Helen Wright

FULLERTON -- Helen C. Wright, 83, of Fullerton, formerly of Campbell, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at Beverly Healthcare in Fullerton.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Beverly Healthcare in Fullerton with the Rev. Don Cleary officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Fullerton Cemetery.

Visitation will be prior to service time. Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wright was born icon on Jan. 22, 1916, at Avala, Pa., to Martin and Mary Czyz. She grew up and attended Catholic schools in the area.

She worked as a waitress. She married John Wright.

Mrs. Wright entered Beverly Healthcare in January 1997.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Ervin Beck

WOOD RIVER -- Ervin D. Beck, 66, of Wood River died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at his daughter's home in Lincoln.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island with the Rev. Rebecca Kincaid officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Beck was born icon on April 22, 1933, at Wallace to Harvey and Edna Boehm. He was raised in Hayes County near Wallace and Hayes Center. He moved to Arapahoe when he was 6. The family lived there for three to four years. They returned to Hayes County, where he completed his eighth-grade education. He moved to Shelton. He graduated from Wood River High School in 1950.

He entered the U.S. Navy on Dec. 5, 1952, and served during the Korean War. He earned the National Defense Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal.

He married Doris Neemann on Dec. 24, 1952, at Shelton. They lived in San Diego. He was discharged on Feb. 18, 1954, and returned to Wood River. He also lived in Geneva and Friend, where he worked most of his life as a truck driver for Houston Truck Lines. He also did construction work and was a farm laborer.

He was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and watching football.

Survivors include two sons, Terry of Friend and Steve of Broadwater; one daughter, Donna (Mrs. Randy) Frazier of Lincoln; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his mother, Edna Miller of Wood River; two brothers, Ronald and Lyle Beck of Grand Island; one sister, Doris Elliott of Florida; and the mother of his children, Doris Beck of Friend.

He was preceded in death by one son, Randy; one infant daughter; and his father.

Meredith White

DONIPHAN -- Meredith D. White, 72, of Doniphan died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Doniphan. The Revs. Jeff Hale and Gil Karges officiated. Burial will be in Cedarview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. White was born icon on Dec. 6, 1926, on the family farm near Trumbull to LeRoy and Leona (Cox) Gregg. She was educated at District 39 School and graduated from Trumbull High School in 1944. She worked on her father's combine harvest crew and at the Hastings Ammunition Plant.

She married Gerald White on Jan. 1, 1945, at Grand Island. They moved to a farm west of Doniphan. She worked for Wheelers and the Holiday Inn. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1995.

Mrs. White was a member of the United Methodist Church in Doniphan, Hall County Historical Society, United Methodist Women and Afternoon Circle at the church. She also wrote several family history books and lineage charts.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Maurice White of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Craig White of Doniphan; two daughters, Marilyn Flagle and Cindy Ellis, both of Doniphan; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and two sisters, Margaret Hardekopf and Arlene Nelson, both of Grand Island.

Helen Wright

FULLERTON -- Helen C. Wright, 83, of Fullerton, formerly of Campbell, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at Beverly Healthcare in Fullerton.

Roger Gade

GREER, S.C. -- Roger A. Gade, 51, of Greer, S.C., died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at Charlotte, N.C.

Local memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kleine Funeral Home. The Rev. H.B. Schutte will officiate.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

Mr. Gade was born icon on Feb. 5, 1948, at Sidney to Harold and Alice (Burns) Gade. He grew up in Grand Island. He graduated in 1966 from Northwest High School, where he played football and played the tuba in band.

He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier and was president of the Central Nebraska Home Builders Show. He was project manager at Ryan Steak House in South Carolina.

Survivors include his wife, Karen of Lincoln; two daughters, Jill Gade of Lincoln and Angela (Mrs. John) Ehrenfeld of Hampton, Va.; two grandchildren; his parents, of Grand Island; one brother, James of Greer, S.C.; and two sisters, Sharon of Singapore and Ellie of High Pointe, N.C.

Lowell Bills

POLK -- Lowell W. Bills, 69, of Polk died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Arborville United Church of Christ near Polk. The Rev. Lester Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Arborville Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Solt Funeral Home in Polk. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Bills was born icon on March 1, 1930, southeast of Polk to Joseph J. and Ruth E. (Nordstrom) Bills. He graduated from Polk High School in 1947.

He married Beverly L. Jones on Sept. 3, 1950, at Polk. He farmed near Polk for several years, worked as a butcher for IGA Grocery in Stromsburg and drove the petroleum truck for United Co-op until he retired in 1992.

