Ruby G. Piatt
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Ruby Grace Piatt, 88, of Englewood, Colo., died Thursday, June 14, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at the First Assembly of God Church of Englewood with interment at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colo. Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary of Littleton, Colo. is in charge of arrangements.

She was born November 14, 1912, to David and Grace (Garwood) Meredith in Lexington. She married Rollie Piatt. She worked as an assembler for a luggage manufacturer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rollie. She is survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Myrtle E. Smith
SIDNEY — Myrtle E. Smith, 90, of Sidney and formerly of the Potter area, died early Saturday morning, June 16, 2001, at the Memorial Health Center in Sidney. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at the Potter United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mary Frohs officiating. Burial will in the Potter Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home in Sidney. Memorial contributions may be made to the Potter Methodist Church or the Potter Fire Department. Holechek Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

She was born north of Potter on July 29, 1910, to Peter and Florence (Herboldsheimer) Nelson. Myrtle married William (Billie) Smith on September 26, 1928, at her parents’ home. They started farming in 1929. In 1942 they bought their own farm north of Potter and this was their home for the next 34 years. In March 1976, they moved to Sidney because of Billie’s failing health and he died June 5, 1976. Billie and Myrtle were parents of six children; Wallace, Douglass, Loran, Barbee, Lester and Karyn.

She was a member of the Potter Methodist Church, the Methodist Women’s Society, Royal Neighbors and was Past Matron of the Potter and Sidney Chapters of the Order of the Eastern Star. She loved to play bingo and enjoyed seeing all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was educated at District 13, a country school and graduated from Potter High School in 1927. She was privileged to attend a great-granddaughter’s high school graduation from Potter 70 years after she had graduated from the same school.

She is survived by her sons Douglas and wife Ardis of Dalton, and Loran of Lake Wales, Fla.; daughter Barbee Harmon of Sidney; daughters-in-law Shirley Smith of Scottsbluff, and Patty Smith of Denver; brother Roy Nelson of Sidney; 24 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and special friend Sherry Richards.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband William Smith; sons Wallace and Lesten; daughter Karyn; daughters-in-law Nadine Smith; son-in-law Bill Harmon; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; two sisters and one brother.

Catherine E. (Sterkel) Riezanstein
SCOTTSBLUFF — Catherine Elizabeth (Sterkel) Riezanstein, 93, of Scottsbluff, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare in Scottsbluff. Funeral Services will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at The Valley Bible Church in Scottsbluff, with Pastor Kurt England officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery here. Memorials may be made to the Valley Bible Church. Friends who wish may call at the funeral home Monday from noon until 8 p.m. and Tuesday at the funeral. Jolliffe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born May 15, 1908, in New Norka, Russia. She came to the United States in 1913 and settled in Minatare. In 1916, the family moved to Bayard. She was confirmed in the Bayard Church of Christ. In 1931, she married David D. Riezanstein at Julesburg, Colorado. They resided in Minatare for a time and later moved to Wheatland, Wyo., where she lived for fourteen years before returning to the valley. She worked 24 years at the Western Cafe in Scottsbluff. She was a member of the Zion Evangelical Church at Scottsbluff.

She is survived by her daughters and sons in law, Mrs. Leo Axt of Himar, Calif.; Delores and Ray Lipps of Casper, Wyo.; Elsie and Dale Ransom of Riverton, Wyo; Ellen Ivey of Las Vegas; Shirley and Gerald Green of Torrington, Wyo; and Sally Taylor of Golden Valley, Ariz.; stepdaughter, Mrs. Vern Meyer of Bayard; stepson, Harry Riezanstein of Scottsbluff; brother, Alex Sterkel of Scottsbluff; 19 Grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter; two sons; one stepdaughter; four sisters; five brothers; and one granddaughter.

Samuel R. Brennaman
MINATARE — Samuel R. Brennaman, 74, of Minatare, died Monday, July 16, 2001, at the Chimney Rock Villa in Bayard. His memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at the Jones Mortuary in Mitchell, with Pastor Dwight Sandoz officiating. At Sam’s request, his remains were cremated. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Nebraska West Diabetes Association, Inc., 1931 1st Ave., Scottsbluff, NE 69361.

He was born June 4, 1927, in Morrill, to Samuel and Lenora (Fullerton) Brennaman. He attended grade school at Morrill and his high school years in Sioux Falls, S.D. He enlisted in the U.S. Army January 26, 1946, and was discharged on July 10, 1947, after serving in Japan. After his discharge, he returned to South Dakota. In 1951, he moved to Indiana and then returned to Scotts Bluff County in 1965, where he resided until his death. He was united in marriage to Frances "Mickey" Kuchera, October 1, 1981, in Torrington, Wyo.

