'Pete' Peterson

George W. "Pete" Peterson, 79, of 2203 S. August, died at his home on Wednesday, June 14, 2000.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Leo's Catholic Church. The Rev. Jack Rademacher will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. There will be a 7 p.m. wake service at the church.

Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Mr. Peterson was born icon May 21, 1921, at Spalding to August M. and Ina Pearl (Dallegge) Peterson. He grew up in Spalding and graduated from high school in 1939.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served from October 1943 until his discharge in November 1946.

He married Ella Mae Clark on Sept. 25, 1947, at O'Neill. They moved to Columbus where Mr. Peterson began his employment with Texaco. They came to Grand island in 1951. and he retired from Texaco as the bulk plant manager in 1978. He then was employed by Poland Oil until 1985.

Mr. Peterson was a member of St. Leo's Parish and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 378.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, John J. of Memphis, Tenn., Thomas of Hastings, Robert M. of Grand Island, Bill of Kansas City, Kan., and Scott E. of Grand Island; four daughters, Donna M. Otte, Sharon K. (Mrs. Steven) Yenny, Catherine (Mrs. Leo) Tylkowski and Mary (Mrs. Steven) Mettenbrink, all of Grand Island; 28 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Marion of Columbus; and one sister, Helen Marie Ramm of Stuart.

George Stanek

George A. Stanek, 89, of Grand Island, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at Tiffany Square Care Center of Grand Island.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island. The Rev. Tim Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family receiving friends from 5-6 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Hospice or to Tiffany Square Nursing Home.

Mr. Stanek was born icon Feb. 12, 1911, at Chicago, Ill., to Frank and Anthonia (Sojka) Stanek. In his youth the family moved to Amelia where the family ranched. He then left the family ranch in order to work in construction.

He enlisted and entered the service on Feb. 21, 1944, and was discharged on June 29, 1945. Upon his return from the service he located in Grand Island where he was employed by Platte Valley Construction and he was involved in farming and land leveling. He later became a partner in Platte Valley Construction.

He married Viola Schaaf on Feb. 16, 1952, at Kearney. After their marriage the couple lived in Grand Island where they remained until his retirement in 1966. They then moved to Reno, Nev., until returning to Grand Island due to declining health. Mrs. Stanek preceded him in death in 1986.

Survivors include a stepson, Emil Schaaf of Grand Island; a sister, Eleanor Mohr of Amelia; five stepgrandchildren; nine step great-grandchildren; and one step great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a stepson, Jack Schaaf; two brothers; and one sister.

Donovan Gift

BROKEN BOW -- Donovan Lewis Gift, 95, of Broken Bow, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Custer Center Cemetery near Broken Bow. The Rev. Cliff Reynolds will officiate.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

A memorial has been established to Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

Mr. Gift was born icon Sept. 17, 1904, west of Broken Bow to Lewis and Lula Belle (Russom) Gift. He attended the Belle School west of Gates. After his schooling he farmed with his father in the Lillian, Comstock and Sargent areas in Custer County.

On June 28, 1927, he married Margaret Schroeder at Broken Bow. They farmed in the Lillian, Sargent and Comstock areas before retiring and moving to Comstock. They then moved to Broken Bow and lived at Regency Place, later moving to Sandhills Manor Nursing Home. Mrs. Gift died in January 2000.

Mr. Gift enjoyed coyote hunting.

Survivors include one son, Darrell of Wisconsin.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Maxine Keilig

RAVENNA -- Maxine Keilig, 81, of Ravenna, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Steven Schlund will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery in Ravenna. Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.

She was born icon March 6, 1919, in Buffalo County to Earnest and Friede (Bedke) Keilig. She was a graduate of Ravenna High School and Kearney State College.

She served in the U.S. Navy. She taught high school in San Diego, Calif.

She was a member of the Lutheran Church.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister.

Lamont Kimble

HASTINGS -- Lamont Kimble, 86, of Hastings, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are pending at Palmer's Funeral Home in Fullerton.

Emma Poehler

CAIRO -- Emma Poehler, 97, of Cairo, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at her home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Christ Lutheran Church in Cairo. The Rev. Glen Keylon will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery at Cairo.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Christ Lutheran Church in Cairo.

