John Kaiser, 71

(Jan. 28) CHEYENNE - John Kaiser, 71, former Alliance resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Cheyenne, Wyo. He was born in Alliance and moved to Cheyenne with his parents. After graduation from high school, he became an employee with Burlington Northern until his retirement. Survivors include two sisters, Irene Homerighausen of Alliance and Freda Bessey of Sparks, Nev. There will be a private family service.

John Schneider, 78

(Jan. 28) ALLIANCE - John Eugene "Gene" Schneider, 78, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, while visiting his granddaughter. He was born April 21, 1943, in Eldorado, Olka. His parents were Harold George and Emma Almeida (Yates) Schneider.

He was stationed at Alliance, in the Army Airborne Division, and later worked as a parts man for Mandelberg's, then at the Chevrolet dealership. He married Lola Maxine Christie Jan. 13, 1945, at Denver, Colo. He was a member of first Christian Church, and an active member in the Eagle's, VFW, AARP and Senior Center. He is survived by one daughter, Connie Schneider (Stark) and Vern Wirsch of Salt Lake City, Utah; Ronald Schneider of Alliance; grandchildren, Shannon Stark, and Shawn and Sherice (Stark) Wilkerson; and foster grandson, Anthony Green. He also is survived by one sister-in-law, Neva Sisley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lola C. Schneider, mother and father, and five brothers as well as two sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, Don Sisley, husband of Neva.

Mr. Schneider's memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, at the First Christian Church.

Edith Margaret Smith, 89

(Jan. 28) ALLIANCE - Edith Margaret Smith, 89, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Highland Park Care Center. She was born Nov. 19, 1912, at Denton to Johann Marinus Nikolaj "John" and Elise Hansine (Stenberg) Nielsen.

The family moved to Alliance in 1918. While in high school she was active in 4-H, with a special interest in horticulture. After graduating from Alliance High School in 1930, she spent a number of years working on the family farm and helping her mother with the home. She met Alvin Winfield Smith, a paratrooper stationed at the Alliance Airbase, and they were married May 15, 1943. After he returned from Europe, the couple had two more children and built a home in Alliance. Edith stayed at home to raise the children and tend her flowers. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church's Womens Circle, the Toastmistress Club and Immanuel Lutheran Church. After her children had grown, Edith became her husband's assistant in his carpentry business. She is survived by a son, Willard A. Smith of Boulder, Colo.; a daughter and her husband, Karen J. and Ed Trickler of Alliance; one granddaughter and her husband, Vannesa J. (Graves) and Kris Fritzsche of Denver, Colo.; and one great-grandson, Benjamin Fritzsche. She also is survived by two sisters, Esther Von Bargen of Alliance and Gladys and her husband Mearl Solberg of Loveland, Colo.; and brother-in-law and his wife, Roy and Sue Boyer of Greenburg, Kan. She was preceded in death by her husband; and infant son; her parents; a brother Chris Nielsen; and two sisters Louise Boyer and Mary Donovan.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alliance with Reverend Richard C. Mueller officiating. Inurnment will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Highland Park Care Center, P.O. Box 950, Alliance, NE 69301 or to Prairie Haven Hospice, P.O. Box 21, Alliance. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dale R. Kimble, 25

(April 1) WAUNETA - Dale Richard "D.R." Kimble, 25, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at his home. He was born Feb. 17, 1977, at Gordon Memorial Hospital. His parents were Jack and Debbie Kimble.

He grew up on family ranches in northern Nebraska. He lived in South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa before returning to Nebraska. He boarded with Jay and Jackie Fanning and son Josh, during his high school years at Benkelman. He graduated from Dundy County High School in 1996. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on Oct. 4, 1999, and received an honorable discharge shortly afterward due to health problems. He is survived by his father, Jack Kimble, formerly of Gordon; his mother Debbie Miner of Gordon; one brother Jay of Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.; three sisters, Mindy (Jeff) Powell of Parks, Melissa (Luke) Snyder of Imperial and Mandy Kimble of Pittsburg, Kan.; four nephews, three nieces; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He also is survived by his grandparents Wynona Kimble and Dick and Arlene Minor of Gordon. He was preceded in death by his grandfather Dale Kimble. He loved the sandhills, cattle and horses, especially working with young horses. At the time of his death he was employed at the Jack Maddux Ranch near Wauneta.

