F. B. "Mike" Connelly, 58

(March 19) WHITNEY - Frank Bruce "Mike" Connelly, 58, died March 18, 2003, at Hemingford Community Care Center. He was born March 17, 1945, at Crawford, to Frank and Jessie (Reed) Connelly.

He lived during his youth on the family farm near Whitney. After graduating from Crawford High School in 1963, he went to work for a construction company where he was trained as a brick mason. Most of this work was in eastern Nebraska. In 1965 he was drafted into the army and was stationed in Korea. Following his discharge in 1967, he returned to construction work. In 1969, he returned to the Crawford area to begin his farming career on the family farm. He also continued doing block work and made numerous fireplaces throughout the area. He enjoyed collecting and fixing up antique tractors and many were driven in the Fourth of July parades. He also was an avid gun collector. His favorite pastime was reading and as everyone knows it was hard to win an argument with Mike. He was active in several organizations including the antique tractor club, Northwest Nebraska Shooters, the N.R.A., the American Legion in which he served as an officer, and St. John the Baptist Church. His survivors include his sisters Colleen (George) Kamas of Boulder, Colo., Sara Hain of Scottsbluff, Mary Ann (Glynn) Felkins of Kimball; brothers, Bill (Merna) Connelly of Alliance, Tom and (Evelyn) Connelly of Genoa, Tim of Hay Springs; Pat (Irene) Connelly of Broomfield, Colo.; Dave (Jeanine) Connelly of Whitney; numerous nieces and nephews and their families and many friends. His parents and his brother Joe preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 24, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with Father Loren Pohlmeier officiating. Burial will be in the Crawford Catholic Cemetery with military rites provided by the Veterans Honor Guard of Chadron. A wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 23 at the church. Memorials may be given to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.

George "Bud" Moss, 100

(March 19) ALLIANCE - George "Bud" Moss, 100, died Monday, March 17, 2003, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. He was born March 26, 1902 at Clinton, to Charles (Ode) and Lula (Reno) Moss.

He attended school at Clinton. He farmed and worked as a mechanic and in construction in Sheridan, Dawes and Box Butte Counties. He married Hazel Tucker in 1923. Together they had one daughter, Sylvia. After Hazel died in 1926, he married Bess Drullinger in 1931. His daughters survive him, Sylvia Zuver of Chadron, Donna (Odey) Gregory of Chadron; son, Verle (Dorothy Moss) of Alliance; 14 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 12 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, wives Hazel Moss and Bess Moss, granddaughter Vicki Sue Moss, brothers Alfred Moss of Harrington, Kan., Eston (Shorty) Moss of Hay Springs, son-in-law Melvin Zuver of Chadron preceded him in death. Memorials may be given to Good Samaritan Health Care Center or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 20, at the Gordon Cemetery, Marvin Blundell officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Alta L. Mueller, 95

(March 19) BRIDGEPORT - Alta Leona Mueller, 95, died Monday, March 17, 2003, at Regional West Medical Center, Scottsbluff. She was born Jan. 18, 1908, in Morrill County, to Wylie Robert and Anna A. (Pinkerton) Layne.

She grew up in the "Good Streak Community" north of Bayard. She was married to George Mueller on Oct. 8, 1924, at Harrisburg. He preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 1991. She loved crocheting, country western music, and was especially proud of her flower garden. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much, and spent as much time as possible with them. She will be greatly missed by all of them. She is survived by two children, Marriah (Fred) Miller of Alliance, and Quentin (Ruby) Mueller of Bridgeport; five grandchildren, Dan Miller and John Miller of Alliance, Vicki (Walter) Dyer of Hyannis, Jennifer (David) Bucy of Gering, and Brad (Roberta) Mueller of Bridgeport; seven great-grandchildren, Dave (Stacie) Dyer of Lincoln, Robert (Ann) Dyer of Cozad, Daniel Dyer of Sutherland, James Dyer of Palisade, Mark Dyer of Hyannis, Taylor Mueller and Kimberly Mueller of Bridgeport; and a few nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband George, two sisters, one brother and great-grandson Matthew Joseph preceded her in death. Memorials have been established to the Bridgeport Fire Department, Heritage of Bridgeport or to the donor's choice.

Mrs. Mueller's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 20, at the Bridgeport Memorial Chapel, with Alice Shriver P.M.A. officiating. Burial will be in the Bayard Cemetery. Bridgeport Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Durwood J. Ellis, 76

(June 17) MEDFORD, N.J. - Durwood J. "Johnny" Ellis, died Saturday, June 14, at the Medford Care Home. He was born May 21, 1927, at Thomasville, Ga., and had lived in a retirement village at Southampton, N.J., for the last several years.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1968. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Dot of the home; son, Tim Ellis of Alliance; son Monte Ayres and Daughter Sandy Thomas of Leslie, Ark.; daughter Kitty Caracciolo of Franklinville, N.J.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He also is survived by a sister, Dorothy Ricks of Quincy, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Cecil and sister Christine.

