Meda I. "Pat" LaBarge, 81

(Dec. 2) GERING - Meda Irene "Pat" LaBarge, 81, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Gering. She was born March 21, 1921, at Bison, S.D.

She received her primary education at Bison, S.D., and graduated from the School of Cosmatology in Rapid City. She resided in Alliance for many years, before moving to Grant in 1972 where son David and she operated the Grant Steak House. Since 1999, she has resided in Gering. She is survived by four daughters, Pamela Griffith of Alliance, Joyce Carter of Gering, Saundra Kedrowski of Grant and Judith Heflin of Oklahoma; her son Cavin LaBarge of Alamosa, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by daughter Debra.

Mrs. LaBarge's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kinkade Funeral Home in Sturgis, S.D. Burial will be in Bison Cemetery, Bison, S.D. Memorials may be made to Prairie Havcn Hospice, 2 West 42nd St., Suite 2300, Scottsbluff, NE 69361.

Catherine Dumais, 51

(Nov. 28) BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Catherine Melinda Dumais, 51, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002. She was born March 9, 1951. Her survivors include her daughter, Heather Anne and B.J. Taylor of Alliance; and granddaughters Tyna and Kailie Taylor of Alliance. Mrs. Dumais funeral was at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Basham Funeral Care Chapel. Interment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, Bakersfield.

Christine Prelle, 52

(Nov. 25) COVINA, Calif. - Christine Prelle, 52, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at her daughter's home. She was born on June 23, 1950, at Covina to Chris and Roueche (Robertson) Prelle.

She is survived by her daughter, Robin (Colin) Hemphill; and granddaughters Cionne and Lauren. She also is survived by her mother and step-father, Roueche and Bill Ginter; brothers Tom (Pat) Prelle and Chris Andrew (Victoria) Prelle; sister Mary (Henry) Aguilar; stepsister and stepbrother, Crystal and Robbie and their families; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, many in the Alliance area. She was preceded in death by her father and stepmother Chris and Belle Prelle.

Rinney R. Wacker, 93

(Nov. 23) MONTROSE, Colo. - Rinney R. Wacker, 93, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at Montrose General Hospital in Montrose, Colo. He was born Sept 24, 1909, at Lincoln. His parents were Adam A. and Christina E. (Horst) Wacker.

He grew up in Minatare, Neb., and, in 1928, moved with his family from Bayard to Montrose. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He married Lydia Bastron on June 14, 1947, at Montrose. Mrs. Wacker preceded him in death on Sept. 6, 1977. Among his survivors are Leo and Rosie Wacker of Alliance.

Mr. Wacker's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at Crippen Funeral Home Chapel of Montrose. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be to Hospice of the Uncompahgre Valley, In Memory of Rinney Wacker, P.O. Box 1804, Montrose, CO 81402.

Lyle T. Stone, 78

(Feb. 10) ALLIANCE - Lyle T. Stone, 78, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at his home. He was born May 21, 1924 at Sloan, Iowa, to Thomas and Cecil (Whitlock) Stone.

He married Martha Schwaderer Sept. 21, 1947, at Alliance. He was a member of the St. John's United Lutheran Church and the Eagles. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Chuck Leisy of Alliance; son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Kathy Stone of Rochester, Wash.; grandchildren, Theresa Stone of Puyallup, Wash., and Daniel Stone of Bremerton, Wash. He also is survived by his sisters, Alberta Marsh of Lincoln, Etta Hudson of Billings, Mont., and Doris Kunzman of Albuquerque, N.M. He was preceded in death by is parents, his wife, and his brother.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, February 13, at St. John's United Lutheran Church, with Alice Shriver, PMA, officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. John's United Lutheran Church or to Prairie Haven Hospice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Vern Chicoine, 89

(Feb. 10) CHADRON -Vernon P. Chicoine, 89, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at the Chadron Community Hospital. He was born Dec. 16, 1913, in Tripp County, S.D., but spent his youth in Cherry County.

