Donna Braun
Donna L. Braun, 56, of Grand Island died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Salvation Army Church at Seventh and Sycamore streets. Mrs. Braun was cremated, and inurnment will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Braun was born
on Feb. 10, 1943, in Grand Island to Fenner Eugene and Helen Lucille (James) Kolb. She graduated from Grand Island Senior High School.
She married Loyd Marland Miller on Aug. 17, 1962, in Central City. They divorced on June 30, 1976.
She married on John Braun in 1985 in Watertown, S.D., and they divorced in 1994.
Mrs. Braun was a cook at Coney Island for 10 years.
Survivors include three daughters, Melissa Combs of San Pedro, Calif., Nadine Anderson of Grand Island and Tammy Johnson of Bradshaw; one son, Robert Miller of Grand Island; 11 grandchildren; a brother, Alvin Kolb of Grand Island; and a sister, Bertha Hines of Washington.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Detra.
David Ellington
David A. Ellington, 55, of Grand Island died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Rosa Hespe
Rosa B. Hespe, 82, of Grand Island died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Pender. The Rev. Norman Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Pender.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Munderloh Funeral Home in Pender.
Memorials are suggested to Bethphage Mission in Axtell or Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church in Omaha.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
Miss Hespe was born
on Jan. 10, 1917, in Pender to Carl and Matilda (Ahlers) Hespe. She grew up and was educated in Pender. She moved to Omaha and attended a business school.
She worked as a bookkeeper at the Butane Gas Co. in Omaha and later worked for an accounting firm in Omaha. She retired in 1981.
She moved to Grand Island in December 1995. She lived at Riverside Lodge and had lived at Tiffany Square Care Center since December 1998.
Miss Hespe enjoyed reading, playing cards and going to auctions.
She was a member of Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church in Omaha.
Survivors include two sisters, Emma Schmerdtmann of Grand Island and Genie Bell of Baltimore; and one brother, John Hespe of Norfolk.
She was preceded in death by one brother, George Hespe; and four sisters, Freida Hespe, Matilda Westerhold, Anna Hespe and Martha Hespe.
Adelaide Peterson Tappan
AURORA -- Adelaide Peterson Tappan, 87, of Aurora died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at Memorial Community Care in Aurora.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Aurora Cemetery. The Rev. Jay Mitchell will officiate. Inurnment will be at Aurora Cemetery.
Higby Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Tappan was born
on Jan. 31, 1912, at Aurora to A. Einer and M. Adelaide (Thomas) Peterson. She attended Aurora High School for two years before graduating from Stephens High School in Columbus, Mo. She later attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she majored in history.
She was married to Robert Wells Borden from 1932 to 1947 and was married to Alan P. Tappan from 1955 to 1959. Mrs. Tappan spent most of her adult life in California.
She enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include a son, Robert Einer Borden of Escondido, Calif; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sari Ann Anderson.
Lawrence Anderson
GOTHENBURG -- Lawrence A. Anderson, 87, of Gothenburg died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg.
Services were on Sunday at the United Methodist Church in Gothenburg. The Revs. David Fowler, Gene Purcell and Robert Litzenberger officiated. Burial was in the Gothenburg Cemetery with military honors by the Gothenburg Firing Squad.
Blase Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established.
Mr. Anderson was born
on July 3, 1912, near Etna to Albert and Emma (Anderson) Anderson. He graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1929.
He served in the U.S. Army in the 23rd General Hospital in North America, Italy and France during World War II.
He married Harriett A. Conger on Oct. 9, 1949, in Grand Island. They farmed and ranched on Mr. Anderson's grandparents' farm in the New Hope community for many years. They moved to Gothenburg in 1997.
Mr. Anderson was a member of American Legion Post 64 and the United Methodist Church. He was a past member of the New Hope school board and had served as justice of the peace in Wayne Township in Custer County.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Christy Meyer of Fremont, Mary Lou (Mrs. John) Block of Gothenburg and Aimee (Mrs. Larry) Benson of Grand Island; one son, Alan Anderson of Des Moines, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; and three sisters, Helen (Mrs. Gene) Ostergard and Eunice (Mrs. Darwin) Edson, both of Gothenburg, and Elda Kohls of Fort Collins, Colo.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Emelyn Bonde.