Memorials are suggested to Christ Lutheran Church, Lutheran Hour Ministries or Cairo Quick Response.

Apfel Funeral Home of Cairo is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Poehler was born icon Nov. 13, 1902, at St. Libory to Herman and Bertha (Tuenge) Kruse. She attended Zion Lutheran Parochial School at Worms.

She lived at home and worked and sewed for people until her marriage to Fred Poehler at Zion Lutheran Church at Worms on April 15, 1928. The couple lived on a farm southeast of Cairo.

Mr. Poehler died March 17, 1945. She continued to live on the farm until 1964 when she moved to the present home in Cairo.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid and Lutheran Womens Missionary League.

Survivors include one daughter, Elvera (Mrs. Donald) Rohweder of Wood River; one son, Ray Poehler of Cairo; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; three brothers, John Kruse of Westminster, Colo. and Walter and Rinehardt Kruse, both of Grand Island; and one sister, Erna Pohlman of Pocatello, Idaho.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by one son, John; one daughter, Dorothy; two brothers; and seven sisters.

Robert Scott

BROKEN BOW -- Robert P. Scott, 89, of Broken Bow, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. Stanley Morrison will officiate. Burial will be in the Dry Valley Cemetery in Custer County.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Scott was born icon June 18, 1910, in the Dry Valley community in Custer County to Samuel LeRoy and Mary Edna (Wooters) Scott. He attended Dry Valley Country School.

On Feb. 5, 1937, he married Edith Pearl James in Burwell. They farmed in various places, one of which was the Cummings Park area northwest of Sargent. They later moved to Kellerton, Iowa. They returned to Broken Bow approximately 12 years ago.

Survivors include his wife; two sisters, Avis (Mrs. Michael) Guggenmos of Ogallala and Guyneth (Mrs. Lysle) Orvis of Broken Bow; and one brother, Sam Scott of Broken Bow.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Eben; and two sisters, Erma and Elaine.

Agnes Smidt

HASTINGS -- Agnes Smidt, 88, of Hastings died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The Rev. Harold D. Stromer will officiate. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home.

Mrs. Smidt was born icon Oct. 27, 1915, at Harvard to Edward C. and Clara T. (Zimmerman) Genschmer. She graduated from Harvard high School and married Elmer Smidt in 1937.

Mrs. Smidt moved to Hastings in 1957. She was a homemaker and a member of the First St. Paul's Lutheran church, West Blue Extension Club and 4 C Club.

Survivors include two sisters, Violet Chatterson of Ravenna and Lenora Plum of Hastings; a son, Dale Smidt of Wood River; a daughter, Carol Thompson of Hastings; and nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, one sister and one granddaughter.

Arlys Ritter

KEARNEY -- Arlys E. Ritter, 72, of Kearney died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at her home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Kearney. The Revs. Ron Roemmich and Bill Ritter will officiate. Burial will be at the Pleasanton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney.

Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church in Kearney, the United Methodist Church of Pleasanton and the Kearney Senior Hospitality Center.

Mrs. Ritter was born icon May 23, 1928, at rural Pleasanton to Charles and Anna (Zimmer) Rubart. Adolph Hadwiger became her step-father in 1932. She attended school in Pleasanton and graduated from Pleasanton High School in 1945.

She married A. Dale Ritter on March 14, 1947, in Kearney. They farmed south of Pleasanton. After retirement in 1992, they moved to Kearney. Mr. Ritter died Dec. 15, 1998.

She enjoyed golfing, gardening, cooking, sewing and playing cards.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the church circle, S.P.I.C.E. support group and two card clubs: Jolly Times Senior Cards and Sunflower Kensington. She also was an active volunteer at the Senior Hospitality Center in Kearney.

Survivors include her son, Curt of Pleasanton; four daughters, Diana Stubbs and Lisa Phillips of Pleasanton, Ronda Schulte of Baldwin City, Kan., and Kristine Bower of Kearney; two sisters, Marilyn Unick of Litchfield and Barbara Dauel of Pleasanton; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant brother; and a daughter, Donna Lee.

Ethel Howell

Ethel M. Howell, 77, of Lakeview Nursing Center, formerly of Centennial Towers, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services are pending with Kleine Funeral Home.