He graduated from Valentine High School. Chicoine moved to Chadron in June, 1937, to work for his father, who had purchased the Ford agency. Four years later, Chicoine and his brother Roy bought the dealership. They soon added an implement business and purchased a ranch south of Chadron. In 1954, the brothers dissolved partnership with Vern taking over the ranch, which he substantially expanded before selling it in 1973. He married Bessie Holsworth shortly before they moved to Chadron. She died in 1969. He then married Frances Furman, who had ranching interests and was a well-known poet. After she died in 1997, he married Madge Fortune, and they built a new home at 702 East 10th Street. He was president of the Chadron Rotary Club and Chadron Chamber of Commerce in the late 1940s and was the Chadron mayor 1950-51. He received Chadron State College's Distinguished Service Award in 1994 and was named the Citizen of the Year by the Chadron Record in 2001. He was a businessman, rancher, civic leader, investor and philanthropist. He remained active in several organizations. In the past few years, he was a primary contributor toward construction of press boxes at the Chadron High School and Chadron State College football fields, improvements at the Chadron Arts Center and the bell tower to be constructed at the Museum of the Fur Trade. One of his largest contributions was for the construction of the atrium at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center that is named for him and his wife, Madge Fortune Chicoine, at CSC. Last fall, the couple purchased a life-size bronze statue of Thomas Jefferson that is on permanent display in the atrium. He also established scholarships and an athletic endowment at Chadron State and was a major supporter of his church, Masonic and Shriner functions, 4-H and other youth activities. He had helped several young agricultural producers establish their herds. He was a member of the board of directors of the Chadron State Foundation for approximately 40 years. His contributions to the college exceeded $700,000. Survivors include his wife; brothers Bernard of Redding, Calif., and Ed of Lincoln; sister JoAnn Fitzpatrick of Fort Collins, Colo.; stepchildren Steve Furman of Clay Center, Susan Geister of Chadron, Tom Fortune of Lincoln, Vikki Anderson of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Tim Fortune of Bluemont, Va.; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Chicoine's funeral will be will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at the United Methodist Church at Chadron. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Chadron. Chamberlain Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Wanda Mae Wieder, 78

(Feb. 8) DENVER - Wanda Mae Coursey-Wieder, 78, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, at Denver. She was born April 5, 1924.

She is survived by her husband, Jay Wieder; son Lee Wieder of Sidney, Neb.; daughters Kittie Sallee of Weatherford, Texas, Judi Lombardi of Lakewood, Colo., and Cyndi Croft of Denver; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son John Wieder of Newark, Ohio.

Mrs. Wieder's funeral will be at noon Tuesday at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 1091 S. Colorado Blvd., Denver. Burial will be in Ft. Logan National Cemetery, near Denver. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday at the chapel. Memorials may be made in memory of Wanda Wieder, c/o Grace United Methodist Church, 3201 E. Yale Ave., Denver, CO 80222.

Mahlin L. Johnson, 86

(Feb. 7) ALLIANCE - Mahlin Lloyd Johnson, 86, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Highland Park Care Center. He was born in Sheridan County on June 8, 1916, to Foster and Minnie (Green) Johnson.

He stayed on the family home ranch until 1949 taking care of his mother and the ranch. On Dec. 9, 1951, he was married Helen (Wamsley) Moore at the Methodist Church at Gordon. They purchased a small farm south of Gordon and then in 1953 they moved south of Rushville to the Jake Herman Ranch where they lived for 21 years. In 1974 they moved into their home at Alliance where he lived until moving to Highland Park in 2002. While never having children of his own, he loved Helen's children and their families as his own. His survivors include his stepchildren, Betty Prentice Erny, Bruce and Sheila Moore, Bob and Amy Moore, and Doris and Clarence Coder; 21 grandchildren; and over 30 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by sister-in-law Opal Collins; nieces and nephews, Louise Brening, Helen Iossi, Bill Case, Tom Johnson, Blake Johnson, Gordon Johnson, Dennis Johnson and Marie Henson and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 47 years Helen, brothers Hanford and Lafe Johnson, sister Hazel Case, step-children Colleen (Moore) Wordeman and Don Moore, grandson Steve Wordeman.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jerry Mercer officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church, Prairie Haven Hospice, Box Butte General Hospital Dialysis Unit or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mackay L. Worley, 73

(Feb. 7) BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - Mackay L. Worley, 73, died of cancer on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at his home. He was born at Alliance and attended Alliance High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Upon his return from military service, he started Worley Diesel Service at Hemingford, where he worked until 1960, when he and his wife moved to Minnesota. He and his family returned to the Alliance area frequently for visits, where he enjoyed visiting his family and friends. He is survived by his wife Phyllis; and daughter Lynette. He also is al survived by his sister Suzanne Worley; sister-in-law Byrdeen Worley; aunt Katherine Barnes; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Harvey and Helen Worley and brother Donald Worley.

Mr. Worley's funeral will be Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Richfield, Minn. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Kristin Bottger, 22

(Feb. 6) LINCOLN - Kristin Marie Bottger, 22, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Omaha. She was born Dec. 17, 1980, at Alliance to Norman and Sheri (Kunzman) Bottger.

