Alliance; two sisters, Rosa (Don) Vasquez of Alliance and Gloria (Rafael) Vallejo of Garland, Texas; and half-sisters Debbie May, Monica Sanchez and Stephanie Sanchez of Alliance, and Juanita (Maged) Sanchez-Ismail of Lincoln.

A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, July 30, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 31, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Foundation.

Leila I. Gordon, 90

(Feb. 1) DENVER, Colo. - Leila I. Gordon, 90, died January 30, 2002, at Denver. She was born June 8, 1911, at Bridgewater, Iowa.

She was married to Glenn Gordon Jan. 1, 1931, at Alliance. Her survivors include son Milton D. Gordon of Phoenix, Ariz., and daughter Shirley M. Leverett of Arvada, Colo.; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Her husband and her son Ronald E. Gordon preceded her in death.

Graveside services will be at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Alliance Cemetery with the Reverend Christine Mottl officiating. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mabel A. Hamaker, 81

(Jan. 30) ALLIANCE - Mabel Adareen Hamaker, 81, of Alliance died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born Sep. 23, 1920 in Marsland.

Her parents were Jessie (Leavitt) and Louis. She was married to Casey Hamaker in 1946. She was an avid piano player of honkey-tonk music. She played by ear and played for dances for years in Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming. She also competed in several music contests and took several first place awards. She is survived by her daughters, Gladys Morrison of Kansas City, Mo., and Connie and husband Joe Grote of Lewellen; grandchildren, Jack Morrison, Jr. and wife Sherrie of Omaha, Lori Morrison Murphy and husband Barrie of Portland, Ore., Brad Grote and wife Kay of Morrill, Cory Grote of Cromwell, Okla., and Nicole Grote Grider and husband Zane of Shawnee, Okla.; great-grandchildren, Megan MaKenna, Ryan Murphy and Jay, Holly and Riley Grote, Lainee and Laycin Grider; She also is also survived by her sister, Grace Leetch of Marsland and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Glen, L.A. "Ardell" and E.G. "Ernie", and sisters Pearl Daugherty and May Powell.

Mrs. Hamaker's memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at the Hemingford United Methodist Church in Hemingford with Rev. Craig Collins officiating. At her request, her body was bequeathed to the Nebraska Anatomical Board in Omaha. Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff is in charge of arrangements.

Fred C. McFall, 89

(Jan. 30) ALLIANCE - Fred C. McFall, 89, died Jan. 28, 2002, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center at Alliance. He was born Oct. 22, 1912, at Alliance to Lee and Virgie (Allen) McFall where he grew up and received his education.

He married Esther Schonard on Nov. 22, 1933, at Bridgeport. He lived in and around Alliance all of his life, ranching until 1963. He did private trucking until 1967, at which time he became a Field Inspector for the Guardian State Bank. He retired from the bank Dec. 31, 1978. He loved his work at the bank because it gave him an opportunity to meet and work with all his lifelong friends. After his retirement, he and Esther spent their winters in Arizona with other Nebraska "Snowbirds." He is survived by his wife Esther; son and daughter-in-law Mike and Pat McFall of Tallahassee, Fla; daughter-in-law, Connie McFall of Alliance; grandchildren, Michael McFall, Patrick McFall, Scott McFall, Juli Long, Jami Hack and Jill Harris; and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Richard, and brothers Herb and Harry.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 2 at the First Christian Church with the Reverend Walter Cline officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Good Samaritan Health Care Center, First Christian Church or to Prairie Haven Hospice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Helen K. Ewing, 90

(Jan. 29) ALLIANCE - Helen K. Ewing, 90, died Sunday, January 27, 2002, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born August 26, 1911 at Presho, S.D. to Elvis and Anna (Weinandy) Cadle.

