William F. Rose, 74

(Aug. 8) ALLIANCE - William Fran Rose, 74, died Wednesday, August 6, 2003, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. He was born Sep. 5, 1928, in Albion, to William Fran and Martha (Nave) Rose.

On April 4, 1949, he was married to Wyoma Jean Ayers at Scottsbluff. He worked in ranching 22 years at Lakeside and four years at Hyannis. He then worked for Dayco at Alliance for 14 years until his retirement. He was a lifetime member of the Eagles. He is survived by his wife, Jean of Alliance; daughters Bonnie Shoemaker of Trumbull and Jeanie Jones of Grand Junction, Colo.; son Ken Rose of Davenport; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He also is survived by brothers Harold of Washington, Dwayne of Alliance and Don of Arthur; and sisters Margie Lucksinger of Chadron, and Doris Franks Springfield, Ore. His parents, one brother and one sister preceded him in death.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at the Lakeside Cemetery, with Rev. Jerry Mercer officiating. Memorials may be given to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Curt Pritchard, 63

(Aug. 7) ALLIANCE - Curt Pritchard, 63, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born May 6, 1940 at Des Moines, Iowa, to David M. and Lowene (Hall) Pritchard.

He married Carol S. Halda Dec. 18, 1959, at West Des Moines, Iowa. He was a member of the Apostolic Church, the United Transportation Union, and the Eagles. He was the first Santa Claus on the Burlington Northern Santa Claus Train and was also the first Santa Claus at the West Way Restaurant. He is survived by his wife, Carol S. Pritchard of Alliance; his children, Evanna Mae Landgren of Alliance, David M. Pritchard II of Des Moines, Iowa, Cheryl Ortega of West St. Paul, Minn., Michael R. Pritchard of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Judy Walker and Shellie Lewis, both of Hemingford; 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his mother, Lowene Pritchard of Los Molinos, Calif.; his brother Maurice E. Pritchard of Creston, Iowa; sisters, Karen Chandler and Marlene Rice, both of Los Molinos; He was preceded in death by his father, and his grandmother, Minnie Hall.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Pastor Duane Wallace officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given in care of the family at, 717 West 14th Street, Alliance, NE 69301.

Reuben Wernke, 80

(Aug. 5) BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. - Reuben Wernke, 80, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Sunrise Hospital at Las Vegas, Nev., of respiratory distress after a lengthy illness. He was born May 26, 1923, at Bonsteel, S.D., to Henry and Agnes (Opbroek) Wernke.

He served in the U.S. navy from 1943 to 1945 (USS Pierce, APO-50) as a coxswain in the Pacific Theater. Following his discharge, he moved to Alliance and co-owned several service stations with his brother John Wernke and Gene Engelhaupt. He married Thelma Elizabeth Wilson on April 16, 1953, at St. Bridget Catholic Church at Hemingford. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They lived at Scottsdale, Ariz., from 1960-66, where he was active in the real estate market. For a short time, he owned a dry-cleaning business at Calumet City, Ill. They returned to Alliance in 1966, when he was a salesman for Bill Campbell Chevrolet and later an agent with New York Life Insurance with the late Kirt Smith, until his retirement in 1991. They later moved to Bullhead City until his death. He was a member of The American Legion Post 7, VFW No. 1517 and the Eagles Aerie No. 136. He is survived by his wife Thelma of Bullhead City; son Bill Wernke and Tara Wernke of Alliance; and grandsons Casey and Andy Wernke. He also is survived by a sister, Lucille Manzon of Lomita, Calif.; and brothers Leo Wernke of Alliance and Bernard Wernke of Fullerton, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mary Engelhaupt and Amanda Ohri; and brothers, Hildred, Gene, Leonard, Edmund, Herbert, John and Raymond.

A memorial service will be scheduled at Alliance at a later date. Cards may be sent to the family at Riverview RV Resort, 2000 E. Ramar Rd., #633, Bullhead City, AZ 76442.

John M. Woods, 93

(Aug. 5) ALLIANCE - John M. Woods, 93, died Saturday, August 2, 2003, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born Sep. 3, 1909, at Rushville, to John C. "Cal" and Grace (Brooks) Woods.

He graduated from Rushville High School in 1927 and attended Wesleyan University. On March 28, 1932, he married Elsie Burton at Rushville. He worked in the construction of the United Methodist Church in Rushville in the 1930's. After working in farming and selling dairy products he began selling and servicing sewing machines with Woods Sewing Machine Shop. They moved to Alliance in 1943 and he continued with the sewing machines sales and services in the area of the panhandle. He continued in this trade until his recent retirement. He was a member of the United Methodist Church at Rushville and Alliance where he had previously been a Sunday school teacher in both communities, and he was an over 60-year member of the Kiwanis Club where he had served as past-president. He is survived by his children and spouses, Burton M. and Gloria Woods of Las Vegas, Nev., Carmen and Lee Greenawalt of Morro Bay, Calif., and Verlene and Don Phillip of Longmont, Colo.; grandchildren, Russett and Greg Goulding, Stuart M. and Susan Craig, Robert and Anna Greenawalt, Louise and Scott Hunter, Fred Greenawalt, Walt Phillip, Scott Phillip, Terry and Chris Phillip and Keith and Colleen Foster; and 17 great-grandchildren. His sister, Thelma Potter of Albany, N.Y., also survives him as well as special friends Larry and Sherrie Curtiss, Dale Ettle and Linda Beiriger and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers James and Robert, an infant daughter Ann Mae, and his special friend Vesta Ettle.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, August 8, at the United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jerry Mercer officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church, 704 Box Butte, Alliance, NE 69301; Nebraska Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 639, Alliance, NE 69301-0639; or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Maxine Williams, 84

(Aug. 5) CHADRON - Maxine Mary Williams, 84, died Friday, Aug. 2, at her home. She was born April 7, 1919, at Monongah, W.Va., to Frank and Pearl (Saunders) Smith.