His funeral was Thursday, March 28, at the United Church of Christ at Hyannis. Burial was in the Hyannis Cemetery. Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Kathleen E. Ross, 96

(April 1) ALLIANCE - Kathleen E. Ross, 96, died Saturday, March 30, 2002 at Box Butte General Hospital. She was born March 21, 1906, at Big Piney, Mo. to Rufus M. and Amanda J. (Buckner) Wood.

In November 1928, she was married to Jewell A. Ross. They moved to Hemingford that year living there for a couple of years before returning to Missouri. In 1948 they moved to Alliance where she has resided since. She was a charter member of Plato Missouri Chapter of Eastern Star and was active in the First Baptist Church and Burlington Vets. Her survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and John Matz of Columbus; grandchildren Johanna Matz of Fort Collins, Colo., Julianna Matz of Taos, N.M.; and great-grandson John Esquibel of Taos, N.M. Her parents, husband, 1 sister, 2 brothers and son Maurice Ross preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 2, at the Bates-Gould Chapel with the Rev. Jim Rowe officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Nebraska Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 639, Alliance, NE 69301; or to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 700, Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lee Nason, 48

(June 3) ALLIANCE - Lee Nason, 48, of Alliance died early Saturday morning, June 1, 2002, at his home in the comfort of his loving family. He was born Aug. 18, 1953, in Alliance to Melvin and Helen Nason.

He married Sandy Callan of Alliance in 1970 and began working for Burlington Northern in 1973. Then in 1987, he was remarried to Joyce Nesiba of Ravenna, Neb. His loving wife Joyce Nason of Alliance survives him. His daughter Carri and son-in-law Jay Redmond of Rapid City, S.D.; and sons Josh Nason of Green Bay, Wis., and Eric Nesiba of Kearney, Neb. Also survived by sister Peggy and brother-in-law Randy Peters of Cody, Wyoming; sister Barb Nason of Omaha, Neb., brother Dan and sister-in-law Kathy Garrett of Chadron, Neb.; sister Cheri and brother-in-law Vern Harold of Wichita, Kan.; sister Deanna and brother-in-law Jim Darveau of Alliance; brother Chuck Nason of West Palm Beach, Fla.; sister Brenda Stauffer of Lincoln, Neb.; brother Roger and sister-in-law Dee Nason of Alliance; and sister Robyn and brother-in-law John Prochazka of Hemingford, Neb. He is also survived by three grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and friends. Lee is preceded in death by his father Melvin Nason and mothers Helen and Doris Nason. Through Lee's battle with cancer he maintained a wonderful sense of humor and undeniable compassion for others. Lee's greatest loves were the simple pleasures in life; being with family and friends, hunting on the Niobrara River, catching the "big" fish at the surrounding lakes, gardening, working in his shop, and most of all being on the farm with his caring wife Joyce and dog TilIey. Lee's charismatic personality and inspiring attitude will forever be remembered in our hearts.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Father Bryan Ernest will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Prairie Haven Hospice, Holy Rosary Church or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Alyha Marie Rinard, 1

(June 3) ALLIANCE - Alyha Marie Rinard, 13 months, died Thursday, May 30, 2002 at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance. She was born April 27, 2001, in Alliance to Michael and Rebecca (Ebers) Rinard Jr.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her brother Zachary and sister Joyce, grandparents, Michael and Melody Rinard Sr. of Alliance, Doug and Lagina Ebers of Alliance, Barbara and Steve Thompson of Three Rivers, Minn., Wilma Rinard of Colorado Springs, Colo., great-grandparents, Elden Lewis of Alliance, Iva Ebers of Lincoln, William and Mabel Rinard of Denver and Rose Marie Johnson of Belleville, Kan., Aunts and uncles, Martin Rinard, Heidi and Shane Rasmussen, Jessie Ebers, Dan and Nathaniel Ebers, Elizabeth and Casey Ebers, Joseph Griffith, Robert Ebers and Jerry Ebers, and numerous cousins also survive her. She was preceded in death by great-grandparents, Richard Johnson, Paul Ebers, Joyce Lewis, great aunt Patricia Griffith and aunt Amy (Lochman) Griffith.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, at the Bates-Gould Chapel with the Reverend Walter Cline officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given in care of the family at 1042 Dakota Ave., Alliance. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elanora B. Maiefski, 90

