Donald Floro
SIDNEY -- Donald Floro, 62, died at his home in Sidney on Saturday, June 17, 2000, after a long struggle with ALS.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Lodgepole. Father Lyle Martin will officiate. The burial will be at 3 p.m. at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell with military honors.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Holchek Funeral Home in Sidney.
Memorials are suggested to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Holechek funeral home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Floro was born
Dec. 31, 1937 at the family home in Curtis to Frank and Laura (Morgan) Floro. He was educated in Curtis and at the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture, graduating in 1955.
He married his high school sweetheart, Wilma Adkinson, on May 28, 1955, in Benkelman. Mr. Floro served in the Air Force from 1955 to 1959, then received his bachelor's degree from Kearney State College and his masters degree from Chadron State College. He taught school and coached football and basketball for eight years.
Mr. Floro took early retirement from work in Colorado and returned to Sidney in 1995. He worked as a substitute teacher in local schools.
Mr. Floro enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and Nebraska football.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma of Sidney; four daughters, Beth (Mrs. Mark) Falla of Imperial, Cindy (Mrs. David) Rilling of Littleton, Colo., Kim (Mrs. Brad) Kenny of Grand Island, and Susan Fillinger of Aurora, Colo.; a son, Donald Jr. of Eatontown, N.J.; 12 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and three sisters, Dorothy Gudgel of Grand Island, Betty Soto of Arroyo Grande, Calif., and Vera Shirley of Phillips.
Mr. Floro was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one sister.
Floyd Kissel
NORTH PLATTE -- Lloyd J. Kissel, 79, of North Platte, died Friday, June 16, 2000, at Great Plains Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery with full military honors.
Memorials are suggested to the Great Plains Medical Center Hospice, the American Heart Association or the America Diabetes Association.
Mr. Kissel was born
Feb. 19, 1921, at Stockham to Lloyd C. and Susie Housel Kissel. After graduating from Harvard High School in 1939, Mr. Kissel lived in California for two years before returning to Nebraska. Mr. Kissel served as a staff sergeant in the United States Army.
He hired out on the UPRR in 1943 at Grand Island, lived there until 1973 moving to North Platte and was elected local chairman, vice president and president of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. He was a member of the United Transportation union for 57 years. On May 28, 1983, he retired as a conductor.
He was a 66-year member of the United Methodist church and also a member of the American Legion Post No. 163 of the American Legion, Union Pacific Oldtimers Club and AARP.
On Feb. 3, 1941, he married Dorothy Singer of Stockton, Calif. They lived in North Platte for 27 years and wintered in Mesa, Ariz., for the early years of their retirement.
Mr. Kissel enjoyed raising dogs, hunting, fishing, rose gardening and Nebraska football.
Survivors include his wife; thee daughters, Jerre (Mrs. Mearl) Plunkett and Jeanne (Mrs. Leroy) Cook of St. Joseph, Mo. and Debra Kissel of Omaha; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Thelma and two brothers, Don and Glen.
Robert Aurand
Louisville, Colo. -- Robert A. Aurand, 90, of Louisville, Colo., died on June 12, 2000, in Boulder, Colo.
After cremation, memorial services were on Thursday at the Presbyterian Church in Boulder.
Mr. Aurand was born
on Oct. 5, 1909, in Central City to Lora H. and Nell (Adair) Aurand of Chapman. He spent his youth in Chapman and graduated from high school there in 1928. He attended Baptist College in Grand Island and later graduated from the University of Colorado with an engineering degree.
He then went to work for Consolidated Aircraft Co. in San Diego. During World War II, he was sent to Scotland as a representative for the B-14 aircraft.
He married Moira Lind on June 5, 1943, in Symington, Scotland. After the war, he moved to Boulder, was a restaurateur for 19 years and was past president of the Colorado-Wyoming Restaurant Association.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Rusty Aurand of Vancouver, Wash., Rick Aurand of Owaso, Okla., Bob Aurand of Louisville and Richard Aurand of Grand Junction, Colo.; two daughters, Robyn Haskett of Greeley, Colo., and Rhonda Baumert of Broomfield, Colo.; two sisters, Margaret Eversoll of Grand Island, his twin, Isabel Bemis of Brawley, Calif.; and a brother, Bruce Aurand of Chapman.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Aurand of San Diego.
Irene Cook
ST. PAUL -- Irene M. Cook, 88, of St. Paul died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul with the Rev. Kenneth Christensen officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested at the donor's choice.
