Anna Miller

COLUMBUS -- Anna C. Miller, 94, of Columbus, formerly of Genoa, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at Genoa Long Term Care.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Rose of Lima Church in Genoa. The Rev. Robert Nienaber will officiate. Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. A vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and visitation will continue from 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.

Mrs. Miller was born icon Feb. 6, 1905, in Nance County to Gonstanty "Gus" and Maryanna (Gembica) Rinkol. She attended Boone County School District No. 26 and worked as a housekeeper.

She married Andrew Miller on April 13, 1937, in Krakow. She did farm work until 1965 when she moved to Columbus and worked at El-Fran Cafe for seven years.

She belonged to St. Rose of Lima Church in Genoa and was a past member of St. Anthony Church in Columbus.

Survivors include three daughters, Maxine (Mrs. John) Bialas of Fullerton, Joan (Mrs. Larry) Kula of Columbus and Dorothy (Mrs. Richard) Zegar of Silver Creek; a son, Robert of Columbus; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Belle Skibicki of Chicago, Ill., and Cecilia Zoucha of Columbus.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Daniel Miller; three sisters; five brothers; and one infant sister.

Ryan Smith

Ryan Andrew Smith, 19, of Grand Island, formerly of Wood River, drowned July 24, 1999, at L.E. Ray Lake in Grand Island.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Church of God at 1520 N. Ruby. The Rev. Edward Clemen will officiate.

Memorials are suggested to the Grand Island Dive Rescue Team.

Tannies Waller

Tannies J. Waller, 85, of Grand Island, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at the St. Francis Skilled Care Unit in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday with the family greeting friends from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Trinity United Methodist church.

Mr. Waller was born icon on Nov. 25, 1913, to John and Christine (Johnson) Waller near Holdrege. He graduated from Holdrege High School in 1931.

He was employed with the AAA program in Phelps County, the Central Nebraska Public Power District, the Burlington, Iowa, ammunition depot.

He entered the United States Army on Feb. 17, 1942, and served as a 1st Sergeant with the 401st Field Artillery Battalion. He was in the European Theatre. He was discharged on Jan. 28, 1946. He spent his next 31 years working for the United States Bureau of Reclamation. He retired in 1977 and lived the rest of his life in Grand Island.

He married Esther E. Murrish on Sept. 8, 1951.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Ashlar Lodge No. 33, A.F. and A.M., Andrew Chapter No. 41, Order of The Eastern Star, American Legion Post No. 53, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Gary J. Waller of Omaha and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Melvin, Milford, Martin, Roy and Fred; and four sisters, Mildred, Josie, Florence and Pauline.

Ella Kelley

LITCHFIELD -- Ella Kelley, 87, of Litchfield, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Evangelical Free Church in Pleasanton. The Revs. Brian Fugleberg and Rob Pearson will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery north of Pleasanton.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church.

Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kelley was born icon April 14, 1912, at Sartoria to George and Margaret (Smith) Cherry. She was educated at Sartoria and Mason City High School.

She married Clyde Kelley on Nov. 5, 1932, at Kearney. They lived on a farm near Sartoria and later moved to another nearby farm. They farmed until the early 1990s when they moved to Litchfield.

She loved music and house plants. She conducted child evangelism classes and Sunday school.

Survivors include a son, Allen Kelley of Litchfield; two daughters, Lyla (Mrs. Doyle) Johnson of Custer, S.D., and Anita (Mrs. Gaylord) Ottun of Sargent; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, eight brothers and a sister.

Freda Rathjen

RAVENNA -- Freda Rathjen, 89, of Ravenna, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ravenna. The Revs. Steven Schlund and Jon Rathjen will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery in Ravenna.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Lutheran Hour, Bethlehem Lutheran Dorcas Society or donor's choice.

Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Rathjen was born icon Aug. 1, 1910, at Hoskins to Otto and Meta (Heins) Gruber. She spent her early childhood in the Hoskins and Rising City areas and later moved to Sherman County in 1920. She graduated from Ravenna High School and attended Kearney Teachers College. She taught at several rural grade schools in Buffalo and Butler counties.