(June 3) OGALLALA - Elanora Berniece Maiefski, 90, former Box Butte County resident, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at Sutherland Care Center. She was born Jan. 2, 1912, at Farwell. Her parents were Louis and Bessie Kremlacek Jehorek.

She was raised on a farm southwest of Ogallala, and attended Ogallala High School. She was married to Robert R. Maiefski on Feb. 11, 1929, at Ogallala, where the couple resided until 1946 when they moved to Hemingford. Mr. Maiefski died in 1985. She worked in a grocery store, and later as a nurse's aide at Hemingford Nursing Home and St. Joseph's Hospital in Alliance. Upon retirement in 1968, the couple moved to Ogallala where she worked as a nurse's aide at Ogallala Hospital and Indian Hills Manor. In 1997, she moved to Buffalo Bill Manor in North Platte; and in January 2002, moved to Sutherland Care Center. She is survived by four daughters, Dorothy Swanson of Hemingford, Rosemary Sauer of Ogallala, and Virginia Snodgrass and Cathleen Albrecht, both of North Platte; her son, Romaine Maeifski of Oceanside, Calif; 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Maeifski's funeral was at 10 a.m. today, June 3, at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Ogallala, with Father John Schlaf officiating. Burial was in Ogallala Cemetery. Memorials may be made in her memory. Draucker Funeral Home of Ogallala was in charge of arrangements.

Gideon T. Holzwarth, 75

(July 29) FREEMAN, S.D. - Gideon Theodore Holzwarth, 75 years, 11 months and 25 days, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at the Freeman Community Nursing Home. He was born on July 30, 1926, at Freeman to Emanuel and Martha (Nehlhaff) Holzwarth.

He was baptized Oct. 10, 1926, by Rev. Buettell in the Reformed Faith. He was confirmed by Rev. William Korn in Johannesthal Reformed Church. He completed eight years of school in the Mutschelknaus Country School District 68. On June 2, 1950, he married Velda Huether of Tripp, S.D. They lived their married life farming west of Freeman until he became ill in February 2002. He always enjoyed his animals with a special love for horses. He had a great love for music. He enjoyed going on bus tours with his wife, Velda. They especially enjoyed a tour through Europe in the fall of 1998. He always enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and was very proud of his four grandchildren. He was a lifelong member of Zion Reformed Church where he had served as an elder and deacon for many years, and 42 years as church and choir organist. He and his cousins played as the Red Hat Band. He is survived by his wife, Velda of Freeman; two sons, marlin (Patty) Holzwarth of Freeman and Myron (Audrey) Holzwarth of Lennox, S.D.; one daughter, Marlene (Brad) Stewart of Alliance; four grandchildren, Matthew and Kevin Holzwarth and Jamie and Sean Stewart. He also is survived by one sister, Arlene (Vern) Johnson of Rapid City, S.D.; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother-in-law and three nieces.

Mr. Holzwarth's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 29, at Zion Reformed Church, Menno, S.D., with Revs. Robert Grossmann and Herman Van Stedum officiating. Pallbearers will be Matthew, Kevin and Todd Holzwarth, Glenn Vogel, William Schoenfish, Michael, Dennis and Kevin Huether. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery. Kostel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Linda M. Nelson, 94

(July 25) ALLIANCE - Linda Margaret Nelson died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at her home. She was born March 22, 1908 at Creighton. Her parents were John and Mary (Hoffart) Hoferer.