She was a 1999 graduate of Pius X High School and was a senior in business at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She was participating in an accounting internship with KPMG of Omaha. She was active in Right to Life and university of Nebraska Newman Center. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. She is survived by her parents, Norm and Sheri Bottger of Lincoln; sister Andrea (Dustin) Dreger of Enid, Okla.; brother, Sean Bottger of Lincoln; nephew and niece Joseph and Mikaela Kreger of Enid; grandparents Norman and Mary Bottger of Belleville, Kan., and Aggie Kunzman of Alliance; fiance, John vonRentzell of Lincoln; and his family, Rich and Kathy and Tom vonRentzell of Lincoln, and Elizabeth vonRentzell of Denver, Colo. She was preceded in death by her grandfather Paul Kunzman and cousin Nolan Bottger.

A Mass of Christian burial will be a 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 7, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, with Fr. Thomas Bush officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. A Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 6, at the church. Visitation will be for one hour prior to Mass on Friday, Feb. 7. Pallbearers will be Bob Fillaus, Rill Christen, Justin Meyer, Gabe Kidwell, Adam Schlautman and Tom vonRentzell. Honorary pallbearers will be Jared and Casey Moscrip, Richard Willey, Ri Kunzman, Brett Bottger and Nathan Fiser. Memorials have been established to Pius X High School, Autism Society of America or in care of the family toward a scholarship to be given in her memory. Edith A. "Midge" Gaines, 82

(Feb. 6) ALLIANCE - Edith Alene "Midge" Gaines died Feb. 4, 2003, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born March 28, 1920, in Ravenna, Neb., to Charlie and Jennie (Hanke) Tutt.

The family moved to Alliance in 1927, remaining there through their lifetime. Edith graduated from Alliance High School in 1939. She married George Martin in 1940 and to this union one son, George Charles was born. On March 28, 1968, she was united in marriage to Archie Gaines in Alliance. They were engaged in long distance trucking for five years before buying Bert's Welding Shop in 1973. They changed the name to Gaines Steel Supply Company, Inc., which they operated until May 1, 2002. Midge was admitted to Good Samaritan in April 2002. Her parents, two sisters, Eva Duff and Alva Mae Weiland, and one brother Leonard Charles Tutt preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Archie Gaines; son George Charles Tutt of Spokane, Wash.; two granddaughters, Nicole Tutt and Kirstin and husband Bob Votava; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by stepchildren, Diane Lay of Vinita, Okla., Randy Gaines of Garvin, Okla.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Midge was a member of the First Baptist Church, Gideons International Auxiliary, and former member of Eastern Star, B.P.O. Does, and Good-Sam Camping Club. She enjoyed church, family, friends, her camper trailer and membership in the Hart Ranch in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Alliance. Reverend Jim Rowe will officiate. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Gideon International, First Baptist Church or to a church of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Loren C. Solberg, 77

(Feb. 6) ALLIANCE - Loren C. Solberg, 77, died Wednesday, Feb 5, 2003, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born Aug. 15, 1925, at Alliance, Neb., to Oscar N. and Johanna (Johnson) Solberg.

He married Wanda Hammond July 18, 1954, at Alliance. He served in the United States Army from April of 1944 to May of 1946 in the 84th Infantry Division, Company L, 334th. In 1949, he joined Cliff Gregory and helped build Gregory's Insurance. In 1972, he bought Gregoryâs Insurance and was president until he retired and sold the company in 1984. He was a member of the First Christian Church, past president of the State Professional Insurance Agents, past state director of Professional Insurance Agents, past national director of Professional Insurance Agents, past chairman of the Box Butte General Hospital Building Committee, a member of the Lions Club where he was also past president, a life member of the VFW, American Legion, where he was past commander, and the Elks, where he was on the Finance Committee, a 30-year member of the Eagles, a member of the Cattle Capital Shrine Club and the Masons. He received the Lions Club Edward Jones Award and the Mutual Insurance Agent of the Year Award. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Solberg of Alliance; son and daughter-in-law, Gaylord and Nancy Solberg of Alliance; daughter and son-in-law, Bev and Paul Bergeland of Grapevine, Texas; brother and sister-in-law, Mearl and Gladys Solberg of Loveland, Colo.; brother-in-law, Claude Hammond of Alliance; grandchildren, Heath and his wife Destiny, and Justin, Jenni, and Matt; three step-grandchildren, four great step-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, and many friends in Alliance and Donna, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and a sister.

Memorial services will be Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church, with the Reverend William J. Graham officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Alliance Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Sallows Military Museum, 908 Yellowstone, Alliance, Nebraska, 69301, the First Christian Church, Box Butte General Hospital, the American Cancer Society, or the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
