Randall Metcalf
PLEASANTON - Randall Metcalf, 46, of Pleasanton died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at his residence.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney. The Rev. Dean Hanson will officiate. Mr. Metcalf was cremated.
Memorials are suggested to Grace Lutheran Church of Pleasanton.
Mr. Metcalf was born
May 16, 1954, in Grand Island to Neil and Marilyn (Asher) Metcalf. He attended school in Castle Rock, Colo., graduating from Douglas County High School. He worked as a truck driver in Castle Rock and was married to Pam Ramsour there on May 26, 1978. He moved to Pleasanton in 1987.
Metcalf was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Pleasanton. He was also a member of the Teamsters Union.
Survivors include father and stepmother, Neil and Sandi Metcalf, two daughters, Noelle and Lacie, all of Castle Rock, Colo.; his stepfather, Gene Schwab of Pleasanton; one sister, Kim Parker of Littleton, Colo.; two stepsisters, Regan Varrone of Colorado Springs and Erinn Mallett of Aurora, Colo.; and his grandmother, Vera Asher of Kearney.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Edith Rojohn
ALBION -- Edith Rojohn, 94, of Albion, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. The Rev. Larry Sydow will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Albion.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Frank Slangal
SARGENT -- Frank J. Slangal, 85, of Sargent died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Jenny Melham Hospital in Broken Bow.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Ord Cemetery. The Rev. Bernard Berger will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Rhoad Funeral Home in Sargent.
Mr. Slangal was born
June 18, 1914, in Ord to Frank and Mary (Mares) Slangal. They moved to Sand Flats until he was 3 years old. Then he moved southwest of Sargent. Then they moved northwest of Sargent where he attended Zion Hills School through the eighth grade. He stayed home and farmed with his parents for a number of years.
In 1966 he married Lovella Jones. In 1971 they purchased a ranch at Rose. He retired and moved back to Sargent in 1988. He fell and broke a shoulder and entered the Sargent Hospital. He returned home under the care of his nephew Eldon Slangal. In 1996 he entered the Sargent Hospital under long term care. In 1997 he went to the Sargent Nursing Center.
He had a special interest in horses. He was a past member of the Elks and the Sargent Fire Department.
Survivors include three nephews, Stanley and Eldon Slangal of Sargent and Victor Klapal of Colorado Springs, Colo.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Stanley and one sister, Mamie Klapal.
William Marsh III
OMAHA -- William Harrison "Bill" Marsh III, 79, of Omaha, formerly of Grand Island, died Friday, June 9, 2000, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Omaha.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Cedar View Cemetery in Doniphan. The Rev. Kenneth L. McClain will officiate. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Central Nebraska Humane Society or the Doniphan Cemetery Association.
Mr. Marsh was born
Oct. 17, 1920, at Doniphan to Earl A. and Mabel (Neumayer) Marsh. He grew up in Doniphan where he went to the first grade in the old Doniphan school.
He moved with his parents Medford, Ore. He and his mother returned to Nebraska in 1936, and he graduated from Doniphan in 1939.
He was a career soldier, enlisting Sept. 18, 1940. While in the Army he took seven college courses. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver and Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart with two Clusters, along with three Commendation Medals. He retired Jan. 31, 1963.
In February 1963 he went to Germany, where he lived for 30 years. Shortly after his arrival in Germany he went to work as a heavy truck driver, tractor and trailer. He held a German Class Two license, which allowed him to drive anything up to 100 tons. He drove all over Europe into Asia, and he drove in all the countries with Iron Curtains before The Wall came down. He also drove twice into Chad, North Africa.
He married Karla H. Heinze in Manheim, Germany. She died in 1966.
He then married Anna Marie Schulmann in Bremerhaven, Germany. She died in 1971.
He met Elfriede Diekmann in 1972. She was his common-law wife, dying in Germany within hours of his death.
He returned to the United States for health reasons. He lived in the Grand Island Veterans Home because he had lost much of his sight.
He was a member of the Doniphan United Methodist Church, the Liederkranz and the V.F.W.
Survivors include a stepson, Norman T. Marsh of Berlin, and one granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by two wives, an infant son and a special friend, Elfriede Dickmann.
Amelia Hueneke
Amelia Hueneke, 97, of Grand Island died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Lakeview Nursing/Rehab Center of Grand Island.
