Nicholas Hansen
STROMSBURG -- "Nick" Hansen, 82, of Stromsburg died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Midwest Covenant Home Chapel. The Rev. Bob Johnson and Chaplain Dick Bauer will officiate. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.
Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hansen was born
on Aug. 30, 1917, in Chicago to Nicholas Sr. and Olga (Ring) Hansen. He attended school in Chicago and Dwight, Ill.
Mr. Hansen began his career with Servisoft Water Conditioning Co. in Libertyville, Wheeling and Mount Prospect, Ill. He was manager for 25 years and president for 10 years.
He married Norma L. Carlson on May 31, 1941, at Chicago.
Mr. Hansen received the Good Neighbor Award in 1988 and the Ak-Sar-Ben Award in 1989.
His interests included flying and boats.
Survivors include his wife and one son, Ken of Naples, Fla.
Ruby Holcomb
BROKEN BOW -- Ruby Holcomb, 78, of Broken Bow, died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.
Services are pending with Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Edwin Whitten
GIBBON -- Edwin N. Whitten, 56, of rural Gibbon, died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at the VA Medical Center in Omaha.
Services are pending at Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon.
Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Hospice Program.
Paul Dilla
LINCOLN -- Paul Joseph Dilla, 84, of Lincoln, formerly of Grand Island, died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Cathedral of the Risen Christ in Lincoln. The Rev. Robert Tucker will officiate. Burial will be at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home with a rosary at 7 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to Parkinson's Research or Cathedral of the Risen Christ.
Mr. Dilla was born
June 29, 1915, at Ashton to Louis W. and Anna S. (Sobieszczk) Dilla. He was a 1933 graduate of Grand Island Senior High.
He married Vera R. Jones on June 29, 1939, at St. Mary's in Lincoln.
He retired as branch manager for Roberts Dairy.
He was a member of the Cathedral of the Risen Christ.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Craig Dilla of Grand Island; one daughter, Virginia Dilla of Lincoln; two brothers, Clarence of Portland, Ore. and Melvin of Crowley, Texas; two sisters, Luella Trevitt of Schuyler and Mary Ann (Mrs. Ralph) Siddoway of Midvale, Utah.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, David Dilla, a brother, Leonard and a sister, Loretta Wiese.
Helen Garrelts
MINDEN -- Helen Garrelts, 89, of Minden, formerly of Wilcox, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at Kearney County Health Services Hospital in Minden.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wilcox. The Rev. Jeremy Jacoby will officiate. Burial will be in the Wilcox Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Garrelts was born
Sept. 25, 1910, in Hildreth to Henry and Tina (Meints) Bruns. She attended school in the Hildreth area.
She married Falkert Garrelts on April 18, 1938. They lived in the Hildreth-Wilcox area. He died in 1962. She later moved to Axtell, then to Kearney. She moved to the Long Term Care Unit of Kearney County Health Services in 1997.
She worked for many years at Bethphage Mission in Axtell as a cook. She retired in 1987. She enjoyed sewing. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Wilcox and the Ruth Society at the church.
Survivors include three sons, Delmar of Grand Island, Larry of Wichita, Kan., and Gene of Minden; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Emma Bartels of Wilcox and Frieda Johnson of Minden; one half sister, Rosie Nelson of Funk; and two stepbrothers, Rudolph Stratman of Minden and Walter Stratman of Hildreth.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by one half brother and three stepbrothers.
Joel Holbrook
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Joel Michael Holbrook, 33, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Central City, was found dead at his home Tuesday, October 12, 1999, in Kansas City.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Central City. The Rev. Debra Tompsett-Welch will officiate. Inurnment will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the Orchard Hill Cemetery in Orchard.
Solt Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Holbrook was born
Jan. 24, 1966, at Mullen to Harvey J. and Sonia R. (Stevens) Holbrook. He attended school through the third grade at Greeley. The family moved to Central City in 1975 and he graduated from Central City High School in 1984.
In August of 1984, he joined the U.S. Marines. He took basic training at San Diego, Calif. and then attended the military music school in Norfolk, Va. He played trombone in the 2nd Division Marine Band at Camp LeJeune, N.C. for three years.
He also attended the University of Nebraska and was in the university marching band, the concert band and the pep band. While at the university, he performed with the Cornhusker Marching Band at the Orange Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl. He joined the Army Band and served about four years in the 24th Infantry Division Army Band at Fort Stewart, Ga. and in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He later served in the band at Camp Casey near Seoul for more than a year.