Helen McIntosh
PALMER -- Helen McIntosh, 76, of Palmer, died Saturday, June 17, at the St. Francis Medical Center from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Services will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Michael McDermott will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Fullerton.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with a 7 p.m. vigil service.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. McIntosh was born
on March 21, 1924, on the family farm near St. Edward to Ignacy and Olga (Rosno) Gdowski. She attended St. Edward public school and graduated from St. Edward High School in 1942. She received a teaching degree from Wayne State College and taught at rural schools near St. Edward for several years.
She married Deward D. McIntosh on Oct. 4, 1948, in St. Edward. The couple farmed in the area of St. Edward and Genoa until 1955 when they moved to a farm near Fullerton. They moved to a farm south of Palmer in 1960 where they continued to live until the time of her death.
She enjoyed reading, sewing and her flower garden.
She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of St. Paul and its council of Catholic Women; American Legion Auxiliary of Palmer; an Extension Club; the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Grand Island; Tops and Kops; and was a 4-H leader for many years.
Survivors include her husband; four sons, Deward of North Platte, Terry of Palmer, William of St. Paul and Rickie of Grand Island; two daughters, Jody Nelson of Mead and Dixie McIntosh of Omaha; 25 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Clara Zurovsky of Albion and Frances Huff of Ventura, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Sandra McIntosh; two grandsons; and one sister, Mary Schifferns.
Vernon Brammeier
SYRACUSE -- Vernon E. Brammeier, 79, of Syracuse died Saturday, June 17, at the Good Samaritan Center in Syracuse.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. John's United Church of Christ in Syracuse. The Rev. Ian McLean will officiate. Burial will be in Park Hill Cemetery in Syracuse.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Fusselman-Wymore-Marshall Funeral Home in Syracuse. Military rites by the Mid-Otoe County VFW will be performed.
Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Center or St. John's United Church of Christ.
Mr. Brammeier was born
July 29, 1922, in rural Syracuse to Arthur and Clara (Lornez) Brammeier. He served with the Army in the Pacific Theater in World War II and then returned to Nebraska as a farmer.
He also lived in Stockton, Mo., Cook and Lincoln.
He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ and the Mid-Otoe County VFW.
Survivors included his brother, Lorenez Brammeier of Cook; and one sister, Ruth McWilliams of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Nellie Gould
Burial of the ashes of Nellie Gould, 92, of 412 N. White will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Arcadia Cemetery.
Mrs. Gould died May 2, 2000, at her home in Grand Island.
Mrs. Gould was born
Aug. 26, 1907, at Arcadia to Dan and Belle (Hughes) Thompson. She grew up at Arcadia and graduated from school there. She received her teaching degree from Kearney State College in 1929.
She married William Beams in 1929. They lived in Ord until 1932, when they moved to Arcadia. She was a telephone operator there.
She married Howard Gould on Jan. 24, 1952, at Central City. They lived in Grand Island. Mrs. Gould was a telephone operator and desk clerk at the Yancey Hotel in Grand Island for 18 years.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was active in the Foster Grandparents at Connell and Gates School.
Survivors include a son, Floyd Beams of Blacksburg, Va.; three daughters, Gwendolyn Keldsen and Belle (Mrs. Oscar) Burt, both of Lincoln and Brenda Cummings of Grand Island; three stepsons, Don and Calvin Gould, both of Arcadia, and Earl Dean Gould of Kearney; 22 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1971; a son, James Beams; a stepson, Dale Gould; two grandsons; and two brothers, Clarence and Virgil.
Michael Kirkpatrick
Michael Eugene Kirkpatrick, 45, of Grand Island died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Gretchen Diers will officiate. Burial will be in the Phillips Cemetery.
Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Kirkpatrick was born
Feb. 14, 1955, to Eugene and Joan (Roggy) Kirkpatrick at Grand Island. He grew up in Grand Island, receiving his education at District 3, Cedar Hollow and graduating from Northwest High School in 1973.
He married Karen Hodgson on Jan. 18, 1980, at Mandan, N.D. The couple lived in Glen Ullin, N.D. before moving to Grand Island in 1983.
He was employed by Davis Erection Co. from Omaha. He served his apprenticeship in Ironworkers Local 793 in North Dakota. He was a member of Ironworkers Local 21 of Omaha for 15 years. He helped to erect the Great Platte River Road Archway near Kearney, and he worked on various churches.
He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and trapper. He also was a member of Prairie Creek Coon Hunters Association and the Grand Island Sheriff's Posse.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kerrie Lea Kirkpatrick, and Valerie Lynn Kirkpatrick at home; his parents, Eugene and Joann Kirkpatrick of Grand Island; his in-laws, Dean and Bonnie Hodgson of Grand Island; a brother, Steven Kirkpatrick of Grand Island; a sister, Jennifer Herman of Cairo; and a grandmother, LaVerne Maynard of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Eugene Michael.