Mrs. Hueneke was cremated, and there will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held at a later date. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Trinity United Methodist Church or to the Grand Island Eagles Auxiliary No. 378.
Mrs. Hueneke was born
Oct. 10, 1902, at Doniphan to Edward C. and Minnie (Neubert) Boltz.
She married Louis C. Hueneke on Sept. 17, 1924, at Grand Island. Following their marriage the couple lived in Chapman and Grand Island, where she was a housewife.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years and a 45-year member of the local Eagles Auxiliary No. 378. She was also a member of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Dick of Portland, Ore., and Duane of Lakewood, Colo.; one daughter, Bonnie (Mrs. Don) Etherton of Grand Island; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis "Pete" Hueneke, in 1984; three brothers; four sisters; and one great-granddaughter.
Genieve Rayno
Genieve Rayno, 93, of Grand Island died Monday, June 12, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services are pending at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Catherine Shaver
Catherine M. "Grandmother" Shaver, 86, of Grand Island died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island. The Rev. Lonnie Logan will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with family receiving friends during that time at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Francis Oncology Unit.
Mrs. Shaver was born
May 4, 1914, at Grand Island to George and Nancy (Monroe) Humphrey. She attended school in Grand Island, graduating with the class of 1932.
She married William H. Shaver on July 12, 1933, in Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island, where they were among the original Kuester Lake residents, and they were charter members of the Grand Island Saddle Club. They owned and operated Shaver's Wholesale Meats. As owner/bookkeeper of Shaver's Meats, Mrs. Shaver received numerous sales awards for outstanding sales achievement in selling Armour Co. meat products. Later, the couple owned and operated the Koehler Tavern in Grand Island.
She was a member of Congregational Church and was a life member of PTA, having served as the state PTA president and president at Platte School PTA for many years. She was a member of Platte Duetsche, Liederkranz and the Eagles. She was active in Does, American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary, and she served as president for all three groups. As an active American Legion Auxiliary member, she participated in war bond drives during World War II and coordinated Poppy Day Sales events to commemorate veterans.
She donated time to reading to blind veterans at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She chaired March of Dimes fund-raisers for many years and was involved in Ak-Sar-Ben outstate membership committee. For many years, she was a leader for Boy and Girl Scouts. She raised funds for numerous charities including cancer fund drives, the Red Cross and the Salvation Army (bell ringer). She was also involved in the passage of local school bonds and voter registration. Her hobbies include sewing, travel, writing, cooking and crossword puzzles.
Survivors include three daughters, Nancy Starr of Anaheim, Calif., Julianne Newlun of Republican City and Roberta L. Filkins of Alda; one son, Thomas J. Shaver of Grand Island; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Marine Corps Lt. Col. William C. Shaver; one great-grandson; two brothers, Maynard and Leslie Humphrey; and a sister, Edith Wendt.
John Whyte
John T. Whyte Jr., 73, of Grand Island died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a 7 p.m. rosary and wake at the church.
Memorials are suggested to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, or the YMCA "Y" Heart Program.

Rena Giddings
BROKEN BOW -- Rena L. Giddings, 77, of Broken Bow died Saturday, June 10, 2000, in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Cliff Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be at Lee Park Cemetery. Govier Brothers Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Disabled American Veterans.
Mrs. Giddings was born
Jan. 18, 1923, at Gowrie, Iowa to Victor and Hulda (Johnson) Larson. She grew up in Iowa and graduated from high school in Harcourt, Iowa.
On Aug. 5, 1943, she married Delbert Giddings at the First Christian Church in Broken Bow. They lived on a farm five miles east of Westerville. Mr. Giddings died Feb. 8, 1973, and she moved to Broken Bow. Mrs. Giddings worked for Becton Dickinson in Broken Bow for 18 years until retiring.
She attended the Methodist Church and was a member of the BD Alumni Association. She loved to read and study archeology and natural history.
Survivors include a son, Leroy Giddings of Broken Bow; three daughters, Roma (Mrs. Jim) Porter of Broken Bow, Della Giddings of Broken Bow and Darla Drake of Ainsworth; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ellen Bjorklund of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Daisy Lindstrom of Rush City, Minn.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters and one daughter, Lily Caldwell.
Mary Houdek
CENTRAL CITY -- Mary A. Houdek, 96, of Central City died Monday, June 12, 2000, at Integrated Health Services in Central City.
Services are pending with Solt Funeral Home in Central City.
