Esther Rogers

Esther Rogers, 89, of Grand Island, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.

Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Aurora Cemetery with the Rev. Jay Mitchell of First Christian Church officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Higby Mortuary in Aurora. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.

Mrs. Rogers was born icon Sept. 9, 1909, at Fallis, Okla., to John and Lydia (Rector) Gray. She grew up in Valentine and Aurora and graduated from Aurora High School. She married Carroll A. Rogers at Fremont on Oct. 20, 1931. The couple lived in California and Aurora, before moving to Grand Island, where they owned and operated Rogers Greenhouse. They retired in 1979.

Following her husband's death in 1981, Mrs. Rogers continued to live in Grand Island. She moved to Good Samaritan Health Center in Wood River in 1998.

Mrs. Rogers was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking, baking and being with her family.

Survivors include two sons, Larry of Grand Island and David of Hayden; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Diane; four brothers and two sisters.

Ervin Beck

WOOD RIVER -- Ervin D. Beck, 66, of Wood River died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at his daughter's home in Lincoln.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island with the Rev. Rebecca Kincaid officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Beck was born icon on April 22, 1933, at Wallace to Harvey and Edna (Boehm) Beck. He was raised in Hayes County near Wallace and Hayes Center.

Survivors include two sons, Terry of Friend and Steve of Broadwater; one daughter, Donna (Mrs. Randy) Frazier of Lincoln; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his mother, Edna Miller of Wood River; two brothers, Ronald and Lyle Beck of Grand Island; one sister, Doris Elliott of Florida; and the mother of his children, Doris Beck of Friend.

He was preceded in death by one son, Randy; one infant daughter; and his father.

George Chipps

ORD -- George W. Chipps, 88, of Ord, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Ord Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Michael Chase officiating. Cremation will take place following the funeral services and inurnment will be at the Ord City Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Ord Memorial Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the family's choice. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Chipps was born icon Feb. 22, 1911, southwest of Ord in a sod house to Levi Sr. and Jenny (Woitaszewski) Chipps. He attended Cottonwood rural school.

He married Dorothy Prien on May 4, 1938, at St. Paul. The couple lived on a farmstead near Ord until 1964. They moved into the town of Ord in 1965. Mr. Chipps then farmed on the land of Fred Ulrich for more than a decade. He also worked for Rakoski Well Drilling and Kryger ranch in the summer and Roman Lech. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and was a member of Ord Elks Lodge No. 2371.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy of Ord; two sons, Robert of Ewing and Roger of Elizabeth City, N.C.; a daughter, Janette Didier of South Haven, Minn.; a brother, Levi Chipps Jr. of Buffalo, Wyo.; a sister, Ruby Boyce of Ord; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, John, Gene, Perry, Henry and Delmas.

Verne Luebbe

JOHNSON LAKE -- Verne A. Luebbe, 67, of Johnson Lake died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at Elwood.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Lexington with the Rev. Dan Cosson officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington. Memorials are suggested to the Tri County Shrine or the Grace Lutheran Church. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Luebbe was born icon March 12, 1932, in Howard County to Arthur and Bertha (Boltz) Luebbe.

He grew up and attended school in Howard County and graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1949. He married Alice Jeanne Sheldon in Overton on May 16, 1954.

Mr. Luebbe spent 41 years with the Union Pacific Railroad. He worked as a clerk, as a traffic agent with the tour department and then was an engineer. He retired in March 1990.

The couple at their summer cabin at Johnson Lake and moved there full time in 1990, where Mr. Luebbe enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling and being with his family and grandchildren.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church, confirmed in 1945; a lifetime member of the B.P.O.E., the F.O.E., the Golden Age Eagle and a charter member of the North Platte Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife Jeanne of Johnson Lake; a son, Randy of North Platte; a daughter, Patti (Mrs. Brad) Barber of Lincoln; a brother, Leland of Grand Island; a sister, Lois (Mrs. Richard Daniell) Luebbe of Lincoln; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lorraine and Margie.

Clara Rochford

KEARNEY -- Clara M. Rochford, 90, of Kearney died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at St. John's Good Samaritan Village where she had been staying for the past two months.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. The Rev. Jim Golka will officiate. Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery. Vigil wake services will be 7:30 p.m. Monday at the church.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday at the Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary and prior to services at the church on Monday and Tuesday. Memorials are suggested to the St. James Catholic Church Building Fund or St. John's Center. Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

She was born icon July 14, 1909, in Amherst to Henry and Johanna (Liebig) Ripp. She grew up in the Amherst area and attended Midway School District 17.

She married William M. Rochford on Aug. 2, 1932, in Amherst. They moved to the Overton area in 1938 and farmed in that area. In 1947, they moved north of Kearney where they farmed. They moved to Kearney in 1989.

