Wayne Ramsey

KEARNEY ‹ D. Wayne Ramsey, 76, of Kearney died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church in Kearney. The Rev. David deFreese will officiate. A family committal service will be on Saturday at Arborville Cemetery in Polk. The Rev. Elwood Hipple will officiate.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Ramsey was born icon on April 6, 1923, in York County to A.H. and Mabel (Dorsey) Ramsey. He grew up on the family farm.

He married Leila "Lee" Reeb on June 10, 1945, at her parents' home in Polk. They lived on a farm southwest of Polk. They moved to Kearney in 1972. He was a real-estate broker with Lowe and Co. He was district sales manager for the Golden Harvest Seed Co. from 1975 until his retirement in 1983. He was named National District Sales Manager of the Year in 1979 at the national conference at Lake Geneva, Wis.

He was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Polk, where he served as the first Sunday school superintendent and as church council chairman. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Kearney, Kearney Elks Lodge and Kearney Country Club board of directors. He also was a charter member of the Central Nebraska Seniors Golf Association.

He was an avid golfer.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Patricia (Mrs. Michael) Stachar of Mesa, Ariz., and Shelly Ann (Mrs. Stan) Wehrli of Kearney; one son, Lyn Wayne of Elkhorn; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Mark of Macksville, Kan.; and one sister, Francis Kaeding of York.

John Farber Jr.

AINSWORTH -- John Virgil Farber Jr., 83, of Ainsworth died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.

Services were on Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Ainsworth. The Rev. Gerald Schwarz officiated. Masonic rites were conducted by members of Silver Cord Lodge 224, A.F. & A.M.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Hoch Funeral Home of Ainsworth was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Farber was born icon on April 23, 1916, at Valentine to John Virgil Sr. and Bertha Lee (Graves) Farber. He graduated from Crookston High School as valedictorian in 1935.

In 1936, he attended John Fletcher College in Oskaloosa, Iowa, where he played basketball. He went to Dunwoody Baking Institute in 1937. He returned to Crookston in 1938 and joined his parents in operating the bakery.

He married Verna M. Bratthauer on Oct. 22, 1939. They owned and operated the Ainsworth Baker for 42 years and lived in Ainsworth throughout their marriage. They lived with their daughter Marie for a while until they moved to the Ainsworth Community Care Center, where they lived until April 1999. They then moved to the Community Memorial Health Center at Burwell. Mrs. Farber died on June 30, 1999.

Mr. Farber enjoyed hunting and fishing at his Clear Lake cabin, doing farm work, playing cards and golf. He played the piano and organ and was a member of the Ainsworth Community Chorus. He was a 50-year member of the Ainsworth United Methodist Church

He served as worshipful master of Silver Cord Lodge 224, A.F. & A.M., in 1962. He was a 50-year member of the lodge. He was also a member of Ainsworth Elks Lodge 1790.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy (Mrs. Ben) Boerger of Grand Island and Marie Dodd of Ainsworth; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Merle Farber.

Marshall Hahn

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. ‹ Marshall Sterling Hahn, 67, of Rockville Centre, N.Y., formerly of Polk and Hampton, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at the Cancer Care Center of Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hampton. Burial will be in Hampton Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or Long Island Lutheran High School Women's Athletic Program.

Mr. Hahn was born icon June 11, 1932, in Polk to Leo and Meta Hahn. He attended St. Peter¹s Lutheran Elementary School and Hampton High School. He received his Bachelors and Masters degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Minnesota in 1969.

He was an educator most of his life. He taught high school in Minden. He also taught at Clemson University and New York University where he focused his skills on alternative energy resources. Dr. Hahn retired from New York University in 1990 and began an independent business as a tax grievance advisor.

He enjoyed basketball and was a strong advocate for women's athletics. He spent time coaching at the Wheatley Summer Leagues for Long Island Lutheran High School. He was interested in the environment and the conservation of natural resources.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy of Westbury, N.Y.; two daughters, Dianne Scherryl of Minneapolis, Minn. and Jennifer Lea of Whistler, British Colombia; one son, Jeffrey Marshall of Astoria, N.Y.; three brothers, Howard and Kenneth of Hampton; and one sister, Ramona Hillman of Syracuse.

