Ruby L. Davis

Monday, Aug. 9, 1999

Former Hastings resident Ruby L. (Van Lengen) Davis, 70, of Lincoln, died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at Tabitha Health Care in Lincoln.

Services are 1 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold D. Stromer officiating. Burial will be in Blue Valley Cemetery in Ayr. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Davis was born Jan. 17, 1929, to John and Esther (Tjarks) Van Lengen in Glenvil. She graduate from Ayr High School. On July 4, 1946, she married James Jay Davis Jr. in Smith Center, Kan. He later died Dec. 19, 1986. She worked as a cook at Sunnyside Nursing Home before moving to Lincoln in 1995.

She was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the VFW Auxiliary, both in Hastings.

Survivors are one daughter, Jeralene Burkhardt of Lincoln; one son, LaVern Davis of Hastings; her father of Hastings; two sisters, Dorothy Nash of Hastings and Donna Davis of San Jose, Calif.; one brother, Delmer of Hastings; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Vera B. Carlson

Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999

Hastings resident Vera B. Carlson, 92, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace in Hastings.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hutchins Funeral Home chapel in Franklin with the Rev. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Bloomington. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.

Miss Carlson was born Sept. 22, 1906, to Oren J. and Emma H. (Hansen) Carlson in Smith County, Kan. She attended Pleasant Valley grade school in Waverly. Her freshman year of high school was spent in Ong and three years were at Bloomington High School, where she graduated in 1925. After her mother's death, she helped her father with the rest of the family. She then moved to Hastings and worked for K&R Meat Packing Co. She returned to Bloomington to help her father on the farm during World War II. She lived in Bloomington and Franklin until 1968 when she moved to Grand Island and was employed by the Cornhusker Ordinance Plant. She later moved back to Hastings and worked seasonally for the Dekalb Seed Corn Co. In 1988 she moved to Good Samaritan Village in Hastings.

She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings and a former member of the VFW Auxiliary.

Survivors are one brother, Robert O. of Grand Island; and two sisters, Hilda J. Sager of Hastings and Ione M. Smith of Canon City, Colo.

She was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

Freda L. Hamel

Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999

Nelson resident Freda L. (Kern) Hamel, 98, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at Good Samaritan Center in Nelson.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at the Nelson Community United Church of Christ with the Rev. Dr. Ralph Sturdy officiating. Burial will be in the Nora Cemetery in Nora. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Klawitter-Price Funeral Home in Nelson.

Mrs. Hamel was born Jan. 10, 1901, to George and Hattie Mae (Hatten) Kern near Cadams. She attended Cadams and Superior elementary schools and graduated from Superior High School. She also attended Kearney State Teachers College for a year. On July 13, 1921, she married Henry M. Hamel. They then moved to Stratton, Colo., where they farmed and raised cattle for more than 13 years. They later moved back to the Nelson area to farm. She taught school for many years west of Oak, Antelope, Fairview and Red Line schools. On Feb. 1, 1955, her husband died.

She was a member of the Nelson Community United Church of Christ, the church circle, Sunshine Club, Highland Helping Club and the Senior Citizen's Group. She also served as worthy matron and was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 27. She was one of the first Gray Lady volunteers at the Good Samaritan Center.

Survivors are two sons, Keith H. of Sundance, Wyo., and Kenneth B. of Nelson; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Cora A. Adler

Friday, July 23, 1999

Former Hastings resident Cora A. (Cotton) Adler, 87, of Des Moines, Iowa, died Friday, July 23, 1999, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

Services were July 28 at Tipton First Assembly of God Church in Missouri with the Rev. Don Schutte officiating. Burial was in Greenmore Memorial Gardens in Barnett, Mo. Phillips Funeral Home of Eldon, Mo., was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Adler was born Sept. 21, 1911, to William and Anna (Schroeder) Cotton in Cambridge. She lived in Hastings from 1935-82 where she was a nurses aide at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home. On Nov. 25, 1937, she married Wilbert H. Adler in Hastings. She then moved to Eldon, Mo., until 1992 when she moved to Des Moines. On April 20, 1991, her husband died.

Survivors are two sons, Robert of Eldon, and Raymond of Hannibal, Mo.; one daughter, Phyllis Schnackel of Des Moines; three sisters, Dora Fallert of Seagerville, Texas, Wilma LaRose of Hollywood, Fla., and Esther Walker of Clinton, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Dona Henderson

Monday, July 26, 1999

Former Juniata resident Dona (Watson) Henderson, 58, of Thornton, Colo., died Monday, July 26, 1999, at her home.

Memorial services were July 30 in Denver. Olinger's Highland Mortuary of Thornton was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Henderson was born May 10, 1941, to Harold and Irene (Weseman) Watson in Juniata. In 1959 she married Ace Gish in Juniata. They lived in Nebraska, South Dakota and Colorado. They later divorced. She worked for AT&T/Lucent Technology in Denver for more than 20 years. In 1987 she married David Henderson in Las Vegas. He died in 1991.

Survivors are one son, Ron Talbert of Lincoln; two stepchildren; two brothers, Harold of Thornton, Colo., and Jerry of Hastings; and one grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Donald A. 'Don' Fitz II

Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999

Former Tribland area resident Donald A. "Don" Fitz II, 51, of Hallowell, Kan., died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, near Oswatomie, Kan.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Murdock Funeral Home in Oswego, Kan., with the Rev. Duane Cox officiating. Burial will be in the Sherman City Cemetery in Sherman City, Kan. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Fitz was born Oct. 26, 1947, to Donald A. and Winnie (Noble) Fitz in Hastings. He graduated in 1965 from Red Cloud High School and in 1967 from Southeast Community College-Milford with a degree in building construction. On June 24, 1971, he married Ann Kamin. They later divorced. He lived in West Mineral, Sherman City and Hallowell, all in Kansas. He worked as a self-employed carpenter and did construction work in Cherokee and Labette counties in Kansas.

