Mary Foster

GREELEY -- Mary Foster, 99, of Greeley died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at the Greeley Care Home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley. The Rev. Gerald Carlson will officiate. Burial will be in O'Connor Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Greeley Care Home.

T.J. Finn and Sons Mortuary in Greeley is in charge of arrangements.

She was born icon on July 1, 1990, at O'Connor to James and Elizabeth (McSharry) Foster. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from St. Joseph's Academy at O'Connor in 1918. She graduated from St. Catherine's Nursing School in 1921. She lived in Omaha, working at the hospital and doing private duty nursing.

She continued her studies in Chicago and later worked in California and Wyoming. She returned to the family farm in 1946 to help with her brother Robert's ordination to the priesthood celebration. She then continued to live on the farm, caring for her mother.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish and enjoyed crocheting, needlepoint, gardening, cooking and reading.

Survivors include two brothers, the Rev. Robert and Joe Foster, both of Greeley.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, James, John, Steven, Tom and Dick; and five sisters, Rita, Anna, Betty, Rose and Fran.

Helga Kauffman

AURORA -- Helga Marie Kauffman, 87, of Aurora died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora. The Rev. Joe Scahill will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Kauffman was born icon on Sept. 11, 1912, at Aurora to Sigvard and Julia (Kaae) Andersen. Her family moved to a farm two miles east of Marquette in March 1915.

She started school at District 58 in 1917, but the family moved in March 1918. She finished the eighth grade at District 100 Hillcrest School in 1925. She worked as a domestic servant before her marriage.

She married Wesley Kauffman on March 2, 1932, in Grand Island. They lived on a farm near Phillips for three years, moved to a farm southwest of Marquette in March 1935 and moved two miles to the northeast three years later.

They endured a total drought in December 1956, so they moved to Columbus. He worked at Behlens, and she worked as an engineering lab technician at Dale Electronics. She made parts for the missions that landed on the moon. Mr. Kauffman died on Feb. 28, 1992, just two days before their 60th anniversary.

Mrs. Kauffman was interested in nature. Wood, rocks and shells became decorative items for her home and yard.

Survivors include one daughter, Barbara L. Kleve of Aurora; one son, Clayton of Grand Island; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Leona (Mrs. Guilford) Nissen of Marquette and Stella (Mrs. Bernard) Dan Hauer of Aurora.

She was preceded in death by a son, 1st Lt. Alan R. Kauffman, who died as a jet pilot in the Strategic Air Command; and two brothers, Herluff and Elwood Andersen.

Donald Lock

CENTRAL CITY -- Donald John Lock, 84, of Central City died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Dale Sallens will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Lock was born icon on Jan. 23, 1915, in Central City to Elmer F. and Minnie (Tunell) Lock. He graduated from Central City High School in 1933 and served in World War II

He married Eleanor Edith McElwain on June 2, 1946. They lived and farmed south of Central City. They retired and moved into Central City in 1983. Even after his retirement, Mr. Lock continued to help his son on the farm.

Mr. Lock was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and had served as an elder. He was a 50-year member of American Legion Post 6. He served on the Marquette school board and had been president. He enjoyed gardening and fishing.

Survivors include three sons, Steve of Sequin, Texas, Bill of Lincoln and Lloyd of Marquette; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Irene Cost of Bethesda, Md., and Lucille Rickert of Arvada, Colo.

His wife died on Dec. 12, 1994.

Mary Schroeder

GILTNER -- Mary T. Schroeder, 67, of Giltner died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Giltner. The Revs. John Keefe, Victor Derwinski, Andrew Augustyn and James Janovec will officiate. Burial will be in the Giltner Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m., Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the Giltner EMTs or the Mary Schroeder Scholarship Fund.

Mrs. Schroeder was born icon on Oct. 16, 1932, at St. Libory to Henry and Sylvia (Janovec) Cordes. She was educated at St. Libory's Catholic School and graduated in 1950 from St. Mary's Catholic High School in Grand Island. She graduated from Kearney Teachers College and taught in St. Libory rural schools before her marriage.

She married Donald F. Schroeder on June 24, 1952, at St. Libory's Catholic Church. The couple farmed near St. Libory until 1973. They moved to Giltner, where they owned and operated the Giltner Tavern. They retired in 1982. She came out of retirement and opened Mary's Place Cafe in 1989.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. She provided Meals on Wheels in Giltner. She was also a sponsor of Hooked on Fishing. She enjoyed fishing with her husband and music.

Survivors include four sons, Thomas and Ron, both of St. Paul, Dave of Alexandria, Va., and John of Grand Island; three daughters, Jane Obermeier and Janet Bish, both of Giltner, and Mary Beth Voss of Alexandria, Va.; 23 grandchildren; one brother, Donald Cordes of Falls Church, Va.; and one sister, Donna Fischer of Charlotte, N.C.

Her husband died in 1992. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene.

Anna Vavra

ORD -- Anna Vavra, 96, of Ord died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at the Hallmark Care Center in Omaha.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Rev. Bernard Berger will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday at Ord Memorial Chapel.

Sharon Vermuele

YORK -- Sharon K. Vermuele, 57, of York, formerly of Stromsburg, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at the York General Hospital.

Services are pending with Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.

Mary Luft

Mary J. Luft, 85, of Grand Island died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Ray Price

Ray L. Price, 67, of Grand Island died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Onamae Waddel will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Phyllis Buoy

BURWELL -- Phyllis Buoy, 101, of Burwell, formerly of Long Pine, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at Valley County Hospital in Ord.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Assembly of God Church in Bassett. The Rev. Gary Graesser will officiate. Burial will be in Grand View Cemetery in Long Pine.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell. Memorials are suggested to Brown County Dialysis Fund.

Mrs. Buoy was born icon Oct. 17, 1897, to Jeremiah and Emma (Whetzel) Geist at West Point.

She married John H. Buoy on March 4, 1914, in Burwell. They ranched north of Burwell in southern Rock County. They retired in 1952 and moved to Long Pine.

The couple celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1964. He died May 15, 1971. She moved to Park View Apartments in Burwell in 1984, then to Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell in 1986.

She was a member of many clubs and organizations. She was a Gold Star Mother.

Survivors include five sons, Floyd and Dewayne, both of Bassett, Harry of Burwell, Eldon of Ord and Jack of Long Pine; 22 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Roy and Mervin; one grandson, Kennith; one brother, Clifford Heist and two sisters, Alta Clark and Gladys Letcher.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. The Revs. Charles Gregory and Henry Duerksen will officiate. Burial will be in Broken Bow Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church or Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center.

Don Lock

CENTRAL CITY -- Don Lock, 84, of Central City died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.