Mr. Holbrook had worked for Brandt Excavation Company in Lincoln, the Grand Island Post Office, America's Choice and was working as a corrections officer for Jackson County Jail in Kansas City, Mo. at the time of his death.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the National Guard.
Survivors include his parents, Harvey and Sonia Holbrook of Central City; two sisters, Connie Holbrook of Rochester, Minn. and Kathy Holbrook of Eagan, Minn.; and his maternal grandmother, Tillie Finley of Clearwater.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Raymond Stevens and paternal grandparents, Harvey and Burnetta Holbrook.
Rolland Troester
CLARINDA, Iowa -- Rolland Troester, 76, of Clarinda, Iowa, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at Clarinda Regional Health Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Clarinda. The Rev. Gary Jaeckle will officiate. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda.
Memorials are suggested to St. John's Lutheran Church at Clarinda or the Alzheimer's Foundation.
Mr. Troester was born
Dec. 28, 1922, in Hampton, Neb. to Samuel and Lena Troester.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army.
He married Leona E. Imerman May 2, 1948, at Marion Center Church in Hampton, Iowa.
He owned and operated the Clarinda Bowl from 1963 to 1972, worked at Eaton Corporation in Shenandoah, Iowa from 1972 to 1975, owned the Sheffield Lanes in Sheffield, Iowa from 1975 to 1980, and worked at Eaton Corporation at Belmond, Iowa from 1980 until his retirement.
They returned to Clarinda in August 1994.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Keith of Adel, Iowa and Dennis of Clarinda; three daughters, Janiece (Mrs. Clinton) Vardaman of Braddyville, Iowa, Joyce (Mrs. Joe) Kirchner of Braddyville, Iowa and Diane K. Troester of Woodward, Iowa; six grandchildren; one brother, Russel of Hampton, Neb.; and two sisters, Phyllis Schrader of Hampton, Neb. and Paulette Craig of Salida, Colo.
Kalso Amos
Kalso Floyd Amos, 80, of Grand Island, formerly of Comstock, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Mark Crist will officiate. Burial will be in the Dry Valley Cemetery south of Sargent with military services.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Amos was born
on May 6, 1919, at Comstock to John and Bessie (Brumbaugh) Amos.
He served with the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1943 during World War II.
He married Eula Perkins in May 1945 at Smith Center, Kan. They lived in Comstock until 1947, when they moved to Oregon. He worked in the logging field. They returned to Comstock in 1953 and moved to Carter Lake, Iowa, in 1961. They built homes and did remodeling. They returned to Comstock in 1973. They retired in 1983 and continued to live in Comstock.
Mrs. Amos died in September 1997, and Mr. Amos moved to the Grand Island Veterans Home.
Survivors include one son, Steve Amos of Carter Lake, Iowa; one daughter, Cindy Hall of Melvern, Iowa; five grandchildren; three brothers, Maynard Amos of Camas, Ore., Virgil Amos of Fallon, Nev., and John Amos of Scottsbluff; and four sisters, Becky Marsh of Comstock, Midgie Nelson of Gering and Bonnie Plumb and Arvilla Amos, both of Omaha.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Garley, Carl, Guy, Melford, Pat, Bryce and Gaylord Amos; and two sisters, Evelyn Garris and Sarah Lamprecht.
Margaret Brown
Margaret L. Brown, 74, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. The Rev. John D. Russell will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday at Kleine Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the donor's choice.
Mrs. Brown was born
on July 8, 1925, at Ericson to Joseph and Mary (Ault) Forst. She moved to Grand Island with her parents as a young girl, attended school in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1944. She worked at Rockwell Bowling Alley.
She married Walton "Brownie" Brown on Aug. 13, 1944, at the Grand Island Army Air Base. They lived in Grand Island. She worked at Fairacres Dairy and later for Wolbach's Department Store as a sales clerk. She worked for more than 13 years as a teller at Equitable Building and Loan and then worked for several years at J.M. McDonald's in the mall.
She was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, the Grand Island Woman's Club, Garden Club, Liederkranz, Platt-Duetsche and Saddle Club. She enjoyed playing cards, bowling and American Legion baseball games. She enjoyed shopping every Saturday with her two sisters. She walked daily and was known as the real estate matchmaker.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Alan and Terry, both of Grand Island, and Carroll of St. Libory; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Norma (Mrs. Jim) Merrick of Alda, Mary Helen (Mrs. Paul) DeNoyer of Grand Island and Ina Clark of Wheatridge, Colo.; and one brother, Donald Forst of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Viola; and a brother, George.
