Teresa Coyne
SPALDING -- Teresa A. Coyne, 87, of Spalding died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at Friendship Villa in Spalding.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding. The Rev. Joseph Hannappel will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with rosaries at 4:30 and 8 p.m., Friday at Dolce Scheef Mortuary in Spalding.
Mrs. Coyne was born
on July 15, 1912, in Spalding to Patrick and Monica (Stika) Cunningham. She graduated in 1929 from Spalding Academy and spent six years teaching in Nebraska rural schools.
She married Harold Coyne on June 19, 1935, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding. She helped manage Coyne IGA with her husband. The couple lived their entire lives in Spalding.
Mrs. Coyne was a member of St. Anne's Altar Society, serving as its first president; the Catholic Daughters; and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a creative seamstress, designing and sewing Mass vestments and altar coverings.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Mary Kerin (Mrs. Terry) Sexton of Carroll, Iowa; three sons, Jim of Blaine, Wash., and Jerry and Bill of Omaha; 10 grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Cowley of Santa Maria, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Orser; and two brothers, Victor and Jim Cunningham.
Mabel Kohtz
AURORA -- Mabel Lorene Kohtz, 92, of Aurora, formerly of Hampton, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at Aurora Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church near Hampton. The Rev. Loren Cooper will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Solt Funeral Home in Hampton is in charge of arrangements.
Miss Kohtz was born
on July 11, 1907, on her family's farm near Hampton to Reinhold O. and Anna Marie Caroline "Carrie" (Rau) Kohtz. She attended Zion Lutheran School near Hampton. Miss Kohtz lived most of her life and worked on the farm where she was born.
She lived with her mother and her Aunt Emma Rau and was caretaker for both of them in later years. She moved to Aurora in 1995 and had been at Memorial Hospital Long-term Care for about two months.
Miss Kohtz was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church near Hampton. She was well-known for her quilting skills. She was a member of the Hamilton County Extension Club for many years, was a volunteer at Memorial Hospital in Aurora for many years and was always helping friends and neighbors. Her kindness earned her the Dr. Otto M. Troester Award in 1967 and the Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Award in 1981.
Survivors include two nephews, John Kohtz of Crawfordsville, Ind., and Robert Kohtz of Phoenix; and one niece, Karna (Mrs. Philip) Secker of Storrs, Conn.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Dr. Reinhold H. Kohtz.
Norma Kuszak
LOUP CITY -- Norma Kuszak, 65, of Loup City died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services are pending with Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City.
Maxine Seier
AURORA -- Maxine J. Seier, 80, of Hamilton Manor in Aurora died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Hamilton Manor.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church. The Rev. Herb Schutte will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Seier was born
on July 10, 1919, in Putnam, Okla., to Arthur and Edna (Herman) Knuth. When she was 3 years old, her family moved to Grand Island. She was educated in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Senior High.
She married Alfred Hasselman on Jan. 10, 1940, in Grand Island. She was a homemaker for several years and then worked at the St. Francis School of Nursing. Mr. Hasselman died in 1969.
She married Otto Seier on Nov. 16, 1974, in Grand Island. She worked in the laundry department at St. Francis Medical Center.
Mrs. Seier was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.
Her hobbies included cooking and dancing.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Kermit of Grand Island; one daughter, Carol Byerly of Grand Island; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Florence Baasch.
Mildred Wathen
ALBION -- Mildred Irene Wathen, 91, of Albion, formerly of St. Edward, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Albion. The Rev. Terry Otto will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery at St. Edward.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Mrs. Wathen was born
on Jan. 31, 1908, at Newman Grove to Clarence E. and Selma C. (Borg) Matson. She attended Platte County District 63 School south of Newman Grove and graduated from Newman Grove High School in 1927.
She married Herbert E. Wathen on April 4, 1942, in Fremont. They lived in St. Edward until 1960, when they moved to Pierce. They moved to Hastings in 1978. They returned to St. Edward in 1982. Mr. Wathen died later that year. Mrs. Wathen moved to Albion in 1992.
She was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include her sister, Lois Gates of Albion.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Elton, Eugene and Dale Matson; and one sister, Blanche Hartjoy.
Jerry Menck
OMAHA -- Jerry W. Menck, 75, of Omaha died of cancer Nov. 12, 1999.
Mr. Menck was born
in 1924 in Grand Island. He was the great-grandson of Christian Menck, one of the founders of Grand Island.
Moving to Omaha in the late 1930s, he graduated from Central High School in 1942 before joining the U.S. Navy. Following World War II, he attended Omaha University.
He worked for Interstate Glass Co. and eventually became vice president. He founded Menck and McGovern Glass Co. with Jack McGovern in 1958. He retired in 1984.
He was director of the National Glass Dealers Association and served as a deacon of the First Central Congregational Church in Omaha.
Survivors include his wife; two sons; five grandchildren; and his sister, Peggy Menck McVea.
Agnes 'Pat' Briese
ALBION -- Agnes "Pat" Briese, 76, of Albion died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Albion. The Rev. Edward Gill will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. wake service, Thursday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Evangeline Ericksen
HAMPTON -- Evangeline "Vannie" Josephine Ericksen, 90, of Hampton died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the United Lutheran Church in Hampton. The Rev. Shari Duminy will officiate. Burial will be in the United Lutheran Cemetery in Hampton.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mrs. Ericksen was born
on Jan. 16, 1909, in Central City to Lewis and Josephine (Benson) Jones. She grew up on a farm near Hordville. The family later moved into town. She graduated from Hordville High School.
She married John Ericksen on Sept. 2, 1930, in Nashua, Iowa. They moved to Hampton. Mr. Ericksen died on Oct. 30, 1973. Mrs. Ericksen continued to live at her home in Hampton.
She was a member of the United Lutheran Church Women and Hampton American Legion Auxiliary and a past member of the TNT Club.
Survivors include her son, Duane of Hampton; three daughters, Nell Ericksen and Marian Bedinger, both of Hampton, and Dorothy Vergas of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters.
Mable Harvey
GIBBON -- Mable Ellen Harvey, 93, of Gibbon died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services are pending with Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon.
Martha Mangers
HASTINGS -- Martha Ann Mangers, 92, of Villa Grace at the Good Samaritan Village in Hastings died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Villa Grace.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church. The Rev. Larry Gyhra will officiate. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Butler Volland Funeral Home in Hastings. A rosary service will be at 7:30 p.m. Further visitation will be one hour before services Saturday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Hastings Catholic Schools Trust.
Mrs. Mangers was born
on Jan. 3, 1907, in Juniata to J.L. and Elizabeth (Seyler) Beiriger.
She married Ervin J. Mangers on Jan. 23, 1934, in Assumption. She moved from a farm north of Roseland to Hastings in 1959. She was a homemaker. Mr. Mangers died on June 17, 1999.
Mrs. Mangers was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
Survivors include one son, Marvin Mangers of Minden; two daughters, Vonnie Lee of Grand Island and Betty Smidt of Pauline; 24 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Amelia Willmes of Kenesaw.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry and Ervin Jr.; and three brothers.