He was a member of the Hallowell Friendship Friends Church.

Survivors are three sons, David L. and Devon F., both of Hallowell, and Donald "Joe" III of Columbus, Ga.; one daughter, Amee Fitz of Hallowell; his parents of Hastings; and two sisters, Winona Maxon of Lincoln and Millicent Fitz of Hastings.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Terisha.

Memorials may be given to the Hallowell Friendship Friends Church in care of the funeral home.

Ivan B. Stokes

Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999

Red Cloud resident Ivan B. Stokes, 79, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Congregational Church in Red Cloud with the Rev. Royce Rexilus officiating. Private family burial will take place at a later date. Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Stokes was born June 19, 1920, to George William and Cora (Hunsicker) Stokes in Webster County. He graduated in 1939 from Red Cloud High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre of Operations. On June 1, 1947, he married Marjorie Hart in Eagleville, Mo. They then returned to the family farm in Webster County. He also worked at the Red Cloud sale barn, Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service of Red Cloud, the Webster County Road Department, McDole Welding in Red Cloud and the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings.

He was a past member of the United Brethren Church in Garfield Township and a member of the Congregational Church in Red Cloud and of its choir. He also was a member of the Red Cloud Lions Club, the American Legion and VFW in Red Cloud, the National Campers and Hikers Association and the Garfield Saddle Club.

Survivors are his wife; two sons, Chuck of Red Cloud and Bill of Houston; two daughters, Nancy Muehlhausen of Davey and Jane Morris of Houston; four brothers, Vernon of Red Cloud, Leo of Friend, Gene of Sioux City, Iowa, and Everet of Omaha; two sisters, Irene Guy of Guide Rock and Deta Lindahl of Grand Island; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Regina D. Clark

Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999

Former Exeter resident Regina D. (Barkmeir) Clark, 81, of McCool Junction, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at her home.

Rosary is 7 p.m. Thursday at Metz Mortuary chapel in York and services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. today at the mortuary.

Mrs. Clark was born May 9, 1918, to Fred and Clara (Wiseman) Barkmeir in Exeter. She graduated from Exeter High School. She attended college and taught rural and public schools at McCool Junction and Friend. On July 30, 1946, she married Maurice J. Clark.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and its altar society, and of the McCool Ronald Porter American Legion Post Auxiliary. She served and was past president for the McCool Junction High School board of education, past president of the Nebraska School Improvement Association, board member of the Educational Service Unit No. 6 and president of the Lincoln Diocesan Council.

Survivors are her husband; two daughters, Sharon Cuda and Shirley Scholz, both of York; five sons, Dennis, Ron, Roger and Allen, all of McCool Junction and Mike of Lincoln; and 29 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Ramona Smith

Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999

Former Franklin resident Ramona (Hubbell) Smith, 91, of Lincoln, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, at Memorial Health Care Center in Sidney.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Congregational Church in Franklin with the Revs. Baron and Nancy Cole officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Franklin. Visitation is 9 a.m. to noon at Hutchins Funeral Home in Franklin and 1 p.m. until services Wednesday at the church.

Mrs. Smith was born Oct. 20, 1907, to Abraham Turner and Erma Gladys (Wyman) Hubbell in David City. She attended school in Wood River and graduated from high school there. She then attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Mo. On June 6, 1927, she married Donald C. Smith at First Presbyterian Church in Omaha. They moved to Shelton where they owned the S.E. Smith Lumber Co. They opened another S.E. Smith Lumber Co. in Spalding in 1941. They then moved to Franklin in 1954 to run the same lumber company. On Aug. 19, 1970, her husband died. She then moved to Lincoln. In 1999 she moved to Sidney.

She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lincoln and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star and P.E.O. Sisterhood.

Survivors are one daughter, Diane Merritt of Sidney; one son, Don of Franklin; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the Tehema Shrine for crippled children.

John J. 'Jack' Smith

Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999

Grand Island resident John Joseph "Jack" Smith, 70, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Rosary is 7 p.m. today and services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island with the Rev. Jose Chavez officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Cemetery in Grand Island. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings for several years.

Sharon K. 'Shari' Meyer

Monday, Aug. 9, 1999

Former Thayer County resident Sharon K. "Shari" (Mueller) Meyer, 52, of Chadron died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, in Chadron.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chadron. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Thursday in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery at Kiowa, northwest of Deshler. Ahrendts Funeral Home of Deshler is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Meyer was born Nov. 3, 1946, to Arnold and Elsie (Jorgensen) Mueller at Davenport. She is a former Kiowa area resident.

Survivors are her husband, Walt; two daughters, Stephanie Sayaloune and Malychanh Sayaloune, both of Alliance; her mother of Davenport; two brothers, Dale Mueller and Wayne Mueller, both of Davenport; and two sisters, Ruth Hoffman of Colleyville, Texas, and Shirley Linstroth of Columbia Heights, Minn.

Memorials may be given to Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 4-H Foundation or the American Cancer Society. Memorials to the Cancer Society may be sent in care of First National Bank of North Platte, Chadron branch.