Murl Beller
BENKELMAN -- Murl R. Beller, 76, of Benkelman died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at the Dundy County Hospital in Benkelman.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney. The Rev. Ford Shenk will officiate. Burial will be in the Litchfield Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday and until service time Friday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Marty Brown
LINCOLN -- Marty G. Brown, 52, of Lincoln died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in Lincoln.
Memorial services were on Monday at Eastridge Presbyterian Church in Lincoln. The Rev. Donald McCall officiated.
Memorials are suggested to the family, the American Cancer Society, Capital Humane Society in Lincoln or Central Nebraska Humane Society in Grand Island.
Mr. Brown was born
on Nov. 13, 1946, in Grand Island to Roger and Joy Brown. He grew up in Grand Island, attended public schools and graduated from Senior High in 1965.
He lettered in football, basketball and track, was a member of the Grand Island state track championship team in 1963 and played on an American Legion Baseball Nebraska state championship team.
He received a master's degree in physical education from the University of Nebraska.
He was beginning his 30th year of teaching in the Lincoln public schools and also worked at the University of Nebraska, supervising student teachers.
Mr. Brown was a member of the Lincoln Education Association and Taylor Park Neighborhood Association and was active in the Babe Ruth Baseball Association.
He enjoyed gardening and planting trees. He had planted several hundred trees at parks and schools throughout Lincoln.
Survivors include his wife, Connie; one son, Aaron Brown of Lincoln; three daughters, Heather (Mrs. Troy) Teets of Grand Island, Stephanie Powell of Iowa City, Iowa, and Keri (Mrs. Sean) Frommelt of Ankeny, Iowa; one granddaughter; and his parents, of Grand Island.
Gaylord Doremus
COLUMBUS -- Gaylord D. Doremus, 75, of Columbus died on Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at Columbus Community Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River. Burial will be in the Shelton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. Further visitation will be from noon to service time Wednesday at the Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Doremus was born
on Dec. 17, 1923, at Shelton to Chester and Pearl (Marks) Doremus. He attended Shelton public schools.
He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Wisconsin during World War II.
He married Iva "Billie" Wonch on June 4, 1948, in Grand Ledge, Mich. He lived in the Shelton area until moving to Columbus, where he lived for the past 15 years.
Mr. Doremus was a member of Eagles Aerie 378 in Grand Island and sang in many country bands in the area.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Gayle (Mrs. David) Burnett, Kathie Dee and Mollie (Mrs. Tom) Stoffel, all of Columbus; one son, Chester Doremus of Kearney; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, Gerald Doremus of Gering; and one sister, Arlene (Mrs. Clinton) Frame of Sturgis, Mich.
He was preceded in death by one grandson; two brothers, Clifford and Marvin Doremus; one sister, June.
Cheryl Ashlock
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Cheryl A. Ashlock, 54, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Grand Island, died on Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at her home.
Memorial services were on Monday in Phoenix. Burial services will be at a later date in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Ms. Ashlock was born
on March 18, 1945, in Grand Island to William and Shirley (Herzog) Brand. The family moved in 1954 to Colorado Springs, where she graduated from Wasson High School in 1963. She received her registered nursing degree from Seton School of Nursing in Colorado Springs in 1967.
She married Martin Ashlock on Sept. 21, 1967, in Colorado Spring.
Survivors include one son, Justin Ashlock of Colorado; one daughter, Melanie Erwin of Colorado; one granddaughter; her mother, Shirley (Herzog) Anderson of Grand Island; and one brother, Michael Brand of Omaha.
Her father preceded her in death.
Hilda Bogner
Hilda Bogner, 89, of Grand Island died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999.
Services are pending with Kleine Funeral Home.