She attended schools in Knox County and later completed her studies in practical nursing. She practiced nursing at Alliance until her retirement. She was confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church at Creighton and remained a faithful member of this faith as an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church. She also was active in the Garden Club and Quilting Club at Alliance. She was skilled in the art of cooking and many of her friends enjoyed the dishes she prepared. She corresponded with many relatives and friends throughout her lifetime. She was an ardent reader of the Bible and loved to talk about God and faithfulness. She is survived by two brothers, John Hoferer of Bloomfield and Clarence Hoferer of Billings, Mont.; sister, Elsie Carlson of Creighton; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Irma Pahl, Laura Kabah and Florence Schroeder, and brother, Harry Hoferer.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, July 26, at the Greenwood Cemetery at Creighton, with Rev. Kent Bryant officiating. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 27, at St. John's Lutheran Church. Brockhaus Funeral Home of Creighton is in charge of arrangements.

Betty L. Zeller, 72

(Oct. 9) VERNAL, Utah - Betty Lorene Zeller, age 72, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Uintah Care Center in Vernal, Utah. She was born May 16, 1930, to Daniel Gilbert Mart and Nellie Mae Thompson in Hemingford, Nebraska.

She was the youngest of seven children. She was married to Robert Morris Zeller on Jan. 12, 1949, in Alliance, Neb. She was employed for 20 years by the State of Utah in the Social Services Department as a case worker. She was a member of the Business Professional Women, Vernal Chamber of Commerce, Ladies Aide, Good Sam's RV Club and Dinah Sam's Chapter II. She enjoyed crocheting, crafts, knitting, camping, and spending the holidays with her family. She is survived by her husband; Robert Morris Zeller, her two sons, Robert T. Zeller and Ronald D. Zeller, and her daughter Carolyn Mann all of Vernal; five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. She also is survived by her sisters; Helen Hawley of Alliance and Doris Withers of Mercede, Calif; and her brother, Lester Mart of Alliance.

Mrs. Zeller's funeral was ayt 11 a.m. today, Oct. 9, at Thomson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary, Vernal, Utah. Burial will be in the Maeser Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Thomson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetes Foundation.

Elmer D. Squibb, 71

(Oct. 9) HEMINGFORD - Elmer D. Squibb, 71, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at Bryan LGH East Hospital in Lincoln, Neb. He was born April 8, 1931, west of Hemingford to Charles and Bertha (Rickell) Squibb.

He received his education at Rural District No. 14 and Hemingford Public School. He married Barbara Gable on May 15, 1955. Survivors include three children, Elmer, Debra and Edwin and several grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Ellen Nielsen and his sister-in-law, Mary Lou Squibb, both of Alliance. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and an uncle also survive him. His parents and his brother, Leonard, preceded him in death.

Graveside services will be held Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at 3 p.m. at the Hemingford Cemetery with Pastor Richard Mueller officiating. Memorials may be given to the Immanuel Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Virginia Foster, 88

(Oct. 9) HASTINGS - Virginia Foster, 88, former Alliance resident, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Perkins Pavillion. She was born Oct. 20, 1913, at Hutchinson, Kan. Her parents were William Noah and Lydia (Montgomery) Sidinger.

She graduated from Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson Junior College and Kansas State University with a B.S. in Journalism. She was married to Dr. Neil C. Gustafson on Aug. 30, 1940. Dr. Gustafson died in the mid-1960s. She was married to John B. Foster on July 8, 1967. The couple moved to Alliance for 11 years where she organized a four-county genealogical society and began a home-based business in genealogical supplies, traveling as a vendor to workshops in seven states. She also was the editor of Family Records Association Journal for nine years. Mr. Foster died in April 1999. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and the First Presbyterian Church of Hastings, and served on the National Board of First Mates. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Lyons of Grand Island; her sons, Stephen C. Gustafson of Peoria, Ill., and Mark M. Gustafson of Tempe, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Mrs. Foster's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at First Presbyterian Church in Hastings, with Dr. Carl W. Utley officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. Visitation will be until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday, and 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Hastings. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
