Deryld Casteel
Deryld L. Casteel, 74, of Grand Island died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Kleine Funeral Home. The Rev. George Wheat will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to service time Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Casteel was born
on Sept. 14, 1924, at Grand Island to Lynn J. and Clarice (Miller) Casteel. He grew up and was educated in Grand Island.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and served until 1946 as a medic.
He later became a truck driver for Arrow Freight Lines and then moved to Lexington, where he worked for the company as a terminal manager. He worked for 10 years in Lexington before retiring to Grand Island.
He married Betty Cochran on Feb. 5, 1953, at Denver. Mrs. Casteel died in 1986.
Mr. Casteel was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Platt-Duetsche and Fraternal Order of Eagles. He also enjoyed hunting, horse racing and football games.
Survivors include a brother, Kenneth Casteel of Grand Island.
Sharon Kilcoin
Sharon Kilcoin, 57, of Grand Island, formerly of O'Neill, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at Grand Island.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Faith Community Church in O'Neill. The Rev. David Foster will officiate. Burial will be in the O'Neill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon to service time Wednesday at the church. Biglin's Mortuary of O'Neill is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Kilcoin was born
on April 21, 1942, to Dewey and Anna (Kriezier) True.
She married James Kilcoin on Dec. 16, 1957, at Burke, S.D. She worked in O'Neill at the M&M Bakery and the Alco Store. Mr. Kilcoin died on Oct. 3, 1987. After his death, Mrs. Kilcoin moved to Grand Island, worked in home health care and was an agent for Pioneer Funds.
She was a member of Faith Community Church and enjoyed sewing, reading and crafts.
Survivors include three sons, Tracy Kilcoin of Inman, Jim Kilcoin of O'Neill and Martin Kilcoin of Alda; four daughters, Jody (Mrs. Randy) Morgan of Richmond, Va., Lynda Schaaf and Kari Kilcoin, both of Alda, and Tara (Mrs. Curt) Summers of Colorado; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandson; three sisters, Letha Morton of Baker City, Ore., Lucille Wabs of Port Arthur, Texas, and Virginia Ferris of South Sioux City; and two brothers, Ira Kinney of South Dakota and Hank Kinney of Denver.
Louis Lovenburg
Louis "Lou" Lovenburg, 86, of the Grand Island Veterans Home died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Mr. Lovenburg was cremated, and burial will be at a later date in the Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Kleine Funeral Home in Grand Island and Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Lincoln are in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Lovenburg was born
on May 8, 1913, at Madrid to Frank and Louise (Sibl) Lovenburg. He was educated at Madrid and graduated from high school there. In the 1930s, he began a lifetime of photography.
He served as an infantry sergeant in the Philippines from Feb. 27, 1941, to Oct. 16, 1945. After the service, he worked on his own in photography in Denver and later worked for a photographer in Ogallala. He became a photographer for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission's Nebraskaland Magazine in 1961 and also worked on its educational TV programs until his retirement. He also made many wildlife movies.
As a young man, he was a very active Boy Scout leader, a counselor on camping and canoe trips and at a boys camp on the U.S./Canadian border.
He was a member of the American Legion and had been given the honorary degree of Admiral in the Nebraska Navy.
He lived in Lincoln for much of his life and moved to the Grand Island Veterans Home in September 1995.
Survivors include one brother, Charles of Lewellen; and one nephew and niece, Norm and Barb Sodomka of Grand Island.
Erna Hulme
CAIRO -- Erna Hulme, 89, of Cairo died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at the St. Francis Memorial Health Center Skilled Care Unit.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Cairo United Methodist Church. The Rev. Alan Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery at Cairo.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. The Rev. John D. Russell will officiate.
Memorials are suggested to the Cairo Quick Response Team, Cairo United Methodist Church or St. Pauls Lutheran Church of Grand Island.
Mrs. Hulme was born
on March 26, 1910, at her parents' home in Shelton to K. Fredrick and Wilhemine (Eickhoff) Kruse. She grew up on the farm, attended rural school and graduated from Shelton High School in 1927. She graduated from Kearney State College and taught at a rural school near Cairo for three years.
She married Orville G. Hulme on Jan. 3, 1932, and they lived on the Hulme homestead throughout their marriage. She taught in the Ravenna and Centura schools and enjoyed working with children. Mr. Hulme died in January 1999.
Mrs. Hulme was active in extension work and county 4-H activities. She belonged to the Bluff Center Extension Club, You Can I Can Club, Thimble Club, senior citizens group, Izaak Walton League, retired teachers group and St. Pauls Lutheran Church. She liked gardening, flowers, canning and helping with farm work.
Survivors include a son, Doyle Hulme of Grand Island; a daughter, Lois June Hughes of Mankato, Minn.; five grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Lydia Tyner and Viola Moss.
