Weslee Mitten

LAWRENCE -- Weslee Dean Mitten, 35, of Lawrence, formerly of Grand Island and Omaha, died at his home Tuesday, June 6, 2000.

Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Merten-Butler Mortuary in Blue Hill. Further memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Heafy West Center Chapel at 7805 W. Center Road in Omaha.

Survivors include his wife, Kimberly; a stepdaughter, Kristina; his mother, Donna of Omaha; father and stepmother, Merlyn "Tom" and Ada of Kansas City, Mo.; and a sister, Denise (Mrs. David) Jackson of Omaha.

Ruth Cummings

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Ruth Eva Cummings, 102, of San Diego, Calif., formerly of Grand Island, died Monday, May 29, 2000, in San Diego.

Burial was in the Phillips Cemetery near Grand Island.

Mrs. Cummings was born icon Aug. 16, 1897, in Grand Island to Charles and Henrietta (Spiker) Herron in Grand Island.

She married Walter M. Cummings in 1917. He died in 1961. They owned the Cummings Garage and Service Station on Locust located between the Yancey and Stratton Hotels and the Grand Island newspaper was next to her business.

She was the first woman to ride in a biplane in Grand Island. She loved to fish and hunt pheasants, play bridge, dance and drive her maroon Cadillac. Her grandfather was Billy Spiker, the second sheriff of Grand Island.

Survivors include one daughter, Maxine C. Sullivan of Portland, Ore.; one son, Ralph of San Diego; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

'Garrett' Bruns

CENTRAL CITY -- Gerhard "Garrett" Edward Bruns, 87, of Central City, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Zion United Methodist Church near Archer. The Rev. Henrietta Stemley will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Mr. Bruns was born icon Sept. 16, 1912, at the farm home north of Chapman to William H. and Johanna E. (Seim) Bruns.

On June 12, 1940, he married Evelyn Mae Scharvin in Archer. They farmed and fed cattle in the Archer area. Mrs. Bruns died Sept. 4, 1981. He continued to live on the farm until 1997 when he moved into Merrick Manor in Central City. He then moved to IHS Care in Central City in March 1998.

Mr. Bruns was a lifelong resident of Merrick County and was a member of the Archer Methodist Church until it was destroyed by fire. He then became a member of the Zion United Methodist Church near Archer.

The couple cared for Mrs. Bruns' mother in their home when her health failed. He also served for many years on the Archer Coop Credit Union Board and enjoyed attending auctions at sale barns in the area.

Survivors include one brother, Harvey of Archer and two sisters, Elsie Weller of Central City and Ella Hursh of Wheatridge, Colo.

In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by three brothers, Albert and Edward "Armin" and an infant brother, William Jr. and two sisters, Helen Bader and Hulda Suck.

Lydia Gulzow

HASTINGS -- Lydia Gulzow, 90, of The Kensington at Hastings, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at her home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings. The Revs. Harold D. Stromer, Kathleen Kasper and Howard Franzen will officiate. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery at Hastings.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Butler Volland Funeral Home in Hastings. Further visitation will be one hour prior to service time Saturday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to First St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Hastings.

Mrs. Gulzow was born icon April 7, 1910, in St. Libory to Fritz and Martha (Tuenge) Meinke.

She married Herbert Gulzow on June 16, 1935. Mr. Gulzow died on June 11, 1981. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, women of Evangelical Lutheran Church and former member of Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, UCT Auxiliary and Grandmothers Bowling League.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley (Mrs. Leslie) Harms of Hastings and Marilynn (Mrs. Richard) Addington of Loveland, Colo.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; three brothers, Ervin Meinke and Raymond Meinke, both of Grand Island and Edward Meinke of Omaha; and two sisters, Milda Crabtree of Blue Hill and Myrtle Reimers of Grand Island.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl, Fred and Walter Meinke and a sister, Gertrude Schroeder.

Martha Pruden

ST. EDWARD -- Martha Pruden, 60, of St. Edward died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at her home.

Services are pending with Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward.

'Ernie' Stanczyk

ST. PAUL -- Ernest "Ernie" Stanczyk, 78, of St. Paul, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at his home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic church in St. Paul. The Rev. Michael McDermott will officiate. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery at St. Paul with graveside military honors by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post No. 119 of St. Paul.