Eleanor Peterson

FORT COLLINS, Colo. ‹ Eleanor M. Peterson, 83, of Fort Collins, Colo., formerly of Saronville, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, in Fort Collins.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Aurora Cemetery. The Rev. Al Duminy will officiate.

Mrs. Peterson was born icon on Aug. 3, 1916, in Saronville to Axel and Mary (Nelson) Carlson. She graduated from Sutton High School. She received a degree in library science from Bakersfield College in Bakersfield, Calif.

She married Walter F. Peterson on June 9, 1940, in Saronville. She was a librarian with the Gering City Library of Scottsbluff and the Richland school district in Shafter, Calif. Mr. Peterson died on April 22, 1992. Mrs. Peterson had lived at Shafter, Calif., before moving to Fort Collins in February 1994.

She enjoyed reading, gardening, sewing, spending time with her family and her women's church group. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter JT in Wasco, Calif., and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Fort Collins.

Survivors include one son, Norman Peterson of Monterey, Calif.; one daughter, Kathleen Robbins of Cheyenne, Wyo.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harvey and Everett Carlson; and one sister, Leola Cundall.

Faisal Marrufo-Gutierrez

Faisal Marrufo-Gutierrez, 2, of Grand Island, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, as the result of a fire at his house.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. José Chávez will officiate. Burial will be in San Antonio Cemetery at Rodeo, Durango, Mexico.

Visitation will be from 12 to 8 p.m. Thursday with a 7 p.m. parish rosary at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Faisal was born icon Feb. 6, 1997, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island to Carlos and Hermolina (Gutierrez) Marrufo. He had lived in Grand Island since birth.

Survivors include his parents, one sister, Karla and one brother, Eduardo.

Oswald Sorensen

Oswald Sorensen, 92, of 928 E. Phoenix, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at his home.

Services are pending at Apfel Funeral Home of Wood River.

Edward Brown

HASTINGS -- Edward Brown, 55, of Hastings, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Chapel in Hastings. The Rev. Tom Murray will officiate. Burial will be in Blue Valley Cemetery at Ayr.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until service time on Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Mr. Brown was born icon Oct. 15, 1944, in New Castle, Ind. to Homer Crandall and Loda Brown

He married Carolyn Douglas on Oct. 17, 1964. He served in the U.S. Air Force from May 7, 1962 until May 1966. He worked for Firestone and Big "G" Tire Sales before becoming a salesman for Garrett Tires in Hastings and Grand Island. He lived in Red Cloud and Hastings.

He attended the Juniata Community Church.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lindie Brown and Jodi Brown, both of Hastings; two granddaughters; two foster children, John Calder of Scottsbluff and Sheila Speake of Lincoln; his mother, Loda Leatherman of Illinois; three brothers, Paul Tackett of Wisconsin and Bill Reames and Ted Leatherman of Illinois; and one sister, Renee Winscom of Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Evelyn Hostick

MERNA -- Evelyn J. Hostick, 82, of Merna, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Doug Jones will officiate. Burial will be in the Merna Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in Merna or the donor's choice.

Mrs. Hostick was born icon Aug. 23, 1917, at Merna to Floyd and Opal (Small) Johnson. She attended school at Merna and graduated from Merna High School in 1935.

She married Gerald Hostick on Jan. 29, 1942. They lived and farmed at Merna. Mr. Hostick died April 6, 1986.

Mrs. Hostick was a member of the United Methodist Church in Merna. She also was a member of the Broken Bow Does and the Order of Eastern Star. She had been Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star and had received her 50-year pin.

She enjoyed bird-watching, gardening and cooking, including candy and jelly.

Survivors include two sisters, Pat Seeley of Halsey and Norma Ellingson of Hastings; two brothers, Douglas Johnson of Longview, Wash. and Robert Johnson of Mesa, Ariz.; four stepgrandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Garrel, two brothers and one sister.

Shirley Hall

LINCOLN -- Shirley J. Hall, 48, of Lincoln, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lincoln. The Rev. David Hintz will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

The rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society for kidney cancer research or Lincoln Right to Life.

Mrs. Hall was a child care provider.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, Jerald; one son, Adam; two daughters, Carrie and Courtney; host son, Tobias Klussmann of Frankfort, Germany; her parents, Clarence and Mary Schupbach of Columbus; mother-in-law Viola M. Hall of Grand Island; and one sister, Janet Stevens of Westminister, Md.

She was preceded in death by her father, Howard Ebel.