'Wes' McCaslin
BROKEN BOW -- James Wesley "Wes" McCaslin, 93, of Broken Bow died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Bruce Freeman will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the Cedars Richardson House in Broken Bow.
Mr. McCaslin was born
on April 20, 1906, in Terry, Mont., to Edward Byron and Mary Josephine (Plumb) McCaslin. He moved with his parents to Custer County before 1912. He attended Custer County country schools and received his diploma on May 23, 1923.
He married Evelyn Emma Clay on Jan. 4, 1926, at Broken Bow. They lived south of Broken Bow, in Broken Bow, Dry Valley, Sumner, the Roundhill community southeast of Broken Bow, Merna, near Buffalo and then Lexington. He farmed, drove a tank wagon truck and worked for an implement company.
In 1959, they settled in Gothenburg for 34 years. He worked for Mann Hay Co. and Monroe Auto Equipment. Before retiring at the age of 67, he helped his son-in-law do building repair work off and on for a couple of years and also repaired lawn mowers.
The couple moved to Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow in the winter of 1993 because of health problems.
Mr. McCaslin enjoyed playing baseball, singing and playing the violin and harmonica.
Survivors include four sons, Dan McCaslin of Broken Bow, Curtis McCaslin of Hershey, Clifford McCaslin of Merna and Daryl McCaslin of North Platte; five daughters, Audrey (Mrs. Hap) Jones of Thedford, Ardis Goodner of Broken Bow, Cleo Purdum of Reed Point, Mont., Beverly (Mrs. Jim) Goehring of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Leata (Mrs. Boyd) Krejci of Eustis; 30 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Edward; one daughter, Mary Neben; two grandsons; one brother, Elmer McCaslin; and four sisters, Emma Owens, Lillie Caywood, Ramona Hobbs and Dorothy Struempler.
Cathy Crisp
LINCOLN -- Cathy Heusel Crisp, 51, of Lincoln died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Shelton Methodist Church.
Roper Funeral Home in Lincoln is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her parents, Gary and Milly Heusel of Gibbon.
Rosanne Nowicki
OMAHA -- Rosanne Nowicki, 61, of Omaha died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, in Omaha.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Church in Omaha. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Boyd E. Braman Mortuary of Omaha is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Nowicki was born
on Dec. 1, 1937, in Omaha to John and Margaret Kolar.
She married Edward Nowicki. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Tom and John Nowicki; a daughter, Patricia (Mrs. Randy) Boesen of Omaha; eight grandchildren; her mother, of Omaha; and a sister, Karen (Mrs. Jim) Gladson.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her father.
Eda Jones
Eda M. Jones, 94, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at Tiffany Square Care Center.
Mrs. Jones was cremated. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Geneva Cemetery. The Rev. William Voelker will officiate.

Verna Griggs
SUN CITY, Ariz. -- Verna L. Griggs, 88, of Sun City, Ariz., died Aug. 15, 1999, at Sun Health Care Center in Sun City, Ariz.
Services and burial were at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City.
Mrs. Griggs was born
at Prosser. She moved to Arizona from Missouri more than 24 years ago. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Sun City Hand Weavers and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was very active in the St. Louis Girl Scouts from 1953 to 1975 and received the Thanks Badge.
Survivors include one daughter, Judy L. Griggs of Rockford, Ill.; one son, John R. Griggs of Southlake, Texas; three grandchildren; one sister, Florence Hutton of Brighton, Colo.; and one brother, Ralph Geddes of Rawlins, Wyo.
Robert Mugg
MENLO PARK, Calif. -- Robert Leelan Mugg, 66, of Menlo Park, Calif., died suddenly on Aug. 13, 1999, in Menlo Park.
Mr. Mugg was cremated, and a family memorial service will be at a later date at the Rengstdorff House in San Francisco.
Mr. Mugg was born
on March 28, 1933, in San Francisco to Leelan and Lilas R. Mugg. He attended school in San Francisco and graduated from Lowell High School. He earned his bachelor of science degree from San Francisco University.
He entered the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was discharged as a private first class.
He married Nancy Jane Paulsen, formerly of Grand Island, on March 23, 1963, at St. John's Presbyterian Church in San Francisco.
Mr. Mugg worked with the American National Bank and later with Wells Fargo Bank, where he was credit manager and worked in time management before retiring.
After retiring, he was clerk of the Visiting Nurses Association. He was first reader for three years at the First Church of Christ Scientist in Menlo Park, Calif., where he was a longtime member.
He enjoyed volunteering for the Rengstdorff House and tending his rose gardens.
Survivors include his wife; a sister, Barbara (Mrs. Keith) Crockett of Redwood City, Calif.; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Suzanne Paulsen of Grand Island.