She married Henry Rathjen on May 10, 1936, at Ravenna. They lived on a farm near Litchfield and later moved to the family farm at Sweetwater. She worked at Henningson Foods in Ravenna for several years and was employed at Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna for 20 years. Following her husband's death in 1970, she moved to Ravenna.

She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she was an organist and choir member. She attended afternoon bible study and was a member of Dorcas Society and the Jolly Homemaker Extension Club.

Survivors include four sons, Bob of Lincoln, Larry of Hazard, Ron of Grand Island and Russ of Kearney; two daughters, Jeanene Melton and Doris Russell, both of Ravenna; 20 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter and a grandson.

Arthur Kurth

COLUMBUS -- Arthur H. Kurth, 85, of Columbus, formerly of Belgrade, died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at the Columbus Manor.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton. Burial will be in the Belgrade Main Cemetery with military rites.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Kurth was born icon Aug. 20, 1913, in Genoa to Samuel and Laura (Poole) Kurth. He grew up in the Fullerton-Genoa area and attended rural schools there.

On March 5, 1942, he entered the United States Army and served until March of 1943.

On Sept. 16, 1943, he married Stella Kula in Fullerton. They lived in the Fullerton-Genoa area where they farmed in the late 1950s. They then moved to Omaha for a few years and then moved back to the Fullerton area, where he worked for the Nance County Department of Roads and the Fullerton Elevator. They then moved to Belgrade.

Mr. Kurth retired in 1979. Mrs. Kurth died in 1993. In 1997 Mr. Kurth moved to the Columbus Manor.

He was a member of the Belgrade America Legion Post No. 99. He enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include one son, Harold of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two daughters, Gloria Greger and Maryann (Mrs. Vernon) Eggers, both of Columbus; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren; one brother, Eugene of Genoa; and four sisters, Eunice Miller of Salem, Ore., Mabel Imus of Belgrade, Dorothy Born of Columbus and Neva Horvath of Omaha.

In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Zimmerman and Faye Eggli.

Agnes Dunning

Mary Agnes Dunning, 83, of Grand Island died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, at her home following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Revs. Don Larmore and James Whalen will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ryan Smith

Ryan Andrew Smith, 19, of Grand Island, formerly of Wood River, drowned on July 24, 1999, in L.E. Ray Lake.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Church of God. The Rev. Edward Clemen will officiate.

Memorials are suggested to the Grand Island Dive Rescue Team.

Mr. Smith was born icon on Oct. 15, 1979, at Grand Island to William J. and Gayla (Hank) Smith. He grew up in the Grand Island area. He graduated from Wood River High School in May 1999.

He loved fishing and also enjoyed computers and baseball.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Church of God in Grand Island.

Survivors include his parents; two brothers, Jason of Grand Island and Quinton of Georgetown, Texas; grandparents, Sharon Smith of Denver, Garford Hank of Holdrege and Lois Hank of Bethel, Alaska; and a great-grandmother, Clara Hank of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Nathan and Brock; one sister, Stephanie; and his paternal grandfather, William J. Smith Sr.

Walter Holtz

ST. PAUL -- Walter L. Holtz, 87, of St. Paul died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Thomas Hyde will officiate. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in Burke Cemetery near Central City.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Heritage Living Center.

Mr. Holtz was born icon on Nov. 4, 1911, on a farm near Archer to Herman and Frieda (Beulh) Holtz. He attended Archer schools and graduated from Archer High School in 1929. He then attended Grand Island Business College.

He married Ruth Lohn on April 19, 1933, at Fullerton. The couple lived in Nebraska, where he farmed. He also farmed in Indiana. He then worked at Inland Steele Co. in Indiana as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement in February 1974. The couple had lived in St. Paul for the past 10 years.

His hobbies included woodworking and working as a machinist.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Bill of Holbert, Ind., Jack of Quillian, Texas, and Thomas of St. Paul; two daughters, Virginia (Mrs. Ralph) Cavanaugh of Brookside, Del., and Mary Maly of Lincoln; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles of Griffith, Ind.; and three sisters, Ruby (Mrs. Vernon) Hargens of Munster, Ind., Margaret Holtz of Wisconsin and Ethel Holtz of Hiland, Ind.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and James.