She married Perl A. Ewing June 2, 1934, at Bridgeport. She is survived by her brothers, Henry Cadle of Alliance, Harold Cadle of Cannon Beach, Ore., and Frank Cadle of Parma, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one sister, Hazel Pauley.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 30, at the Alliance Cemetery, with Rev. Dan Floyd officiating. Memorials may be given to the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Glen L. Merriman, 67

(Jan. 29) SMITHVILLE, Okla. - Glen L. Merriman, 67, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at his home. He was born Sept. 28, 1934, at Shadehill, S.D.

He lived at Lead and Spearfish, S.D., while he worked for Homestake Gold Mine; Sturgis, S.D., when he worked at Brown Swiss Creamery and at Rapid City, S.D., where he worked in construction. He then lived at Hemingford before moving to Texas and to Oklahoma. He is survived by his wife, Geri of Smithville; daughters Cindy Wilson of Douglas, Wyo., and Glenda Merriman of Rapid City; sons Darol Merriman of Whittman, Ariz., and Todd Merriman of Rapid City; and four grandchildren. He also is survived by two step-sons, Jim and Jeff; two step-daughters, Jacque and Julie; brothers, Donald Merriman of Shadehill, S.D., and Roger Merriman of Pierre, S.D.; and sisters Lucille Lutz of Spearfish, S.D., Marvelyn Braaten of Locust Grove, Okla., and Elizabeth Walker of Bowman, N.D.

Burial will be at Smithville.

Marvin C. Yardley, 83

(Jan. 29) HEMINGFORD - Marvin C. Yardley, 83, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Hemingford Community Care Center. He was born April 16, 1918 in Sullivan County, Mo. to Clyde and Verle (Hill) Yardley.

His family moved to Hemingford in 1928. He graduated from Hemingford High School and attended Chillicothe Business School in Missouri. On Oct. 6, 1940, he married Elva Fortune in Hemingford. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. After his discharge he returned to Hemingford and worked as a postal clerk in the Hemingford Post Office for 30 years until his retirement in 1972. After his retirement he drove the school bus and continued carrying mail on the Dunlap for six years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 9 where he served as finance officer for several years and as past commander and the Hemingford Golf Association. He also was a retired member of the Hemingford Volunteer Fire Department. At the age of 66 He completed a flying course and received his private pilot's license. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Marvin Kent and Jackie Yardley of Germany; Steve and Loleta Yardley of West Virginia; Laura and Dennis Hinchley of Eaton, Colo.; Jim and Mary Yardley and Jane and Marty Kuhn of Hemingford;13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one sister Reva Osborn of Norwalk, Conn. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and brother Theron Yardley.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan.y 31, at the United Methodist Church in Hemingford, with Rev. Craig Collins officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery with military rites. Memorials may be given to the Hemingford Community Care Center. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Velma B. Engelhaupt, 90

(Jan. 28) ALLIANCE - Velma B. Engelhaupt, 90, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born March 8, 1911, at Denver, Colo. to Alex and Anna (Solberg) Lee.

She graduated from Alliance High School and attended the Chadron State Teaching College. She was married to Richard A. Engelhaupt June 5, 1935, at Alliance. She was a schoolteacher in her early years and later worked at her husband's business. She volunteered for many years in several community organizations and was a long time cooking chairwoman at the Eagles Club at Alliance. She served several times as the President of the local Eagles Auxiliary and as the State President in 1961. She was honored as the Eagle Organization's State Mother of the Year in the mid 1970's. She also was recognized as the Woman of the Year for the state Aksarben organization in the mid 1980's. She was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She was also a long time member of the Alliance Rural Woman's Club, the Happy Homemakers Extension, and the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. In recent years she enjoyed traveling to many places with local tour groups. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and many good friends. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Jan Engelhaupt of Leawood, Kan.; Dean and Yvette Engelhaupt of Grand Island; and Dale and Terry Engelhaupt of Gering; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Richard, and two brothers, Gerald and Donald Lee.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Fr. Vince Parsons officiating. A wake service will be at 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 28, at the church. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Eagles Auxiliary Alzheimer's Fund in care of Edna Gies at, 324 Cheyenne, Alliance, NE, 69301; or the St. Agnes Foundation at 1104 Cheyenne, Alliance. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