Mrs. Rochford was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Kearney and the Altar Society, Glenwood Extension Club and was a charter member of the Midway Kensington. She also was a past 4-H leader and past Queen of the B.P.O. Does and a member of the Soil Sister's Garden Club.

Survivors include two sons, William of Kearney and Daniel of North Platte; two daughters, Delores Keaschall and Patricia Standage, both of Ravenna; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Gertrude Davis of Kearney.

She was preceded in death by her her husband in 1995, a daughter, a grandson, five brothers and one sister.

Donald Vogeler

NORTH LOUP -- Donald Vogeler, 77, of North Loup died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the North Loup United Methodist Church with the Rev. Melanie Adams officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Scotia.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Ord Memorial Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the North Loup and Scotia Rescue Units and North Loup United Methodist Church. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Vogeler was born icon Aug. 7, 1922, in Valley County to William W. and Beulah (Romans) Vogeler. He grew up in North Loup and received his education at Ord, graduating from Ord High School in 1940.

He married Gertrude "Pat" Patrick on June 1, 1943, in Ord. The couple has lived and farmed three miles west of North Loup for the past 55 years.

Mr. Vogeler was a member of the North Loup United Methodist Church, Ord Elks Lodge No. 2371 and North Loup Lions Club. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards, family gatherings and his grandchildren, and he never missed the annual Popcorn Days at North Loup.

Survivors include his wife Pat of North Loup; two sons, William of North Loup and Craig of Murphy, Calif.; four daughters, Linda (Mrs. Richard) Penas of Columbus, Vicky (Mrs. Mike) Johnson of Lawrenceburg, Ky.; Colene (Mrs. Merlyn) Williams of Burwell and Carol (Mrs. Tom) Holt of North Loup; 19 grandchildren; numerous foster grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Ryan Vogeler.

Golda Nutzman

Golda I. Nutzman, 70, of Grand Island died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at BryanLGH Hospital in Lincoln.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Richard M. Bacon officiating. Burial will be in a Grand Island cemetery.

There is no visitation. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church.

Mrs. Nutzman was born icon on Nov. 3, 1928, in Clay County to George and Clara (Smith) Gerdes. She grew up and attended school in Edgar. She graduated from Edgar High School in 1945.

She attended the Lincoln Business School in Lincoln. She worked for Western Land Roller in Hastings and later for several businesses in Grand Island.

She married Robert Nutzman on Aug. 5, 1951, at Edgar. They lived in Grand Island.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, where she was an elder, deaconess, choir member and member of Circle 5. She also belonged to an extension group and Cosmo Pals.

She enjoyed being involved in her church, flowers, gardening, camping and music.

Survivors include her husband, Robert of Grand Island; two daughters, Sherry (Mrs. Dave) Lieske of Kearney and Kay Nutzman of Grand Island; one son, Michael Nutzman of Kearney; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, C. Marvin Gerdes.

George Chipps

ORD -- George W. Chipps, 88, of Ord died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ord Memorial Chapel. Cremation will occur following the funeral services, and inurnment will be in the Ord City Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ord Memorial Chapel.

Florence Goettsche

ST. PAUL -- Florence A. Goettsche, 75, of St. Paul died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul with Ellen Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul.

Visitation is from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Goettsche was born icon on Aug. 15, 1924, near St. Paul to Gus and Louise (Rasmussen) Nelson. She was raised in Howard County and attended St. Paul public schools. When she was 14, her mother died. She helped raise her younger brother.

She married Herbert Goettsche on May 25, 1942, in St. Paul. They lived northeast of St. Paul, where she was a homemaker for many years. She then worked at Delicious Foods and the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island until her retirement.

She enjoyed cooking. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul.

Survivors include four sons, Jack of Grand Island, and Roger, Rick and Todd, all of St. Paul; two daughters, Pamela (Mrs. Bob) Nielsen of St. Paul and Shellie Yax of Grand Island; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Franklin Nelson of Denver; and one sister, Alice Goettsche of Denver.

She was preceded in death by her husband on June 19, 1995; two brothers, Ellis and Delvin Nelson; and one sister, Phyllis Jones.

Donald Vogeler

NORTH LOUP -- Donald Vogeler, 77, of North Loup died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at Valley County Hospital in Ord.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the North Loup United Methodist Church with the Rev. Melanie Adams officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Scotia.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ord Memorial Chapel, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the North Loup and Scotia Rescue Units and the North Loup United Methodist Church.

Meredith White

DONIPHAN -- Meredith D. White, 72, of Doniphan died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Doniphan. The Revs. Jeff Hale and Gil Karges officiated. Burial will be in Cedarview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Memorials are suggested to the family.