There will be no visitation. Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Hospice.

Peters Funeral home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.

Marcella Kircher

Marcella M. Kircher, 73, of Grand Island died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. James Cooper will officiate. Following services, Mrs. Kircher's body will be cremated with burial of the ashes at a later date in the Indianola Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Kircher was born icon on July 22, 1926, at Haigler to Frank and Mary Agnes (Vontz) Yager. She grew up and was educated at McCook, graduating from high school in 1944.

She married Roger Kircher on June 20, 1944. After World War II, they lived and farmed at Indianola. They later lived at Saronville, Waverly, Mo., and Marshall, Minn. They also lived at York and retired at Grand Island in 1985.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Rex of York and Gary of Endicott, N.Y.; three daughters, Gloria Stett of McCool Junction, Marcia Dubord of Friend and Julie Cannafax of Kansas City, Kan.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Martin F. Yager of Albuquerque, N.M.

She was preceded in death by one son, Thomas; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert.

Elena Olivo

Elena L. Olivo, 88, of 1622 W. North Front St. died Monday, June 5, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. Jose Chavez will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m., Thursday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.

Mrs. Olivo was born icon on Aug. 7, 1911, at Monterey, Mexico, to Merced and Aurelia (Trejo) Lopez. The family moved to Texas, where she grew up.

She married John G. Olivo in Texas. The family moved to Grand Island in 1954. Mr. Olivo died in May 1979.

Mrs. Olivo was a member of St. Mary's Parish.

Survivors include six sons, Darlo, John, Rudy, Ruben and Alfredo Olivo, all of Grand Island, and Oscar Olivo of Tujunga, Calif.; three daughters, Sandy Rush of Grand Island, Conception "Connie" Ostos of Las Vegas and Mary Garcia of Wood River; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, three grandchildren, two brothers and a sister.

Wilma Kenney

KEARNEY -- Wilma R. Kenney, 92, of Kearney, died Monday, June 5, 2000, at the Mt. Carmel Home where she had been living for the past three years.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney. The Rev. Philip Vreeland will officiate. Burial will be at the Kearney Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Mt. Carmel Home or the First Presbyterian Church in Kearney.

Mrs. Kenney was born icon April 27, 1908, in Miller to Alva and Sadie (Montgomery) Scranton. She grew up and attended school in Miller.

On Nov. 11, 1927, she married P.R. Kenney. They lived in Miller and owned and operated the Kenney Department Store. They moved to Kearney in 1944 and she worked at J.C. Penny's, Schweser's and Ruters before retiring in the 1970's. She lived at Kearney Manor for 15 years until moving to Mt. Carmel in 1997.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Kearney and a past member of the B.P.O. Does. She enjoyed reading and spending the summers at Johnson Lake.

Survivors include three daughters, Beverly Shada, Jackie Shada and Kay Moss, all of Kearney; 10 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988, two brothers and three sisters.

'Jean' Abbott

LINCOLN -- Imogene M. "Jean" Abbott, 74, of Lincoln, formerly of Clarks, died Monday, June 5, 2000, at Tabitha Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Lincoln. The Rev. Daniel J. Safarik will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Lincoln, with family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will resume from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Tabitha or the church.

Mrs. Abbott was born icon on Nov. 3, 1925, at Clarks to Robert and Nannette (Ernst) Spires. She grew up in Clarks, graduating from Clarks High School.

She married Rolland R. "Red" Abbott. The couple lived for many years in Lincoln, where she worked as an accountant for NC Plus Hybrids and was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, where she was a greeter; St. Elizabeth's Regional Medical Center's Volunteer Auxiliary and Sesostris Shrine Temple greeters unit; and a BryanLGH Medical Center 55 Plus Club board member.

She served as a volunteer at St. Elizabeth's Regional Medical Center for more than 25 years.

She was an avid card player.

Survivors include one son, Robert of Sugar Land, Texas; one daughter, Carol (Mrs. August) Neuhaus of Lincoln; four granddaughters; four brothers, Robert Spires of Exeter, Richard Spires of Omaha, Thomas Spires of Clarks and Dennis Spires of McCook; and two sisters, Eileen (Mrs. Corbet) Hansher of Clarks and Beverly (Mrs. Frank) Schuele of Columbus.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother, Franklin Spires.