She is survived by her husband Merl Williams of Chadron; sons William (Anna) Mozes and Richard Mozes of Alliance; daughters Mary Jo (Tom) Moore of Gordon and Teri (Mark) Adamson of Wheatland, Wyo.; ten grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and four sisters.

Mrs. Williams' graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Greenwood Cemetery, with Rev. Russ Seger officiating. No memorial has been established. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

John J. Louthan, 59

(Aug. 2) THERMOPOLIS, Wyo. - John Joseph Louthan, 59, of Thermopolis, Wyo., died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at the Hot Springs County Hospital at Thermopolis. He was born Feb. 18, 1944, at Alliance, the son of Ralph D. and Wilma (Allison) Louthan.

He was raised and educated at Crawford and Lusk, Wyo. He enlisted in the U. S. Army, Oct. 7, 1963, and was honorably discharged April 27, 1976. He then worked for the Scottsbluff Public School System for 13 years, and served with the Nebraska National Guard. He moved to Thermopolis 13 years ago. He is survived by his mother, Wilma, of rural Lyman. He also is survived by his sister, Connie Vander Stoep of Denver.

Mr. Louthan's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4 at the Jones Mortuary in Mitchell, with Pastors Don Mathis and Michael Meysenburg officiating. Friends may call at the mortuary from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, south of Stegall in Banner County. Memorials may be made in care of the family.

Verna Underwood, 88

(Oct. 7) ALLIANCE - Verna Underwood, 88, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born June 5, 1915 at Glenwood, Iowa, to Fredrick and Louise (Bichel) Bebensee. She was married to Donald Underwood Dec. 3, 1936, at Bridgeport.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at St. John's United Lutheran Church, with Alice Shriver, P.M.A. officiating. Committal services will follow at 1 p.m. at the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Good Samaritan Health Care Center, Prairie Haven Hospice, or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Keith L. Bauersachs, 57

(Oct. 6) HEMINGFORD - Keith L. Bauersachs, 57, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2003 at Campbell County Memorial Hospital AT Gillette, Wyo. Keith was born July 5, 1946, at Crawford, to Warren and Dena (Dawson) Bauersachs.

Graveside services with military rites will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Hemingford Cemetery, with Rev. Jim West officiating. Memorials may be given to the Lions Eye Bank of Nebraska, 985541 Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE 68198-5541, Campbell County Memorial Hospital, 501 S. Burma, Gillette, WY 82716 or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Louise Gaghagen, 70

(Dec. 4) CENTRAL CITY - Louise I. Gaghagen, 70, died Saturday, Aug. 23, at her home. She was born April 15, 1933, at Shelton, to George W. and Myrtle N. (Brewer) Prouty. She grew up at Shelton and graduated from Shelton High School in 1950.

Memorial graveside services were Friday, Aug. 29, at the Central City Cemetery, with Fr. Tom Miles officiating. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.wagnerfuneral.com. Wagner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Iossi, 84

(Feb. 4) CRAWFORD - Elizabeth "Jane" Iossi, 84, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Chadron Community Hospital. She was born Feb. 12, 1919, at Lexington, to Roscoe C. and Mary L. Johnston. She was married to Milton Iossi at Crawford in 1939.

Mrs. Iossi's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at the United Methodist Church at Crawford, with Pastor Nancy Sisson officiating. There will be a private burial. Memorials have been established to the Crawford rescue Unit, Ponderosa Villa Nursing Home or the donor's choice. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337. Chamberlain Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Alice D. Petersen, 87

(Feb. 3) ALLIANCE - Alice D. Petersen, 87, of Alliance, passed away Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Torrington, Wyo., at the home of her daughter. Alice was born June 11, 1916 at White River, S.D., to W. Neal and Margaret (Korb) Emerick.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at St. John's United Lutheran Church, with Pastor Kent Bryant officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. The family would prefer memorials be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 70, Alliance, NE 69301-0070. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Cory Mracek, 26

(Feb. 3) HAY SPRINGS - Cory Ryan Mracek, 26, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Iskandariyah, Iraq. He was born March 16, 1977, at Chadron, to Jim and Pat (Cummings) Mracek. He attended several different schools in the panhandle before coming to Mirage Flats, Dist. 30, during the middle of sixth grade. He graduated from eighth grade at Mirage Flats, and from high school at Hay Springs in 1995, where he played football and basketball for four years, and participated in track for one year. He loved football.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Armstrong Building at Chadron, with Rev. Rod Smith and Chaplain Cpt. Matthew Madison officiating. Burial will be at the Gordon City Cemetery at Gordon.Full military services will be provided by the 3rd Battalion, 319 Airborne Field Artillery Regiment. A memorial has been established to Lister-Sage Community Center at Hay Springs. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337-0970. Chamberlain Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Christopher Girard, 27

(Feb. 3) TROY, Ohio - Christopher Andrew "Andy" Girard, 27, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004. He was born at Troy on April 14, 1976, to Jack P. and Rita (Dennison) Girard. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Mr. Girard's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Fr. John MacQuarrie officiating. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the funeral home. As a memorial, an Education Fund for his son has been established at 5/3 Bank, Troy, Ohio. Baird Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