Private family memorial services will be on Sunday, June 22, at Waveland, Miss. His ashes will be buried at the veterans' cemetery at Fort Dix, N.J.

William J. Iodence, 74

(June 16) ALLIANCE - William J. Iodence, 74, died Friday, June 13, 2003, at Poudre Valley Hospital at Fort Collins, Colo. He was born June 27, 1928, at Alliance to Charles Gladstone and Mary (Kriz) Iodence.

On March 26, 1983, he married Jan Day in Colorado. Bill ranched all of his life. His herd of Hereford cattle had it's beginning in 1913 from his grandfather and was known as one of the top herds in the nation at that time. He was a member of the American Hereford Association, Nebraska Cattleman's Association, he had been co-owner of the Alliance Sale Barn, previous owner of the Crawford Sale Barn. He hosted 49 consecutive bull sales at his ranch. He was the proud winner of many rodeos, fishing and golf tournaments and enjoyed spending his winters in Mexico with his wife Jan. His survivors include his wife Jan; his son Tom Iodence and wife Gail of Alliance and their children, Amy and husband Brian Sherlock, Tim Iodence and great-grandson Kaleb Hudson; daughter Charlene Solberg of Alliance, her children Heath Solberg and wife Destiny, Justin Solberg and great-grandson Zane; his children's mother Evelyn Iodence of Hemingford; his stepdaughter Kelly Thompson of Fort Collins, Colo., and her children Josie, Adam, Henry, Kristi and Matt; stepson James Day of Fort Collins, Colo., and his children Daniel, Jessie and David. He is also survived by his brother Charles Iodence of Hemingford and his sister Mary Elizabeth Hollinrake of Hemingford and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 17 at the Bill Iodence Ranch, 6 miles north of the 16-mile corner. Visitation will be at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home at Alliance Monday until 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to noon. Memorials for a scholarship for the Curtis Ag School may be sent in care of the family at 351 CR 59, Alliance, NE 69301 or given to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Nicholas J. Foote, 27

(June 16) ALLIANCE - Nicholas J. Foote, 27, died Friday, June 13, 2003, at the Box Butte General Hospital. He was born Sep. 17, 1975, at Vermillion, S.D.

He is survived by his father, Dewey Foote of Minneapolis, Minn.; his mother, Bernice Little of Rapid City, S.D.; his wife, Lisa Adair of Alliance; daughter, Tiana Adair of Alliance; and sons, Jesse Adair, Antonio Foote, and Xavier Foote, all of Alliance. Three sisters and five brothers also survive him.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 19, at the Indian Mission-Church of God, with Br. Don Mink officiating. Wake services will be Tuesday and Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given in care of the family at 714 Cheyenne, Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Cleo D. Steggs, 84

(June 13) ALLIANCE - Cleo D. Steggs, 84, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born June 2, 1919, at Genoa, Colo., to Clarence J. and Alma M. (Case) Steggs.

He married Delorise Weber on Dec. 21, 1938, at Alliance. He had worked as a rancher and a plumber before his retirement. He was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses. He is survived by his wife Delorise Steggs of Alliance; son and daughter-in-law, Doyle and Marsha Steggs of Alliance; daughter, Elaine Fay Steggs of Alliance; granddaughter and her husband, Donna and Wayne Buckner of Angora; great-grandchildren, Casey Tyler, Ryan Tyler, Hannah Buckner, and Dakota Buckner, all of Angora; He also is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Idelle Steggs of Alliance, and Melvin and Louise Steggs of York; special brother-in-law, Bud Christensen of Alliance; sister-in-law, Therese Weber of Alliance; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister and a brother-in-law, Velma and Charles Weber.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 19, at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Rev. Scott Steggs officiating. Memorials may be given in care of the family at 620 Mississippi, Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Agnes Price, 90

(June 12) HEMINGFORD - Agnes Margarite Hovorka Price, 90, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at Hemingford Community Care Center. She was born Sep. 1, 1912, in rural Box Butte County, to Albert and Emma (Teansky) Hovorka.