He was raised in the Assembly of God Church and was a member of the American Legion Post #0139 at Minatare.

He is survived by his wife, Frances ""Mickey" Brennaman of Minatare; step-sons, Gary Brennaman of Hartselle, Ala., Arne and Arlen Brennaman, both of Syracuse, Ind.; daughter Sandy K. Holley of Francis, Okla.; step-son Carroll Mohrbutter of Wichita Falls, Texas; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; half-brother Harold Hardesty of Douglas, Wyo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson and step-son.

Dorothy E. Dykes
SCOTTSBLUFF — Dorothy E. Dykes, 75, of Scottsbluff, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at her home. Funeral arrangements are pending at The Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff.

Isidro O. ‘Tilo’ Flores
THURMONT, Md. — Isidro O. "Tilo" Flores, 76, of Thurmont, Md., formerly of Bayard, died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bayard, with Father Christopher Keith and Father Gerald Harr officiating. Interment will be in the Bayard Cemetery. A Vigil service will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bayard. Friends may call at the Bayard Memorial Chapel from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and at the Vigil service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Building Fund, Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the American Heart Association.

He was born February 16, 1925, in Scottsbluff, to Francisco and Cruz de la (Torre) Flores. He was employed by the Morrill County Roads Department for 25 years, the last 12 years as a crew foreman. He and his wife moved to Thurmont, Md., three weeks ago to be near their daughter and to be near a major medical facility for treatment of his medical condition. He was an avid Husker fan.

He is survived by five children, Isidro Flores Jr. and wife Sandi of Olathe, Kan., Sharon Ochoa and husband Margarito of Thurmont, Md., Carlos Flores and wife Linda of Sidney, Steven Flores and wife Linda of Longmont, Colo., and Frank Flores and wife Gloria of Longmont, Colo.; brothers and sisters, Eloisa Vera of Northglenn, Colo., Alice Vera of Las Cruses, N.M., Natalie Vera of El Paso, Texas, Louis Flores of Denver, Colo., and Lupe Flores of Northglenn, Colo.; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; friend Anne Hinman and family of Chadron; and numerous nieces, nephew and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Francisco and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vivian Mae Flores
THURMONT, Md. — Vivian Mae Flores, 77, of Thurmont, Md., formerly of Bayard, died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was born August 20, 1923, in Alda, Neb., to Benjamin and Augusta (Koester) McMaster. She worked for fifteen years as a legal secretary and she ran a tax preparation service out of her home. She and her husband moved to Thurmont, Md., three weeks ago to be near their daughter and to be near a major medical facility for treatment of his medical condition. She was a avid Husker fan.

She is survived by five children, Isidro Flores Jr. and wife Sandi of Olathe, Kan., Sharon Ochoa and husband Margarito of Thurmont, Md., Carlos Flores and wife Linda of Sidney, Steven Flores and wife Linda of Longmont, Colo., and Frank Flores and wife Gloria of Longmont, Colo.; brother Victor McMasters of Spokane, Wash.; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; friend Anne Hinman and family of Chadron; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, John, Marvin, Edwin, Raymond and Leonard.

Berniece Isabell Hull
YAKIMA, Wash. — Berniece Isabell Hull, 82, formerly of rural Bayard, succumbed to cancer Tuesday, July 5, 2001, at her home in Yakima, Wash. She had been and was surrounded by her family, friends and comfort givers at the time of her death. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at the United Methodist Church in Sunnyside, Wash. Burial was at the Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside. Memorial donations may be made to the church or Memorial Home Health Hospice in Yakima. Smith Funeral was in charge of arrangements.

She was the fifth child born to Barney and Mercie Bowers. She was born on December 6, 1918, in Boscobel, Wis. She and her family lived in Wisconsin until 1930 when they moved to the Bayard area. In 1936, she and Earl Hull were married at Sterling, Colo. Together they moved to Orting, Wash., where he worked in the lumber industry and she was a homemaker. In 1939, Berniece and Earl moved to the Yakima Valley. They have been settled there ever since. Sunnyside has been her hometown since 1940. There her two sons, Roger and Howard, were born and raised.

She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Sunnyside, Wash., was a foreign exchange student mother to Kurt Buettner, Red Cross Blood Drawing Volunteer, Cancer Society Volunteer, was a visitor of shut-ins, and was a quiet helper to many in her community.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Earl Hull of Yakima, Wash.; sons, Roger and Howard and their wives; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Harry, Calvin and Lyle; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, John and Charlie, a sister Frieda, and grandchild Cherrie.

Cirilo ‘Joe’ Lopez
MINATARE — Funeral arrangements for Cirilo "Joe" Lopez, 75, of Minatare, who died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at the Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, are pending at the Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff.