He was a member of Arborville United Church of Christ, Order of the Eastern Star Willanna Chapter 321, Masonic Lodge 311, Scottish Rites and Tehama Shrine. He served as secretary of the Masonic Lodge for more than 30 years, camel herder for Tehama Shrine and firefighter and chief for the Polk Volunteer Fire Department.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, growing wildflowers and bird-watching.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Kenneth "Gus" Bills of North Loup; three daughters, Penny (Mrs. John) Boyle of York, Paula (Mrs. Sam) Grassmick of Pueblo West, Colo., and Luann (Mrs. Mike) Branting of Lincoln; seven grandchildren; and two brothers, LeRoy Bills of Midwest City, Okla., and Leland Bills of York.

He was preceded in death by one grandson.

Elva Casteel

BROKEN BOW -- Elva Casteel, 97, of Broken Bow died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Doug Jones will officiate. Burial will be in the Westerville Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the nursing home.

Mrs. Casteel was born icon on Oct. 5, 1901, at Aurora to William and Mary Elizabeth (Hall) Catlett. She grew up in Aurora and graduated from Aurora High School in 1919.

She taught at rural schools for seven years.

She married Marshall Casteel on Jan. 1, 1926, at Kearney. They lived on a farm east of Westerville for 50 years. They moved to Ansley in 1978 and spent four winters in Arizona. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 1991.

A niece, Wanda Foster; a nephew, Wayne Catlett; and a great-nephew, Roger Smith, lived with the Casteels for several years.

Mr. Casteel died on Oct. 16, 1993. Mrs. Casteel moved to Custer Heights in Broken Bow in 1994, then became a Heritage Hall Nursing Home resident in June 1998.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Westerville, later transferring to Ansley and then Broken Bow. She was a member the church's Faith Circle. She also was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Westerville and Ansley for more than 50 years and the Pastime Club. She served on the District 16 school board and was president in 1957-58.

Survivors include two nephews, Wayne Catlett of Westerville and Clyde Catlett of Grand Island; and two nieces, Wanda Foster and Pauline (Mrs. Neal) Keller, both of Broken Bow.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters.

Gerald 'Jiggs' Poland

SARGENT -- Gerald "Jiggs" V. Poland, 81, of Sargent died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at the Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Don Schauda will officiate. Burial will be in Madison Square Cemetery west of Taylor.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Custer County Hospice.

Mr. Poland was born icon on Oct. 28, 1917, at Milburn to Vivian and Harriet (Vanderveen) Poland. He grew up on the family ranch and attended Pleasant Ridge School through the eighth grade.

He then worked on the family ranch until 1939, when he moved to Buchanan, Mich., and worked for Clark Equipment.

He married Juanita Patterson on June 28, 1941, at Bryan, Ohio. They moved back to Nebraska in 1942. They purchased Just a Wee Ranch in 1947 and lived there for 51 years. Due to declining health, they moved to Broken Bow two months ago. His entire life was devoted to his ranch and cattle.

He loved to hunt and entertain teams for the One Box Pheasant Hunt in Broken Bow. His most noted team were astronauts Deke Slaton, Gene Cernan, Bob Obermeier, Paul Weitz and Ron Evans. He was a member of the Broken Bow Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, of Broken Bow.

Benjamin De La Ronde

FULLERTON -- Benjamin J. De La Ronde, 77, of Fullerton, formerly of Omaha, died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.

Services are pending at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton.

Harriette Gates

LINCOLN -- Harriette E. Gates, 91, of Lincoln, formerly of Clarks, died on Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at Ambassador Home Care in Lincoln.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. John Smeltzer will officiate. Burial will be in the Clarks Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon until service time Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Gates was born icon on June 13, 1908, at rural Clarks to Horatio and Addie (Seerley) Bush. She attended High Prairie School in Merrick County and Grand Island School of Business.

She married Amos M. Gates on June 25, 1932, in Butte. They lived in Clarks, where she worked at Pollard Implement and Hardware, R&W Grocery Store and was a clerk at the Clarks Bank for 31 years. She retired in 1975. They moved to Lincoln in 1993. Mr. Gates died on Sept. 11, 1994.

Mrs. Gates enjoyed cooking and crocheting.

Survivors include her three grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and one sister, Tressa Reeb of Wyoming.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Ramona Strickland; three sisters, Charlotte Wright, Hazel Smith and Mabel Smith; and four brothers, Dewey, Van, Horatio and Gordon.