She attended rural schools in Sioux and Box Butte Counties, and graduated as class valedictorian in 1929 from Hemingford High School at the age of 16. On Oct. 31, 1929 she was married to Charles S. Price at the Congregational Church at Hemingford. Her primary interests were her family and friends. She enjoyed attending the Methodist Church until her health failed and then looked forward to the spiritual support of Reverend Collins. She was very active in the H.O.A. Club. She held numerous offices in the Hemingford American Legion Auxiliary and received many honors at the State level. Her survivors include her daughters Donna Dufek of Alliance and Louise Morava of Marsland; grandchildren, Terry (Steve) Bonds, Sherry (Don) Hunter, Greg (Sandi) Morava, and Steve (Susan) Morava; great-grandchildren, Heather (Jon) Hauschild, and Jenny, Alicia, Justin and Whitney Morava; and great-great-granddaughter, Carson Grace Hauschild. Her parents, husband, brother Victor, sister Eleanor, son-in-law Dallas Dufek, and granddaughter Gailene Morava preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 13 at the United Methodist Church, with Rev. Craig Collins officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Hemingford American Legion Auxiliary, Hemingford Volunteer Firefighters Association or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ervin Vogel, 83

(June 10) BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - Ervin E. "Joe" Vogel, 83, died Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Broken Arrow Health Care Center. He was born on July 1, 1919, at Alliance, Neb., to Beulah (Reeves) and Walter Vogel.

He grew up in western Nebraska and completed high School at Alliance at the age of 16. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He married Peggy Smith on May 20, 1944, at Enid, Okla. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Oklahoma A&M University in 1949, and worked with National Zinc Company from 1949 until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the Lions Club for over 50 years, the Lion's Sight Program, had served on the school board at Cherryvale, Kan., and was deacon of the First Presbyterian Church there. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Vogel; sons Stephen Vogel of Tulsa, Okla., James Vogel of Bixby, Okla., and Richard Vogel of Kansas City, Mo.; daughter, Becky Gates of Broken Arrow, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. He also is survived by one sister, Jean Brennan of Lincoln, Neb.

Mr. Vogel's memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, in the parlor of Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Kathy Hamrick officiating. A private burial will be in the family plot of the Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, 801 SE Washington Blvd., Bartlesville, OK 74006; or the American Diabetes Association, 6600 S. Yales Ave., Suite 1310, Tulsa, Ok 74136. Neekamp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elna M. (Wightman) Bills, 81

(Aug. 11) ALLIANCE - Elna M. (Wightman) Bills, 81, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. Elna was born April 4, 1922, at Brady, to Mary C. and Wesley B. Wightman.

She grew up on their sand hills ranch northwest of Brady, and graduated from Brady High School in 1939. She was married to Roscoe W. Bills of Lodgepole on April 4, 1941, at Hastings. To this union three children were born, Marylund Ruth, Brent Charles and Charles Oliver. Elna resided at Hastings from 1942 until 1951 when the family moved to Lodgepole where she worked with her husband to create and operate an interior contracting business. In 1966 she and her husband moved to Alliance where she worked as a bookkeeper with several local businesses, retiring in 1986 while working at Good Samaritan Towers. She was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church, and very active in Eastern Star, United Methodist Women and a local business organization for professional women.
She is survived by her husband, Roscoe; daughter, Marylund (Ernest) Henning of Madison, S.D.; sons Brent (Collette) Bills of Federal Way, Wash., and Charles (Eline) Bills of Lincoln; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She also is survived by one brother Byron Wightman of Lexington; sister Melva Norris of Brady; and numerous step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one great-grandson.

Mrs. Bills funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at the United Methodist Church. Internment will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, at Prairie View Cemetery at Lodgepole. Memorials may be sent to the United Methodist Church, Good Samaritan Care Center of Alliance or a charity of the donor's choice.

Glena I. Neumeyer, 76

(Aug. 9) MULLEN - Glena Ione Neumeyer, 76, of Mullen died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2003, at North Platte, Neb. She was born Oct. 28, 1928, at the family homestead north of Seneca. Her parents were William Pearl and Sylvia Cleo (Miller) Edelman.

She attended Jim Gown school, north of Seneca, for six years; and graduated from high school in Seneca in 1946. She was married to Red Neumeyer on March 26, 1949, at Bridgeport. Mr. Neumeyer preceded her in death. The couple followed Franke, Missouri Valley and Teton construction crews for 23 years. In 1969, they moved to Mullen and opened Red's Café. She is survived by two sons, Danny Neumeyer of Glenrock, Wyo. And Billy Neumeyer of Mullen; daughter Toni of Arnold; 13 grandchildren; and10 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her brother, Bob Edelman of Rapid City, S.D.; and her sister, Bonnetta Kemp of Sargent.

Mrs. Neimeyer's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at Cedarview Cemetery in Mullen.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday at Mullen Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice. Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