Gerald L. ‘Jerry’ Reeves
RUSHVILLE — Gerald L. "Jerry" Reeves, 67, of Rushville, formerly of Whiteclay, died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at Gordon Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at the Chamberlain Mortuary in Rushville, with the Rev. Al Trucano officiating. Burial will be in the Extension Cemetery near Whiteclay. A memorial has been established for Parkview Lodge Assisted Living or Pioneer Manor Nursing Home. Donations may be sent to the Security First Banks in Rushville and Hay Springs. Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on January 14, 1934, in Rushville, to Louis E. and Carrie (Lehman) Reeves. Most recently, he had been a resident of Parkview Lodge Assisted Living. He had also been a resident of Pioneer Manor in Hay Springs. He farmed and ranched near Whiteclay. He loved to hunt and fish, and was a member of the National Rifle Association and Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his mother Carrie Reeves of Whiteclay; brother Moe Reeves of Whiteclay; and sisters, Joyce Dreyer of Rushville, and Hollis Jacquot of Henderson, Nev.

Ralph Dale Thompson
MITCHELL — Ralph Dale Thompson, 64, of Mitchell, Nebraska died Sunday, July 15, 2001 at the Regional West Medical Center.

A funeral service will be Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the Grace Chapel with Rev. Rich Peterson officiating. Interment will be at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Memorials have been established to the family. Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on July 14, 1937, in Norton, Kan., to Fred and Georgia (Degraw) Thompson. Ralph grew up in North Platte Valley area. He attended Scottsbluff Schools and graduated in 1956. He attended Scottsbluff Junior College, where he received his Associate Degree. He was in the Gering National Guard in 1956. He entered the United States Marines in 1957 and was honorably discharged in 1960. Ralph met Karen Clapp in Huntley, Wyo. They were married on October 10, 1961, and to this union two children were born, Dawn Dorene and Phil Dean. Ralph started at Frontier Airlines in 1961 in Scottsbluff. His career at Frontier Airlines lasted 28 years and he was stationed at Scottsbluff, Cheyenne, Wyo., Farmington, N.M., and Denver, Colo. After Frontier Airlines he worked various jobs until he started his own business, Fas-Break Windshield Repair. He also drove school bus for Gering Public School System for the last four years. He enjoyed golfing, watching football and baseball, and playing with his granddaughters, Kendall Shea and Hanna Cae. He attended the Grace Chapel in Scottsbluff.

He is survived by his wife Karen, daughter Dawn Dorene Thompson, son and daughter-in-law, Phil D. and Donna, granddaughters, Kendall Shea and Hanna Cae, all of Gering; sisters, Shirley (Kurk) Hulet of Woodburn, Ore., Stella Strauch of Mitchell, and Dixie (Bill) Hansen of Pierce, Colo.; brothers, Art (Eldora) Thompson of Cheyenne, Wyo., Ron (Sandy) Thompson of Gering, and Dan (Annie) Merriam of Lawrence, Kan.; mother-in-law Helyn Clapp of Torrington, Wyo.; brother and sister-in-law, Dewey (Carey) Clapp and Brian (Dona) Foster, all of Torrington, Wyo.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law, and sister Jackie.

Oren Cox
SIDNEY — Oren Cox, 83, a longtime Sidney resident died Thursday, December 27, 2001 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church in Sidney with Rev. Alan Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney. Friends can call at the Gehrig & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to the family’s choice. Gehrig & Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born May 6, 1918 in Shelton, the son of Clarence E. and Stella (Bolton) Cox. He attended and graduated from Kimball High School. He moved to Sidney in 1941 after living in Potter. He had a long career in law enforcement; he was Cheyenne County Sheriff for four years, Deputy Sheriff for eight years and a special deputy for 20 years. He was a member of the Police Officers Association of Nebraska. Nebraska Sheriff’s Association and the National Sheriff’s Association. He also worked for the City of Sidney and Marathon Oil Company. He was a member of the IOOF Lodge #91 and of Colfax #23 IOOF of North Platte and a past Grand Master State of Nebraska of the IOOF; he was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge #66. He was recognized as Citizen of the Year in 2000 by the Masonic Lodge. He was known to many children as “Santa” for 45 years during the Christmas season. He was active in Boy Scouts of America for 50 years and received the Silver Beaver Award and assisted with the development and maintenance of Camp Fuller Boy Scout Camp in Sidney. He was also active in Little League Baseball.
He was an originating member of the Oktoberfest committee and an active officer and member since the beginning. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sidney and a Lay Representative since 1999.
His parents; one brother, Walter; and one grandson, Jeremy Cox, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Earline of Sidney; son, Larry Cox of Sidney; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Melvin Flick of Morrill and Patricia and Bill Printz of Sidney; brother and sister-in-law, Alva and Beverley Cox of Escalon, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
